Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

The best-laid schemes oโ€™ mice anโ€™ men
Gang aft agley,
Anโ€™ leaโ€™e us nought but grief anโ€™ pain,

The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often awry,

The previous paragraph had Jonathan joining into a covenant with David, but here he actually agrees to the plan and gives David permission to leave. The plan as outlined by David had one flaw (ื•ื™ืืžืจ ื“ื•ื“ ืืœ ื™ื”ื•ื ืชืŸ ืžื™ ื™ื’ื™ื“ ืœื™): how could Jonathan get the information to David without being found by Saulโ€™s spies? Jonathan now has the answer: a code in an apparently innocuous message. Note the subtlety in the language. If everything is good, Jonathan will talk to the ื ืขืจ. If David needs to hide, Jonathan will talk to the ืขืœื, which also means โ€œyouthโ€ but has a midrashic implication of โ€œhiddenโ€; โ€œthe youth with a hidden messageโ€. We saw this when Saul asked about Davidโ€™s ancestry:

Jonathan will come out to David by the ื™ื•ื ื”ืžืขืฉื”, which the Targum translates as ื™ื•ืžื ื“ื—ื•ืœื, the profane day. ืจืืฉ ื—ื“ืฉ is not a day for work; not a real ื™ื•ื ื˜ื•ื‘ but women have the ืžื ื”ื’ not to do ืžืœื›ืื”, and the ืžืจื“ื›ื™ adds that ืžืœืื›ื” ื›ื‘ื™ื“ื” should be avoided. The ืžืฉื‘ืฆื•ืช ื–ื”ื‘ explains that this is why David could hide in the field for three days; no one would be working the fields over ืจืืฉ ื—ื“ืฉ.

Jonathan then re-emphasizes the covenant. If David has to flee, Jonathan will protect him. When David becomes king, Jonathan and his family will remain safe.

Note the emphasis on Saulโ€™s seat: ื•ื™ืฉื‘ ื”ืžืœืš ืขืœ ืžื•ืฉื‘ื• ื›ืคืขื ื‘ืคืขื ืืœ ืžื•ืฉื‘ ื”ืงื™ืจ. I think this is showing us Saulโ€™s paranoia, that he made sure to keep his back to the wall so no one could sneak up on him.

What does it mean that Rashi explains that as a matter or respect, Jonathan would not sit next to Saul unless David was present. It is still hard to put the order of events together. The ืžืฉื‘ืฆื•ืช ื–ื”ื‘ brings an explanation that adduces the hierarchy of the original ืžืกื•ืจื”:

I would interpret this as a matter of protocol. Saulโ€™s entourage would enter one by one, present themselves, then sit by him in order. Jonathan came in but when he stood in order to take his seat, instead of David sitting by Saul, Avner came in. Thus the ืžืงื•ื ื“ื•ื“ that was noticed was not Davidโ€™s seat that was empty, but his place in line.

The ืจืœื‘ืดื’ explains the duplication of ื‘ืœืชื™ ื˜ื”ื•ืจ ื”ื•ื ื›ื™ ืœื ื˜ื”ื•ืจ as ืžืงืจื” ื”ื•ืโ€”an incident happened; he is a ื‘ืขืœ ืงืจื™, so ื‘ืœืชื™ ื˜ื”ื•ืจ ื”ื•ื, he is impure and it would be rude to come to a state dinner (likely with a ื–ื‘ื— ืฉืœืžื™ื) in a state of ื˜ื•ืžืื”. This is likely because David is ืœื ื˜ื”ื•ืจ in general; he is a man of war and of passion, so this sort of thing has happened before.

Saulโ€™s outburst is astonishing; what kind of thing is that for a ืžืœืš ื™ืฉืจืืœ to say? The ืžืœื‘ื™ืดื interprets ื ืขื•ืช ื”ืžืจื“ื•ืช as a โ€œtwisted rebellionโ€. It would at least be understandable if Jonathan were to rebel in order to become king himself; that happens all the time (and will happen a few times to David). But this rebelling to make a stranger king, makes no sense at all.

But what is ืœื‘ืฉืช ืขืจื•ืช ืืžืš?โ€Ž ืจื“ืดืง explains that if you support a stranger, people will say you arenโ€™t really my son, that your mother was unfaithful. ืžืœื‘ื™ืดื explains that it is a direct insult to your mother; she should be the Queen Mother and you will take that away from her (even if you do not care about your own honor). ืจืฉืดื™ connects this with the aftermath of the ืคืœื’ืฉ ื‘ื’ื‘ืขื”, when ื‘ื ื™ ื‘ื ื™ืžืŸ were almost wiped out and took the women from ื™ื‘ืฉ ื’ืœืขื“:

And thus Jonathan was following in his motherโ€™s footsteps in being more outgoing than is proper. But that canโ€™t be taken literally, as ืจืฉืดื™ himself holds that ืคืœื’ืฉ ื‘ื’ื‘ืขื” happened right after Joshuaโ€™s death

Jonathanโ€™s response has implications lโ€™halacha:

The ืžืฉื‘ืฆื•ืช ื–ื”ื‘ explains both the repetition of Jonathanโ€™s statements and his apparent lying about the location of the arrows. Jonathan shot three arrows, one at a time. After the first shot (ื”ื•ื ื™ืจื” ื”ื—ืฆื™), the lad ran to its location and Jonathan shot another arrow past the first and told him that it was past him (ื”ืœื•ื ื”ื—ืฆื™ ืžืžืš ื•ื”ืœืื”), then shot the third even farther and told the lad to run fast (ืžื”ืจื” ื—ื•ืฉื” ืืœ ืชืขืžื“). Thus the ืงืจื™/ื›ืชื™ื‘ of ื”ื—ืฆื™โ€Ž (ื”ื—ืฆื™ื); there were three arrows with one message.

Then, despite all the careful planning, David canโ€™t control himself and comes out of hiding to say goodbye to Jonathan one last time (they will in fact see each other briefly one more time). Itโ€™s a powerful and emotional moment, and we donโ€™t have any evidence that they were observed, but we will see that the plan starts to fall apart very quickly.
