Malbim suggests that it was only now that the fact of Davidโs anointing became known:

But Saul himself clearly knew that David would reign, and even the Philistines called him (ืฉืืืื ื ืื:ืื)โ ืืื ืืื ืืืจืฅ. So the anointing was clearly a very open secret, if a secret at all. And why would the secret get out only after Samuel had died? I think that it was Samuelโs death that made David run. Samuel was Saulโs last connection to his own kingship, and to the ืจืื ื ืืืื that he had achieved. With Samuelโs death, there was not going back to โthe good old daysโ. Saul himself, in a few more chapters, will actually seek out a medium to contact Samuelโs spirit. I think David sensed that Saul was now lost in despair, and whatevery peace he had felt in the last chapter was now gone. In clinical terms, his paranoia had relapsed, and there would be no further remission.
And David was right. We will see that Saul cuts off the family connection by taking Michal away from David, then going off to try to kill him yet again.
There are three chapters of ืชืืืืืโ relevant to this period of Davidโs life. The first is a reflection on his priorities in his internal exile in the deserts of ืืืืื:

The Artscroll Tehillim cites the Darash Moshe that David celebrates the fact that, even as an outcast, he can remain in ืืืืจ ืืืืื, and therefore ืืืงืื ืึพืื ืืชื,โ ืืณ is still my G-d, since (ืืชืืืืช ืงื,ื)โ ืื ืืืจ ืืืืฆื ืืืจืฅ ืืืื ืืื ืฉืืื ืื ืึพืืื. This makes Davidโs later move to ืืืืจ ืคืืจื even more dramatic.
Davidโs thirst is for ืืณ, not for water, even in the midst of the desert. ืืื is a hapax legomenon that Rashi translates as ืชืืื. The Midrash (ืืจืืฉืืช ืจืื ืกื:ื) connects it to the Aramaic word for mushroom, ืืืื ืืืืืืช ืืืื ืฉืื ืืฆืคืื ืืืื, that suck the moisture out of the very air. The metaphor of the thirst for Torah and word of ืืณ as water helps explain an odd vignette later in ืฉืืืื:

โOnce I rested on ืืฆืืขื, a cushioned bed and thought of You; now I donโt sleep but have to keep watch but still ืืืฉืืจืืช ืืืื ืืโ. We have seen the image of ืืฆืืขื before:

Bad Advice
The Metzudot translates ืืชืขืืฃ as โoppressedโ, as though his spirit is folded in on itself from despair. I would translate ืืืชืขืืฃ ืขืื ืจืืื based on the Midrash, as โwhen I am wrapped up in myselfโ, occupied with my own thoughts, since no one else cares:

Rav Hirsch interprets ืืืื in ืืืื ืืืื ืืจืื in the sense of the English โright-hand manโ. David says look at my right hand, where my allies should be. ืืื ืื ืืืืจ: thereโs no one there who understands me. David had allies: his 600 men. But they didnโt understand him. They were driven by violence and selfishness, as we see again and again. Davidโs real โright-hand manโ was ืืืื, who never met a problem that couldnโt be solved with a well placed knife between the ribs. But that is not Davidโs way; ืืืจืชื ืืชื ืืืกื.

The Dubno Maggid illustrates this verse with a parable: there was an extremely wealthy man who met with misfortune, lost all his money and was forced to beg for his daily bread. Once a generous man gave the beggar a hot lunch in addition to a gift of a penny. The beggar was so overjoyed by this stroke of luck that he ran through the streets and danced for joy. When people realized that a comparative trifle had caused his rejoicing, they grasped how far his fortunes had sunk.
And the last pasuk is Davidโs request; ironically the Midrash would take it literally, to fit with the incident of the ืืืชืจืช:

We previously dealt (in the context of David escaping from Michalโs bedroom) with ืืืชื as a bloodstain, and ืื ืชืฉืืช as a plea that David not be forced to kill. This perek is more explicitly about Davidโs dilemma in dealing with Saul and with his own allies. Rashi sees the double ืื ื ื as reflecting this dilemma:

In the next few pesukim, David echoes the older ืชืืืืื ืฆื, attributed to Moshe, that ืืณ will protect His faithful. David does not need to be violent, since ืืณ will fight his battles:

And I would interpret the ืื ื ืืื that David is ืืชืื not as his enemies chasing him, but his friends, the ืื ืืืฉ ืืจ ื ืคืฉ who made up his gang. They represent a deeper danger; as Malbim says about the pasuk ืื ืืกืื ื ืคืฉื; ืืืฆื ืื ืคืื ืืืกื:

The second half of this perek is a more standard part of ืชืืืืื (note the inclusio of ืจืืื ืขื ืฉืืื)โ, exalting ืืณ and asking that his enemies be caught in their own traps. It is repeated in ืชืืืืื ืงื, in the context of Davidโs later wars (that perek parallels ืชืืืืื ืก,โ ืืืฆืืชื ืืช ืืจื ื ืืจืื).
The emphasis is on having faith that ืืณ is the source of victory (one interpretation of ืืื ืฆื) and Davidโs role is to proclaim ืืณ's glory to the world.
Malbim interprets ื ืืื ืืื ืืืงืื as a reference to Davidโs self control, his acknowledgment that revenge belongs to ืืณ. It is unclear if it is a prayer (โO L-rd, set my heartโ) or a declaration (โO L-rd, my heart is setโ):

ืืืื here is an interesting word, translated as โsoulโ and that is clearly how the word is used elsewhere in ืชื ืดื:

But itโs not part of the usual hierarchy of โsoulโ, ื ืคืฉ-ืจืื-ื ืฉืื-ืืื-ืืืืื. Many reasons are given for associating the โsoulโ with ืืืื, but I like the ืจืืื ื ืืืื. When applied to ืืณ, it means the physical manifestation of the divine (ืืืจื ืืืื ืืณ; look at ืื ืขืื ืืืืจืืชโ-ืฉืืจ ืืืืื), and our ืืืื represents our link to the divine ืืืื:

I think that this is what is meant by ืืืื. It is our ืฆืื ืืืืงืื, something that the ืืืืืื do not have (the word ืฆืื is never applied to them, only ืืืืช;โ ืืืืืดื). And that something is that which makes us uniquely human, our free will:

And that is what David is calling on to awaken: Arise, O my humanity, my ability to choose right from wrong. Itโs time to act, rather than be acted upon. And only then ืขื ืื ืืืจืฅ ืืืืื.
