This week is the longest parsha of the year, but most of it is just repetition, 12 copies of the inaugural gifts of each of the נשיאים. Each one was identical, but the Torah feels it necessary to repeat the same 6 psukim 12 times. {:he} ><b>סו</b> ביום העשירי נשיא לבני דן אחיעזר בן עמישדי׃ <b>סז</b> קרבנו קערת כסף אחת שלשים ומאה משקלה מזרק אחד כסף שבעים שקל בשקל הקדש; שניהם מלאים סלת בלולה בשמן למנחה׃...<b>עא</b> ולזבח השלמים בקר שנים אילם חמשה עתדים חמשה כבשים בני שנה חמשה; זה קרבן אחיעזר בן עמישדי׃ --במדבר פרק ז The usual explanation is that, while the *items* were identical, each נשיא had his own individual symbolic meaning for the items, and the Torah wanted to emphasize that each was legitimate. {:he} >הנה כל אחד מהם הקריב כל מיני הקרבנות...לחנך המזבח ומשרתיו בכל מיני הקרבנות...וספר קרבן כל אחד מהם לבדו להורות שכל אחד מהם כיון לכפר על פרטי חטאים שירבו בשבטו וזה בכל אחד מפרטי קרבנו לרצון להם לפני ה'. --ספורנו, במדבר ז:יג במדבר רבה goes into excruciating detail about these offerings, giving midrashic explanations of every detail, as it applies to that particular tribe. It makes the volume for פרשת נשא alone as long as any other of the volumes for complete ספרים. Each one is based on the ברכה that Yaakov gave that son, which midrashically determined the literary character of that tribe's destiny. I want to look at the offering from נשיא דן, since it connects to the rest of the parsha. {:he} >בַּיּוֹם הָעֲשִׂירִי נָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי דָן אֲחִיעֶזֶר בֶּן עַמִּישַׁדָּי, הֲרֵי נוֹתְרוּ שְׁלשָׁה שְׁבָטִים, דָּן וְאָשֵׁר וְנַפְתָּלִי, מָה רָאָה דָן לְהַקְרִיב תְּחִלָּה לָהֶם, לְפִי שֶׁאָבִיו הִקִּישׁוֹ לִיהוּדָה, כְּמָה דְּתֵימָא (בראשית מט, טז): דָּן יָדִין עַמּוֹ כְּאַחַד שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּמְיֻחָד שֶׁבַּשְּׁבָטִים, זֶה יְהוּדָה, לְפִיכָךְ הָיָה רֹאשׁ לְאֵלּוּ שֶׁנִּשְׁאֲרוּ, כְּשֵׁם שֶׁיְּהוּדָה הָיָה רֹאשׁ לְכֻלָּם. --במדבר רבה יד:ט דן was one of the four leading tribes that formed the organization of the camp in the wilderness. {:he} ><b>כה</b> דגל מחנה דן צפנה לצבאתם; ונשיא לבני דן אחיעזר בן עמישדי׃...<b>כז</b> והחנים עליו מטה אשר; ונשיא לבני אשר פגעיאל בן עכרן׃...<b>כט</b> ומטה נפתלי; ונשיא לבני נפתלי אחירע בן עינן׃...<b>לא</b> כל הפקדים למחנה דן מאת אלף ושבעה וחמשים אלף ושש מאות; לאחרנה יסעו לדגליהם׃ --במדבר פרק ב Yaakov's ברכה to דן had two parts; the first calling him כאחד שבטי ישראל and the second comparing him to a snake (not the most flattering comparison): {:he} ><b>טז</b> דן ידין עמו כאחד שבטי ישראל׃ <b>יז</b> יהי דן נחש עלי דרך שפיפן עלי ארח הנשך עקבי סוס ויפל רכבו אחור׃ --בראשית פרק מט With that introduction, the Midrash goes through the offering. The references are all to דן's most famous son, שמשון, and his נזירות (which is the connection to the earlier parts of the parsha. And it goes back and forth, between שמשון and the laws of נזיר in general: {:he} >הֲרֵי זֶה הִקְרִיב קָרְבָּנוֹ כְּנֶגֶד שִׁמְשׁוֹן, לְפִי שֶׁבִּרְכַּת יַעֲקֹב לְדָן לֹא הָיְתָה אֶלָּא עַל שֵׁם שִׁמְשׁוֹן, וְגַם גְּבוּרַת שִׁמְשׁוֹן לֹא הָיְתָה תְּלוּיָה אֶלָּא בִּנְזִירוּתוֹ, לְכָךְ הִקְרִיב נְשִׂיא דָן עַל הַסֵּדֶר הַזֶּה, הֲדָא הוּא דִּכְתִיב: ”קָרְבָּנוֹ קַעֲרַת כֶּסֶף“, זֶה הָיָה נְזִיר טָהֳרָה, וּלְכָךְ קָרָא לוֹ קְעָרָה, שֶׁהוּא הָיָה מֵבִיא לֶחֶם [פירוש מהרז״ו: כמפורש במדבר ו: ”וסל מצות ורקיקי מצות“ וקערה רומז ללחם]. ”שְׁלשִׁים וּמֵאָה מִשְׁקָלָהּ“, מִן (במדבר ו:יג): ”וְזֹאת תּוֹרַת הַנָּזִיר“ עַד (במדבר ו:כ): ”וְאַחַר יִשְׁתֶּה הַנָּזִיר יַיִן“, מֵאָה וּשְׁלשִׁים תֵּיבוֹת...”