This is largely based on Rav Elchanan Sametโs Tehillim shiurim on VBM, parts one, two and three.
Last time we looked at the aggadic reading of Chushaiโs conversation with David, and how he demanded that David be ืืืจืฉ ืกืืืืื, and that halachic concept came from ืกืคืจ ืชืืืืื itself: (ืชืืืื ืงืื:ื):โ ืกึฐืืึผืึดืื ืึธืขึทื ืึฐืขืึนืึธื ืขึฒืฉืืึผืึดื ืึถึผืึฑืึถืช ืึฐืึธืฉึธืืจ. Now I would like to look at that perek in more detail.
ืคืจืง ืงืื is actually part of a diptych with ืคืจืง ืงืื. We looked at them before but Iโm going to analyze them in much more detail now. They are the only chapters of ืชืืืืื with a complete alphabetic acrostic, and they have identical structures:

Each starts with ืืืืืื, then has 8 psukim with 2 phrase each, then 3 psukim with 3 phrases each. And the text for each phrase is very regular and precise; they are in iambic tetrameter or iambic trimeter. We never talk about meter in Biblical poetry; it just wasnโt a thing. Except for now.

The alphabetic psalms were important:

But the two explanations for the acrosticโthat it marks its importance and that it makes it easier to memorizeโare not mutually exclusive. The two perakim are ordered and have such simple language because they are important. They read like childrenโs rhymes because they are meant for everyone. We donโt read them as part of davening now, except for one pasuk (generally said by little children): ืจืืฉืืช ืืืื ืืจืืช ืืณ ืฉืื ืืื ืืื ืขืฉืืื ืชืืืชื ืขืืืช ืืขื. But I would argue that they were intended for that.
The first perek is a praise of ืืณ:โ ืืืื ืืณ ืืื ืืื while the second is a paean to the righteous (specifically, generous) person: ืืฉืจื ืืืฉ ืืจื ืืช ืืณ. They are tied together both by their identical structure, and by common language: the end of ืคืกืืง ื, which is identical: ืืฆืืงืชื ืขืืืช ืืขื, with similar themes in ืคืกืืง ื:โ ืื ืื ืืจืืื, and in ืคืกืืง ื:โ ืกืืืืื/ืกืืื ืืื, and there is a transition from ืงืื:ื:โ ืจืืฉืืช ืืืื ืืจืืช ืืณ to ืงืื:ื:โ ืืฉืจื ืืืฉ ืืจื ืืช ืืณ.
What is the lesson of the parallel between the praise of ืืงืืดื and the praise of the ืฆืืืง?
(ืชืืืืื ืงืื:ื)โ ืึทื ึผืึผื ืึฐืจึทืืึผื ืึฐืฆึทืึผึดืืง Theโฆpassuk could be saying that Hashem is compassionate, or it might mean that the tzaddik is compassionate. Why would the passuk be so vague? To teach us that we must imitate Hashem. Just as He is compassionate, merciful and just, so should we be.
And both have at the beginning the identical phrase, ืืฆืืงืชื ืขืืืช ืืขื, and at the end the similar ืงืืืฉ ืื ืืจื ืฉืื and ืงืจื ื ืชืจืื ืืืืื. Weโre talking about their fame, how others see them.
The lesson of this pair of perakim is that we emulate ืืงืืดื as an example to others.

There are two halves; each starts with the ืืขืฉืื of ืืณ and ends with the ืืจืืช.
There are two ways to appreciate the will of G-d in the universe.
And the two halves of the perek reflect this. The first half is addressed to all of humanity (at those who have the inherent moral sense to listen); they are the ืกืื ืืฉืจืื, the counsel of the upright. The second half deals with ืขึทืึผืึน, and is addressed to the ืขืื, the community, what we call ืื ืกืช ืืฉืจืื.
And all of that can be understood by anyone, without direct revelation. We look at the world with a sense of awe, what Rudolf Otto called the โnuminousโ. The universe itself is the
The second half is ืื ืืขืฉืื ืืืื ืืขืื, which itself has two components: ืืณ's intervention in Jewish history, ืืชืช ืืื ื ืืืช ืืืื. But more than that, there is the gift of the Torah, the ืืขืฉื ืืืื that are ืืืช ืืืฉืคื. The rest of the section is about the eternal value of His laws, As we discussed last time, the ืคืฉื of ืกืืืืื ืืขื ืืขืืื is that the Torah is โreliableโ, but the the ืืจืฉ is that the laws are ืกืืื to one another, that they logically follow and the whole creates structure that defines ืืืช ืืืฉืจ.

ืืจืืช ื ื is unconditional. On the other hand, ืืืจืช ืกืื ื is conditional on our behavior. Hence the difference between the two verses: ืึถืจึถืฃ ื ึธืชึทื ืึดืืจึตืึธืื; ืึดืึฐืึผึนืจ ืึฐืขืึนืึธื ืึผึฐืจึดืืชืึน refers to all of humanity (indeed all of the universe). ืืณ remembers the ืืจืืช.

After the parallel sections that celebrate what Rav Hutner calls the ืขืฉืจื ืืืืจืืช and ืขืฉืจื ืืืจืืช, the ninth pasuk has a third phrase that synthesizes the two. What should our reaction to the ืืืื ืจืฆืื ืืณ be?

If on the highest level man draws near to G-d and is included in the infinite divine order of being, is there any room left for the mitzvot maโassiyot? Would not all these commandments, say, for example, the commandment of tzitzit, appear to belong only to the preliminary pedagogical stage where man prepares himself to reach the summum bonum? Once, however, he has attained that goal, why pay attention to such a โtrivialโ matter as observing the commandments (shemirat ma-mitzvot)? Indeed, precisely this antinomian conclusion was drawn by both the Sabbatians and the Frankists. Perhaps these antinomian tendencies were even discernable in Hassidism in its beginnings.
Love means never having to say youโre sorry.
We keep the mitzvot, all those โpettyโ details, because of our ืืจืืช ืืณ. We obey the Absolute Ruler of the universe.
Thus, for Maimonides, the love of G-d both endows the ethical norm with authority as being the mode, par excellence, of imitatio Dei, and rehabilitates the theoretical Halakhah, the study of Torah, as a philosophy, while the fear of G-d rehabilitates the practical Halakhah, the ritual and ceremonial laws on the practical level.
So, while my ืืืื ืืณ ืืื ืืื about ืืืืื ืืขืฉื ืืณ and ื ืืื ืื ืื ืคืงืืืื leads to ืืืืช ืืณ and the overwhelming desire to cleave to Him (and thatโs a good thing), it must lead to the conclusion of ืงืืืฉ ืื ืืจื ืฉืื. Our closeness to ืืงืืดื is in the realm of imitatio Dei, of ืื ืืงืืดื ื ืงืจื ืื ืื, ืืฃ ืืชื ืืื ืื ืื. Love of G-d must lead to awe of G-d,
ืจืืฉืืช ืืืื isnโt really the starting point for wisdom; to paraphrase Winston Churchill, it is โthe end of the beginningโ. ืกืคืจ ืงืืืช starts from zero, trying to understand the meaning of our existence if we will cease to exist; in Heideggerโs terms, life is Sein-zum-Tode, โBeing Toward Deathโ. He ends at the point that we, as believing Jews, start:
And only if we realize that will we have ืฉืื ืืื, which I would translate as โreal successโ.

Who is the subject of ืชืืืชื? The context of the perek, as well as the parallel to ืคืกืืง ื,โ ืืฆืืงืชื ืขืืืช ืืขื, indicate that it is G-dโs praise that stands forever. ืชืืืชื forms an inclusio with the initial ืืืืืื (like ืชืืืืื ืงืื,โ ืชืืืื ืืืื to ืชืืืืช ืืณ ืืืืจ ืคื). But the pasuk itself is talking about ืื ืขืฉืืื, and most ืืคืจืฉืื understand that it the praise of the ืืจื ืืณ and ืขืืฉื ืคืงืืืื that will stand forever.
And that makes this pasuk the transition to the the next perek which starts with As we said above, the ambiguity emphasizes that the ืฆืืืง should strive to emulate ืืงืืดื, so that all the things we say about ืืณ will be said about them as well.

