Today I'm going to talk about mandrakes. Davidson (1923-1993) was a science fiction writer, frum for most of his life (attended YU for a time but did not graduate; in a <a href="http://forward.com/culture/10772/writing-in-four-dimensions/">biography</a>, the Forward said he discovered Eastern religions in the seventies and "is rumored to have relinquished his yarmulke after a stay in Japan"). He was a medic in Israel in 1948, then returned to the US in 1952. His writing was literary, full of long complicated sentences and sesquipedalian words, with a profoundly dry humor that I love. <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite> is nonfiction, a book of cryptozoology and the origin of various legends. >Although the wombat is real and the dragon is not, nobody knows what a wombat looks like and everyone knows what a dragon looks like</p> --Avram Davidson, [_Adventures in Unhistory_](https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X), p. 207 The mandrake, like many plants, contains poisonous chemicals called alkaloids (like caffeine, nicotine, atropine; all the "ine" drugs) that defend them against being eaten by animals. Human beings just aren't that smart. When a human being finds a new plant, their first question is, "will it make me high?" Scopolamine, the active ingredient in mandrake, certainly will. Before it kills you. However, at appropriate doses, it is an anti-nausea, anti-cramping medicine, and a mild sedative. It was used (and still is) in pregnancy and childbirth, and was thought to be a fertility drug as well (probably why Rachel wanted it). But more than its chemical properties, it is the shape of the mandrake that is striking. >Then there was the mandrake, and it looked like the entire human body, in that the root was often bifurcated, or forked, giving the appearance of legs; and sometimes the root divided further, and seemed to have arms *and* legs. In short, it looked like the entire human body, and so, it must be *good* for the entire human body... > So, eventually, the *shape* of the plant mandrake took possession of the minds of men...Once it became fixed that the power of the mandrake rested in its manlike shape, it medical uses began to be forgotten... > [Quoting an older book:] "...surprising results are obtained by carefully digging out the living plant and preparing the root by binding it with thread, then by cleaving, incising, scratching and bandaging, after which it is replanted so that it can continue to grow for some time...Only after the different abrasions and wounds are grown over is the root again dug out, and when it has become shrunken and quite dry, it is often difficult to distinguish the artificially modified parts. But why do I care? The answer is that Reuven's descendants cared, enough to put the דודאים on their flag: <blockquote lang=he><p>סימנים היו לכל נשיא ונשיא, מפה וצבע על כל מפה ומפה...ראובן אבנו אודם ומפה שלו אדום ומצוייר עליו דודאים.</p> <footer class=source>מדרש רבה, במדבר ב:ו</footer></blockquote>  --Wikipedia, [_שבט ראובן_](https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A9%D7%91%D7%98_%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%95%D7%91%D7%9F) But Ibn Ezra, analyzing the symbols on the flags of the four camps, says it wasn't the flower that was on the flag, but the humanoid root: {:he} >סימנים היו בכל דגל ודגל; וקדמונינו אמרו שהיה בדגל ראובן *צורת אדם* מכח דרש דודאים, ובדגל יהודה צורת אריה...ובדגל אפרים צורת שור...ובדגל דן צורת נשר; עד שידמו לכרובים שראה יחזקאל הנביא. --אבן עזרא, במדבר ב:ב And that gets back to the meaning of the flags: {:he} >ודמות פניהם פני אדם ופני אריה אל הימין לארבעתם ופני שור מהשמאול לארבעתן; ופני נשר לארבעתן׃ --יחזקאל א:י Yechezkel had a vision of the כרובים carrying the מרכבה out of Jerusalem, and he saw them as four animals in four directions. We've pointed out many times that they symbolize כנסת ישראל that carries the שכינה in the world, and how the four faces of Yechezkel's כרובים represent the four flags of the camp of בני ישראל. And the משכן and the בית המקדש were full of images of כרובים: {:he} >ואת המשכן תעשה עשר יריעת; שש משזר ותכלת וארגמן ותלעת שני כרבים מעשה חשב תעשה אתם׃ --שמות כו:א {:he} ><em>כרבים מעשה חשב</em>: כרובים היו מצירין בהם באריגתן, ולא ברקימה שהוא מעשה מחט, אלא באריגה בשני כתלים, פרצוף אחד מכאן ופרצוף אחד מכאן--*ארי מצד זה ונשר מצד זה*. --רש״י, שמות כו:א Note that a "כרוב" could be any of the four images (the שור was left out because that became inspiration for the עגל הזהב.