But there's another idea here about the nature of תאוה, desire. תקות רשעים עברה doesn't necessarily mean that the רשע *wants* anger; they want good for themselves as well as the צדיק does. But we've mentioned René Girard before, and his idea that we are social primates, so our desires are formed by what we observe others desiring. And that leads to conflict. >[René] Girard’s fundamental concept is ‘mimetic desire’. Ever since Plato, students of human nature have highlighted the great mimetic capacity of human beings; that is, we are the species most apt at imitation. Indeed, imitation is the basic mechanism of learning (we learn inasmuch as we imitate what our teachers do)... > However, according to Girard, most thinking devoted to imitation pays little attention to the fact that we also imitate other people’s desires, and depending on how this happens, it may lead to conflicts and rivalries. If people imitate each other’s desires, they may wind up desiring the very same things; and if they desire the same things, they may easily become rivals, as they reach for the same objects... > In Girard’s psychology, [mimetic] desire eventually lead[s] to rivalry and violence. Imitation eventually erases the differences among human beings, and inasmuch as people become similar to each other, they desire the same things, which leads to rivalries and a Hobbesian war of all against all. These rivalries soon bear the potential to threaten the very existence of communities. Thus, Girard asks: how is it possible for communities to overcome their internal strife? > Girard believes that, paradoxically, the problem of violence is frequently solved with a lesser dose of violence. When mimetic rivalries accumulate, tensions grow ever greater. But, that tension eventually reaches a paroxysm. When violence is at the point of threatening the existence of the community, very frequently a bizarre psychosocial mechanism arises: communal violence is all of the sudden projected upon a single individual. Thus, people that were formerly struggling, now unite efforts against someone chosen as a scapegoat. It's not so much wanting what others *have* (that's חמדה, as in לא תחמוד); it's wanting what others *want*. Then it will be אך טוב, lead to good. {:he} >קנאת סופרים תרבה חכמה. --בבא בתרא כב,א While the רשע also has the תאוה but makes it a תקוה, leading to conflict. תקות רשעים עברה. ---- Shlomo then turns to צדקה. {:he} > יש מפזר ונוסף עוד; וחשֵׂך מישר אך למחסור׃ --משלי יא:כד He says the same thing in קוהלת: {:he} ><b>א</b> שלח לחמך על פני המים; כי ברב הימים תמצאנו׃ <b>ב</b> תן חלק לשבעה וגם לשמונה; כי לא תדע מה יהיה רעה על הארץ׃ --קוהלת פרק יא And the point is that יש מפזר, there are those who scatter and profit; there are also those who do not profit from their generosity. There is a golden mean, the שביל הזהב in Rambam's terms. {:he} > ולא יקפץ ידו ביותר, ולא יפזר ממונו אלא נותן צדקה כפי מסת ידו ומלוה כראוי למי שצריך. --משנה תורה, הלכות דעות א:ד {:he} >א"ר אילעא: באושא התקינו, המבזבז, אל יבזבז יותר מחומש. תניא נמי הכי: המבזבז , אל יבזבז יותר מחומש, שמא יצטרך לבריות. --כתובות נ,א {:he} ><em>יש מפזר ונוסף עוד וחשך מיושר אך למחסור</em>: כבר בארו החכמים שטוב לאדם לבחור הדרך הממוצע, והנה הנדיבות הוא הדרך הממוצע בין הפזרנות והכילות ששניהם לא טובים, וכמ"ש המבזבז אל יבזבז יותר מחומש, ולפי סברת העולם, הנוטה לא' מן הקצוות טוב יותר הנוטה אל הכילות מן הנוטה אל הפזרנות, כי זה יאבד מהונו וזה עכ"פ ישמור את ממונו ולא יאבדנו. אומר החכם בהפך, כי המפזר לא תמיד מאבד ממונו, שלפעמים ע"י הפזור יתוסף ממונו, שעי"כ יגדל שמו בין עשירי ארץ, וכולם ילוו לו ויהיה נאמן אצלם ועי"כ יגדל כבוד עשרו, עד שיש לפעמים מפזר ונוסף עוד, אבל החשך מיושר ע"י הכילות הוא תמיד אך מחסר, כי ע"י הכילות וצרת עינו יברחו בני אדם ממנו ויכלה ממונו באין נושא ונותן עמו, ואם מצד ענשי ה׳. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:כד He continues in the same vein: {:he .lines} ><b>כה</b> נפש ברכה תדשן; ומרוה גם הוא יורא׃ <b>כו</b> מנע בר יקבהו לאום; וברכה לראש משביר׃ <b>כז</b> שחר טוב יבקש רצון; ודרש רעה תבואנו׃ <b>כח</b> בוטח בעשרו הוא יפול; וכעלה צדיקים יפרחו׃ --משלי פרק יא Yes, you need to stick to the דרך הממוצע, but most people need reminding to be *more* generous, not less. Note that Shlomo is appealing to selfishness to encourage generosity: you can do well by doing good. He's not saying here to be good because ה׳ wants it, but that's OK (נזיר כג,ב)‎: מתוך שלא לשמה בה לשמה. The אורחות צדיקים adds that there is a spiritual profit as well: {:he} >ודע שהמתנה במקום שהיא ראויה, כגון צדקה לעניים יראי שמים--אותה המתנה היא מטמון ספון שאינה נאבדת באריכות הימים, אך היא עומדת כל הימים. וזו היא כונת שלמה המלך עליו השלום, שאמר: שַׁלַּח לַחְמְךָ עַל פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם, כִּי בְרֹב הַיָּמִים תִּמְצָאֶנּוּ. ופשט הפסוק דבר על הנדיבות, כי מי שזורע חסד--קוצר תבואתו. ומי שיש בו המדה הזאת הוא מתעשר, כמו שנאמר יֵשׁ מְפַזֵּר וְנוֹסָף עוֹד; עוד כתיב (משלי כח:כז): נוֹתֵן לָרָשׁ אֵין מַחְסוֹר. ואמר דוד על האנשים הנדיבים (תהלים קיב:ט): פִּזַּר נָתַן לָאֶבְיוֹנִים--צִדְקָתוֹ עֹמֶדֶת לָעַד. --אורחות צדיקים יז:ה I find the אורחות צדיקים to be a fascinating sefer because of its history. It first appeared in the 15th century. >/Orechos Tzadikim/ is an anonymous mussar sefer that has enjoyed a lasting impact on Judaism. It is surprising that the sefer was never attributed to anyone. Publishers and men of letters usually guess at the author’s name of an anonymous sefer, even if they are wrong... > /Orechos Tzadikim/ draws heavily on earlier sources, often quoting them verbatim. While today this would be considered plagiarism, in those times of hand-copied manuscripts, the standards of attribution were different. (Scholars trace the origin of the constantly evolving sense of authorial ownership to the eighteenth century.)... > What we can state with certainty is that the author lived in or after the early 14th century. Despite being influenced by the German /Chasidim/, he was a follower of the French /Ba’alei Ha-Tosafos/.
