Kavanot: One Day at a Time

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

The other two ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื attributed to Moshe that do not fit into the model of ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื of the ืžืฉื›ืŸ are ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืคืจืง ืฆื‘ and ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืคืจืง ืฆื“. To understand those, I would use an interesting hypothesis of Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky. He is trying to understand what ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืคืจืง ืฆื‘,โ€Ž ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืฉื™ืจ ืœื™ื•ื ื”ืฉื‘ืช has to do with ืฉื‘ืช. There is no mention of ืฉื‘ืช in the whole perek.

He goes back to the time when Moshe initially tells Pharaoh to โ€œlet my people goโ€. Pharaoh refuses and makes things worse:

The Jews needed that in the depths of their slavery. โ€œTo tell of your mercy in the morningโ€, in bright sunny times, but also โ€œof your faithfulness at nightโ€; even when things are dark and ื—ืกื“ is not visible, ื”ืณ keeps the faith and will save them.

This isnโ€™t really an answer to the question of why bad things happen to good people, but it is an approach, a way to deal with the reality of suffering and of continuing to live with not knowing why.

There is one other โ€œMoshe Psalmโ€ that deals with ืฆื“ื™ืง ื•ืจืข ืœื•, but it is a much more brutal perek. It looks at ื”ืณ wreaking vengeance on evildoers:

This is a call for vengeance against ื’ืื™ื and ืจืฉืขื™ื. Later, their sins will be described as ืขืžืš ื”ืณ ื™ื“ื›ืื•; ื•ื ื—ืœืชืš ื™ืขื ื•, implying that these ืจืฉืขื™ื are not ืขืžืš, they are non-Jews. This certainly goes with the model that this perek was one of those that gave hope to ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ during the Egyptian slavery. Only ื”ืณ can legitimately have ื’ืื•ื•ื”; those who pretend to it, the ื’ืื™ื, will be destroyed:

These ื’ืื™ื talk a good game:

After describing the ื’ืื™ื, Moshe changes his subject:

Even though the ืจืฉืขื™ื are not Jews, he addresses ื‘ืขืจื™ื ื‘ืขื, you brutes among the people. You are the ones who are calling on the G-d of Vengeance to manifest, ืึพืœ ื ืงืžื•ืช ื”ื•ืคื™ืข, but thatโ€™s not how things work. The words are very similar to the previous perek we looked at:

And in fact this perek and ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืฉื™ืจ ืœื™ื•ื ื”ืฉื‘ืช share many expressions. They clearly are meant to be a pair.

There is a subtle shift from the rhetorical questions (the ones the fool does not understand) to a simple statement. Koren translates:

9 He That planted the ear, shall He not hear? He That formed the eye, shall He not see? 10 He That chastises nations, shall he not correct? He That teaches man knowledge?

Psalms 94, Koren translation

That last phrase, ื”ืžืœืžื“ ืื“ื ื“ืขืช, is translated as another rhetorical question with the end of the question elided, and that is implied by the ื ื™ืงื•ื“; a ืคืชื—ึพื” before a letter with a ืฉื•ื where that letter does not have a ื“ื’ืฉ is a ื”ืดื ื”ืฉืืœื”, indicating a question: ื”ึทืžึฐืœึทืžึผึตื“. But it could be read (if there were a ื“ื’ืฉ in the ืž:โ€Ž ื”ึทืžึฐึผืœึทืžึผึตื“) as a ื”ืดื ื”ื™ื“ื™ืขื”, a statement of identity. ื”ืณ is He Who teaches man knowledge. Itโ€™s no longer a question but a statement of fact: there is something to learn here.

The line about ืืฉืจื™ ื”ื’ื‘ืจ ืืฉืจ ืชื™ืกืจื ื• ื™ึพื” is very similar to one from ืื™ื•ื‘:

But here it makes clear why someone who experiences ื™ืกื•ืจื™ื is ืืฉืจื™, happy. It is because ืžืชื•ืจืชืš ืชืœืžื“ื ื•: happy is the one who experiences pain and learns from it, who sees in that pain an aspect of Torah.

The force of ืืฉืจื™ ื”ื’ื‘ืจ ืืฉืจ ืชื™ืกืจื ื• ื™ึพื”; ื•ืžืชื•ืจืชืš ืชืœืžื“ื ื• is that ื™ืกื•ืจื™ื come to teach a lesson, and happy is the one who can see that: โ€œHappy is the one whom ื”ืณ chastises and learns from Your Torahโ€. Itโ€™s a slightly different approach from the ื’ื ื–ื• ืœื˜ื•ื‘ื” above. The lesson of ื™ืกื•ืจื™ืŸ ืฉืœ ืื”ื‘ื” is not that it will be OK in the end, but that these difficult times are actually inherently good. It is the suffering that is beneficial (a trivial example is getting enough exercise).

Moshe is also making another point. The perek starts with a call for vengeance, but that shouldnโ€™t be the goal. We should call on ื”ืณ to bring ืžืฉืคื˜ that leads to ืฆื“ืง , not ื ืงืžื”.

Moshe then calls on the people to join him as he faces these

So this perek is one of the ืžื’ื™ืœื•ืช that Pharaoh said, ืืœ ื™ืฉืขื• ื‘ื“ื‘ืจื™ ืฉืงืจ. But these are not ื“ื‘ืจื™ ืฉืงืจ; in the end, ื”ืณ will not let those who pervert justice prevail.

The perek ends with a call that ื”ืณ make the ืจืฉืขื™ื pay for their sins, and ื•ื‘ืจืขืชื ื™ืฆืžื™ืชื, โ€annihilate them through their own wickednessโ€œ. Itโ€™s a negative way to end a perek (compare the positive ืœื”ื’ื™ื“ ื›ื™ ื™ืฉืจ ื”ืณ above). Itโ€™s so negative, that when we use this as the psalm for Wednesday:

We add the first psukim of the next perek:

Why say this perek on Wednesday?

But I think there is another reason. If ืฉื‘ืช is ืžืขื™ืŸ ืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ื, then Wednesday is as far from that, and as stuck in ืขื•ืœื ื”ื–ื”, as it is possible to get. Just like ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ needed a reminder of ื”ืณ's ultimate justice on ืฉื‘ืช, they needed some hope and redirection in the middle of the week, when things were at their worst. They were thinking of revenge: Moshe taught them to look instead for justice:
