I really like that particular קדושת לוי because of this (unrelated to the theme of this shiur) profound point:
The parsha starts with ה׳ telling Moshe to ask the people for donations:
The midrash notes that “דבר אל בני ישראל” stands by itself, not followed by a “לאמור” or any command. Moshe is told simply to speak to the people, and they will give.
The Baal HaTurim explains that the donations have to be voluntary. There cannot be a command to donate, and Moshe can’t go and take from the people (they have been oppressed and robbed enough already—האומות…נוטלים ממונם על כרחן). Talk gently to them, and they will give.
But Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev puts a chassidic twist on that. He points out that the goal of the donations was to build a משכן, and the goal of the משכן was to bring the שכינה into each member of בני ישראל.
As the famous piyut of Rav Hutner says,
And he notes that the commandment to build the משכן was a response to the sin of the עגל הזהב. The לשון פיוס that ה׳ wants Moshe to use is the reconciliation between בני ישראל and ה׳. Moshe didn’t want to spend the time to just דבר אל בני ישראל, just to talk to them. A צדיק doesn’t waste their time shmoozing.
That’s the לשון פיוס: Just talk to them and יקחו לי תרומה.
That is an important lesson about avoiding elitism and about never giving in to despair.
But the קדושת לוי goes further. There’s a famous question about this week’s parsha:
The קדושת לוי says that the reason that every form of מקדש is different is because the מקדש is built ככל אשר אני מראה אותך, and every נביא is different.
And the way I read the קדושת לוי is that at the homiletical level, this goes back to the first pasuk of דבר אל בני ישראל. Every individual has to build the משכן: בלבבי משכן אבנה. Your job, Moshe is not to dictate to each member of בני ישראל how to do that. Your job is דבר אל בני ישראל, speak to them בלשון פיוס, and then יקחו לי תרומה, they will be inspired and exalted, and then וכן תעשו, they will use the guidance you give and the tools and materials that they individually bring, to create their own place in the world for הקב״ה; ועשו לי מקדש; ושכנתי בתוכם.
