David has just gotten the news that his army has won, but no one will tell him explicitly what happened to Avshalom. All he knows is what the כושי told him (שמואל ב יח:לב):‎ יהיו כנער איבי אדני המלך. But he realizes what they meant: {:he} > וירגז המלך ויעל על עלית השער ויבך; וכה אמר בלכתו בני אבשלום בני בני אבשלום מי יתן מותי אני תחתיך אבשלום בני בני׃ --שמואל ב יט:א The gemara describes David's thinking: {:he} >תנא דבי רבי ישמעאל: באותה שעה נבקע שאול מתחתיו. ”וירגז המלך ויעל על עליית השער ויבך וכה אמר בלכתו בני אבשלום בני בני [אבשלום] מי יתן מותי אני תחתיך אבשלום בני בני והמלך לאט את פניו ויזעק המלך קול גדול בני אבשלום אבשלום בני בני“. הני תמניא בני למה? שבעה דאסקיה משבעה מדורי גיהנם. ואידך? איכא דאמרי דקריב רישיה לגבי גופיה, ואיכא דאמרי דאייתיה לעלמא דאתי. --סוטה י,ב I think the gemara is making an intentional allusion to another moment of discovery, when a father realizes his beloved son is doomed: {:he} >ויחרד יצחק חרדה גדלה עד מאד ויאמר מי אפוא הוא הצד ציד ויבא לי ואכל מכל בטרם תבוא ואברכהו; גם ברוך יהיה׃ --בראשית כז:לג {:he} ><em>ויחרד</em>:...ומדרשו ראה גיהנם פתוחה מתחתיו. --רש״י, שם {:he} ><em>שראה גיהנם פתוחה תחתיו</em>: רוצה לומר תחת עשו. --גור אריה, שם At this moment, David sees the pit of Hell open under Avshalom. There is no bringing him back. Whatever vision David had for him is gone forever. David has composed some poetic elegies in his time: {:he} ><b>יז</b> ויקנן דוד את הקינה הזאת על שאול ועל יהונתן בנו׃...<b>כב</b> מדם חללים מחלב גבורים קשת יהונתן לא נשוג אחור; וחרב שאול לא תשוב ריקם׃ <b>כג</b> שאול ויהונתן הנאהבים והנעימם בחייהם ובמותם לא נפרדו; מנשרים קלו מאריות גברו׃...<b>כו</b> צר לי עליך אחי יהונתן נעמת לי מאד; נפלאתה אהבתך לי מאהבת נשים׃ <b>כז</b> איך נפלו גבורים ויאבדו כלי מלחמה׃ --שמואל ב פרק א {:he} ><b>לג</b> ויקנן המלך אל אבנר ויאמר; הכמות נבל ימות אבנר׃ <b>לד</b> ידך לא אסרות ורגליך לא לנחשתים הגשו כנפול לפני בני עולה נפלת; ויספו כל העם לבכות עליו׃ --שמואל ב פרק ג It's striking how *undramatic* this "קינה" is. I think the answer is related to a comment in the midrash: {:he} >כתיב (תהלים עט:א) מִזְמוֹר לְאָסָף: אֱלֹקִים בָּאוּ גוֹיִם בְּנַחֲלָתֶךָ [טִמְּאוּ אֶת הֵיכַל קָדְשֶׁךָ; שָׂמוּ אֶת יְרוּשָׁלִַם לְעִיִּים], לא הוה קרא צריך למימר אלא ”בכי לאסף“, ”נהי לאסף“ ”קינה לאסף“! ומה אומר מזמור לאסף? --איכה רבה (וילנא) ד:יד But here it is the reverse: לא הוה קרא צריך למימר אלא ”מזמור לדוד“ ! Fundamentally, Achimatz is right. The outcome of the battle was a בשורה, good news. ה׳ *did* fight for David, performing miracles (ניסים נסתרים but ניסים nonetheless). David should have been singing שירה over his salvation. He can't compose a קינה because he has no divine inspiration. As [Rav Elchanan Samet says](https://www.hatanakh.com/lessons/%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%AA-%D7%90%D7%91%D7%A9%D7%9C%D7%95%D7%9D-%D7%99%D7%95%D7%90%D7%91-%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%9C-%D7%93%D7%95%D7%93) (in the 2013 ימי עיון בתנך), his people put their lives on the line for him, and all they hear is a lament over their enemy, especially David's line about מי יתן מותי אני תחתיך. {:he} >ויאמר העם לא תצא כי אם נס ננוס לא ישימו אלינו לב ואם ימתו חצינו לא ישימו אלינו לב כי עתה כמנו עשרה אלפים; ועתה טוב כי תהיה לנו מעיר לעזיר (לעזור)׃ --שמואל ב יח:ג They declare that their lives are less important than David's, and David declares that his life is less important that Avshalom's. The implication is that David would rather they all would have died, and Avshalom would still be alive. And the text implies that Yoav was right in this case, to kill Avshalom against David's command: {:he} ><b>טו</b> ויסבו עשרה נערים נשאי כלי יואב; ויכו את אבשלום וימתהו׃ <b>טז</b> ויתקע יואב בשפר וישב העם מרדף אחרי ישראל; כי חשך יואב את העם׃ --שמואל ב פרק יח David is acting like a father, not like a king. At that is unforgiveable. Love is the death of duty. The story of Avshalom and David's reaction is an object lesson in the price a מלך must pay. ---- So David pulls himself back together. {:he} > ויקם המלך וישב בשער; ולכל העם הגידו לאמר הנה המלך יושב בשער ויבא כל העם לפני המלך וישראל נס איש לאהליו׃ --שמואל ב יט:ט Yoav insisted that David קום צא ודבר על לב עבדיך. David only does the צא part; he doesn't talk to them. And so this civil war ends on an ambiguous note, right back at the phrase we saw in the previous perek: {:he} >ויקחו את אבשלום וישלכו אתו ביער אל הפחת הגדול ויצבו עליו גל אבנים גדול מאד; וכל ישראל נסו איש לאהלו׃ --שמואל ב יח:יז There's a lot of healing that has yet to happen.
