Saul is described as ื™ื•ืฉื‘ ื‘ื’ื‘ืขื”โ€ฆื‘ืจืžื”, which may simply be a place description, but was seen by ื—ื–ืดืœ as a hint to Saulโ€™s ingratitude: he owes his position to Samuel, who dwelt in ืจืžื”:

The depths of Saulโ€™s paranoia can hardly be overstated. He is accusing all of his advisors and relatives (ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืžื™ื ื™) of betraying him for promises of reward when David is king, and that they donโ€™t even feel bad (ืื™ืŸ ื—ืœื” ืžื›ื ืขืœื™) about doing it. And itโ€™s not even logical: he says none of them told him about Jonathanโ€™s loyalty to David, but he was clearly aware of it (ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื ื›:ืœ):โ€Ž ื”ืœื•ื ื™ื“ืขืชื™ ื›ื™ ื‘ื—ืจ ืืชื” ืœื‘ืŸ ื™ืฉื™, ืœื‘ืฉืชืš. Doeg was previously called (ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื ื›ื:ื—):โ€Ž ืื‘ื™ืจ ื”ืจืขื™ื ืืฉืจ ืœืฉืื•ืœ, but here he is ื ืฆื‘ ืขืœ ืขื‘ื“ื™ ืฉืื•ืœ which has the implication of being subservient (note ื•ื›ืœ ืขื‘ื“ื™ื• ื ืฆื‘ื™ื ืขืœื™ื• in the previous paragraph, and (ื‘ืจืืฉื™ืช ื™ื—:ื—)โ€Ž ื•ื”ื•ื ืขืžื“ ืขืœื™ื”ื ืชื—ืช ื”ืขืฅ, ื•ื™ืื›ืœื• by ืื‘ืจื”ื). However, Samuel is also described as ื ืฆื‘ over his students (ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื ื™ื˜:ื›)โ€Ž ื•ืฉืžื•ืืœ ืขืžื“ ื ืฆื‘ ืขืœื™ื”ื. So is Doeg lording over the rest of Saulโ€™s council or serving them? I think the ambiguity is intentional; we have a glimpse of the court politics and the jockeying for influence, and Doegโ€™s comments serves to push himself up the hierarchy a little more.

Ginsburg (Legends of the Jews, IV:74) mentions a tradition that Doeg was one of Saulโ€™s oldest servants, from before he ever became king, and that is hinted at when Saul goes to look for his fatherโ€™s donkeys:

Doegโ€™s slander is subtle; he doesnโ€™t technically lie, but he presents the facts slightly out of order and in such a way that it make ืื—ื™ืžืœืš a willing conspirator with David:

Doeg leaves out ืื—ื™ืžืœืš's reticence in dealing with David, and emphasizes the fact that ืื—ื™ืžืœืšโ€Ž โ€œืฉืืœ ืœื• ื‘ื”ืณโ€. We interpreted the phrase ืื—ืจื™ ื”ืืคื•ื“ when ืื—ื™ืžืœืš gave David Goliathโ€™s sword as meaning โ€œafter consulting the ืืคื•ื“ and the ืื•ืจื™ื ื•ืชื•ืžื™ืโ€. Here Doeg makes it seem part of the conspiracy, and is proof that David is trying to take the kingship from Saul:

He doesnโ€™t even listen to ืื—ื™ืžืœืš's defense that he had no reason to doubt Davidโ€™s claim that he was working under Saulโ€™s orders; David has evidently come often to consult with the ืื•ืจื™ื ื•ืชื•ืžื™ื. The only bright spot is the fact that Saulโ€™s servants refuse to obey orders and will not massacre the ื›ื”ื ื™ื of ื ื‘.

Disobeying the king is a capital crime. ืจืฉืดื™ points out that we learn this from ื™ื”ื•ืฉืข:
