After David's wars in Aram, with all the miracles implied in תהילים סח, the text sums up: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> גם אתם הקדיש המלך דוד לה׳ עם הכסף והזהב אשר הקדיש מכל הגוים אשר כבש׃ <b>יב</b> מארם וממואב ומבני עמון ומפלשתים ומעמלק ומשלל הדדעזר בן רחב מלך צובה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק ח</footer></blockquote> There are five wars mentioned here; ארם (of which הדדעזר מלך צובה is part), פלשתים and מואב we just saw in our perek. עמלק was actually a war from back in שמואל א: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יז</b> ויכם דוד מהנשף ועד הערב למחרתם; ולא נמלט מהם איש כי אם ארבע מאות איש נער אשר רכבו על הגמלים וינסו׃ ...<b>כ</b> ויקח דוד את כל הצאן והבקר; נהגו לפני המקנה ההוא ויאמרו זה שלל דוד׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק ל</footer></blockquote> עמון we haven't seen yet. The war with עמון is intimately tied to the story of Batsheva and will occupy a good part of the next section of שמואל ב. There's a war missing here, that is mentioned in the parallel verse in דברי הימים: <blockquote lang=he><p> גם אתם הקדיש המלך דויד לה׳ עם הכסף והזהב אשר נשא מכל הגוים מ<em>אדום</em> וממואב ומבני עמון ומפלשתים ומעמלק׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א יח:יא</footer></blockquote> What's the story with אדום? That's where the text goes next. <hr/> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יג</b> ויעש דוד שם בשבו מהכותו את ארם בגיא מלח שמונה עשר אלף׃ <b>יד</b> וישם באדום נצבים בכל אדום שם נצבים ויהי כל אדום עבדים לדוד; ויושע ה׳ את דוד בכל אשר הלך׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p><b>13</b> And David got him a name when he returned from smiting the Arameans in the Valley of Salt even eighteen thousand men. <b>14</b> And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons and all the Edomites became servants to David׃ And the LORD gave victory to David whithersoever he went.</p> <footer class=source>2 Samuel Chapter 8, 1917 JPS translation</footer></blockquote> Two questions arise: what are the Arameans doing in "the Valley of Salt" which is presumably the Dead Sea valley? And where does Edom fit in? If the Valley of Salt is in fact in Aram (and is not the Dead Sea) then Edom is far away. The 1985 JPS translation takes its cue from the Septuagint: <blockquote lang=el><p>Καὶ ἐποίησεν Δαυιδ ὄνομα καὶ ἐν τω ἀνακάμπτειν αὐτὸν ἐπάταξεν τὴν <em>Ιδουμαίαν</em> ἐν Γαιμελε εἰς ὀκτωκαίδεκα χιλιάδας.</p> <p lang=en>And David made [himself] a name. And when he returned he struck <em>Edom</em> in Gebelem to [the number of] eighteen thousand. </p> <footer class=source>Septuagint, 2 Samuel 8:13</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>David gained fame when he returned from defeating Edom in the Valley of Salt, 18,000 in all.</p> <footer class=source>2 Samuel 8:13, 1985 JPS translation</footer></blockquote> They emend the text from אֲרָם to אֱדֹם. This solves the textual questions, and corresponds to the parallel text in דברי הימים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יב</b> ואבשי בן צרויה הכה את <em>אדום</em> בגיא המלח שמונה עשר אלף׃ <b>יג</b> וישם באדום נציבים ויהיו כל אדום עבדים לדויד; ויושע ה׳ את דויד בכל אשר הלך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק יח</footer></blockquote> (I don't have a problem with the change from דוד to אבשי בן צרויה; David was the king and אבשי was one of his generals) But I don't like emendations that are proposed only to solve our lack of understanding. <blockquote lang=en><p>A police officer sees a drunken man intently searching the ground near a lamppost and asks him the goal of his quest. The inebriate replies that he is looking for his car keys, and the officer helps for a few minutes without success then he asks whether the man is certain that he dropped the keys near the lamppost.</p> <p>“No,” is the reply, “I lost the keys somewhere across the street.” “Why look here?” asks the surprised and irritated officer. “The light is much better here,” the intoxicated man responds with aplomb.