We are continuing to learn משלי, Book Two, the anthology of proverbs. This section is a series of independent verses that, on the surface level, are about practical advice, but should be taken as metaphors (it's in the title!) for ethical issues. {:he} >באין תחבלות יפל עם; ותשועה ברב יועץ׃ --משלי יא:יד This is good advice for running a country: {:he} >כאשר לא יחשבו תחבולות בדבר המלחמה אז יפול העם ביד שונאיו אולם ברוב יועץ קרובה התשועה. --מצודת דוד, משלי יא:יד {:he} ><em>באין תחבולות יפל עם</em>: שמדבר ג"כ על עת מלחמה, ולפ"ז למלחמה צריך יועצים רבים, שכ"א ימציא עצה אחרת, כי כל עצה ועצה יש לה מקום במלחמה, שלפעמים אם עצה זו לא תצליח נגד האויב יפנה אל העצה השניה, וזה שכתוב ותשועה ברוב יועץ. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:יד But משלי is not about national politics, its about personal ethics. So we take this as a metaphor: {:he} >ודבר זה משל על מלחמה אחרת פנימית נגד האויב הפנימי. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:יד In fighting this מלחמה נגד האויב הפנימי, we need תחבלות. We talked about this before; in the introduction to the sefer, Shlomo said part of his goal was to teach תחבלות to the נבון. {:he} > ישמע חכם ויוסף לקח; ונבון תחבלות יקנה׃ --משלי א:ה To quote <//Know-It-All>, the נבון doesn’t just know; they understand, deriving new truths from first principles. But such a person needs humility as well, because no human being can understand everything. Even the נבון requires heuristics. >Where finding an optimal solution is impossible or impractical, heuristic methods can be used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution. --Wikipedia, [_Heuristic_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristic) {:he} ><em>תחבלות</em>: שרשו מענין חבל, שקושר כמה חוטין זה בזה לעשות ממנו חבלים, וכן יקשור כמה היקשים או עצות וירכיבם זה על זה...וכן בא על מי שמזמין בלבו עצות שונות על ענין אחד, שבעת שלא תעלה בידו עצה אחת ישתמש באחרת. --מלבי"ם, באור המילות, משלי א:ה In battle, detailed, well-thought out plans aren't as useful as heuristics about how to react in the moment. >Everybody has plans until they get hit for the first time. --[Mike Tyson](https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Mike_Tyson#On_boxing) Acting morally is a battle because חכמה means more than knowing the right way to act. We are built to serve our own interests; we call that the יצר הרע. It isn't evil; we need that urge. As Hillel says (משנה אבות א:יד)‎ אם אין אני לי מי לי? But it can't be the *purpose* of our lives; Hillel continues, וכשאני לעצמי, מה אני. So there is a constant battle between the יצר הרע and the יצר הטוב. This metaphor of a מלחמה פנימית can be seen in the Torah as well. {:he} >(דברים כא:י) <em>כי תצא למלחמה [על איביך ונתנו ה׳ אלקיך בידך ושבית שביו]</em>: מלחמת היצר. זאת ועוד, גם בענין מלחמת היצר, אל תמתין עד שהוא יבוא ויתלבש עליך, אלא צא והלחם בו. והמלחמה בו היא על ידי לימוד תורה... > מלחמת היצר היא מלחמה קשה, כי היא מלחמה תמידית מיום ליום. אבל הקב"ה מבטיחך שאם תרצה תמשול בו--כִּי תֵצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה על האויב הפנימי שלך, אז תצליח וְשָׁבִיתָ שִׁבְיוֹ. --הרב מרדכי אליהו, [_כי תצא למלחמה _](https://www.yeshiva.org.il/midrash/6226) באין תחבלות יפל עם. You need to be aware of what you are doing and actively plan how to respond. It's too easy to just react with your natural instincts. If you don't fight the מלחמה פנימית you will lose. Ramchal calls that mindfulness, זהירות. {:he} >הנה ענין הזהירות הוא שיהיה האדם נזהר במעשיו ובעניניו, כלומר, מתבונן ומפקח על מעשיו ודרכיו, הטובים הם אם לא, לבלתי עזב נפשו לסכנת האבדון חס ושלום ולא ילך במהלך הרגלו כעור באפלה. > והנה זה דבר שהשכל יחיבהו ודאי. כי אחרי שיש לאדם דעה והשכל להציל את עצמו ולברח מאבדון נשמתו, איך יתכן שירצה להעלים עיניו מהצלתו, אין לך פחיתות והוללות רע מזה ודאי. והעושה כן הנה הוא פחות מהבהמות ומהחיות אשר בטבעם לשמר את עצמם ועל כן יברחו וינוסו מכל מה שיראה להם היותו מזיק להם. --מסילת ישרים ב׳ Living needs planning. ---- And then Shlomo turns from military strategy to financial advice. {:he} >רע ירוע כי ערב זר; ושנא תקעים בוטח׃ --משלי יא:טו He is talking about two different kinds of guarantors. {:he} > שיש שני מיני ערבות: א׳ ערב סתם שאם לא ישלם הלוה ישלם הוא, והב׳ הוא הנקרא...