David invokes an image of peace, lying on the grass by the river. More specifically, it invokes the terms used to describe Eden:

But heโ€™s not in Eden; heโ€™s in ื™ืขืจ ื—ืจืช, the โ€œcarvedโ€ rocky woods; in ืจืฉืดื™'s terms, as dry as baked clay. He is not hallucinating: he knows where he is (in the ื’ื™ื ืฆืœืžื•ืช, the shadow of death) but he is calm and at peace since he knows that ื”ืณ is guiding him.

Sticking Point

The phrase ืฉื‘ื˜ืš ื•ืžืฉืขื ืชืš is striking (pun intended). Both are rods of a sort, but with very different meanings:

David appreciates ื”ืณ's presence, whether supporting him or disciplining him. Both remind him that ื”ืณ is his shepherd and both are comforting (if sometimes painful).

Oil Change

The next pasuk is a three-fold image of excess ื‘ืจื›ื”: not only defeating his enemies but feasting while they watch impotently; not just anointed but โ€œfertilizedโ€ with oil, and his cup running over. We see this image of the overflowing ืฉืžืŸ ื”ืžืฉื›ื” as a symbol of ื‘ืจื›ื” elsewhere:

How Embarrassing

ื‘ื•ืฉื”, embarrassment, has a very specific meaning in ืชื”ื™ืœื™ืโ€Ž. It refers to the shame of praying to ื”ืณ and not being answered (realizing that sometimes, โ€œNoโ€ is an answer; the shame is in being ignored entirely). Thus (ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื ื›ื‘:ื•โ€Ž)โ€Ž ืืœื™ืš ื–ืขืงื• ื•ื ืžืœื˜ื•; ื‘ืš ื‘ื˜ื—ื• ื•ืœื ื‘ื•ืฉื•ืƒ So here David expresses his confidence in ื”ืณ, as in the perek we just analyzed, but then turns from confidence to a prayer: Please, ื”ืณ, listen to me, be my rock and strength (thatโ€™s where the ืคื™ื•ื˜ of ืžืขื•ื– ืฆื•ืจ comes from). He then jumps back to a statement of fact: ื”ืณ is my rock and my fortress (especially since he has just abandoned the ืžืฆื•ื“ื” in Moab to come to the desert of Yehudah). And then he goes back to asking ื”ืณ,โ€Ž ืชื•ืฆื™ืื ื™ ืžืจืฉืช ื–ื•. And then the confidence that we quote in ืื“ื•ืŸ ืขื•ืœื,โ€Ž ื‘ื™ื“ืš ืืคืงื™ื“ ืจื•ื—ื™.

Whatโ€™s going on here? Doesnโ€™t David trust ื”ืณ to keep him safe? Didnโ€™t ื’ื“ ื”ื ื‘ื™ื just tell him to go back? The reason is the same as ื™ืขืงื‘'s when he prayed to be saved from ืขืฉื•, even though ื”ืณ had promised to save him:

Anger Management

Heโ€™s just discovered his faith in ื”ืณ's salvation, ื•ืื ื™ ืืœ ื”ืณ ื‘ื˜ื—ืชื™, but saying about those who still look to ื”ื‘ืœื™ ืฉื•ื, itโ€™s a little harsh to say ืฉื ืืชื™. And it reflects a lack in himโ€”he may have faith in ื”ืณ but he has lost faith in people. He is happy (ืื’ื™ืœื” ื•ืืฉืžื—ื”) that ื”ืขืžื“ืช ื‘ืžืจื—ื‘ ืจื’ืœื™, โ€You have made me stand in wide-open spacesโ€œ, but still ืฆืจ ืœื™, โ€I feel constrictedโ€œ. Why? ืขืฉืฉื” ื‘ื›ืขืก ืขื™ื ื™; ื ืคืฉื™ ื•ื‘ื˜ื ื™. The anger I feel is eating away at me inside, at my very existence. This goes back to what we talked about when ืฉืื•ืœ had his ืจื•ื— ืจืขื”:โ€Ž (ืฉื‘ืช ืœ:ื‘)โ€Ž ืื™ืŸ ืฉื›ื™ื ื” ืฉื•ืจื” ืœื ืžืชื•ืš ืขืฆื‘ื•ืชโ€ฆืืœื ืžืชื•ืš ื“ื‘ืจ ืฉืžื—ื” ืฉืœ ืžืฆื•ื”. We need to take a moment and look at this phrase, ืขื™ื ื™ ื ืคืฉื™ ื•ื‘ื˜ื ื™. Itโ€™s parallel to the word ืขืฆืžื™, my bones, later; though I would translate that as โ€œmy ืขืฆื, my identityโ€. I think itโ€™s a reference to the Kabbalistic idea that the soul (for lack of a better word) has three parts:

