It's time to look at the story of David and Bat Sheva. I assume everyone knows the story, or at least enough to have strong opinions about it. We'll see how our preconceptions work with the text itself. <blockquote lang=en><p>Good artists copy. Any errors or heresies are of course mine. It's a way of reading the story not as a love story but a story of power, failure and redemption, that goes from the delegation to Amon in פרק י to the end of Avshalom's rebellion in פרק יט. It is a ספר נבואה, the story of what it means to be a מלך ישראל. Part of the problem I have is that the story is pretty R-rated. I'm a pediatrician and I have to be very explicit in talking about these sorts of things with teenagers, but I'm uncomfortable using explicit language in the בית מדרש. So I will stick with לשון נקייה, and assume everyone knows what I mean by "conjugal relations". חז״ל, however, have no such compunctions, and I may have to use euphemisms in translating. It is impossible to read the story of Bat Sheva as careful readers without keeping in mind its literary antecedents throughout תנ״ך. More than that, I would assume that David himself was aware of these stories as well, and they influenced how *he* thought about Bat Sheva. The antecedents we will look at are the stories of David's literal ancestors, יהודה and תמר, of בעז and רות, and of דוד himself and אבגיל. To summarize, it certainly seems as though she is flirting with David here, and he rushes to take her as soon as her husband is dead. חז״ל saw something sordid in their interaction as well: <figure class=compare lang=he> <blockquote lang=he><p>כי הוות מיפטרא מיניה<br/> אמרה ליה (שמואל א כה) והטיב ה׳ לאדוני<br/> וזכרת את אמתך<br/> אמר רב נחמן היינו דאמרי אינשי<br/> איתתא בהדי שותא פילכא<br/> איכא דאמרי<br/> שפיל ואזיל בר אווזא<br/> ועינוהי מיטייפי</p> <footer class=source>מגילה יד,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>When she left him she said to him,<br/> "and when the Lord shall have done good to my lord<br/> . . . then remember thy handmaid."<br/> R. Nahman said: This bears out the popular saying,<br/> While a woman talks she spins.<br/> Some adduce the saying:<br/> The goose stoops as it goes along,<br/> but its eyes peer afar.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://halakhah.com/pdf/moed/Megilah.pdf">Soncino translation</a></footer></blockquote> </figure> The Midrash says there was a physical attraction between them from the start: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>הנה היא רוכבת על החמור וירדת בסתר ההר וגו׳</em>: נתגלה שוקה והלכו לאורה, נתגלית שוקה ותפגש אותם, הקרו כולן. </p> <p><em>ולא תהיה לך זאת לפוקה</em>:...בא להזדווג לה, אמרה ליה סופך להכשל באשה אחרת, ולא מוטב לך באחת ולא בשתים? </p> <footer class=source>מדרש שמואל פרשה כג</footer></blockquote> <hr/> As the midrash says, אמרה ליה סופך להכשל באשה אחרת. The story of Avigail and David, even at the level of פשט, is foreshadowing the story of Bat Sheva and David. חז״ל understand that Avigail was in fact a נביא, and her message to David was to beware of this exact situation. It seems that throughout תנ״ך there are these stories of apparent impropriety in the predecessors of David. Why? <blockquote lang=en><p>The cradle of the monarchy is the cradle of the Melech HaMoshiach whose function it will be to eliminate all ambiguities. The time will come when we will understand it all. That is what Moshiach is all about.</p> <p>... The pivotal couplings in the establishment of the messianic line...were all fraught with ambiguities because these were meant to teach us that it is the nature of Moshiach not be daunted by appearances. When directed by the Ribono shel Olam, means can be sanctified by ends, and surface question marks can find their answers in the depths of divine wisdom and understanding.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Music-Made-Heaven-Moshe-Eisemann/dp/0976916193">Rabbi Moshe Eisemann, <cite>Music Made in Heaven</cite></a>, pp. 96-97</footer></blockquote> <i lang=la>Pace </i> Rabbi Eisemann, I don't like this answer. It smacks too much of Sabbateanism: <blockquote lang="en"><p>[T]he nihilism of the Sabbatian and Frankist movements, with its doctrine so profoundly shocking to the Jewish conception of things that the violation of the Torah could become its true fulfillment (<i lang="he">bittulah shel torah zehu kiyyumah</i>), was a dialectical outgrowth of the belief in the Messiahship of Sabbatai Zevi...