ערב קבלן; וזהו ”אם ערבת לרעיך“ הוא ערב סתם; אם ”תקעת לזר כפיך“ הוא ערב קבלן, שנכנס בכף ממש. --ביאור הגר״א לספר משלי ו:א And, literally, this is good advice (which I have been burned on too many times): {:he} ><em>רע ירוע כי ערב זר</em>: הוא על פי מה שיתבאר לקמן (משלי יז:יז) [בְּכׇל עֵת אֹהֵב הָרֵעַ וְאָח לְצָרָה יִוָּלֵד], שהגם שהאוהב צריך לעזור לאוהבו בכל אשר לאל ידו, ובכללו הוא לכנוס בערבות בעדו; בכל זאת אין לו לכנוס בתקיעת כף שהוא ערבות קבלנות, שבזה יגבה תיכף מן הערב. > ועל זה אמר, שמי שערב בעד זר, אף ערבות פשוט, רע ירוע. וגם להרֵע, שמוכרח לערב בעדו, בכל זה, מי שהוא שונא תוקעים בוטח, לא יכנס בערבות של תקיעת כף, שאז אינו בוטח גם ברֵע, כי יקדמו לפרוע ממנו. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:טו It sounds similar to Polonius's advice to his son (which is a great speech, worth reading in its entirety): {: .lines} >Polonius: And these few precepts in thy memory Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act... Neither a borrower nor a lender be, **For loan oft loses both itself and friend**, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. --_Hamlet_, Act 1, scene 3 But here Shlomo is talking, not about being a lender, but about being a guarantor. We are supposed to lend freely; it is a form of צדקה. {:he} ><b>ז</b> כי יהיה בך אביון מאחד אחיך באחד שעריך בארצך אשר ה׳ אלקיך נתן לך לא תאמץ את לבבך ולא תקפץ את ידך מאחיך האביון׃ <b>ח</b> כי פתח תפתח את ידך לו; והעבט תעביטנו די מחסרו אשר יחסר לו׃...<b>יא</b> כי לא יחדל אביון מקרב הארץ; על כן אנכי מצוך לאמר פתח תפתח את ידך לאחיך לעניך ולאבינך בארצך׃ --דברים פרק טו But again, משלי isn't about financial advice; its about ethics. So the Gra takes this "guarantor" as a metaphor. {:he} > ואותן הלומדין תורה הן ערב סתם שהוא מחוייב לראות שלא יבא מכשול מידו היינו שילמוד אותם הטיב ויסביר אותם בכדי שלא יטעו. ואם ”תקעת לזר כפיך“ הוא כגד הדיינים שזה תלוי כמו ערב קבלן, שמכניס עצמו במקומו ממש כן הדיינים הכניסו את עצמם כי נוטל ממון מזה ונותן לזה בלא רצון הבעל־דין הרי מכניס עצמו כערב קבלן. --ביאור הגר״א לספר משלי ו:א The first kind of guarantor is the ערב סתם; in the metaphor a teacher who will be liable if their student goes astray. {:he} >אבטליון אומר: חכמים, הזהרו בדבריכם, שמא תחובו חובת גלות ותגלו למקום מים הרעים, וישתו התלמידים הבאים אחריכם וימותו, ונמצא שם שמים מתחלל. --משנה אבות א:יא {:he} >ואמר השמרו בדבריכם בתוך ההמון, ולא יהיה בדבריכם מקום שיסבול פירוש אחר. מפני שאם יהיו שם אנשים כופרים יפרשו אותם כפי אמונתם, והתלמידים כבר שמעו אותם מהם ויחזרו למינות ויחשבו שזאת היתה אמונתכם, ויהיה בזה חלול השם, כאשר אירע לאנטיגנוס עם צדוק וביתוס. --פירוש הרמב"ם, משנה אבות א:יא The message is: be careful. You are still obligated to teach, but look out for the זר. In terms of the metaphor of book one, don't let your students become the אשה זרה. And the second kind of guarantor is the ערב קבלן, the judge who is immediately responsible for what the litigants do, because the judge has the authority to force that action. {:he} >שמעיה אומר:...