The actual halacha never applied, but just like Avshalom, it is a source of lessons for the future: <blockquote lang=he><p>דתניא: בן סורר ומורה לא היה ולא עתיד להיות ולמה נכתב? <em>דרוש וקבל שכר</em>.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין עא,א</footer></blockquote> However, ר׳ יונתן objects that the halacha *did* apply: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר ר׳ יונתן: אני ראיתיו וישבתי על קברו.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין עא,א</footer></blockquote> <a href="http://www.torahleadership.org/categories/reeh2016.pdf">Rabbi Aryeh Klapper</a> points out many problems with ר׳ יונתן’s comment. First, <a href="https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A8%D7%91%D7%99_%D7%99%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%AA%D7%9F">ר׳ יונתן</a> was a כהן, and should not have been anywhere near a grave. Second, he was an second-century CE tanna, who lived a century after the Sanhedrin could judge capital cases. So he could not have seen an actual case of בן סורר ומורה being tried. Third, there is a halacha forbidding anyone from sitting on a grave. It is a symbol of his rebellion, and a source of a lesson about how to not raise children. And that is why מעשה אבשלום נקרא ומתרגם. What was the problem with David's relationship with Avshalom? David is clearly not denying Avshalom anything; he has מרכבה וססים וחמשים איש רצים לפניו. His brother Adoniya will later do the same thing: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואדניה בן חגית מתנשא לאמר אני אמלך; ויעש לו רכב ופרשים וחמשים איש רצים לפניו׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א א:ה</footer></blockquote> It is a symbol of royalty: <blockquote lang=he><p> ויאמר זה יהיה משפט המלך אשר ימלך עליכם; את בניכם יקח ושם לו במרכבתו ובפרשיו ורצו לפני מרכבתו׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל א ח:יא</footer></blockquote> However, David will not name Avshalom as his successor; he [David] knows that. <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>ז</b> ויאמר דויד לשלמה; בנו (בני) אני היה עם לבבי לבנות בית לשם ה׳ אלקי׃ <b>ח</b> ויהי עלי דבר ה׳ לאמר דם לרב שפכת ומלחמות גדלות עשית; לא תבנה בית לשמי כי דמים רבים שפכת ארצה לפני׃ <b>ט</b> הנה בן נולד לך הוא יהיה איש מנוחה והניחותי לו מכל אויביו מסביב; <em>כי שלמה יהיה שמו ושלום ושקט אתן על ישראל בימיו</em>׃ <b>י</b> הוא יבנה בית לשמי והוא יהיה לי לבן ואני לו לאב; והכינותי כסא מלכותו על ישראל עד עולם׃ <b>יא</b> עתה בני יהי ה׳ עמך; והצלחת ובנית בית ה׳ אלקיך כאשר דבר עליך׃</p> <footer class="source">דברי הימים א פרק כב</footer></blockquote> But he won't explicitly tell his other sons that until the end of his life. He will refuse to be a מלך. Of course, he will still be the ruler. He wants to be Lord Protector of Israel. <blockquote lang=en><p>After the execution of Charles [King Charles I], England was ruled by a small group of MPs called 'the Rump'. After three years, they had still not agreed to call a new Parliament and therefore England was still ruled without one. In April 1653, [Oliver] Cromwell and 40 musketeers, soldiers armed with guns, marched into the Rump Parliament and closed it down.</p> <p>At first, Cromwell tried calling what was known as the 'Barebones Parliament', and also the 'Parliament of Saints', but it was dissolved as some of its members were seen as too radical. In December 1653, the army declared Cromwell 'Lord Protector', and gave him almost the powers of a king in 1657.</p> <p>...Cromwell dismissed both his Parliaments, which he regarded as too radical. He refused a petition to make himself king...He set up a system of 'Major-Generals', who ran the country as a military dictatorship until 1657.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/z8vdmp3/revision/4">BBC Bitesize, <cite>Oliver Cromwell</cite></a></footer></blockquote> And then Avshalom cements his popularity by refusing the honor due a king. He is not the vain elitist (כאבשלום לא היה איש יפה בכל ישראל להלל מאד) that everyone thought; he treats everyone as an equal: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> והיה בקרב איש להשתחות לו; ושלח את ידו והחזיק לו ונשק לו׃ <b>ו</b> ויעש אבשלום כדבר הזה לכל ישראל אשר יבאו למשפט אל המלך; ויגנב אבשלום את לב אנשי ישראל׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק טו</footer></blockquote> The irony, of course, is that is not David, but Avshalom, who is imposing משפט המלך:‎ ויעש לו אבשלום מרכבה וססים; וחמשים איש רצים לפניו. It is David who comes closest to the ideal leader: (שמואל ב ח:טו)‎ וימלך דוד על כל ישראל; ויהי דוד עשה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו.