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/04/11/better-light/">Quote Investigator, <cite>Did You Lose the Keys Here?</cite></a></footer></blockquote> And we know (מגילה ט,א) that חז״ל edited the Septuagint specifically to eliminate textual difficulties. So I'd rather read ספר שמואל as written, and put a comma in there: "And David made a name for himself, when he returned from smiting the Arameans, in the Valley of Salt". He didn't smite the Arameans in גיא מלח. The battle of גיא מלח happened after the battle of ארם. David's army did not return home, but headed south: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>בשובו</em>: ר״ל עם כי היה עיף ויגע ממלחמת ארם, עכ״ז הכה בגיא מלח וגו׳.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב ח:יג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>בשעה ששלח דוד את יואב לארם נהרים ולארם צובה, פגע באדומיים; בקש לזנבן... (תהילים ס:ב)”וישב יואב ויך את אדום בגיא וגו׳“, אמר יואב אם נחריב את אדום עכשו אין אנו מוצאים בחזרתנו לא אכילה ולא שתיה אלא נניח אותם עד שנכבוש את ארם ונחזור עליהם היינו דכתיב וישב יואב ויך. </p> <footer class=source>ילקוט שמעוני שמואל ב רמז קמז </footer></blockquote> So according to the Midrash, the southern campaign was fundamentally יואב's idea (even though he only appears in the account in תהילים, not דברי הימים or שמואל). And he assumes that he needs to attack Edom. I think that there was a "Manifest Destiny" mindset in David's army. Israel was destined to rule over all the surrounding lands: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יח</b> ביום ההוא כרת ה׳ את אברם ברית לאמר; לזרעך נתתי את הארץ הזאת מנהר מצרים עד הנהר הגדל נהר פרת׃ <b>יט</b> את הקיני ואת הקנזי ואת הקדמני׃ <b>כ</b> ואת החתי ואת הפרזי ואת הרפאים׃ <b>כא</b> ואת האמרי ואת הכנעני ואת הגרגשי ואת היבוסי׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>את הקיני</em>: עשר אומות יש כאן ולא נתן להם אלא שבעה גוים, והשלשה אדום ומואב ועמון, והם קיני קניזי וקדמוני עתידים להיות ירושה לעתיד, שנאמר (ישעיה יא:יד) אדום ומואב משלוח ידם ובני עמון משמעתם.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית טו:יט </footer></blockquote> And the order of the wars (פלשת,‎ מואב,‎ ארם then אדום) reflects this: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יג</b> והנה ה׳ נצב עליו ויאמר אני ה׳ אלקי אברהם אביך ואלקי יצחק; הארץ אשר אתה שכב עליה לך אתננה ולזרעך׃ <b>יד</b> והיה זרעך כעפר הארץ <em>ופרצת ימה וקדמה וצפנה ונגבה</em>; ונברכו בך כל משפחת האדמה ובזרעך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כח</footer></blockquote> So we can understand why the summary pasuk of הכסף והזהב אשר הקדיש מכל הגוים doesn't include Edom: this was a different sort of war. <hr/> But now we need to look at the corresponding פרק תהילים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> למנצח על שושן עדות; מכתם לדוד ללמד׃<br/> <b>ב</b> בהצותו את ארם נהרים ואת ארם צובה;<br/>וישב יואב ויך את אדום בגיא מלח שנים עשר אלף׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק ס</footer></blockquote> Here the general is יואב , not אבשי, and the number dead is 12,000, not 18,000. The Midrash suggests that these are describing two separate wars: <blockquote lang=he><p>כתוב אחד אומר שנים עשר אלף וכתוב אחד אומר שמנה עשר אלף, אלא שתי מלחמות היו אחת של שנים עשר אלף ואחת של שמנה עשר אלף.</p> <footer class=source>ילקוט שמעוני שמואל ב רמז קמז </footer></blockquote> Similarly the Malbim (as his second suggestion): <blockquote lang=he><p> וי״ל ג״כ שהכה באדום שני פעמים, פעם י״ב אלף ופעם י״ח אלף, וכן דעת חז״ל בתנחומא (דברים), ועז״א ”וישם באדום נציבים בכל אדום שם נציבים“, ששם נציבים ומרדו וכבשם כולם וישם נציבים בכל אדום. </p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב ח:יג</footer></blockquote> Most commentators try to combine the three accounts, with an alliance of ארם and אדום: <blockquote lang=he><p>נראה כי מלחמת אדום היתה כשהיתה מלחמת ארם כי כן כתיב בתהילים בהצותו את ארם נהרים ואת ארם צובה ומארם ומאדום היו אלה י״ח אלף. ואמר בזה הספר [שמואל] ארם ור״ל ואשר עמהם והם אדום. ואמר בב׳ הספרים [דברי הימים ותהילים] אדום ור״ל ואשר עמהם והם ארם. ובאומר בדברי הימים כי אבישי עשה מלחמה והכה בהם י״ח אלף ובתילים אמר יואב ואמר י״ב אלף איש, אבישי עשה תחלה המלחמה והכה בהם ו׳ אלפים ואח״כ עשה עמהם יואב מלחמה והכה בהם י״ב אלף; וזה שכתוב בתהילים ”וישב יואב“ כלומר שב אחר כן יואב אחרי אבישי. וזכר בדברי הימים כל המלחמה בשם אבישי לפי שהוא היה תחלת המלחמה זכר כל הי״ח אלף על שמו. ובזה הספר [שמואל] זכר המלחמה בשם דוד כי הוא העיקר.