שנא את הרבנות... --משנה אבות א:י {:he} ><em>שנא את הרבנות</em>: התרחק מלנהוג שררה על צבור, שהרבנות מקברת את בעליה. --רבי עובדיה מברטנורא, משנה אבות א:י רבנות, being in a position of leadership, is bad for your health. {:he} >דאמר רבי חמא בר חנינא: מפני מה מת יוסף קודם לאחיו? מפני שהנהיג עצמו ברבנות. --ברכות נה,א But, like being a teacher, you can't hide from positions of leadership. {:he} >מֶלֶךְ בְּמִשְׁפָּט יַעֲמִיד אָרֶץ; וְאִישׁ תְּרוּמוֹת יֶהֶרְסֶנָּה׃ --משלי כט:ד {:he} ><em>ואיש תרומות יהרסנה</em>: אם משים אדם עצמו כתרומה הזו שמושלכת בזויות הבית, ואומר: מה לי בטורח הצבור; מה לי בדיניהם; מה לי לשמוע קולם? שלום עליך נפשי! הרי זה מחריב את העולם הוי ”ואיש תרומות יהרסנה“. > מעשה ברבי אסי כשהיה מסתלק מן העולם נכנס בן אחותו אצלו מצאו בוכה, א״ל רבי מפני מה אתה בוכה? יש תורה שלא למדת ולימדת?...ועל כל מדות שהיו בך, היית מתרחק מן הדינין ולא נתת רָשׂוּת על עצמך להתמנות על צרכי צבור! א״ל בני עליה אני בוכה שמא אתן דין וחשבון על שהייתי יכול לעשות דיניהם של ישראל. הוי ואיש תרומות יהרסנה. --מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת משפטים סימן ב >Terumah is holier than chullin [non-sacred produce]. It is set aside, on its own. The man of Terumos that the Medrash refers to is the person who considers himself like “Terumah.” He feels that he is above the masses that are “/chullin/”. He feels “I don’t need all this” and refuses to sully himself with the needs of the common people (/hamon am/). “Let me do my own thing. Let me be for myself. I want to be like terumah that is set aside in the corner.” > This attitude, the Medrash states, is destructive. The lesson we must take from this Medrash is that not only those who are worthy to be judges must occupy themselves with congregational needs. We are all called upon, on many occasions and under many circumstances to get involved—to become the chairman, to sit on the committee. Everyone who has sat on a committee or been involved in communal needs knows that it is full of aggravation. It is so easy to take the attitude “I don’t need this.” --Rabbi Yissocher Frand, [_Those in a Thankless Role Deserve A Thank-You_](https://torah.org/torah-portion/ravfrand-5766-mishpatim/) So in the words of משלי, you should שנא תקעים, and in the words of the Mishna, שנא את הרבנות. Don't do it for the sake of the power and glory. But do it anyway. ---- The next metaphor describes the אשה. {:he} >אשת חן תתמך כבוד; ועריצים יתמכו עשר׃ --משלי יא:טז In modern Hebrew, an עריץ is a tyrant. It comes from the root for "fear". {:he} > ואמר אלכם; לא תערצון ולא תיראון מהם׃ --דברים א:כט It's not inherently a bad thing: {:he} >נעריצך ונקדישך כסוד שיח שרפי קדש... --קדושה, מוסף, נוסח אשכנז This is a different אשה from Book One. There, it was a metaphor for wisdom. This is a metaphor for the soul, for the sense of self. {:he} >אשה טובה שמשגת חן ע"י מעשיה הטובים, או לפי המליצה נפש יקרה טובה וחכמה שהיא האשה המליציית בספר הזה. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:טז So the parallelism of this pasuk contrasts the נפש חן and the נפש עריץ. Shlomo is telling us that, even though intimidating others can lead to obedience and thus wealth, >Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved. --Machiavelli, _The Prince_, Chapter 17 treating others with חן, grace, will lead to כבוד, status in the eyes of others. >You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. --[Old proverb](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/you_can_catch_more_flies_with_honey_than_with_vinegar) ---- The next pasuk is about asceticism. {:he} >גמל נפשו איש חסד; ועכר שארו אכזרי׃ --משלי יא:יז Making yourself suffer means you will end up being cruel to others: {:he} ><em>גומל נפשו</em>: מי שגומל טוב לנפשו המתאווה לתת לה די מחסורה ההכרחי להחיותה ולהעמידה במצב הבריאות הוא בודאי איש חסיד כי כאשר יחמול על נפשו כן יחמול על נפש הזולת אבל העוכר בשר עצמו