מִזְרָק“, עַל שֵׁם: וַיִּפֹּל רֹכְבוֹ אָחוֹר...לָמָּה שִׁבְעִים, כְּנֶגֶד שִׁבְעִים אוֹתִיּוֹת הָאֲמוּרוֹת בְּבִרְכַּת דָּן, מִן ”דָּן יָדִין עַמּוֹ“ ...עַד ”וַיִּפֹּל רֹכְבוֹ אָחוֹר“...”אֵילִם חֲמִשָּׁה עַתֻּדִים חֲמִשָּׁה כְּבָשִׂים בְּנֵי שָׁנָה חֲמִשָּׁה“, לָמָּה שְׁלשָׁה מִינִים, כְּנֶגֶד שְׁלשָׁה מִינִים שֶׁל קָרְבָּנוֹת שֶׁהָיָה מֵבִיא נְזִיר טֻמְאָה...דָּבָר אַחֵר, לָמָּה שְׁלשָׁה מִינִים, כְּנֶגֶד שָׁלשׁ פְּעָמִים שֶׁהִכָּה שִׁמְשׁוֹן בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים בְּחַיָּיו. --במדבר רבה יד:ט Artscroll's commentary on the Midrash adds: >Why did the leader of Dan invest his offerings with allusions to /nezirus/? Not just to celebrate the illustrious Nazirite destined to emerge from his tribe. He did so in recognition of the fact that Dan's special quality, its unique contribution to the spiritual wholeness of the nation, is the outsized potential of a single Jew...and the capacity of individual achievements to alter the face, and improve the lot, of the entire nation. > /Nezirus/ in general, and Samson in particular, exemplify this quality...In its broadest sense, /nezirus/ represents the power of an individual engaged in his private affairs to protect and perfect the entire nation. --Artscroll Midrash, Bamidbar Rabbah, Nasso 14:9, Insight A to footnote 558, page 28:1 And this theme of דן runs through תנ״ך. When Yaakov's children go down to Egypt, דן is the only one who has only one child: {:he} ><b>ח</b> ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה יעקב ובניו; בכר יעקב ראובן׃...<b>כג</b> ובני דן חשים׃ --בראשית פרק מו And when they enter ארץ ישראל ‎ 250 years, דן is the only tribe that hasn't split into subtribes: {:he} ><b>מב</b> אלה בני דן למשפחתם לשוחם משפחת השוחמי; אלה משפחת דן למשפחתם׃ <b>מג</b> כל משפחת השוחמי לפקדיהם ארבעה וששים אלף וארבע מאות׃ --במדבר פרק כו <blockquote lang=he><p> כאן גלתה לנו התורה,כי אין חכמה ואין עצה לנגד ה׳. לבנימין היו עשרה בנים...ולדן--רק בן אחד, חושים בן דן...ואעפ״כ עלתה לו שהוא היה מרובה באוכלוסין מבנימין</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=38071&pgnum=164">חפץ חיים על התורה, פנחס</a></footer></blockquote> In these terms, דן is a tribe of individuals, not families. This, being an individual, is the essence of נזירות. Their נדר allows them to in effect create their own Torah. {:he} ><b>ב</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם; איש או אשה כי יפלא לנדר נדר נזיר להזיר לה׳׃ <b>ג</b> מיין ושכר יזיר חמץ יין וחמץ שכר לא ישתה; וכל משרת ענבים לא ישתה וענבים לחים ויבשים לא יאכל׃...