So David is saying ื›ืฉืœ ื‘ืขื•ื ื™ ื›ื—ื™, his strength is being sapped by his sin. And what is his sin? It is that which is rotting his ืขืฆื, every part of his ื ืฉืžื”. It is his anger that is cutting him off from ื”ืณ. And what is he angry about?

Wanted and Unwanted

ืžื›ืœ ืฆืจืจื™ ื”ื™ื™ืชื™ ื—ืจืคื”; my enemies have made me a disgrace, and now my former friends and neighbors are afraid to be seen with me. Iโ€™ve gone from being the hero of the battle of Elah to an enemy of the state. I have been forgotten like a lost utensil.

How Embarrassing, Redux

What is striking is that David does not pray to have his anger cured, to be given ื ื—ืช ืจื•ื—; I donโ€™t think he is at that point yet. He just reiterates his faith in ื”ืณ and asks that ื”ืื™ืจื” ืคื ื™ืš ืขืœ ืขื‘ื“ืš, donโ€™t reject me despite my unworthiness; ื”ืณ ืืœ ืื‘ื•ืฉื” ื›ื™ ืงืจืืชื™ืšโ€”donโ€™t embarrass me (in the sense above) when I call. Give me the reward that you have hidden away for the righteous.

David asks to be protected from those conspiring against him; ืจื›ืกื™ ืื™ืฉ is from the pasuk in ืชืฆื•ื”โ€Ž (ืฉืžื•ืช ื›ื—:ื›ื—)โ€Ž ื•ื™ืจื›ืกื• ืืช ื”ื—ืฉืŸ ืžื˜ื‘ืขืชื• ืืœ ื˜ื‘ืขืช ื”ืืคื•ื“. Davidโ€™s enemies imagined as tied together.

The last 4 psukim are addressed to the audience. He starts with a ื‘ืจื›ื” that ื”ืณ has physically saved him, then says that in his panic he felt ื ื’ืจื–ืชื™ ืžื ื’ื“ ืขื™ื ื™ืš. Itโ€™s different from the pasuk in ื”ืœืœ,โ€Ž (ืงื˜ื–:ื ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื)โ€Ž ืื ื™ ืืžืจืชื™ ื‘ื—ืคื–ื™: ื›ืœ ื”ืื“ื ื›ื–ื‘โ€Ž; here he is concerned with his relationship with ื”ืงื‘ืดื”.โ€Ž ื’ืจื– is related to but stronger than ื’ื–ืจ, cut off. It is used for an axe (ื“ื‘ืจื™ื ื™ื˜:ื”)โ€Ž ื•ืืฉืจ ื™ื‘ื ืืช ืจืขื”ื• ื‘ื™ืขืจ ืœื—ื˜ื‘ ืขืฆื™ื ื•ื ื“ื—ื” ื™ื“ื• ื‘ื’ืจื–ืŸ ืœื›ืจืช ื”ืขืฅ. But David says he should have had faith in that as well; ืฉืžืขืช ืงื•ืœ ืชื—ื ื•ื ื™.