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב ח:יג </footer></blockquote> That's telling a very complicated story. I want to tell a different one, that focuses on תהילים. <hr/> The perek starts: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> למנצח על שושן עדות; מכתם לדוד ללמד׃<br/> <b>ב</b> בהצותו את ארם נהרים ואת ארם צובה;<br/>וישב יואב ויך את אדום בגיא מלח שנים עשר אלף׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק ס</footer></blockquote> This was a song on a "shoshan", presumably a musical instrument: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>שושן</em>: שם כלי נגון עשויה בתמונת שושן.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת ציון, תהלים ס:א</footer></blockquote> And it is an עדות and ללמד: <blockquote lang=he><p> וטעם ללמד שצווה שילמדוהו המשוררים להזכיר תמיד חסד השם שגברה ידו במלחמה <em>אחר שנחלש</em>.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, תהלים ס:א</footer></blockquote> And that is critical for understanding the perek. It's not a song of victory; it's a lament and a prayer for salvation after defeat: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> אלקים זנחתנו פרצתנו; אנפת תשובב לנו׃<br/> <b>ד</b> הרעשתה ארץ פצמתה; רפה שבריה כי מטה׃<br/> <b>ה</b> הראית עמך קשה; השקיתנו יין תרעלה׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק ס</footer></blockquote> And that is how <a href="/I+Spy/">we translated מכתם</a>: a bloodstain. <blockquote lang=he><p>למנצח אל תשחת לדוד מכתם: בשלח שאול; וישמרו את הבית להמיתו׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק נט:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p> A מכתם is a reflection on spilling blood, the indelible nature of bloodstains. Half of the מכתם תהילים‎ are אל תשחת, a prayer to avoid violence. </p> <footer class=source><a href="/I+Spy/">Me, <cite>I Spy</cite></a></footer></blockquote> And that connects to this perek as addressed למנצח: <blockquote lang=en><p>[נצח] the the manifestation of ה׳’s hand in history. In the words of <a href="http://www.aish.com/sp/k/48969806.html">Aish Hatorah’s Kabbalah 101</a>, "Netzach refers to actions of G-d that are <i lang=he>chesed</i>, ‘kindness,’ in essence, but are presented through a prelude of harshness".</p> <footer class=source><a href="/I+Spy/">Me, <cite>I Spy</cite></a></footer></blockquote> What happened in the battle of גיא מלח? <hr/> I think to answer that we have to look at the Targum on this perek. But first we have to understand what the תרגום תהילים is (and what it is not). There are two "authorized" translations of תנ״ך, from the time of the תנאים: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואמר רבי ירמיה ואיתימא רבי חייא בר אבא: תרגום של תורה אונקלוס הגר אמרי מפי ר' אליעזר ור' יהושע, תרגום של נביאים יונתן בן עוזיאל אמרי, מפי חגי זכריה ומלאכי ונזדעזעה ארץ ישראל ארבע מאות פרסה על ארבע מאות פרסה. יצתה בת קול ואמרה: מי הוא זה שגילה סתריי לבני אדם? עמד יונתן בן עוזיאל על רגליו ואמר: אני הוא שגיליתי סתריך לבני אדם, גלוי וידוע לפניך שלא לכבודי עשיתי ולא לכבוד אבא, אלא לכבודך עשיתי, שלא ירבו מחלוקות בישראל. ועוד ביקש לגלות תרגום של כתובים, יצתה בת קול ואמרה לו: דייך! מאי טעמא? משום דאית ביה קץ משיח.</p> <footer class=source>מגילה ג,א</footer></blockquote> So there is no "official" targum on כתובים. But people certainly translated them, and we have a number of תרגומים on תנ״ך, many of which contain more aggadic expansions than the standard תרגום אונקלוס and תרגום יונתן. As an aside, one of these, called תרגום ירושלמי, is often printed in מקראות גדולות. But it was labelled in early printings as ת״י, which was read as תרגום יונתן and often called that today. So smart people who want you to know how smart they are, will cite the "תרגום יונתן על התורה"as "Targum Pseudo-Jonathan". The Bar Ilan database calls it "התרגום המיוחס ליונתן". The original <a href="http://primo.nli.org.il/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDisplay.do?vid=NLI&docId=NNL_ALEPH001725628">מקראות גדולות by Daniel Bomberg</a> has a targum on תהילים, called תרגום רב יוסף, attributed to the blind third-generation Amora,רב יוסף בר חייא‎: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>כדמתרגם רב יוסף</em>: נקט רב יוסף לפי שהיה בקי בתרגום שיש כמה ענייני תרגום ולא כדפירש בעלמא לפי שהיה סגי נהור ודברים שבכתב אי אתה רשאי לומר על פה ולכך היה אומר תרגום דמשום עת לעשות אמר התם דשרי ואין לך עת לעשות גדול מזה.