<b>ה</b> כל ימי נדר נזרו תער לא יעבר על ראשו; עד מלאת הימם אשר יזיר לה׳ קדש יהיה גדל פרע שער ראשו׃ <b>ו</b> כל ימי הזירו לה׳ על נפש מת לא יבא׃ --במדבר פרק ו {:he} ><em>יַזִּיר</em>: אֵין נְזִירוּת בְּכָל מָקוֹם אֶלָּא פְּרִישׁוּת, וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר (ויקרא כב:כ): וְיִנָּזְרוּ מִקָּדְשֵׁי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. --במדבר רבה י:ח >Separation is a fundamental aspect of /nezirus/. Not only do we see this from the basic meaning of the word...but it is evident as well from the laws of /nezirus/, which separate the Nazirite from the ranks of ordinary people, and from the stream of everyday life... > The Nazirite's rise to greatness teaches us that there are two different methods of drawing close to G-d. One is to join forces with other Jews and grow along with them. Nothing can match the power of a community united in G-d's service. Just as the Jewish people received the Torah only when they were bound together "as one man, with one heart" (Mechilta, Exodus 19:2), so can they best absorb its wisdom only when they come together to plumb its depths jointly... > Not always, however, is this option available, for not every community is ripe for a joint effort to scale the mountain of G-d. In that case, the alternative is to follow the Nazirite's example--to pursue a relationship with G-d by *withdrawing* from the community and focusing narrowly on one's personal growth. --Artscroll Midrash, Bamidbar Rabbah, Nasso 10:8, Insight A to footnote 598, page 30:2 And many have noted the parallels between the נזיר and the כהן גדול. The נזיר is proof that anyone can reach the highest heights of קדושה. {:he} >ויעשו את ציץ *נזר הקדש* זהב טהור; ויכתבו עליו מכתב פתוחי חותם קדש לה׳׃ --שמות לט:ל ---- But it isn't all good. {:he} ><b>יג</b> וזאת תורת הנזיר; ביום מלאת ימי נזרו יביא אתו אל פתח אהל מועד׃ <b>יד</b> והקריב את קרבנו לה׳ כבש בן שנתו תמים אחד לעלה *וכבשה אחת בת שנתה תמימה לחטאת*; ואיל אחד תמים לשלמים׃ --במדבר פרק ו Why does the נזיר have to bring a חטאת? We all know the gemara in תענית: {:he} >אמר שמואל: כל היושב בתענית נקרא חוטא. סבר כהאי תנא דתניא: רבי אלעזר הקפר ברבי אומר: מה תלמוד לומר ”וכיפר עליו מאשר חטא על הנפש“? וכי באיזה נפש חטא זה? אלא–שציער עצמו מן היין. --תענית יא,א But I would suggest that the very nature of נזירות, of separation, is problematic, no matter how holy the person is: {:he} >הַפּוֹרֵשׁ מִדַּרְכֵי צִבּוּר אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁלֹּא עָבַר עֲבֵרוֹת אֶלָּא נִבְדָּל מֵעֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה מִצְוֹת בִּכְלָלָן וְלֹא נִכְנָס בְּצָרָתָן וְלֹא מִתְעַנֶּה בְּתַעֲנִיתָן אֶלָּא הוֹלֵךְ בְּדַרְכּוֹ כְּאֶחָד מִגּוֹיֵי הָאָרֶץ וּכְאִלּוּ אֵינוֹ מֵהֶן אֵין לוֹ חֵלֶק לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. --משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה ג:יא ---- And I think this is represented by the symbol of דן as a snake. I presented this idea in <//פרשת ויחי תשע״ח>: the Midrash tells us the symbols of each of the tribes: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>באותות</em>: סימנין היו לכל נשיא ונשיא מפה וצבע...ראובן ..מצוייר עליו דודאים...יהודה...מצוייר עליו אריה...<em>דן...מצוייר עליו נחש על שם יהי דן נחש</em>...על מפה של אפרים היה מצוייר שור על שם בכור שורו זה...