Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

When we last left off, David had tried to get the ืืจื•ืŸ to Jerusalem but failed. For three months, it sits in the house of ืขื‘ื“ ืื“ื.

Once more the difference in emphasis between Samuel and Chronicles is striking. In Samuel it states simply, โ€œand David went and brought the Arkโ€ and no mention of โ€œall Israelโ€.

ืจืฉืดื™, ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื ื ื˜ื•:ื›ื˜

ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื goes into a lot more detail about the ceremony and the ritual associated with the ืืจื•ืŸ, and this continues for another two chapters. ืกืคืจ ืฉืžื•ืืœ doesnโ€™t deal with the ืžืฉื›ืŸ/ืžืงื“ืฉ at all. From ืฉืžื•ืืœ's point of view, once the ืžืฉื›ืŸ is destroyed in chapter 4, it never comes back. ืกืคืจ ืฉืžื•ืืœ is more about David as person and as king. Iโ€™m interested in the religious side (as seen in ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื) and weโ€™ll spend several shiurim looking at ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื and the corresponding ืชื”ื™ืœื™ื.

One detail that ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื adds is ื•ื™ืขืฉ ืœื• ื‘ืชื™ื ื‘ืขื™ืจ ื“ื•ื™ื“; ื•ื™ื›ืŸ ืžืงื•ื ืœืืจื•ืŸ ื”ืืœืงื™ื ื•ื™ื˜ ืœื• ืื”ืœ. That phrase, ื•ื™ืขืฉ ืœื• ื‘ืชื™ื, is unusual (the usual verb is ื•ื™ื‘ืŸ) and itโ€™s unclear what it means here. David has already built the residential area of Jerusalem (ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื‘ ื”:ื˜)โ€Ž ื•ื™ื‘ืŸ ื“ื•ื“ ืกื‘ื™ื‘ ืžืŸ ื”ืžืœื•ื ื•ื‘ื™ืชื”, and he already has a palace: (ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื‘ ื”:ื™ื)โ€Žื•ื™ืฉืœื— ื—ื™ืจื ืžืœืš ืฆืจ ืžืœืื›ื™ืโ€ฆื•ื™ื‘ื ื• ื‘ื™ืช ืœื“ื•ื“. Rabbi Eisemann suggests itโ€™s a hint to the earlier use of the phrase:

So this is David establishing not literal houses but the institutions of ื‘ืชื™ ื›ื”ื•ื ื” ื•ืžืœื›ื•ืช. On a more literal level, David builds a government complex, with his palace, offices and now a place for the ืืจื•ืŸ, anticipating that he will build the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ. Metzudot understands ื•ื™ื›ืŸ ืžืงื•ื as just setting aside the place:

ื•ื™ื›ืŸ ื•ื›ื•ืณ: ื”ื›ื™ืŸ ืžืงื•ื ืขืœ ื”ืืจื•ืŸ ื•ืคื™ืจืฉ ืขืœื™ื• ืื•ื”ืœ.

So what David is doing is rebuilding the ืžืฉื›ืŸ ืฉื™ืœื”. Just as when he tried to bring the ืืจื•ืŸ to Jerusalem, he is symbolically undoing the ื—ื•ืจื‘ืŸ ืฉื™ืœื”โ€Ž from 20 years before. He will reset the clock, then move forward turning it into the eternal ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ.

But David doesnโ€™t use that building yet. He is too scared after the death of Uzza and leaves the ืืจื•ืŸ with ืขื‘ื“ ืื“ื, who is โ€œblessedโ€. What was the nature of that blessing? Thereโ€™s a hint later in ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื:

While having 62 grandchildren sounds like a wonderful ื‘ืจื›ื”, itโ€™s hard to see how David could have recognized that blessing in only 3 months. The Midrash has a more extreme version:

The ืžืฉื‘ืฆื•ืช ื–ื”ื‘ cites the ื’ืจืดื (which I cannot find) that if there was an open miracle like the midrash, itโ€™s possible to David to have recognized that ื•ื™ื‘ืจืš ื”ืณ ืืช ืขื‘ื“ ืื“ื ื•ืืช ื›ืœ ื‘ื™ืชื•. He will be appointed to be the ื›ื”ืŸ ื’ื“ื•ืœ with the ืืจื•ืŸ in Jerusalem. ืฆื“ื•ืง was mentioned as one of the leaders of the ื›ื”ื ื™ื (he is called in ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื ื ื™ื‘:ื›ื˜โ€Ž ื ืขืจ ื’ื‘ื•ืจ ื—ื™ืœ) who came to David in Hebron. The expression ื•ืืฉืคืจ ืื—ื“ ื•ืืฉื™ืฉื” ืื—ืช is unclear; I agree with the King James translation (which is from Rashi):

And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.

2 Samuel 6:19, King James Version

ืฉืžื•ืืœ describes David as wearing an ืืคื•ื“, which is sometimes taken meaning that he was wearing only and ืืคื•ื“, and that is what Michal was complaining about. He was literally exposing himself by spinning so hard. But ื“ื‘ืจื™ ื”ื™ืžื™ื tells us thatโ€™s not so (evidently the rumors existed in Ezraโ€™s time). He had a robe; the ืืคื•ื“ was a decorative sign of honor, like a tie today.

Weโ€™ve dealt with Michal and her relationship with David and her lack of children in the past. So I wonโ€™t go into that again.

But David here has the right balance of ืฉืžื—ื” and ืฉื—ื•ืง. We have to serve ื”ืณ with all our ืžื™ื“ื•ืช. And part of what David sets up is to assign the Levites as ืฉืขืจื™ื and ื”ืžืฉืจืจื™ื. Weโ€™ll look at that in more detail next time.