</p> <p> As long as the last divine sparks (<i lang="he">nitzotzot</i>) of holiness and good which fell at the time of Adam’s primordial sin into the impure realm of the <i lang="he">kelipot</i> (the hylic forces of evil…) have not been gathered back again to their source—so the explanation ran—the process of redemption is incomplete. It is therefore left to the Redeemer, the holiest of men, to accomplish what not even the most righteous souls in the past have been able to do: to descend through the gates of impurity into the realm of the <i lang="he">kelipot</i> and to rescue the divine sparks still imprisoned there.</p> … <p>[From an essay by a Sabbatean:] “But perhaps one can interpret the meaning of the text as follows: since such a person intends his deeds to redound to the benefit of all Israel … if after sinning and passing through the <i lang="he">kelipah</i> he reconsiders and repents completely, he undoubtedly succeeds in raising up many sparks from the <i lang="he">kelipah</i>.”</p> … <p> Among the leaders of the Donmeh the antinomian blessing composed by Sabbatai Zevi, “Blessed art Thou O Lord our God, King of the universe, who permittest the forbidden [<i lang="he">mattir isurim</i>],” became a byword.</p> <footer class="source"><a href="http://cliffordshack-article-archive-storage.blogspot.com/2012/01/no-chapter-in-history-of-jewish-people.html">Gershom Scholem, <cite>Redemption Through Sin</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <hr/> So, what else to these stories have in common? In each, there is a childless widow who actively pursues her man. The gemara says: <blockquote lang=he><p>איהי בכל דהו ניחא לה כדריש לקיש; דאמר ר״ל: טב למיתב טן דו מלמיתב ארמלו.</p> <footer class=source>כתובות עה,א</footer></blockquote> Rabbi Shulman argues that in each of these stories the marriage is a form of חסד for a woman who could not otherwise be supported in the society of תנ״ך. This is certainly true for Tamar and Ruth. But Avigail is a rich, beautiful widow. She would surely have no problem finding a husband if she so desired. When David takes her, it is not a חסד to *her*. I would argue that each of these stories are a form of יבום which is a חסד is to their late husbands. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> כי ישבו אחים יחדו ומת אחד מהם ובן אין לו לא תהיה אשת המת החוצה לאיש זר; יבמה יבא עליה ולקחה לו לאשה ויבמה׃ <b>ו</b> והיה הבכור אשר תלד יקום על שם אחיו המת; ולא ימחה שמו מישראל׃ <b>ז</b> ואם לא יחפץ האיש לקחת את יבמתו; ועלתה יבמתו השערה אל הזקנים ואמרה מאן יבמי להקים לאחיו שם בישראל לא אבה יבמי׃ <b>ח</b> וקראו לו זקני עירו ודברו אליו; ועמד ואמר לא חפצתי לקחתה׃ <b>ט</b> ונגשה יבמתו אליו לעיני הזקנים וחלצה נעלו מעל רגלו וירקה בפניו; וענתה ואמרה ככה יעשה לאיש אשר לא יבנה את בית אחיו׃ <b>י</b> ונקרא שמו בישראל; בית חלוץ הנעל׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק כה</footer></blockquote> In the case of Yehuda, it is explicitly called יבום. In the case of Boaz, it is clear from the גאולה of Naomi's field that the goal was להקים שם המת: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ובעז עלה השער וישב שם והנה הגאל עבר אשר דבר בעז ויאמר סורה שבה פה פלני אלמני; ויסר וישב׃ <b>ב</b> ויקח עשרה אנשים מזקני העיר ויאמר שבו פה; וישבו׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר לגאל חלקת השדה אשר לאחינו לאלימלך; מכרה נעמי השבה משדה מואב׃ <b>ד</b> ואני אמרתי אגלה אזנך לאמר קנה נגד הישבים ונגד זקני עמי אם תגאל גאל ואם לא יגאל הגידה לי ואדע (ואדעה) כי אין זולתך לגאול ואנכי אחריך; ויאמר אנכי אגאל׃ <b>ה</b> ויאמר בעז ביום קנותך השדה מיד נעמי; ומאת רות המואביה אשת המת קנית להקים שם המת על נחלתו׃ <b>ו</b> ויאמר הגאל לא אוכל לגאול לי פן אשחית את נחלתי; גאל לך אתה את גאלתי כי לא אוכל לגאל׃ <b>ז</b> וזאת לפנים בישראל על הגאלה ועל התמורה לקים כל דבר שלף איש נעלו ונתן לרעהו; וזאת התעודה בישראל׃ <b>ח</b> ויאמר הגאל לבעז קנה לך; וישלף נעלו׃ <b>ט</b> ויאמר בעז לזקנים וכל העם עדים אתם היום כי קניתי את כל אשר לאלימלך ואת כל אשר לכליון ומחלון מיד נעמי׃ <b>י</b> וגם את רות המאביה אשת מחלון קניתי לי לאשה להקים שם המת על נחלתו ולא יכרת שם המת מעם אחיו ומשער מקומו; עדים אתם היום׃ <b>יא</b> ויאמרו כל העם אשר בשער והזקנים עדים; יתן ה׳ את האשה הבאה אל ביתך כרחל וכלאה אשר בנו שתיהם את בית ישראל ועשה חיל באפרתה וקרא שם בבית לחם׃ <b>יב</b> ויהי ביתך כבית פרץ אשר ילדה תמר ליהודה מן הזרע אשר יתן ה׳ לך מן הנערה הזאת׃ <b>יג</b> ויקח בעז את רות ותהי לו לאשה ויבא אליה; ויתן ה׳ לה הריון ותלד בן׃ ...