As we said [last time](prev) פסוקי דזמרא is about ה׳’s פרנסה, supporting the world. It is the הלל not of what we would call "miracles", but of everyday existence. The very fact that the universe exists is a miracle, and we acknowlege that by both declaring that fact to the world, and by praying to הקב״ה for that פרנסה. So פרק קמו starts with David talking to himself, convincing himself that he needs to pray. As we quoted the נפש הרב, prayer needs a מתיר, needs permission. {:he} ><b>א</b> הללויה;<br/> הללי נפשי את ה׳׃<br/> <b>ב</b> אהללה ה׳ בחיי; אזמרה לאלקי בעודי׃ --תהילים פרק קמו He is going to sing to ה׳ with his נפש, his חיים and his "עוד".‎ נפש is his "self", what makes him human; that's what does the singing, and Malbim says that חיי and עודי don't mean "while I am alive", but "for my life", which has two aspects. {:he} ><em>אהללה ה' בחיי</em>: הילול אחד על החיים, ו<em>אזמרה לאלקי בעודי</em>: ועוד אזמר על ה"עוד" והיתרון שנתן לי חוץ מן החיים. --מלבי״ם, תהילים קמו:ב חיים is common to everyone, but every human being is unique. What makes me different is ה"עוד" והיתרון שנתן לי, and that is why *I* need to praise ה׳. You can't do that for me, because you are not me. >This is a personal gift which forges a private bond between every mortal and his Maker. --Artscroll _Tehillim_, 146:2 {:he} ><b>ג</b> אל תבטחו בנדיבים בבן אדם שאין לו תשועה׃<br/> <b>ד</b> תצא רוחו ישב לאדמתו; ביום ההוא אבדו עשתנתיו׃ --תהילים פרק קמו Now David addresses his audience. Everyone needs פרנסה, and no human being can provide it. Even the most generous, well-meaning--the נדיבים--are finite and mortal. עשתנתיו is usually translated "plans" but I think it would be better defined as "attention". You may have the richest, most powerful and most generous patron, but inevitably that attention will be lost. {:he} > ויקרב אליו רב החבל ויאמר לו מה לך נרדם; קום קרא אל אלקיך אולי יתעשת האלקים לנו ולא נאבד׃ --יונה א:ו So who can we rely on for support? {:he} > אשרי שא־ל יעקב בעזרו; שׂברו על ה׳ אלקיו׃ --תהילים קמו:ה That pasuk is an allusion to the pasuk from אשרי: {:he} >עיני כל אליך ישׂברו; ואתה נותן להם את אכלם בעתו׃ --תהילים קמה:טו It's interesting that ה׳ is described as א־ל יעקב, when the perek says nothing about ה׳ as specifically the G-d of Israel: {:he} > עשה שמים וארץ את הים ואת כל אשר בם;<br/> השמר אמת לעולם׃ --תהילים קמו:ו I think what David is implying here is that ה׳ is in fact the עשה שמים וארץ, but only a tiny subset of humanity acknowledges that. It is how Rashi understands the Shema: {:he} >שמע ישראל; ה׳ אלקינו ה׳  אחד׃ --דברים ו:ד {:he} ><em>ה' אלקינו ה' אחד</em>: ה' שהוא אלקינו עתה, ולא אלקי האמות, הוא עתיד להיות ה' אחד, שנאמר (צפניה ג:ט) כִּי אָז אֶהְפֹּךְ אֶל עַמִּים שָׂפָה בְרוּרָה לִקְרֹא כֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם ה׳, ונאמר (זכריה יד:ט) [וְהָיָה ה׳ לְמֶלֶךְ עַל כׇּל הָאָרֶץ] בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה ה׳ אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד. --רש״י, דברים