</p> <footer class=source>תוספות בבא קמא ג,ב</footer></blockquote> That would put it in the fourth century CE. There's one interesting bit of internal evidence for its date. <blockquote lang=he><p>מי יבלני עיר מבצר; מי נחני עד אדום׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים קח:יא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וכדון מן אוביל יתי עד כרכא תקיפא מן דברני עד אדום׃</p> <footer class=source>תרגום תהילים המובא ב־מקראות גדולות מודרניים, שם</footer></blockquote> But the Bomberg version explicits mentions Rome and Constantinople: <blockquote lang=he><p>וּכְדוּן דְחָבִית מָן אוֹכִיל יָתִי עַד כְּרַכָא דְרוֹמִי רַשִּיעָא מָן דַבַֹרְנִי עַד קוּשְׁנְטִינָא דֶּאֱדוֹם</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://bookreader.nli.org.il/NliBookViewer/?ie_pid=IE13582642&ie_dvs=1523986113291~546&hideSearch=yes&pageProgression=lr&rep_pid=REP13586992&is_mobile=false&_ga=2.183709412.310710773.1523985916-461382381.1523985916&is_rtl=true&dps_dvs=1523986113291~546&dps_pid=IE13582642#page/n0/mode/2up">תרגום תהילים המובא ב־מקראות גדולות ויניציאה, דניאל בומבירג (רע״ח), שם, עמ׳ 465</a></footer></blockquote> Similarly in manuscript: <blockquote lang=he><p>וכדון מן אוביל יתי עד כרכא דרומי רשיעתא מאן דברני עד קושטנטינא דאדום׃</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://dioscorides.ucm.es/proyecto_digitalizacion/index.php?doc=5309456445&y=2011&p=223">תרגום תהילים ב־כתב יד, אוניברסיטת מדריד, שם</a></footer></blockquote> Now Constantinople became the capital of the eastern half of the Roman empire in 330 CE, and Rome (the city) fell as capital of the empire in 476, so <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=2-_ZHYjTFT0C&lpg=PA2&dq=The%20Aramaic%20bible%20psalms%20Constantinople&pg=PA2#v=onepage&q=The%20Aramaic%20bible%20psalms%20Constantinople&f=false">presumably the תרגום תהילים was written between those dates.</a> So the תרגום תהילים isn't as "authoritative" as תרגום אונקלוס, but it has some historic validity. <hr/> So how does the Targum render our perek? <blockquote lang=he><p>כד כנש דוד משרין ועבר על איגר סהדותא ואגיח עם ארם די עם צובא ומן בתר כן תב יואב ומחא ית אדומאי במישור מלחא ונפלו מן חיליהון דדוד ויואב תריסר אלפין.</p> <footer class=source>תרגום תהילים, ס:ב</footer></blockquote> <em>The twelve thousand were the Israelite soldiers who died.</em> Yoav attacked Edom after the glorious victory in Aram, and lost. That's why תהילים ס is a lament. Avishai and his victory, with the eighteen thousand enemy casualties, came after. And it goes further: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> ויקם ה׳ שטן לשלמה את הדד האדמי; מזרע המלך הוא באדום׃ <b>טו</b> ויהי בהיות דוד את אדום בעלות יואב שר הצבא לקבר את החללים; ויך כל זכר באדום׃ <b>טז</b> כי ששת חדשים ישב שם יואב וכל ישראל עד הכרית כל זכר באדום׃ <b>יז</b> ויברח אדד הוא ואנשים אדמיים מעבדי אביו אתו לבוא מצרים; והדד נער קטן׃ <b>יח</b> ויקמו ממדין ויבאו פארן; ויקחו אנשים עמם מפארן ויבאו מצרים אל פרעה מלך מצרים ויתן לו בית ולחם אמר לו וארץ נתן לו׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א פרק יא</footer></blockquote> So when David finally takes Edom, Yoav slaughters all the men over the course of six months. What was that fame? This was the Yom Kippur War to מלחמת הר הבשן's Six Day War. The שם was that, even though they eked out a victory in the end, the Israelites could be defeated. That's the "numbness" that David refers to. <blockquote lang=en><p>We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children.