<b>יז</b> ותקראנה לו השכנות שם לאמר ילד בן לנעמי; ותקראנה שמו עובד הוא אבי ישי אבי דוד׃ </p> <footer class=source>רות פרק ד</footer></blockquote> The gemara (בבא מציעא מז,א) explains that לפנים בישראל...לקים כל דבר wasn't specifically a shoe; that was chosen here to evoke the ceremony of חליצה. And in fact, the child, עובד, fills the role of יקום על שם אחיו המת: <blockquote lang=en><p>Coming back to Oved--within the context of <i lang=he>yibum</i>'s logic, he is less the son of Boaz than of the dead Machlon. The neighboring women were right when they declared, "A son [or, more generically, a descendant] has been born to <em>Naomi</em>"--Machlon's mother. Through the birth of Oved, Naomi's own child, Machlon, became a father. The child in a sense came from her.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Reflections-Shavuos-Megilas-Davidic-Kingship/dp/097691610X">Rabbi Moshe Eisemann, <cite>A Pearl in the Sand</cite></a>, p. 37</footer></blockquote> And in the case of David an Avigail, they also have a son. That son is named כלאב, which evokes *נבל*'s description as והוא כלבי, "he was a descendant of Caleb": <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b> ויולדו לדוד בנים בחברון; ויהי בכורו אמנון לאחינעם היזרעאלת׃ <b>ג</b> ומשנהו כלאב לאביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלי; והשלשי אבשלום בן מעכה בת תלמי מלך גשור׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק ג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>לעניות הבנתנו, הפרשה כולה היא מעין פרשת ייבום...בבית דוד, שאר בשרו של בעלה, תוסיף להיקרא ”אביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלי“. לבנה...תקרא כלאב--והוא יקום על שם בעלה המת, הנצר העיקרי לבית כלב...לא בגדה אביגיל, כשם שלא הרתה תמר כלת יהודה לזנונים. שתיהן הלכו להקים שם לבעליהן החטאים, שלא יימחה שמם מישראל.</p> <footer class=source>הרב יעקב מדן, <a href="http://old.herzog.ac.il/tvunot/fulltext/mega4_medan.pdf"><cite>אמר נבל בלבו אין אלהים</cite>, עמ׳ 44</a></footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang="he"><p>לדברינו אלה, כלאב הוא בן דוד הקם בייבום על שם נבל ועל נחלתו. </p> <footer class="source">שם, הערה 68</footer></blockquote> And what that means is that כלאב, of all the sons of David mentioned above, is never involved in the struggle for succession. He doesn't have the status of a royal prince; his legacy is that of נבל הכרמלי. <hr/> What does it mean, והיה הבכור אשר תלד יקום על שם אחיו? There is a halachic יבום, which applies only to the brother of dead, but there's clearly something deeper underlying that. Even before the Torah was given, it says וידע אונן כי לא לו יהיה הזרע. The בכור is seen as the child of the אחיו המת, and that is an act of supreme חסד. I would argue that the ancestors of מלכות ישראל needed to be able to express that חסד, to be able to give up a claim on one's own child. The reason is that the מלכות is inherited; a peaceful, lawful succession requires a dynasty (they hadn't yet invented elections): <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> כי תבא אל הארץ אשר ה׳ אלקיך נתן לך וירשתה וישבתה בה; ואמרת אשימה עלי מלך ככל הגוים אשר סביבתי׃ <b>טו</b> שום תשים עליך מלך אשר יבחר ה׳ אלהיך בו; מקרב אחיך תשים עליך מלך לא תוכל לתת עליך איש נכרי אשר לא אחיך הוא׃ ... <b>כ</b> לבלתי רום לבבו מאחיו ולבלתי סור מן המצוה ימין ושמאול למען יאריך ימים על ממלכתו הוא ובניו בקרב ישראל׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק יז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>הוא ובניו</em>: מגיד שאם בנו הגון למלכות, הוא קודם לכל אדם.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים יז:כ</footer></blockquote> But the fact that this authority is inherited does not mean it *belongs* to the king, the way personal property does.