ו:ד We are saying that it is our G-d who sustains the entire world, but He is only *ours* in the sense that we serve him. As it says in אשרי: {:he} ><b>ח</b> חנון ורחום ה׳; ארך אפים וגדל חסד׃<br/> <b>ט</b> טוב ה׳ לכל; ורחמיו על כל מעשיו׃ --תהילים פרק קמה And so the way we praise Him in the perek corresponds to the pasuk in אשרי,‎ צדיק ה׳ בכל דרכיו; וחסיד בכל מעשיו. {:he} ><b>ז</b> עשה משפט לעשוקים נתן לחם לרעבים; ה׳ מתיר אסורים׃<br/> <b>ח</b> ה׳ פקח עורים ה׳ זקף כפופים; ה׳ אהב צדיקים׃<br/> <b>ט</b> ה׳ שמר את גרים יתום ואלמנה יעודד; ודרך רשעים יעות׃ --תהילים פרק קמו יתום ואלמנה יעודד is generally translated as "He supports the widow and the orphan", but I think there is a hint to the beginning of the perek, אזמרה לאלקי בעודי. The עוד of a human being is the fact that they are unique, and part of משפט is to recognize that even the most downtrodden of society are human, with their own unique human dignity. ה׳ gives them their עוד:‎ יתום ואלמנה יעודד. And after we declare the praise of ה׳ as we've described, we return to the theme that was hinted with א־ל יעקב. {:he} >ימלך ה׳ לעולם אלקיך ציון לדר ודר;<br/> הללויה׃ --תהילים קמו:י ה׳ is אלקי ציון specifically. Rav Schwab (in [_Rav Schwab on Prayer_](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781578195121.html), p. 436) points out that ציון here does not mean "Jerusalem" , but rather כנסת ישראל. {:he} >וָאָשִׂם דְּבָרַי בְּפִיךָ וּבְצֵל יָדִי כִּסִּיתִיךָ ;לִנְטֹעַ שָׁמַיִם וְלִיסֹד אָרֶץ וְלֵאמֹר לְצִיּוֹן עַמִּי אָתָּה׃ --ישעיהו נא:טז {:he} >א"ר חנינא בר פפא: חיזרנו על כל המקרא ולא מצינו מקום שנקראו ישראל ציון. איכן מצינו כן? וְלֵאמֹר לְצִיּוֹן עַמִּי אָתָּה. --פסיקתא דרב כהנא יט:ו The perek in ישעיהו is talking about the אחרית הימים, when the whole world will acknowledge מלכות ה׳, but it is Israel that will lead the way. A ציון is a signpost: {:he} >הַצִּיבִי לָךְ צִיֻּנִים שִׂמִי לָךְ תַּמְרוּרִים שִׁתִי לִבֵּךְ לַמְסִלָּה דֶּרֶךְ הָלָכְתְּ; שׁוּבִי בְּתוּלַת יִשְׂרָאֵל שֻׁבִי אֶל עָרַיִךְ אֵלֶּה׃ --ירמיהו לא:כא Israel is ציון if it is a signpost, a way for others to come closer to הקב״ה. And that is the way the פסיקתא דרב כהנא interprets that pasuk from ישעיהו: {:he} >ר' יהושע דסכנין בשם ר' לוי: וָאָשִׂם דְּבָרַי בְּפִיךָ, אילו דברי תורה. וּבְצֵל יָדִי כִּסִּיתִיךָ, זו גמילות חסדים. --פסיקתא דרב כהנא יט:ו >[W]e yearn for the time when the whole world will recognize /HaKadosh Baruch Hu/ as אלקיך ציון--because it was the Jewish nation--/Tziyon/--which taught the world about the existence of /HaKadosh Baruch Hu/ and of His relationship with his creatures. Yerushalayim will be the capital of the united world, and the /Beis HaMikdash/ will become the (ישעיהו נו:ז)‎ בית תפלה...