ומרעיב עצמו כי יחוש על הממון כ״ש שהוא אכזרי על הזולת. --מצודת דוד, משלי יא:יז And so asceticism is forbidden: {:he} ><em>גמל נפשו איש חסד</em>: זה הלל הזקן, שבשעה שהיה נפטר מתלמידיו היה מהלך והולך עמם, אמרו לו תלמידיו רבנו להיכן אתה הולך אמר להם לעשות מצוה, אמרו לו וכי מה מצוה זו, אמר להן לרחץ בבית המרחץ, אמרו לו וכי זו מצוה היא, אמר להם, הן. מה אם איקונין של מלכים שמעמידים אותן בבתי טרטיאות ובבתי קרקסיאות, מי שנתמנה עליהם הוא מורקן ושוטפן והן מעלין לו מזונות, ולא עוד אלא שהוא מתגדל עם גדולי מלכות, אני שנבראתי בצלם ובדמות, דכתיב (בראשית ט:ו): כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹקִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם, על אחת כמה וכמה. --ויקרא רבה לד:ג {:he} >אמר שמואל: כל היושב בתענית נקרא חוטא. סבר כי האי תנא, דתניא ר׳ אלעזר הקפר ברבי אומר: מה תלמוד לומר (במדבר ו:יא) וְכִפֶּר עָלָיו מֵאֲשֶׁר חָטָא עַל הַנָּפֶשׁ. וכי באיזה נפש חטא זה? אלא שציער עצמו מן היין. והלא דברים קל וחומר: ומה זה, שלא ציער עצמו אלא מן היין, נקרא חוטא; המצער עצמו מכל דבר ודבר, על אחת כמה וכמה! --תענית יא,א {:he} >רבי חזקיה ר' כהן בשם רב: עתיד אדם ליתן דין וחשבון על כל שראת עינו ולא אכל. --ירושלמי קידושין ד:יב Rashi, however, has a different approach. The שאר, flesh, here is talking about family: {:he} ><em>גומל נפשו</em>: גומל טובה לקרוביו איש חסד איש שהוא חסיד. > <em>ועכר שארו אכזרי</em>: והאכזרי הוא עוכר את קרוביו. --רש״י, משלי יא:יז We need to care for family. >Often told is the anecdote where a wealthy lawyer, solicited for a charitable donation, replies "Do you realise my mother is dying of a long-term illness and has medical bills several times her income? Did you know that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and in a wheelchair? Do you understand my sister is widowed and penniless with three dependent children? Well, since I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?" --Wikipedia, [_Lawyer joke_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawyer_joke) {:he} >דתני רב יוסף: (שמות כב:כד) אִם כֶּסֶף  תַּלְוֶה אֶת עַמִּי אֶת הֶעָנִי עִמָּךְ. עמי וגוי --עמי קודם, עני ועשיר--עני קודם. ענייך ועניי עירך--ענייך קודמין, עניי עירך ועניי עיר אחרת--עניי עירך קודמין. --בבא מציעא עא,א {:he} >הלוא פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית; כי תראה ערם וכסיתו ומבשרך לא תתעלם׃ --ישעיהו נח:ז {:he} ><em>ומבשרך לא תתעלם</em>: להאכיל הרעב ולכסות הערום הוא חיוב לכל ישראל; אבל מי שהוא קרובו הוא חייב יותר זה, ואם יראה אותו שהוא עני לא יעלים עיניו ממנו עד שיצטרך לשאול מחיתו אלא חייב להלוות לו ולפתוח לפניו דרכים שירויח בהם. --רד״ק, ישעיהו נח:ז This is an important ethical principle in ספר משלי, because it isn't obvious. The theory behind modern "Effective Altruism" is that *all* suffering is equally morally wrong, and caring about those close to us is evil. > The fact that a person is physically near to us, so that we have personal contact with him, may make it more likely that we shall assist him, but this does not show that we ought to help him rather than another who happens to be further away... > It makes no moral difference whether the person I can help is a neighbor's child ten yards from me or a Bengali whose name I shall never know, ten thousand miles away. --Peter Singer, [_Famine, Affluence and Morality_](https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/get-involved/videos-books-and-essays/famine-affluence-and-morality-peter-singer#full-text-of-famine-affluence-and-morality) Shlomo is telling us that Peter Singer is wrong. The reason is that Peter Singer is an atheist. The good that he does is the only good that exists. If human beings don't care for humanity as a whole, no one will. And in that big picture, that Bengali *is* the same as my neighbor's child. But we have faith that in the big picture, ה׳ is running the world. My acts of חסד help *me* become a better person and achieve my purpose in existing. {:he} > תני רבי יהושע: יותר ממה שבעל הבית עושה עם העני העני עושה עם בעל הבית. שכן רות אומרת לנעמי (רות ב:יט): שֵׁם הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי עִמּוֹ הַיּוֹם בֹּעַז, ”אשר עשה עמי“ אין כתיב כאן, אלא ”אשר עשיתי עמו“. אמרה לה: הרבה פעלות וטובות עשיתי עמו היום בשביל פרוסה שנתן לי. --ויקרא רבה לד:ח And צדקה for those we see will affect us more than the abstract good we may do far away. עניי עירך ועניי עיר אחרת--עניי עירך קודמין. And so, Shlomo emphasizes that the צדיק is the one doing רצון ה׳. {:he .lines} ><b>יח</b> רשע עשה פעלת שקר; וזרע צדקה שכר אמת׃ <b>יט</b> כן צדקה לחיים; ומרדף רעה למותו׃ <b>כ</b> תועבת ה׳ עקשי לב; ורצונו תמימי דרך׃ --משלי פרק יא ---- And then two lines that I think are connected, though that is not obvious. {:he .lines} ><b>כא</b> יד ליד לא ינקה רע; וזרע צדיקים נמלט׃ <b>כב</b> נזם זהב באף חזיר אשה יפה וסרת טעם׃ --משלי פרק יא נזם זהב באף חזיר is, presumably, a common expression, like "putting lipstick on a pig". It doesn't help the pig. It's still a pig. >“A hog in armour is still but a hog” was recorded in 1732 by British physician Thomas Fuller... > >But the exact wording of “putting lipstick on a pig (or hog)” doesn’t show up until much later. In 1985, the Washington Post quoted a San Francisco radio host on plans for renovating Candlestick Park (instead of building a new downtown stadium for the Giants): “That would be like putting lipstick on a pig.” > Ann Richards did much to boost the saying’s political popularity when she used a number of variations while governor of Texas in the early ‘90s. In 1991, in her first budget-writing session, she said, “This is not another one of those deals where you put lipstick on a hog and call it a princess.” The next year, at a Democratic barbecue in South Dakota, she criticized the George H.W. Bush administration for using warships to protect oil tankers in the Middle East, which she considered a hidden subsidy for foreign oil. “You can put lipstick on a hog and call it Monique, but it is still a pig,” she said. --Ben Zimmer, [_Who First Put “Lipstick on a Pig”?_](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2008/09/where-does-the-expression-lipstick-on-a-pig-come-from.html) Shlomo tells us that אשה יפה וסרת טעם, a beautiful woman who lacks sense, is the same way. Her beauty is worthless. In terms of the metaphor, a person can't do a few showy generous acts to make up for a lifetime of cruelty. And that is what יד ליד means. {:he} ><em>יד ליד לא יינקה רע</em>: בוא וראה: שתי ידים יש לו לאדם: אם גונב באחת, ונותן צדקה באחרת, לא יינקה. כך, לעתיד לבוא הקב"ה אומר לרשעים: שני עולמות בראתי לכם, אחד לעשות בו מעשים טובים, ואחד לקבל בו שכר. עכשיו, שלא עשיתם מעשים טובים בעולם הזה שהייתם בו, אתם מבקשים שכר?! מה אדם שבראתי שתי ידיים, באחת עושה עבירה ובאחת עושה צדקה, כתיב ”יד ליד לא יינקה רע“, ואתם סבורים להינצל מדינו של גיהנם?! לא יינקה רע! > אמר רבי יוחנן: משל לאדם אחד שהלך ועבר עבירה, ונתן לזונה שכרה, ולא הספיק לצאת מפתח ביתה עד שפגע בו עני אחד, אמר לו: תן לי צדקה. נתן לו והלך לו, ואמר אותו האיש ”אילולי שרצה הקב"ה לכפר על עוונותיי, לא שלח לי אותו עני, שאתן לו צדקה ויתכפר לי על מה שעשיתי“. אומר לו הקב"ה: רשע! אל תחשוב כן, אלא לך ולמוד מחכמתו של שלמה, שפירש ואמר ”יד ליד לא יינקה רע“. --מדרש משלי יא It is the overall consistency that matters. Those good deeds are the "זרע" that will save the צדיק. {:he} ><em>אלה תולדת נח נח איש צדיק</em>:...למדך שעקר תולדותיהם של צדיקים מעשים טובים. --רש"י, בראשית ו:ט Be good always.