The first section is an introduction to the ืฆืืืง who internalizes the message at the end of the last perek. They are ืืจื ืืช ืืณ and therefore ืืืฆืืชืื ืืคืฅ ืืื. And ืืื has a specific meaning:
Itโs a reference to ืฉืืข:
The other two sections deal with the two ways we serve ืืณ with our ืืืื, our belongings. One is to use it to help others: ืืึนื ืึดืืฉื ืืึนื ึตื ืึผืึทืึฐืึถื, and ืคึผึดืึผึทืจ ื ึธืชึทื ืึธืึถืึฐืืึนื ึดืื. The other is to be satisfied with what ืืณ gives us:
When it says ืื ืืขืืื ืื ืืืื it doesnโt mean that bad things will never happen; it is like the pasuk we say after ืืจืืช ืืืืื:
Hirsch and the Etz Yosef (Enoch Zundel ben Yoseph, 19th century commentator on ืืืจืฉ ืชื ืืืื, ืืืฆื, ื) both translate ืืืจืขื ืืืงืฉ ืืื as โ[even] when his children are begging.โ The ืฆืืืง does not feel himself abandoned when he has to depend on others; he is aware that ืืณ provides but does so in various ways. Just as the ืฆืืืง gives graciously, he accepts graciously. That is why ืืื ืืขืฉืจ ืืืืชื.
ืคืกืืง ื is the reward of the ืฆืืืง: their legacy will be carried on by their children, taking ืืืืจ in a moral sense (ืึตืืึถืืึผ ืึดืึผืึนืจ, ืึทืึผืึนืึตืฉื ืึถืช ืึดืฆึฐืจืึน), parallel to ืืฉืจืื.
The ืืคืจืฉืื generally interpret ืื ืื ืืจืืื ืืฆืืืง as referring to ืืณ:
But as we mentioned above, it is ambiguous, and it fits the theme of the perek better to say it refers to the ืฆืืืง:

Each of the three sections ends with a similar message: ืฆืืงืชื ืขืืืช ืืขื or ืืืืจ ืขืืื ืืืื ืฆืืืง. Why is their fame so important? Should the ืฆืืืง care what others think of them?
That is an important part of being a ืฆืืืง. When the brothers conspire to kill Joseph, Reuven tries to save him:

Rashi makes a comment that seems obvious:
The Torah never tells us what people are thinking (as we see with Aharon, ืืจืื ืืฉืื ืืืื). All we see are external actions and words, and we have to derive the characters' internal states:
[In the Bible] thoughts and feeling remain unexpressed, are only suggested by the silence and the fragmentary speeches; the whole, permeated with the most unrelieved suspense and directed toward a single goalโฆremains mysterious and โfraught with background.โ
There is an implied criticism that the midrash is picking up on. The ืจืึผืึท ืึทืงึผึนืึถืฉื finds it necessary to tell us what they were thinking; they didnโt show it well enough. The advice to authors is always โshow, donโt tellโ. Thatโs good advice for the characters as well.
But the point that the midrash is making is that we are also literary characters; there is a plot and purpose to our lives. If we are going to be an object lesson to others, we must โshow, donโt tellโ.
โฆif a
literature is called rich in the possession of a few classic tragedies,
what shall we say to a National Tragedy lasting for fifteen hundred years,
in which the poets and the actors were also the heroes?
What we do, the way we act is being watched and recorded. We are a lesson not only to those around us but for the future, and we need to act like it.
And so ืงืจื ื ืชืจืื ืืืืื is the climax of the perek. The ืฆืืืง emulates ืืงืืดื, and the world will emulate the ืฆืืืง. Then the last pasuk is the response of the I have to say I am disappointed with this pasuk; the thought would work well in the middle of the perek, but it seems too vindictive for the conclusion. I realize itโs a terrible chutzpah to criticize the poetics of ืชืืืืื, but I would rather have the perek end with something like ืชืืืืื ืขื:โ ืื ืืฉื ืื ืืคืจื ืืืงืฉื ืจืขืชื; the ืจืฉืขืื are discomfited, then something about ืฉืืื as they return to ืืณ, then a conclusion that ends with ืชืืืื like the previous perek, tying it back to the ืืืืืื of the beginning.
But no one asked me.
But perhaps I am missing the point of this last pasuk. ืชืืืช ืจืฉืขืื ืชืืื may not be a vindictive cry for vengeance, but a trope about the nature of ืชืืืืื.

Rav Hutner goes on to say that the victory of ืงืืืฉ over ืืื is the ability to take everything in the world and turn it into ืืฉื ืฉืืื. The battle of ืืื ืืจืข in ืชืืืืื is symbolic of that, and only when that is accomplished can we sing ืฉืืจื. So ืจืฉืข ืืจืื ืืืขืกโฆืชืืืช ืจืฉืขืื ืชืืื is in fact parallel to the ืืืืืื that starts our diptych, when we can take this world created with ืขืฉืจืช ืืืืืจืืช and elevate it with the mitzvot created with ืขืฉืจื ืืืจืืช.