לכל העמים. --Rav Shimon Schwab, [_Rav Schwab on Prayer_](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781578195121.html), pp. 436-437 >At that time, the Jewish people will finally have achieved its goal, that of becoming the (שמות יט:ו)‎ ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש, the role model for the rest of the world, the light to the nations, אור לגוים, which was its mission throughout history. --Rav Shimon Schwab, [_Rav Schwab on Prayer_](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781578195121.html), p. 185 And that's what we've said that הלל means. Not just to praise ה׳, but to sing those praises to the entire world. ---- That's a wonderfully universal vision, of ה׳ as נתן לחם לרעבים. The next perek is surprisingly much more parochial: בונה ירושלם ה׳...מגיד דברו ליעקב...לא עשה כן לכל גוי. It corresponds to the next pasuk of אשרי, ‎ קרוב ה׳ לכל קראיו לכל אשר יקראהו באמת. It's surprising because we tend to think of the process in the reverse order, as Rashi put it: ה' שהוא אלקינו עתה, ולא אלקי האמות, הוא עתיד להיות ה' אחד. {:he} >הללויה;<br/> כי טוב זמרה אלקינו כי נעים נאוה תהלה׃<br/> --תהילים פרק קמז:א The previous perek was first person singular, אהללה ה׳. This is plural: זמרה אלקינו. And I think that is the message of this perek: not that we are so special because ה׳ loves us more than the rest of the world, but that we, as a community, as כנסת ישראל, have a particular responsibility to say תהלה. We are going from a מתיר, permission to pray, to a statement that ה׳ *wants* our prayers. We see that in פסוק יא:‎ רוצה ה׳ את יראיו את המיחלים לחסדו. {:he} >א"ר יצחק: מפני מה היו אבותינו עקורים? מפני שהקב"ה מתאוה לתפלתן של צדיקים. --יבמות סד,א The ברכה after most foods is בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת רַבּוֹת וְחֶסְרוֹנָן. We praise ה׳ for creating us with all of our needs, because ה׳ wants us to ask for what we need, to be מיחלים לחסדו. It's a hard concept to understand, but one way of looking at it is that it is part of ה׳'s חסדץ It actually makes us partners with ה׳ in creation; we have to do *something*. At מתן תורה,‎ ה׳ made it clear that פרנסת העולם was now our responsibility as well. {:he} >אמר ריש לקיש, מאי דכתיב (בראשית א:לא): וַיְהִי עֶרֶב וַיְהִי בֹקֶר יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי, ה׳ יתירה למה לי?—מלמד שהתנה הקדוש ברוך הוא עם מעשה בראשית ואמר להם: אם ישראל מקבלים התורה—אתם מתקיימין, ואם לאו—אני מחזיר אתכם לתוהו ובוהו. --שבת פח ע,א Rav Hutner points out that it is a much greater חסד to allow the recipient of your gift to earn it: {:he} >על ידי מתן תורה נתרבתה ונתגדלה פעולתה של מדת החסד, עד כדי נתינת מקום לקיום העולמות בתור תשלום שכר, בעוד שבאותם הכ״ו דורות שלפני מתן תורה היה קיום העולמות בא בתור מתנת חנם...והך דקאמר שאותם העשרים וששה דורות נתקיימו בחסדו של מקום, היינו דוגמת הפרנסה, שמפרנסים את הילד אדעתא דבשעת גדולו יהיה סמוך על שלחן עצמו. --פחד יצחק ראש השנה ד:ד We're going to see that aspect of the תהלה later. In this pasuk itself, the expression "for נאוה תהלה is pleasant" is ambiguous, since the word נאוה is ambiguous: {:he} > עזי וזמרת יה ויהי לי לישועה; זה א־לי ואנוהו אלקי אבי וארממנהו׃ --שמות טו:ב {:he} ><em>ואנוהו</em>: אנקלוס תרגם לשון נָוֶה, (ישעיהו לג:כ) נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן...