Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

Weโ€™ve spent a lot of time looking at Hallel, as part of the concept of ื”ืœืœ ื•ื”ื•ื“ืื”. I want to look at two perakim of ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื that are specifically about the physical expression of ื”ื•ื“ืื”, the ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื”. The first is ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืง, which is titled ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืœืชื•ื“ื”, and was the ืฉื™ืจ sung when a ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื” was brought:

The second is ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืงื–, which starts like a โ€œHallelโ€: ื”ื“ื• ืœื”ืณ ื›ื™ ื˜ื•ื‘; ื›ื™ ืœืขื•ืœื ื—ืกื“ื•ืƒ but is actually a long list of situations when a ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื” is brought. The refrain is ื•ื™ื–ืขืงื• ืืœ ื”ืณ ื‘ืฆืจ ืœื”ื; ืžืžืฆืงื•ืชื™ื”ื ื™ื•ืฉื™ืขืืƒ and then ื™ื•ื“ื• ืœื”ืณ ื—ืกื“ื•; ื•ื ืคืœืื•ืชื™ื• ืœื‘ื ื™ ืื“ืืƒ ื•ื™ื–ื‘ื—ื• ื–ื‘ื—ื™ ืชื•ื“ื”; ื•ื™ืกืคืจื• ืžืขืฉื™ื• ื‘ืจื ื”ืƒ. Itโ€™s where we get the laws of ื‘ืจื›ืช ื’ื•ืžืœ today.

So what is a ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื”? It is a kind of ืฉืœืžื™ื, brought to the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ but eaten by the owners:

Weโ€™ve talked many times about the ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืฉืœืžื™ื: it is not a sacrifice but a barbecue. Only the inedible ื—ืœื‘ is offered on the ืžื–ื‘ื—; the meat is eaten by the ื‘ืขืœ, the ื›ื”ืŸ, and by the entire community. It is a ื—ื™ืœื•ืœ ื”ืณ to save the meat and not offer it to others (thereโ€™s no way one person, or even one family, can eat an entire cow in a single day). That is why ื–ื‘ื—ื™ ืชื•ื“ื” are connected to ื•ื™ืกืคืจื• ืžืขืฉื™ื• ื‘ืจื ื”. I need to tell the story, over and over again, of how ื”ืณ saved me, what I am bringing this ื–ื‘ื— for.

And that leads to a fascinating midrash:

So our goal for the world is to be left with only one form of prayer and one form of ืงืจื‘ืŸ, the ืชื•ื“ื”. And that is why we stand for ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืœืชื•ื“ื” in ืคืกื•ืงื™ ื“ื–ื™ืžืจื:

The good news is that it is short, so it should be easy to analyze. The bad news is that it is short, so despite its importance (we stand when we say it), we mumble it quickly and never pay attention to the words. The other bad news is that it isnโ€™t actually easy to analyze; being short just means it is being poetic and ambiguous. Rav Elchanan Samet has a 15 page essay on these 5 psukim.

We wonโ€™t spend that much time on it. But itโ€™s importance is highlighted by its authorship: it dates back to Moshe himself:

(I think that ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื ื‘ื•ืื” shouldnโ€™t be taken literally; ืกืคืจ ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื is in ื›ืชื•ื‘ื™ื. Moshe sometimes writes ื‘ืจื•ื— ื”ืงืจืฉ, not at the level ื‘ืืกืคืงืœืจื™ื ื”ืžืื™ืจื”.)

These are the eleven:

  11. ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืœืชื•ื“ื”

So our ืžื–ืžื•ืจ ืœืชื•ื“ื” (at least in some prototypical form) goes back to the time of the ืžืฉื›ืŸ.

The perek itself is a chiasm: it starts with a call to all people, ื”ืจื™ืขื• ืœื”ืณ ื›ืœ ื”ืืจืฅ and ends with the common refrain, ื›ื™ ื˜ื•ื‘ ื”ืณ ืœืขื•ืœื ื—ืกื“ื•; ื•ืขื“ ื“ืจ ื•ื“ืจ ืืžื•ื ืชื•. Thatโ€™s not the ืงืจื‘ืŸ; thatโ€™s the verbal praise. The next line is ืขื‘ื“ื• ืืช ื”ืณ ื‘ืฉืžื—ื”; ื‘ืื• ืœืคื ื™ื• ื‘ืจื ื ื” which again, is non-specific. The corresponding second-to-last line is specific: Here we have the ืงืจื‘ืŸ along with the verbal praise.