</p> <footer class=source>במדבר רבה (וילנא) פרשת במדבר פרשה ב סימן ז </footer></blockquote> But the Ibn Ezra had a different version: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>באתת</em>: סימנים היו בכל דגל ודגל. וקדמונינו אמרו, שהיה לדגל ראובן צורת אדם מכח דרש דודאים, ובדגל יהודה צורת אריה, כי בו המשילו יעקב, ובדגל אפרים צורת שור, מטעם בכור שור, ובדגל דן צורת נשר, עד שידמו לכרובים שראה יחזקאל הנביא. </p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, במדבר ב:ב</footer></blockquote> יחזקאל had a vision of ה׳'s throne, the מרכבה, carried by כרובים, angels with wings and faces of humans, lions, oxen and eagles. I've said many times that this represented the camp of Israel, that the four parts of the camp carried ה׳'s presence in the world. And all of these were needed to bring the שכינה in the משכן: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> ראה קראתי בשם בצלאל בן אורי בן חור למטה יהודה׃ ...<b>ו</b> ואני הנה נתתי אתו את אהליאב בן אחיסמך למטה דן ובלב כל חכם לב נתתי חכמה; ועשו את כל אשר צויתך׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק לא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>ואהליאב</em>: משבט דן, מן הירודין שבשבטים מבני השפחות, והשוהו המקום לבצלאל למלאכת המשכן, והוא מגדולי השבטים, לקיים מה שנאמר (איוב לד:יט) וְלֹא נִכַּר שׁוֹעַ לִפְנֵי דָל.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות לה:לד</footer></blockquote> So we have two different versions of what the symbol of דן looked like. But the truth is, a נשר isn't really an eagle but a vulture:  And a stylized vulture certainly could look like a winged snake (as in יחזקאל's vision of the כרובים). [After I gave this shiur, I found the following Abarbanel:] {:he} >ובדגל דן היה צורת נשר מפני שיעקב דימהו לנחש, שהוא שפיפון עלי אורח, ויש לו כנפים לעוף. והוא היותר תקיף שבמינו והוא הדרקון. --אברבנל, דברים ב:א [Similarly שני לוחות הברית, תורה שבכתב, במדבר, נשא, בהעלותך, תורה אור, במדבר יח] ---- דן was the tribe for those who didn't fit in with any tribe: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>מאסף לכל המחנות</em>: תלמוד ירושלמי: לפי שהיה שבטו של דן מרובה באוכלוסין היה נוסע באחרונה וכל מי שהיה מאבד דבר היה מחזירו לו. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>In the encampment in the Midbar, Dan was the last tribe to move. It was Dan’s job to gather in those people who fell behind. This applied not just on a physical level: </p> <p>People whose spiritual level had dropped and who therefore lagged behind their own tribe could be absorbed into Dan, who would then raise their madreigah, enabling them to return to their rightful place.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.mishpacha.com/grasp-the-light/">Shira Smiles, <cite>Grasp the Light</cite></a></footer></blockquote> But individualism can be dangerous; the story of שמשון and his downfall is an object lesson in the importance of community. {:he} >וּלְכָךְ קָרָא ”מִזְרָק“, שֶׁנִּזְרַק שִׁמְשׁוֹן מִן אֶחָיו, שֶׁלֹא רָצָה לִשָֹּׂא אִשָּׁה מִבְּנוֹת אֶחָיו כִּי אִם מִבְּנוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים. --במדבר רבה יד:ט דן symbolized the power of the one, the outsider, and that sentiment had to be part of כנסת ישראל. But it is dangerous; דן can be either eagle or snake, the highest of the high or the lowest of the low.
