After Amon humiliates David's messengers, David does nothing. But they can hire mercenaries. Aram had been defeated in פרק ח, but was not completely in David's control. He doesn't go out to war; he just sends Yoav. A year later, the war continues and David's absence becomes more pronounced. In ספר שמואל, this is when the episode of David and Bat Sheva occurs. In דברי הימים, the focus is on the war: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהי לעת תשובת השנה לעת צאת המלכים וינהג יואב את חיל הצבא וישחת את ארץ בני עמון ויבא ויצר את רבה ודויד ישב בירושלם; ויך יואב את רבה ויהרסה׃ <b>ב</b> ויקח דויד את עטרת מלכם מעל ראשו וימצאה משקל ככר זהב ובה אבן יקרה ותהי על ראש דויד; ושלל העיר הוציא הרבה מאד׃ <b>ג</b> ואת העם אשר בה הוציא וישר במגרה ובחריצי הברזל ובמגרות וכן יעשה דויד לכל ערי בני עמון; וישב דויד וכל העם ירושלם׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק כ</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>לעת צאת המלאכים</em>: ופירושו לסוף השנה שהיא תשובת השמש אל הנקודה ההיא וחשבון שנה זו מזמן שיצאו אלה המלכים הנזכרים להלחם. וי״מ לעת צאת העם שדרך המלכים לצאת עם חיילותיהם והיא עת שהקמות בשדות והסוסים מוצאים לאכול. והראשון נכון בעיני.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב יא:א</footer></blockquote> Many מפרשים explain ואת העם אשר בה הוציא וישר במגרה etc. as a description of torture: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וישם במגרה</em>: שם משפטם לייסרם במגרה וגו׳.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב יב:לא</footer></blockquote> But it seems to make more sense in the context of תנ״ך that he enslaved them, as Solomon would later do: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> כל העם הנותר מן האמרי החתי הפרזי החוי והיבוסי אשר לא מבני ישראל המה׃ <b>כא</b> בניהם אשר נתרו אחריהם בארץ אשר לא יכלו בני ישראל להחרימם; ויעלם שלמה למס עבד עד היום הזה׃ <b>כב</b> ומבני ישראל לא נתן שלמה עבד; כי הם אנשי המלחמה ועבדיו ושריו ושלישיו ושרי רכבו ופרשיו׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א פרק ט</footer></blockquote> I'm not going to judge the morality of slavery in the time of תנ״ך. I do want to look at the text of דברי הימים. There's clearly a gap between פסוק א: ודויד ישב בירושלם; ויך יואב את רבה and פסוק ב: ויקח דויד את עטרת מלכם. The author is drawing attention to what the reader must know fits in that gap: the episode of David and Bat Sheva. דברי הימים never criticises David. This is as close as it comes, and the problem is, again, ודויד ישב בירושלם. Let's look at the story as presented in ספר שמואל: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא:א</b> ויהי לתשובת השנה לעת צאת המלאכים וישלח דוד את יואב ואת עבדיו עמו ואת כל ישראל וישחתו את בני עמון ויצרו על רבה; ודוד יושב בירושלם׃</p> <p>...55 פסוקים: סיפור בת שבע</p> <p><b>יב:כו</b> וילחם יואב ברבת בני עמון; וילכד את עיר המלוכה׃ <b>יב:כז</b> וישלח יואב מלאכים אל דוד; ויאמר נלחמתי ברבה גם לכדתי את עיר המים׃ <b>יב:כח</b> ועתה אסף את יתר העם וחנה על העיר ולכדה; פן אלכד אני את העיר ונקרא שמי עליה׃ <b>יב:כט</b> ויאסף דוד את כל העם וילך רבתה; וילחם בה וילכדה׃ <b>יב:ל</b> ויקח את עטרת מלכם מעל ראשו ומשקלה ככר זהב ואבן יקרה ותהי על ראש דוד; ושלל העיר הוציא הרבה מאד׃ <b>יב:לא</b> ואת העם אשר בה הוציא וישם במגרה ובחרצי הברזל ובמגזרת הברזל והעביר אותם במלכן (במלבן) וכן יעשה לכל ערי בני עמון; וישב דוד וכל העם ירושלם׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>In <cite>Chronicles'</cite> account, the very thing that Yoav had sought to avoid seems to have happened--the credit for taking the city was given to him rather than to David.