The reason for the change is in the middle section. We go from ื“ืขื• ื›ื™ ื”ืณ ื”ื•ื ืืœืงื™ื, a universal, intellectual relationship with ื”ืงื‘ืดื”, to ืขืžื• ื•ืฆืืŸ ืžืจืขื™ืชื•: we, the Jewish people, are G-dโ€™s people.

The volta is the ambiguous center line: ื”ื•ื ืขืฉื ื• ื•ืœื ืื ื—ื ื•, the ื›ืชื™ื‘, is a statement about creation. ื”ืณ created the world and therefore we need to serve Him. ื”ื•ื ืขืฉื ื• ื•ืœื• ืื ื—ื ื•, the ืงืจื™ื, is about relationship. ื”ืณ not only created us but made us His people. That is why the ืฉืœืžื™ื is a form of ืขื‘ื•ื“ื”. Itโ€™s not about the sacrifice; itโ€™s about sharing a meal, as it were, with ื”ืงื‘ืดื”. The idea of ืฉืœืžื™ื was an innovation:

Maybe I should say ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืง with more ื›ื•ื•ื ื”.

The other psalm of the ืงืจื‘ืŸ ืชื•ื“ื” is ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืงื–. That perek is the beginning of book five of ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื; the previous perek ends with a coda:

ื•ืืžืจ ื›ืœ ื”ืขื ืืžืŸ;
ื”ืœืœื•ื™ื”ืƒ

ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ืงื•:ืžื—

And book five is the real โ€œsiddurโ€ of the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ; it includes all three of the โ€œHallelโ€s along with all the ืฉื™ืจ ื”ืžืขืœื•ืชโ€˜s. Our perek is the introduction to that siddur; it describes those who have to offer thanks and praise to ื”ืงื‘ืดื”. Itโ€™s a long perek, that has four parts: a short introduction; the bulk of the perek that describes four individuals who are saved and have to offer ื”ื•ื“ืื”; a description ื”ืณโ€™s power over entire nations, when the community has to offer ื”ื•ื“ืื”; then a short conclusion.

The introduction is about praising ื”ืณ for redeeming Israel and gathering them from exile:

It looks like the pasuk is trying to say that ื”ืณ gathers them from all four corners of the earth: east, west, north and west. What does that mean? The Koren translation cheats:

and gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.

Psalms 107:3, Koren translation

But ื™ึธื doesnโ€™t mean south; it means west. The Targum takes a similar tack:

But the major sea, from the point of view of ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, is in the west. Why mention the Red Sea? Most ืžืคืจืฉื™ื argue that ืžืžื–ืจื— ื•ืžืžืขืจื‘ ืžืฆืคื•ืŸ are directions; ืžืžื–ืจื— ื•ืžืžืขืจื‘ is a merism for the entire world:

We see this often in

And according to Ibn Ezra, north is another populated area, but the land south of Israel is not. ื™ื means literally โ€œthe seaโ€, referring to those lost at sea (which is one of the groups that have to offer a ืชื•ื“ื”:

I donโ€™t like that. There are plenty of people living south of Israel, and why single out those lost at sea? There are three other groups that are mentioned in this perek.

So I will propose my own explanation. ืžืžื–ืจื— ื•ืžืžืขืจื‘ means โ€œfrom one end of the earth to the otherโ€, as weโ€™ve said. The expression ืžืฆืคื•ืŸ ื•ืžื™ื is its own phrase, an idiom that occurs elsewhere in ืชื ืดืš:

And I remembered my Asimov, that โ€œthe ends of the earthโ€ can mean different things:

For four hundred years, so many men have been blinded by Seldonโ€™s words, โ€œthe other end of the Galaxy.โ€ They brought their own peculiar physical-science thought to the problem, measuring off the other end with protractorsโ€ฆ

The solution could have been reached immediately, if the questioners had but remembered that Hari Seldon was a social scientistโ€ฆWhat could โ€opposite endsโ€œ mean to a social scientist? Opposite ends on the map? Of course notโ€ฆ

The First Foundation was at the periphery, where the original Empire was weakestโ€ฆwhere its wealth and culture were most nearly absent. And where is the social opposite end of the Galaxy? Why, at the place where the original Empire was strongest, where its civilizing influence was mostโ€ฆstrongly present.

