To review the shiur from last time, I interpreted the pasuk ืืืฉื ื ืืช ืืขืื ืืขืื ืืื in terms of the midrash, that David complained to ืืณ about the fact that madness exists in the world. I said that it was not a general complaint, but specifically about the madness that had befallen Saul. ืืณ responded that not only would David come to understand, but that he would actually need that very ailment. When David was faced with the danger of becoming a ืคืืืฉืชื mercenary, he prayed for madness rather than have to face the unbearable reality.
Part of the reason I felt it necessary to incorporate the midrash is ืชืืืืื ืื, which is described as ืืฉื ืืชื ืืช ืืขืื ืืคื ื ืืืืืื, but the climax of that perek is ืื ืืืืฉ ืืืคืฅ ืืืืโฆื ืฆืจ ืืฉืื ื ืืจืข. Without the midrash, it is hard to see the connection between our story and ืืฉืื ืืจืข.
The Gemara understands our perek this way, as being a lesson in ืืฉืื ืืจืข:

The ืืื ืืงืจ on ืืืงืจื ืื:ื expands on this. He points out that it should be impossible to do ืชืฉืืื on ืืฉืื ืืจืข, since there is no way to take back words that have been said or undo the damage that has been done. Think of the old Chassidic story of the man who wanted to do ืชืฉืืื for his act of ืืฉืื ืืจืข. He was told to cut open his feather pillows and scatter the pillows to the windโฆthen gather them all up.
The protagonist of the midrash is a ืจืืื, literally a peddler but connected to the word ืจืืืืืช, tale-bearing. He was a ืจืืื who discovered the cure for his sins, and spread the word around ืฆืคืืจื, a city in northern Israel but a reference here to tweeting birds, spreading rumors (ืจืฉืดื brings this metaphor to explain why the ืืฆืืจืข has to bring birds for his sacrifice) (the connection to the modern โtweetingโ is entirely intentional). The ืจืืื told ืจืณ ืื ืื that he didnโt need the cure; he didnโt speak ืืฉืื ืืจืข. He shows ืจืณ ืื ืื a ืกืคืจ ืชืืืื ืืืืจื, a bound ืกืคืจ ืชืืืื, that had never been used, since people never bothered to read the words of our pasuk. ืจืณ ืื ืื exclaimed that he had read the words, but read them the way ืจืื ืืืืกื ืืจื in the gemara did, as advice to prevent ืืฉืื ืืจืข, not as means of ืชืฉืืื. The ืชืฉืืื is in the next pasuk, ืืงืฉ ืฉืืื ืืจืืคืื. The ืืฉืื ืืจืข canโt be taken back; the only recourse is to work to prevent future ืืฉืื ืืจืข, actively chasing after peace between people.

Looking at the rest of the perek, it starts with the historical introduction, then Davidโs statement that he will praise ืืณ at all times, now that he knows that He can save even when everything looks hopeless. ืืืณ ืชืชืืื ื ืคืฉื means something different from ืชืืืชื ืืคื. It means โmy spirit will praise itself, with ืืณโ;โ ืืณ gives me the self-confidence to go on.

The question came up last time when David is described as ืืืชืืื ืืืื, he acted the fool in their hands. What exactly does ืืืชืืื mean? Rav Hirsch points out in his commentary to ืชืืืืืโ ื:ื,โ ืื ืืชืืฆืื ืืืืืื ืื ืื ืขืื ืื that it is the Kal form of ืืื. It is spelling without the ืืืฉ:โ ืึทืึผึดืชึฐืึนืึตื ืึผึฐืึธืึธื. The ืืื we are used to is Piel, spelled with the ืืืฉ:โ ืชึผึดืชึฐืึทืึผึตื ื ึทืคึฐืฉืึดื. The Piel often represents an intesified verb; thus ืกึธืึทืจ, close, vs. ืกึดืึผึตืจ, lock. Rabbi Phillip Ginsbury had an interesting article in Jewish Bible Quarterly contrasting ืืืืึตืจ and ืึฐืึทืึผึตืจ:โ ืึฐืึทืึผึตืจ, the more common verb, means voicing a specific speech. ืืึนืึตืจ, usually implying a spokesman, means speech that is not specified, saying whatever needs to be said.
Here, ืึธืึทื means praise that has no basis: boasting or hypocrisy. ืึดืึตึผื means real praise, something that has a factual basis.

David then addresses his audience, the ืขื ืืื who need to hear his message and be happy. They all should praise ืืณ with him, since ืื ืขื ื ืงืจื ืืืณ ืฉืืข. David refers to himself as ืขื ื, which as we have seen is used interchangeably with ืขื ื. He is one of those ืขื ืืื, and he was saved.
In ืคืกืืง ื, David uses the term ืืขืื, which calls to mind his ืฉื ืืชื ืืช ืืขืื. He looked to change his ืืขื to be saved, but the only ืืขื he needed was ืื ืืื ืืณ.
We dealt with the middle part of the perek, where David reveals the secret of his success (or his realization of what he should have donw to succeed). The perek then goes back to the ืขื ืืื, that ืืณ saves them, who are righteous but punishes the wicked. Hirsh sees ืคืกืืง ืื as still referring to those wicked: ืฆืขืงื ืืืณ ืฉืืข. They (the ืขืฉื ืจืข) call out in ืชืฉืืื, and they can too be saved, as long as they are ื ืฉืืจื ืื (note: not the same as โbroken-heartedโ in English) and ืืืื ืจืื. In that case, ืื ืืืฉืื ืื ืืืกืื ืื.
The theme of the perek thus becomes one of ืชืฉืืื, as in the midrash cited above. David praises ืืณ for saving him and realizes what happened was a result of his bad-mouthing both Saul and ืืณ. The way forward is to accept that (ืืจืืืช ืก,ื)โ ืื ืืขืืื ืจืืื ื ืืื ืขืืื. Weโve said before that this philosophy is the theodicy of ืกืคืจ ืชืืืืื; I think that this incident marks the start of that attitude.โ