</p> <p>The explanation for <cite>Chronicles'</cite> approach may be as follows: <i lang=he>Rambam</i> (<i lang=he>Melachim</i> 4:10), in discussing the role of the monarchy in the view of the Torah, states: "...the purpose of establishing a king is only in order that he may execute justice and wage war, as it is written: (שמואל א ח:כ) ושפטנו מלכנו ויצא לפנינו ונלחם את מלחמתנו". Although <i lang=he>Rambam</i> does not say so explicitly, it is implied, and borne out by countless stories throughout Scripture, that the duty of conducting wars is a personal one. It seems to require that the king himself go out to battle (see <i lang=he>Rashi</i> to <i lang=he>Joshua</i> 7:10 [אִם תֵּלֵךְ אַתָּה לִפְנֵיהֶם יַצְלִיחוּ, וְאִם לָאו לֹא יַצְלִיחוּ]).</p> <p>[Footnote 1] If this analysis is correct, then our passage in <i lang=he>Chronicles</i> is a sort of Midrash on <i lang=he>Samuel</i>. It takes a section of Scripture and explicates teachings which are implicit in the text, in much the same was that the Sages of the Talmud did in later centuries.</p> <p>We could imagine the same Midrash in Talmudic language as reading approximately: G-d said to David, "Do you sit in comfort in Jerusalem while My children are in the field of battle? By your life, their victory will not be ascribed to you".</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Moshe Eisemann, <cite>Divrei Hayamim I</cite>, pp. 269-270</footer></blockquote> <hr/> So why does David not go out? Rav Eisemann hypothesizes: <blockquote lang=en><p>From all that we have now learned, it seems quite obvious why Dovid felt that it would be inappropriate to take part in the battle for Ammon...Dovid must have realized that but for his ill-conceived idea to send the delegation for Chonun, none of this suffering need have happened. Weighed down by his guilt, he felt that he had best not be involved in the fighting.</p> <footer class="source">Rabbi Moshe M. Eisemann, <a href="http://www.diggingdeeperjewish.org/kishinievbookdetail/music.htm"><cite>Music Made in Heaven</cite></a>, p. 75</footer></blockquote> I would disagree. We know that David *did* lead the battle against Aram as part of this very war. It's only against Amon that he stays behind. I think it goes back to his original delegation to Amon: (שמואל ב י:ב) ויאמר דוד אעשה חסד עם חנון בן נחש כאשר עשה אביו עמדי חסד. He had a personal connection to Amon, and a personal reason to express gratitude. We see this with Moshe: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אמר אל אהרן</em>: לְפִי שֶׁהֵגֵן הַיְאוֹר עַל מֹשֶׁה כְּשֶׁנִּשְׁלַךְ לְתוֹכוֹ, לְפִיכָךְ לֹא לָקָה עַל יָדוֹ לֹא בַדָּם וְלֹא בַצְפַרְדְּעִים, וְלָקָה עַל יְדֵי אַהֲרֹן.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות ז:יט</footer></blockquote> But that is wrong. David is not an individual, with individual responsibilities. As מלך ישראל he represents כנסת ישראל. If war is appropriate, he needs to lead it. If he can't go out to fight, he cannot send the people to fight. <blockquote lang=he><p>על הסרת ליבו הקפידה תורה, שנאמר (דברים יז:יז) וְלֹא יָסוּר לְבָבוֹ--<em>שליבו הוא לב כל קהל ישראל</em>.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות פרק ג:ו</footer></blockquote> But it's clear that the army noted David's absence. Uriah makes a biting comment when David tries to get him to go home: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר אוריה אל דוד הארון וישראל ויהודה ישבים בסכות ואדני יואב ועבדי אדני על פני השדה חנים ואני אבוא אל ביתי לאכל ולשתות ולשכב עם אשתי; חיך וחי נפשך אם אעשה את הדבר הזה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב יא:יא </footer></blockquote> I think the problem that דברי הימים is hinting at, by pointedly *not* mentioning בת שבע, is that David is trying to be עשה משפט וצדקה but is still making everything about *him* rather than about the people. If he is to be a מלך ישראל, then he doesn't get a personal life or the moral choices that an individual makes. He needs to sacrifice himself as an individual to be the leader of a people. And I would argue that this mistake is what leads to that fateful night with בת שבע.