In Brit Bein HaBโ€™tarim, โ€haโ€™Aretzโ€œ is defined as the land between the Nile and Euphrates. These rivers are not borders; never in the history of mankind have these rivers marked the borders of a single country. Rather, these rivers mark the two centers of ancient civilization โ€”Mesopotamia (โ€œNโ€™har Pratโ€) and Egypt (โ€œNโ€™har Mitzrayimโ€).

We are to become a nation โ€œdeclaring G-dโ€™s Nameโ€ at the crossroads of the two great centers of civilization.

Rabbi Menachem Leibtag, The Biblical Borders of the Land of Israel

So ื•ืžืืจืฆื•ืช ืงื‘ืฆืโ€ฆืžืฆืคื•ืŸ ื•ืžื™ื also means "gathered from one [cultural] end of the earth to the other.

And that vision, of ืงื™ื‘ื•ืฅ ื’ืœื•ื™ื•ืช, is why this perek has been adopted as the โ€œืฉื™ืจ ืฉืœ ื™ื•ืโ€ for ื™ื•ื ื”ืขืฆืžืื•ืช:

The perek then switches from the salvation of the people as a whole, to individuals. The gemara learns many details of the halachot of ื”ื•ื“ืื” from this perek:

When we look at the four cases, they all have a similar structure: 2 to 4 psukim describing their plight, one pasuk describing their prayer, 1 to 2 psukim describing how they were saved, and 2 psukim describing their ืชื•ื“ื”. But each has different details; for instance, one case has ื‘ืงื”ืœ ืขื ื•ื‘ืžื•ืฉื‘ ื–ืงื ื™ื, another has another has ื•ื™ื–ื‘ื—ื• ื–ื‘ื—ื™ ืชื•ื“ื”.

The halachic assumption here is not that the cases are distinct, with different halachot for different kinds of salvation, but that they are all the same. The poetic variation emphasizes that ื”ืณ can save in many different ways. Sometimes His hand is obvious; sometimes it is hidden. And our inclination to respond to that salvation manifests in different ways. It is the role of the halacha to give a consistent structure to that feeling.

[T]he Torahโ€™s main objective is the translation of the numinous into the kerygmaticโ€ฆ

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Worship of the Heart, p. 85

So letโ€™s look at the four cases. The first is ื”ื•ืœื›ื™ ืžื“ื‘ืจื•ืช:

The perek starts with those lost in the wilderness, then those imprisioned, then the ill and those lost at sea. The gemara has a different order: Some are bothered by that. The ื‘ืŸ ืื™ืฉ ื—ื™ says that the gemara is emphasizing the transition from large groups to the individual:

The new twist is that now there is a reason for their trouble: they were punished Even so, they need to express gratitude for being saved,

The next case, ืžื™ ืฉื”ื™ื” ื—ื•ืœื” ื•ื ืชืจืคื, also says that they deserved their fate:

The next case, ื™ื•ืจื“ื™ ื”ื™ื, is unique. Itโ€™s longer, as the description of their plight starts with the backstory (they are ืขืฉื™ ืžืœืื›ื” ื‘ืžื™ื ืจื‘ื™ื) and they start admiring ื”ืณ's handiwork, ืจืื• ืžืขืฉื™ ื”ืณ; ื•ื ืคืœืื•ืชื™ื• ื‘ืžืฆื•ืœื”. But despite this positive description, ื”ืณ still brings the storm that threatens them: ื•ื™ืืžืจ ื•ื™ืขืžื“ ืจื•ื— ืกืขืจื”. Life is like that sometimes; we think weโ€™re doing everything right but everything goes wrong. And we still need to express our gratitude.

Weโ€™ve discussed why this section of ืกืคืจ ื‘ืžื“ื‘ืจ is out of place, ืื™ืŸ ื–ื” ืžืงื•ืžื”. But how do we explain this section? Why is it โ€œout of placeโ€?

No one, in my opinion, has a good answer. However, Sforno has an interesting suggestion. He points out that the โ€œwandering in the wildernessโ€ sounds familiar:

And the next two can also be connected to

But ื™ื•ืจื“ื™ ื”ื™ื ื‘ืื ื™ื•ืช doesnโ€™t fit. So Sforno says it is a reference to the future, to the ื’ืœื•ืช promised in the ืชื•ื›ื—ื”:

And it is โ€œout of placeโ€ because it hints at a ื’ืื•ืœื” that hasnโ€™t happened yet: ื•ื™ื ื—ื ืืœ ืžื—ื•ื– ื—ืคืฆื. And when that happens, we will be able to say,

That serves as a segue to the next section, which talks about ื”ืณ's providence over countries, causing drought or bringing rain and prosperity:
