This week's parsha starts with Avraham's famous הכנסת אורחים: {:he} ><b>א</b> וירא אליו ה׳ באלני ממרא; והוא ישב פתח האהל כחם היום׃ <b>ב</b> וישא עיניו וירא והנה שלשה אנשים נצבים עליו; וירא וירץ לקראתם מפתח האהל וישתחו ארצה׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר; אֲדֹנָ־י אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך אל נא תעבר מעל עבדך׃ --בראשית פרק יח But it starts with וירא אליו ה׳. What was that? Rambam says it is the introduction to the narrative that follows: {:he} >כבר בארנו, כי כל מקום שנזכרה בו ראית ”מלאך“ או דבורו, שזה אמנם הוא במראה הנבואה או בחלום--יבואר בהם או לא יבואר...”וירא אליו יי באלוני ממרא וגו׳“: כי כאשר הקדים כלל--והוא שהאלו־ה נראה אליו--התחיל לבאר איך היתה צורת ההראות ההוא ואמר שתחילה ראה ”שלשה אנשים“... --מורה נבוכים ב:מב Rashi says that it wasn't a prophetic message, just a friendly visit. {:he} ><em>וירא אליו</em>: לבקר את החולה. אמר רבי חמא בר חנינא, יום שלישי למילתו היה, ובא הקב"ה ושאל בשלומו. --רש"י, בראשית יח:א But it seems that there *was* a message that ה׳ intended to give to Avraham, one that comes up after Avraham bids goodbye to his guests. Note that it starts with וה׳ אמר, in the past perfect, "ה׳ had said [to Himself]": {:he} ><b>טז</b> ויקמו משם האנשים וישקפו על פני סדם; ואברהם הלך עמם לשלחם׃ <b>יז</b> וה׳ אמר; המכסה אני מאברהם אשר אני עשה׃ <b>יח</b> ואברהם היו יהיה לגוי גדול ועצום; ונברכו בו כל גויי הארץ׃ <b>יט</b> כי ידעתיו למען אשר יצוה את בניו ואת ביתו אחריו ושמרו דרך ה׳ לעשות צדקה ומשפט למען הביא ה׳ על אברהם את אשר דבר עליו׃ <b>כ</b> ויאמר ה׳ זעקת סדם ועמרה כי רבה; וחטאתם כי כבדה מאד׃ --בראשית פרק יח In other words, read אֲדֹנָ־י אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך אל נא תעבר מעל עבדך as Avraham putting ה׳ on hold. And that is exactly how the gemara reads this story. {:he} > אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: גדולה הכנסת אורחין מהקבלת פני שכינה, דכתיב: ”ויאמַר: ה׳, אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך אל נא תעבר וגו׳“. --שבת קכז,א ---- This past week we had a יום עיון that included Rabbi Shalom Rosner, and I got a chance to look at his book of דברי תורה called _Shalom Rav_. He asks about this narrative: >We learn of the great significance of the mitzva of /hakhnasat orhim/ (welcoming guests) from Avraham, but how did Avraham know that he was permitted to leave G-d's presence in order to fulfill this mitzva? Imagine standing before a king and suddenly ignoring the king's presence to engage in conversation with another individual. It is most disrespectful. --Rabbi Shalom Rosner, [_Shalom Rav_](https://oupress.org/product/shalom-rav/), p. 63, _Guests Come First_ He brings two answers, for which I unfortunately do not have the primary sources, so I will have to take his word for it. He first cites Rabbi J. J. Shachter, who notes that נביאים in תנ״ך (except for Moshe) experience their נבואה in a trance: {:he} > <b>ו</b> ויאמר שמעו נא דברי; אם יהיה נביאכם ה׳ במראה אליו אתודע בחלום אדבר בו׃ <b>ז</b> לא כן עבדי משה; בכל ביתי נאמן הוא׃ <b>ח</b> פה אל פה אדבר בו ומראה ולא בחידת ותמנת ה׳ יביט; ומדוע לא יראתם לדבר בעבדי במשה׃ --במדבר פרק יב {:he} >נבואת משה רבינו ע"ה נבדלת מנבואת כל הנביאים בארבעה דברים...והענין השני כי כל נביא לא תבא לו הנבואה אלא כשהוא ישן כמו שאמר במקומות בחלום הלילה בחזיון לילה ורבים מענין זה או ביום אחר שתפול תרדמה על האדם בענין שנתבטלו ממנו כל הרגשותיו ונשאר מחשבתו פנויה כענין חלום וענין זה נקרא מחזה ומראה ועליו נאמר במראות אלקים ומשה יבא אליו הדבור ביום והוא עומד בין שני הכרובים... --רמב״ם, פירוש המשנה, סנהדרין י:א (הקדמה לפרק חלק), היסוד השביעי >How did [Avraham] see the guests if he was in a trance or sleeping? Didn't he lose all of his faculties? It must be that this time was an exception. Usually, he was in a trance while speaking with Hashem, but this time he wasn't, or at least not to the extent that he was unable to see his guests. > Avraham realized this phenomenon and thought, "Why do I see these guests? Why is Hashem giving me the ability to see them while He is speaking with me? It must be that He wants me to see them and care for them". --Rabbi Shalom Rosner, [_Shalom Rav_](https://oupress.org/product/shalom-rav/), p. 64, _Guests Come First_ The text says וישא עיניו *וירא* והנה שלשה אנשים נצבים עליו; *וירא*. The first וירא means "he saw"; the second means "he understood"; he realized that ה׳ was giving him permission to leave to pursue his guests. ---- >Another approach to the same question is offered by Rav [Shlomo] Wolbe [[ שיעורי חומש](https://www.nli.org.il/he/books/NNL_ALEPH990026350520205171/NLI), p.138]. --Rabbi Shalom Rosner, [_Shalom Rav_](https://oupress.org/product/shalom-rav/), p. 64, _Guests Come First_ Rav Wolbe says that the question, "How could Avraham interrupt his communion with הקב״ה in order to do הכנסת אורחים" misses the whole point of מצוות. Being a נביא, in contact with "the mind of G-d", is the highest state that a human being can aspire to: {:he} >דע, כי אמיתת הנבואה ומהותה הוא שפע שופע מאת האלו־ה ית׳ וית׳ באמצעות השכל הפועל...וזאת היא היותר עליונה שבמדרגות האדם ותכלית השלמות אשר אפשר שימצא למינו. --מורה נבוכים ב:קל And it the ultimate reward in עולם הבא: {:he} >מרגלא בפומיה דרב: לא כעולם הזה העולם הבא. העולם הבא אין בו לא אכילה ולא שתיה ולא פריה ורביה ולא משא ומתן ולא קנאה ולא שנאה ולא תחרות, אלא צדיקים יושבין ועטרותיהם בראשיהם ונהנים מזיו השכינה. --ברכות יז,א But נהנים מזיו השכינה is the *reward*; it does not represent our *responsibility*. {:he} >יפה שעה אחת בתשובה ומעשים טובים בעולם הזה, מכל חיי העולם הבא. --משנה אבות ד:יז >Rav Wolbe suggests the following. What is our goal in life? What is our purpose? Not to bask in the glory of Hashem, but rather to be an /oved Hashem/, servant of Hashem. If I am a good /eved/, servant, then I will be worthy of being close to the /Shekhina/ in the next world. It is important that we set appropriate priorities in this world. --Rabbi Shalom Rosner, [_Shalom Rav_](https://oupress.org/product/shalom-rav/), p. 65, _Guests Come First_ >R. Wolbe [in המצוות השקולות] introduces us to a whole new world of what he calls עֲרָכִים...which we might translate as "values": things like democracy, health, food, music, sports, visiting the sick, and myriads more, that we regard as significant aspects of our lives. He postulates that every person has an ערך עליון, *a highest value*, to which all his other ערכים are subordinate. In Judaism, that ערך עליון would be the /Ribbono shel Olam/. > [Any other value], says Rav Wolbe, would in Avraham Avinu's lexicon be considered /avodah zarah/... > [Footnote: Rav Wolbe lists חכמה among the relative ערכים that might, if we are not careful, compete for the position of ערך עליון. If I understand him correctly, he means to include even Torah learning, if that is allowed to become an end in itself, divorced from the /Ribbono shel Olam/]. --Rav Moshe Eisemann, [_Shiras Ha’azinu_](https://www.rabbieisemann.com/product/shiras-haazinu/), pp. 154-156 Avraham understood that there was no מצווה inherent in וירא אליו ה׳. When he saw שלשה אנשים נצבים עליו, he knew he had a job to do. ---- Now, we're not נביאים. But the lesson is relevant to us. We have also been given the privilege of basking in the glory of Hashem; that is the מצווה of תלמוד תורה. >What, then, makes the Torah, as the psalmist says, “sweeter than honeycombs”? The answer lies in the joy of discovering G-d’s mind... > The Torah was given as an invitation into the infinite expanses and depths of His mind, precisely because G-d refuses to present Himself in finite form. The Torah is not G-d incarnate; it is not a finite embodiment of G-d; it is a bridge to divine infinity. G-d does not make Himself finite through the Torah; He gives finite, fallible human beings the means to commune with His infinite mind. --Meir Soloveitchik, [_Torah and Incarnation_](https://www.firstthings.com/article/2010/10/torah-and-incarnation) But however (תהילים יט:יא)‎ מתוקים מדבש learning is, it can't become our ultimate goal. {:he} >דאמר רב הונא: כל העוסק בתורה בלבד דומה כמי שאין לו אלו־ה שנאמר (דברי הימים ב טו:ג) וְיָמִים רַבִּים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל לְלֹא  אֱלֹקֵי אֱמֶת. מאי ”ללא אלקי אמת“? שכל העוסק בתורה בלבד דומה כמי שאין לו אלו־ה ובגמילות חסדים לא עסק. --עבודה זרה יז,ב {:he} >מבטלין תלמוד תורה להוצאת המת ולהכנסת הכלה. אמרו עליו על רבי יהודה ברבי אילעאי שהיה מבטל תלמוד תורה להוצאת המת ולהכנסת הכלה. במה דברים אמורים? בשאין שם כל צורכו, אבל יש שם כל צורכו, אין מבטלין. וכמה כל צורכו? אמר רב שמואל בר איניא משמיה דרב: תריסר אלפי גברי, ושיתא אלפי שיפורי. --מגילה כט,א >Avraham recognized that when faced with a choice of doing an act of /hesed/ by serving as an /eved Hashem/ or remaining in the presence of Hashem, the former was the proper choice. --Rabbi Shalom Rosner, [_Shalom Rav_](https://oupress.org/product/shalom-rav/), p. 65, _Guests Come First_ And that is the meaning of גדולה הכנסת אורחין מהקבלת פני שכינה for us.
