Kavanot: The Moses Psalms

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

Before we finish the ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื of David, I want to look at some of the ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื that are explicitly attributed to others.

Eleven perakim are attributed to Moshe:

Rashi gets this from the midrash:

(I think that ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื ื‘ื•ืื” shouldnโ€™t be taken literally; ืกืคืจ ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื is in ื›ืชื•ื‘ื™ื. Moshe sometimes writes ื‘ืจื•ื— ื”ืงืจืฉ, not at the level ื‘ืืกืคืงืœืจื™ื ื”ืžืื™ืจื”.)

These are the eleven:

  11. ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืœืชื•ื“ื”

We spoke about these a little in AltNeuLeid, when we looked at David bringing the ืืจื•ืŸ to ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื. He initially brought it on an ox-drawn wagon, to complete the journey it had started when it was returned from the Philistine captivity:

The gemara is struck by the verb ื•ึทื™ึผึดืฉึผืึทืจึฐื ึธื”; it seems to be a verbing of ื™ืฉืจ, โ€they went straightโ€œ; but then it should be ื•ึทื™ึผึตืฉืึทืจึฐื ึธื”, with a long vowel under the ื™ to indicate that it is part of the ืฉื•ืจืฉ. So the gemara aggadically interprets it as โ€œthey sangโ€.

ื‘ืจืืฉื™ืช ืจื‘ื” ื ื“:ื“ offers other options, ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื• or ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื–. Taking this aggadah seriously but not literally, the gemara is telling us that these were the songs of the restoration of the ืืจื•ืŸ to its rightful place, and I hypothesized that they were in fact the original ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื that were sung in the ืžืฉื›ืŸ that Moshe built. ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืง is similar, explicitly written for the ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื”.

We looked at ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื• in AltNeuLeid, ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื” and ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื— in Variations on a Theme, and ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืง in Gratitude in that light, as ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื of the ืžืฉื›ืŸ. We will look at ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืฆื’,โ€Ž ืฆื– and ืฆื˜, the โ€œืžืœืšโ€ psalms, in the same way. The other four are different, and we will look at them now.
