This week's parsha ends with the war with Amalek. We don't get a lot of detail; just 6 words: {:he} > ויבא עמלק; וילחם עם ישראל ברפידם׃ --שמות יז:ח The story is filled out a little when the מצווה of זכר עמלק is mentioned in ספר דברים: {:he} ><b>יז</b> זכור את אשר עשה לך עמלק בדרך בצאתכם ממצרים׃ <b>יח</b> אשר קרך בדרך ויזנב בך כל הנחשלים אחריך ואתה עיף ויגע; ולא ירא אלקים׃ --דברים פרק כה "He tailed after the נחשלים": what are נחשלים? The root חשל is a {:he}/hapax legomenon/. Onkelos, and many English translations, translates it as "stragglers". {:he} >דִּי עָרְעָךְ בְּאָרְחָא וְקָטֵל בָּךְ כָּל דַּהֲווֹ מִתְאַחֲרִין בַּתְרָךְ וְאַתְּ מְשַׁלְהֵי וְלָאֵי וְלָא דָחֵיל מִן קֳדָם יְיָ׃ --תרגום אונקלוס, דברים כה:יח In Aramaic, חשל means "crush": {:he} >ומלכו רביעאה תהוא תקיפה כפרזלא; כל קבל די פרזלא מהדק *וחשל* כלא וכפרזלא די מרעע כל אלן תדק ותרע׃ --דניאל ב:מ Most מפרשים take it as a variant of חלש, "weak": {:he} >ויתכן להיות מלת נחשלים כמו נחלשים וכן כבש כשב. --אבן עזרא, דברים כה:יח And the Even Shoshan concordance defines it as a portmanteau of "weak" and "stumbling" (חשל → כשל): {:he} >היה חלש וכוֹשל --אברהם אבן־שושן, קונקורדנציה חדשה Stragglers, weak, beaten and stumbling. All of those fit the context of "tailing the עיף ויגע". But where do we see that in our parsha? It's actually implied by the location of the battle: וילחם עם ישראל ברפידם. We have to look at the previous paragraph: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם על פי ה׳; ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם׃ <b>ב</b> וירב העם עם משה ויאמרו תנו לנו מים ונשתה; ויאמר להם משה מה תריבון עמדי מה תנסון את ה׳׃...<b>ה</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה עבר לפני העם וקח אתך מזקני ישראל; ומטך אשר הכית בו את היאר קח בידך והלכת׃ <b>ו</b> הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור *בחרב* והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם; ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל׃ --שמות פרק יז And the next narrative: {:he} >ויסעו מרפידים ויבאו מדבר סיני ויחנו במדבר; ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר׃ --שמות יט:ב The people are in Refidim and complain about thirst. Moshe and the leaders go to חרב (Mount Sinai) to strike the rock, and so the people are traveling from Refidim where there is no water to Sinai where there is, and Amalek then attacks the people who are still in Refidim. That's the stragglers, the ones who can't move as fast as the bulk of the people. ---- But it seems like a terrible thing, to leave people behind just because they are exhausted. So Rashi brings another interpretation: {:he} ><em>כל הנחשלים אחריך</em>: חסרי כח מחמת חטאם, שהיה הענן פולטן. --רש"י, דברים כה:יח It was a spiritual weakness that led them to fall behind. If we connect נחשלים to כשל, stumbling, then we realize that in תנ״ך it is almost always used metaphorically: {:he} >שובה ישראל עד ה' אלקיך; כי כשלת בעונך׃ --הושע יד:ב And the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan (I'm just showing off there) makes it more explicit: {:he} >דְּאַרְעוּ יַתְכוֹן בְּאָרְחָא וַהֲוָה קָטִיל בְּכוֹן כָּל דַּהֲוָה מְהַרְהֵר לְמִסְטֵי בָּתַר מֵימְרִי הִינוּן גּוּבְרַיָא מִשִּׁבְטָא דְבֵית דָּן דַּהֲוָה בִידֵיהוֹן פּוּלְחָנָא נוּכְרָאָה וַהֲוָה עֲנָנָא פָּלִיט יַתְהוֹן... --תרגום יונתן, דברים כה:יח What is the story of the tribe of Dan and their עבודה זרה? {:he} ><b>א</b> ויהי איש מהר אפרים ושמו מיכיהו׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר לאמו אלף ומאה הכסף אשר לֻקַּח לך ואת אלית וגם אמרת באזני הנה הכסף אתי אני לקחתיו; ותאמר אמו ברוך בני לה׳׃ <b>ג</b> וישב את אלף ומאה הכסף לאמו; ותאמר אמו הקדש הקדשתי את הכסף לה׳ מידי לבני לעשות פסל ומסכה ועתה אשיבנו לך׃ <b>ד</b> וישב את הכסף לאמו; ותקח אמו מאתים כסף ותתנהו לצורף ויעשהו פסל ומסכה ויהי בבית מיכיהו׃ <b>ה</b> והאיש מיכה לו בית אלהים; ויעש אפוד ותרפים וימלא את יד אחד מבניו ויהי לו לכהן׃ <b>ו</b> בימים ההם אין מלך בישראל; איש הישר בעיניו יעשה׃ --שופטים פרק יז It's important to note that פסל מיכה is a פסל of ה׳, not of some foreign god. These are "religious" Jews who say ברוך ה׳, and they're doing the best