‎ ואכמ״ל). But *the* כרובים, the ones in the קודש הקדשים, were specifically פני אדם. {:he} >אמרו קדמונינו כי צורת כרובים כשני נערים. ופירשו כרוביא בלשון ארמי. והכ״ף משרת. ונכון דברו שהיו כצורת ילדים אם היא קבלה. --אבן עזרא, שמות כה:יח So why are the "real" כרובים the symbol of ראובן? His tribe is not the leader of בני ישראל;‎ ראובן is almost an afterthought, irrelevant to the post-מצרים history of the Jewish people. ---- This is based on an insight from [Rabbi David Fohrman](https://www.alephbeta.org/playlist/power-of-rachels-tears). We all know the haftorah for Rosh Hashana (second day): {:he} ><b>טו</b> כה אמר ה׳ קול ברמה נשמע נהי בכי תמרורים רחל מבכה על בניה; מאנה להנחם על בניה כי איננו׃ > <b>טז</b> כה אמר ה׳ מנעי קולך מבכי ועיניך מדמעה; כי יש שכר לפעלתך נאם ה׳ ושבו מארץ אויב׃ <b>יז</b> ויש תקוה לאחריתך נאם ה׳; ושבו בנים לגבולם׃ --ירמיהו פרק לא יש שכר לפעלתך. What is the פעולה that ה׳ is rewarding? The פשט, reading the text very locally, would be Rachel's מבכה על בניה: {:he} ><em>יש שכר לפעולתך</em>: מה שאת מתפללת בעדם. --מלבי"ם, ירמיהו לא:טז And we all know the aggadah: {:he} >באותה שעה קפצה רחל אמנו לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא ואמרה רבונו של עולם, גלוי לפניך שיעקב עבדך אהבני אהבה יתרה ועבד בשבילי לאבא שבע שנים, וכשהשלימו אותן שבע שנים והגיע זמן נשואי לבעלי, יעץ אבי להחליפני לבעלי בשביל אחותי, והקשה עלי הדבר עד מאד כי נודעה לי העצה, והודעתי לבעלי ומסרתי לו סימן שיכיר ביני ובין אחותי כדי שלא יוכל אבי להחליפני, ולאחר כן נחמתי בעצמי וסבלתי את תאותי ורחמתי על אחותי שלא תצא לחרפה, ולערב חלפו אחותי לבעלי בשבילי, ומסרתי לאחותי כל הסימנין שמסרתי לבעלי, כדי שיהא סבור שהיא רחל...ומה אני שאני בשר ודם עפר ואפר לא קנאתי לצרה שלי ולא הוצאתיה לבושה ולחרפה, ואתה מלך חי וקים, רחמן, מפני מה קנאת לעבודת כוכבים שאין בה ממש, והגלית בני ונהרגו בחרב ועשו אויבים בם כרצונם. מיד נתגלגלו רחמיו של הקדוש ברוך הוא ואמר, בשבילך רחל אני מחזיר את ישראל למקומן, הדא הוא דכתיב...כה אמר ה' מנעי קולך מבכי ועיניך מדמעה כי יש שכר לפעלתך וגו׳. --איכה רבה, פתיחתא א:כד But that's not in the text. What פעולה do we see for Rachel that ה׳ should have pity on Israel? What is unique about Rachel? There's a hint in the midrash: {:he} ><em>ותאמר לאה נתן אלקים (את) שכרי</em>: לא רצתה לתלות הדבר בדבר קל בדודאים שנתנה לרחל, אלא ”באשר נתתי שפחתי לאישי“... > <em>ותקרא שמו יששכר</em>: כלומר יש לי שכר על מה שעשיתי, ובו בלשון הבטיח הקב"ה לבעלי תורה, שנאמר *כי יש שכר לפעולתך נאום ה'*. ולמה שי"ן השנייה נכתבת ואינה נקראת, כי היה שם שני ענייני שכר, שכר נתינת זלפה ליעקב, ושכר נתינת דודאים לרחל, והיא לא תלתה הדבר אלא בשכר הראשון, להכי אין אנו קורין רק לשי"ן הראשון, והשניה נכתבת לדרוש בה אם למסורה שכר דודאים, וכענין שדרשנו. --מדרש שכל טוב, בראשית ל:יח Note the pun: כי יששכר לפעלתך→כי יש שכר לפעלתך. So the suggestion is that both sisters gave up something; Leah gave up her דודאים, and Rachel gave up her Yaakov. She accepted Leah as Yaakov's wife, and would eventually receive the reward for that: יש שכר לפעלתך. {:he} > רבי שמואל בר נחמן אמר זו הפסידה דודאים ונשתכרה שבטים וקבורה עמו, רחל נשתכרה דודאים והפסידה שבטים וקבורה עמו. --בראשית רבה עב:ג Note what *doesn't* happen after this conflict between the sisters. No one ends up murdered. No one ends up exiled, kicked out of the house. They have a profound difference, and they work it out. The דודאים are a symbol of the unity that is possible when we are willing to be מוותר, to relinquish something for the sake of the other. It is the דודאים that allow twelve diverse tribes to become one nation, to become the מרכבה.