דבר אחר--ואנוהו לשון נוֹי, אספר נויו ושבחו לבאי עולם. --רש״י, שמות טו:ב נאוה תהלה means both "beautiful praise" and "the Temple of praise", as David continues: {:he} >בונה ירושלם ה׳; נדחי ישראל יכנס׃ --תהילים פרק קמז:ב Jerusalem, with the בית המקדש, is the place where זמרה אלקינו originates. {:he} >אָמַר רַבִּי שְׁמוּאֵל בַּר נַחְמָנִי, מָסֹרֶת אַגָּדָה הִיא, שֶׁאֵין יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נִבְנֵית עַד שֶׁיִּתְכַּנְּסוּ הַגָּלֻיּוֹת. וְאִם יֹאמַר לְךָ אָדָם, שֶׁכְּבָר נִתְקַבְּצוּ הַגָּלֻיּוֹת וְלֹא נִבְנֵית יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, אַל תַּאֲמִין. לָמָּה, שֶׁכָּךְ כְּתִיב: בּוֹנֵה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם ה', וְאַחַר כָּךְ נִדְחֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יְכַנֵּס. --מדרש תנחומא, נח יא:יא The Tanchuma is telling us we are reading the pasuk wrong: it's not that ה׳ will build Jerusalem, and *then* gather the exiles; it's that the definition of a build Jerusalem *is* the people that are in it. {:he} ><b>ג</b> ירושלם הבנויה כעיר שחברה לה יחדו׃<br/> <b>ד</b> ששם עלו שבטים שבטי י־ה עדות לישראל; להדות לשם ה׳׃ --תהילים פרק קכב David wants to build the בית המקדש so that it can become a בית תפלה as we said above. The actual praise we offer in this perek is not about ה׳'s providence in providing physical sustenance, but about psychological "sustenance". {:he} ><b>ג</b> הרפא לשבורי לב; ומחבש לעצבותם׃<br/> <b>ד</b> מונה מספר לכוכבים; לכלם שמות יקרא׃<br/> <b>ה</b> גדול אדונינו ורב כח; לתבונתו אין מספר׃<br/> <b>ו</b> מעודד ענוים ה׳; משפיל רשעים עדי ארץ׃ --תהילים פרק קמז >Rabbi Simcha Bunim of P'shis'cha makes a fascinating observation: since the Psalmist praised G-d as the Healer of broken hearts, G-d evidently does not want His servants to have broken hearts. Yet, other verses in the Book of Psalms indicate that a broken, contrite heart is desirable: [(תהילים לד:יט) קָרוֹב ה׳ לְנִשְׁבְּרֵי לֵב; וְאֶת דַּכְּאֵי רוּחַ יוֹשִׁיעַ and (תהילים נא:יט) זִבְחֵי אֱלֹקִים רוּחַ נִשְׁבָּרָה; לֵב נִשְׁבָּר וְנִדְכֶּה אֱלֹקִים לֹא תִבְזֶה]. > Rabbi Simcha Bunim explains that the truly humble person does not belittle his own values. Rather, he recognizes his special talents and worth, but credits G-d for all the gifts he enjoys...Thus the Psalmist declares that G-d cures the broken-hearted when He "binds up their sorrows", i.e., G-d protects them from improper humility and despair. --Artscroll /Tehillim/, 147:3 The רפואה here is parallel to יתום ואלמנה יעודד in the previous perek, and the מעודד ענוים ה׳ of פסוק ו.