they can to fulfill the will of הקב״ה. This is not the same as the עבודה זרה of נדב ואביהו who were גדולים who tried to create their own form of עבודת ה׳; these are simple people who don't know any better. And שבט דן takes this פסל and establishes their own בית אלהים n the north: {:he} ><b>ל</b> ויקימו להם בני דן את הפסל; ויהונתן בן גרשם בן מ^נשה הוא ובניו היו כהנים לשבט הדני עד יום גלות הארץ׃ <b>לא</b> וישימו להם את פסל מיכה אשר עשה כל ימי היות בית האלקים בשלה׃ --שופטים פרק יח So דן is the symbol of the folk religion of the Jewish people, those who מְהַרְהֵר לְמִסְטֵי בָּתַר מֵימְרִי הִינוּן גּוּבְרַיָא מִשִּׁבְטָא דְבֵית דָּן דַּהֲוָה בִידֵיהוֹן פּוּלְחָנָא נוּכְרָאָה. נחשלים is passive, those who are weakened and made to stumble, the חלש וכוֹשל spiritually. And there are other textual hints that those were the ones victimized by Amalek. {:he} >[<em>ויזנב בך כל הנחשלים אחריך ואתה עיף ויגע; ולא ירא אלקים</em>]: אחרים אומרים: "ולא ירא אלקים", אלו ישראל שלא היו בידן מצוות. --מכילתא דרבי ישמעאל, מַסֶּכְתָּא דַעֲמָלֵק א:ב {:he} >דורשי רשומות אומרין אין ”רפידים“ אלא ”רפין ידים“ לפי שריפו ידיהם של ישראל מן התורה, לפיכך בא עליהן שונא; שאין השונא בא אלא על החטא ועל העבירה. --מכילתא דרבי שמעון בן יוחאי יז:ח ---- Zohar Atkins looks at this and says that the attack of Amalek was a test: would משה וזקני ישראל go back for those נחשלים? >[Amalek's attack presents] a challenge to the Jewish people to which we must respond: Will you carry on without the stragglers, sacrificing them to Amalek, or will you insist that the integrity of the covenant requires not just the front ranks but the back ranks, too? ...The litmus test of the people is not how much Torah its elites study or observe, but how committed it is to the Jewish life of the median Jew, and even the proverbial “bottom-quartile” Jew. A person of modest intellect (the simpleton, /tam/) or simply low literacy and opportunity (the one who doesn’t know how to ask, /she’ayno yodeah lishol/) are not required to be great scholars. It is enough to sit at the table and take in what they can. But the rest of us have a duty to become /chachamim/, sages, and to do so, not by leaving the company of the wicked child, the simple child, and the one who doesn’t know how to ask, but by sitting with them. --Zohar Atkins, [_Peoplehood: The Rejoinder to Amalek_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/peoplehood-the-rejoinder-to-amalek) And he connects this to what Rabbi Shulman said in his /drasha/ last week, about Moshe's demand to Pharaoh: {:he} > <b>ח</b> ויושב את משה ואת אהרן אל פרעה ויאמר אלהם לכו עבדו את ה׳ אלקיכם; מי ומי ההלכים׃ <b> ט</b> ויאמר משה בנערינו ובזקנינו נלך; בבנינו ובבנותנו בצאננו ובבקרנו נלך כי חג ה׳ לנו׃ <b>י</b> ויאמר אלהם יהי כן ה׳ עמכם כאשר אשלח אתכם ואת טפכם; ראו כי רעה נגד פניכם׃ <b>יא</b> לא כן לכו נא הגברים ועבדו את ה׳ כי אתה אתם מבקשים; ויגרש אתם מאת פני פרעה׃ --שמות פרק י >We have no intermediary, no priests, no representative before our G-d. If we are to go, we must all go; the tiniest baby in the cradle, the last sheep in our possession. None and nothing may remain, for we are all integral to form a חג ה׳, "a circle about G-d". --Hirsch Chumash, Exodus X:9 Note the ה׳ doesn't decide to fight Amalek. The decision of what to do about Amalek is a test for Moshe. ה׳ doesn't say anything until after the battle is over. {:he} ><b>ח</b> ויבא עמלק; וילחם עם ישראל ברפידם׃ <b>ט</b> ויאמר משה אל יהושע בחר לנו אנשים וצא הלחם בעמלק; מחר אנכי נצב על ראש הגבעה ומטה האלקים בידי׃ <b> י</b> ויעש יהושע כאשר אמר לו משה להלחם בעמלק; ומשה אהרן וחור עלו ראש הגבעה׃... > <b>יד</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה כתב זאת זכרון בספר ושים באזני יהושע; כי מחה אמחה את זכר עמלק מתחת השמים׃ --שמות פרק יז Moshe sends Yehoshua to go back and rescue the נחשלים, those whom הענן פולטן. That turns out to be the only way they could get to הר סיני to receive the Torah. {:he} ><em>ויחן שם ישראל</em>: כאיש אחד בלב אחד. --רש"י, שמות יט:ב >“Let my people go” should be heard with an emphasis not on *go*, but on *people*. We rise and fall as a people.