‎ ה׳ lets each of us know that we are important, that we matter to the existence of the universe. Similarly, מונה מספר לכוכבים isn't really about stars; it's about *us*: {:he} ><em>לכלם שמות יקרא</em>: ופירושו כי הא־ל יתברך בראם כולם במספר ידוע אצלו ולכל אחד מהם קרא שם הנאות לו לפי הדבר אשר בעבורו נברא לסיבת אותו הדבר או לסיבת עצמו. --רד״ק, תהילים קמז:ד {:he} ><em>ואלה שמות בני ישראל</em>: אף על פי שמנאן בחייהן בשמותן, חזר ומנאן במיתתן, להודיע חבתן שנמשלו לכוכבים, שמוציאן ומכניסן במספר ובשמותם, שנאמר (ישעיהו מ:כו) הַמּוֹצִיא בְמִסְפָּר צְבָאָם לְכֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם יִקְרָא. --רש״י, שמות א:א Rashi cites ישעיהו, not תהילים, because Yeshaya makes the metaphor explicit: {:he} ><b>כה</b> וְאֶל מִי תְדַמְּיוּנִי וְאֶשְׁוֶה יֹאמַר קָדוֹשׁ׃ <b>כו</b> שְׂאוּ מָרוֹם עֵינֵיכֶם וּרְאוּ מִי בָרָא אֵלֶּה הַמּוֹצִיא בְמִסְפָּר צְבָאָם; לְכֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם יִקְרָא מֵרֹב אוֹנִים וְאַמִּיץ כֹּחַ אִישׁ לֹא נֶעְדָּר׃ > ...<b>כז</b> לָמָּה תֹאמַר יַעֲקֹב וּתְדַבֵּר יִשְׂרָאֵל; נִסְתְּרָה דַרְכִּי מֵה׳ וּמֵאֱלֹקַי מִשְׁפָּטִי יַעֲבוֹר׃ <b>כח</b> הֲלוֹא יָדַעְתָּ אִם לֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ אֱלֹקֵי עוֹלָם ה׳ בּוֹרֵא קְצוֹת הָאָרֶץ לֹא יִיעַף וְלֹא יִיגָע; אֵין חֵקֶר לִתְבוּנָתוֹ׃...<b>לא</b> וְקוֹיֵ ה׳ יַחֲלִיפוּ כֹחַ יַעֲלוּ אֵבֶר כַּנְּשָׁרִים; יָרוּצוּ וְלֹא יִיגָעוּ יֵלְכוּ וְלֹא יִיעָפוּ׃ --ישעיהו פרק מ {:he} >נאמר (שמות יט:ה-ו) וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה מִכׇּל הָעַמִּים…וְאַתֶּם תִּהְיוּ לִי מַמְלֶכֶת כֹּהֲנִים וְגוֹי קָדוֹשׁ; לומר שכל אחד מהם יהיה לו חשיבות בפני עצמו כמלך וכהן וכעין שנאמר (תהלים פז:ה) וּלְצִיּוֹן יֵאָמַר אִישׁ וְאִישׁ יֻלַּד בָּהּ; וְהוּא יְכוֹנְנֶהָ עֶלְיוֹן. ולפי זאת הסגלה נאמר ג״כ בכוכבים (ישעיהו מ:כו) לְכֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם יִקְרָא...אִישׁ לֹא נֶעְדָּר. יאמר שהוצאתו אותם על המספר האישיי, יורה כי מרוב אונו ועוצם כחו בראם בתבונה ושלימות שאיש מהם לא נעדר לעד לעולם…כי באמת חבה יתירה נודעת להם וזה היה טעם...למה שיזכור הכתוכ לכל אחד ואחד בשמו ויחסו בשוה כמשפט הראשון כי כלם שוים במעלה ומעלת כל אחד נפרדת ממעלת חברו כמו המזלות שהם נפרדים באיכותן ושוים במעלתן וכל אחד ראוי להמנות בפני עצמו… --עקידת יצחק, במדבר עב And so we come back to our theme: *we*--the ones who have a relationship with הקב״ה--should praise ה׳ for His feeding the world: {:he} ><b>ז</b> ענו לה׳ בתודה; זמרו לאלקינו בכנור׃<br/> <b>ח</b> המכסה שמים בעבים המכין לארץ מטר;<br/> המצמיח הרים חציר׃<br/> <b>ט</b> נותן לבהמה לחמה; לבני ערב אשר יקראו׃ --תהילים פרק קמז The reason that we have a particular relationship with הקב״ה is not because we are inherently special, but because we are יראיו; we are מיחלים לחסדו: we pray to ה׳, and create the relationship, and therefore we *need* to pray to ה׳. It's the message from אשרי:‎ קרוב ה׳ לכל קראיו לכל אשר יקראהו באמת. {:he} ><b>י</b> לא בגבורת הסוס יחפץ; לא בשוקי האיש ירצה׃<br/> <b>יא</b> רוצה ה׳ את יראיו את המיחלים לחסדו׃<br/> <b>יב</b> שבחי ירושלם את ה׳; הללי אלקיך ציון׃ --תהילים פרק קמז ירושלם and ציון are obviously synecdoches for the Jewish people. When you praise ה׳,‎ שבחי ירושלם את ה׳, then ה׳ becomes אלקיך, *yours*: {:he} >אנכי ה׳ אלקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים׃ --שמות כ:ב >This singular relationship which binds G-d with man, within one fellowship, is a result not of creation, but of יציאת מצרים. > ...It is interesting that this passuk of the Decalogue represents the first time that G-d took His name, changed it to a possessive noun, and said אנכי ה׳ אלקיך, I am *thy* G-d; you own Me; I am your property. I own you as creator; you own Me as a member of the covenantal community. --Rabbi Joseph B. It's a virtuous cycle. {:he} ><b>יג</b> כי חזק בריחי שעריך; ברך בניך בקרבך׃<br/> <b>יד</b> השם גבולך שלום; חלב חטים ישביעך׃ --תהילים פרק קמז The perek ends with an interesting metaphor: {:he} ><b>טו</b> השלח אמרתו ארץ; עד מהרה ירוץ דברו׃<br/> <b>טז</b> הנתן שלג כצמר; כפור כאפר יפזר׃<br/> <b>יז</b> משליך קרחו כפתים; לפני קרתו מי יעמד׃<br/> <b>יח</b> ישלח דברו וימסם; ישב רוחו יזלו מים׃<br/> <b>יט</b> מגיד דברו ליעקב; חקיו ומשפטיו לישראל׃<br/> <b>כ</b> לא עשה כן לכל גוי ומשפטים בל ידעום;<br/> הללויה׃ --תהילים פרק קמז I assume David wrote this on one of those mornings when Jerusalem gets a couple of millimeters of snow and traffic is snarled for hours, and he's stuck on a hungry donkey on כביש 1. The Malbim says the metaphor is about ה׳'s providence, and reward and punishment: {:he} ><em>הנותן שלג כצמר</em>: ממשיל האמירה ששלח לרע בציור השלג והכפור והקרח שמקפיא את המים. --מלבי"ם, תהילים קמז:טז {:he} ><em>ישלח דברו וימסם</em>: ר"ל ישיב את הגזרה ויבטלנה, והשפע תרד כמו בתחלה, וישב רוח והמים יזלו בשפע רב ולא יהיו מוקפאים, ר"ל יבטל את הרע. --מלבי"ם, תהילים קמז:יח {:he} >מגיד וזה יהיה ע"י שיגיד דברו ליעקב, ויודיעם ע"י הנביאים את הגזרה שרוצה לגזור עליהם, והם שבים בתשובה ומבטלים את הרעה, ולישראל שהם הגדולים שבאומה, מגיד חקיו ומשפטיו והם הולכים בחקות התורה וינחם על הרעה. --מלבי"ם, תהילים קמז:יט The other way to read this is as a metaphor for the revelation of "אמרתו", the Torah. Water is a metaphor for Torah: {:he} ><b>ב</b> יערף כמטר לקחי תזל כטל אמרתי<br/> כשעירם עלי דשא וכרביבים עלי עשב׃<br/> <b>ג</b> כי שם ה׳ אקרא; הבו גדל לאלקינו׃<br/> --דברים פרק לב Making that water into ice, ה׳'s קרחו, symbolizes of the fact that ה׳'s word is fundamentally inaccessible: there's a wall of ice that we can barely see through that separates us: {:he} ><b>כב</b> ודמות על ראשי החיה רקיע כעין הקרח הנורא נטוי על ראשיהם מלמעלה׃...<b>כו</b> וממעל לרקיע אשר על ראשם כמראה אבן ספיר דמות כסא; ועל דמות הכסא דמות כמראה אדם עליו מלמעלה׃...<b>כח</b> כמראה הקשת אשר יהיה בענן ביום הגשם כן מראה הנגה סביב הוא מראה דמות כבוד ה׳; ואראה ואפל על פני ואשמע קול מדבר׃ --יחזקאל פרק א But ה׳ breaks that "ice" into פתים, little gentle snowflakes, because לפני קרתו מי יעמד. >The ultimate justice and righteousness [חקיו ומשפטיו of פסוק יט] in the eyes of /HaKadosh Baruch Hu/ and how it relates to our concepts of justice, can be compared to the קרח הנורא, that awesome mass of ice which /HaKadosh Baruch Hu/ sends down to us in small bits and pieces, as snow, hail and frost, which we can utilize. The other nations have משפטים בל ידעום, ethical laws (that's the meaning of משפטים as opposed to חקים) but without *revelation*, and therefore without that relationship.
