In the Tanach shiur, we are looking at the תהילים attributed to Moshe. The first one says so explicitly: {:he .lines} >תפלה למשה איש האלקים; אדנ־י מעון אתה היית לנו; בדר ודר׃ --תהילים צ:א That isn't a תפלה, per se; it is a statement of praise. The next psukim tell us that this perek is about תשובה, which makes it relevant to the upcoming ראש השנה: {:he .lines} ><b>ב</b> בטרם הרים ילדו ותחולל ארץ ותבל; ומעולם עד עולם אתה אל׃ <b>ג</b> תשב אנוש עד דכא; ותאמר שובו בני אדם׃ --תהילים פרק צ חז״ל tell us that the תפלה, the prayer, is in the last psukim: {:he .lines} ><b>טז</b> יראה אל עבדיך פעלך; והדרך על בניהם׃ <b>יז</b> ויהי נעם אדנ־י אלקינו עלינו; ומעשה ידינו כוננה עלינו; ומעשה ידינו כוננהו׃ --תהילים פרק צ And that gives the perek context in the life of Moshe: {:he} ><em>כוננהו</em>:...ושני פעמים ומעשה ידינו כוננהו; א' על מלאכת המשכן שבירכן לישראל והתפלל שתשרה שכינה במעשה ידיהם במשכן, ואחת שתהא ברכה במעשה ידיהם. --רש״י, תהילים צ:יז This was the prayer for the inauguration of the משכן, when Moshe prayed יראה אל עבדיך פעלך, that the שכינה would return to בני ישראל after they lost it as a result of חטא עגל הזהב. {:he} ><b>א</b> ויהי ביום השמיני קרא משה לאהרן ולבניו ולזקני ישראל׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר אל אהרן קח לך עגל בן בקר לחטאת ואיל לעלה תמימם; והקרב לפני ה׳׃...<b>כג</b> ויבא משה ואהרן אל אהל מועד ויצאו ויברכו את העם; וירא כבוד ה׳ אל כל העם׃ --ויקרא פרק ט {:he} ><em>ויצאו ויברכו את העם</em>: אמרו ”ויהי נעם ה' אלקינו עלינו“; יהי רצון שתשרה שכינה במעשה ידיכם. לפי שכל שבעת ימי המלואים שהעמידו משה למשכן ושמש בו ופרקו בכל יום לא שרתה בו שכינה, והיו ישראל נכלמים ואומרים למשה, משה רבנו, כל הטרח שטרחנו שתשרה שכינה בינינו ונדע שנתכפר לנו עון העגל, לכך אמר להם ”זה הדבר אשר צוה ה' תעשו וירא אליכם כבוד ה'“—אהרן אחי כדאי וחשוב ממני, שעל ידי קרבנותיו ועבודתו תשרה שכינה בכם ותדעו שהמקום בחר בו. --רש״י, ויקרא ט:כג But that is only the last two psukim. What about the rest of the perek? And what happened to the תשובה theme? The following is my hypothesis. If the last psukim are about the end of the ceremony, then the first psukim must be about what came before. Let's look at that ceremony in detail: {:he} ><b>ז</b> ויאמר משה אל אהרן קרב אל המזבח ועשה את חטאתך ואת עלתך וכפר בעדך ובעד העם; ועשה את קרבן העם וכפר בעדם כאשר צוה ה׳׃ <b>ח</b> ויקרב אהרן אל המזבח; וישחט את עגל החטאת אשר לו׃ <b>ט</b> ויקרבו בני אהרן את הדם אליו ויטבל אצבעו בדם ויתן על קרנות המזבח; ואת הדם יצק אל יסוד המזבח׃ <b>י</b> ואת החלב ואת הכלית ואת היתרת מן הכבד מן החטאת הקטיר המזבחה; כאשר צוה ה׳ את משה׃ <b>יא</b> ואת הבשר ואת העור שרף באש מחוץ למחנה׃ <b>יב</b> וישחט את העלה; וימצאו בני אהרן אליו את הדם ויזרקהו על המזבח סביב׃ <b>יג</b> ואת העלה המציאו אליו לנתחיה ואת הראש; ויקטר על המזבח׃ <b>יד</b> וירחץ את הקרב ואת הכרעים; ויקטר על העלה המזבחה׃ <b>טו</b> ויקרב את קרבן העם; ויקח את שעיר החטאת אשר לעם וישחטהו ויחטאהו כראשון׃ <b> טז</b> ויקרב את העלה; ויעשה כמשפט׃ <b>יז</b> ויקרב את המנחה וימלא כפו ממנה ויקטר על המזבח מלבד עלת הבקר׃ <b>יח</b> וישחט את השור ואת האיל זבח השלמים אשר לעם; וימצאו בני אהרן את הדם אליו ויזרקהו על המזבח סביב׃ <b>יט</b> ואת החלבים מן השור; ומן האיל האליה והמכסה והכלית ויתרת הכבד׃ <b>כ</b> וישימו את החלבים על החזות; ויקטר החלבים המזבחה׃ <b>כא</b> ואת החזות ואת שוק הימין הניף אהרן תנופה לפני ה׳ כאשר צוה משה׃ --ויקרא פרק ט And then the dramatic conclusion: {:he} ><b>כב</b> וישא אהרן את ידו אל העם ויברכם; וירד מעשת החטאת והעלה והשלמים׃ <b>כג</b> ויבא משה ואהרן אל אהל מועד ויצאו ויברכו את העם; וירא כבוד ה׳ אל כל העם׃ <b>כד</b> ותצא אש מלפני ה׳ ותאכל על המזבח את העלה ואת החלבים; וירא כל העם וירנו ויפלו על פניהם׃ --ויקרא פרק ט It starts with וישא אהרן את ידו אל העם ויברכם. That's not our ברכה of ויהי נעם; that is what we call נשיאת כפיים, or ברכת כהנים. {:he} ><em>ויברכם</em>: ברכת כהנים—יברכך, יאר, ישא. --רש״י, ויקרא ט:כב Rashi feels it necessary to tell us that when Aharon descended, he descended from the מזבח: {:he} ><em>וירד</em>: מעל המזבח. --רש״י, ויקרא ט:כב Where else would אהרן be? Rashi is telling us that the text is emphasizing that אהרן's ירידה was from the מזבח. So what? {:he} ><em>ירד מעשות וגו׳</em>: כך הענין: שאהרן העלה הכל על המזבח. ועדיין לא בא האש. והיו מונחים צבורים זע״ז. --העמק דבר, ויקרא ט:כב Now, the fire from the קדש הקדשים doesn't come until two psukim later, after אהרן has come down. So we have this picture of אהרן on top of the מזבח; he's set up the first sacrifices that he will offer (the previous week, it's been his brother doing everything), he turns to the people and blesses them, and then...nothing. That's not how it is supposed to work: {:he} ><b>א</b> וככלות שלמה להתפלל והאש ירדה מהשמים ותאכל העלה והזבחים; וכבוד ה׳ מלא את הבית׃...<b>ג</b> וכל בני ישראל ראים ברדת האש וכבוד ה׳ על הבית; ויכרעו אפים ארצה על הרצפה וישתחוו והדות לה׳ כי טוב כי לעולם חסדו׃ --דברי הימים ב פרק ז That last sounds familiar; in our perek, when the fire finally does come down, וירא כל העם וירנו ויפלו על פניהם. But it *doesn't* come down when אהרן blesses the people. וירד מעשת החטאת והעלה והשלמים is אהרן's *failure*. This was to be the return of the כבוד ה׳ in the fire from heaven that had last been experienced at מעמד הר סיני and lost with מעשה העגל. And nothing happened. But what does אהרן himself do after he trudges down the ramp, with no divine fire in sight? Rashbam explains why the next pasuk is ויבא משה ואהרן אל אהל מועד: {:he} ><em>ויבא משה ואהרן אל אהל מועד</em>: להתפלל שתרד האש. --רשב״ם, ויקרא ט:כג So that is why Moshe brings Aharon into the משכן--to pray for him. {:he} ><em>ויבא משה ואהרן וגו׳</em>: כיון שראה אהרן שקרבו כל הקרבנות ונעשו כל המעשים ולא ירדה שכינה לישראל, היה מצטער ואומר: יודע אני שכעס הקב"ה עלי ובשבילי לא ירדה שכינה לישראל! אמר לו למשה: משה אחי, כך עשית לי שנכנסתי ונתבישתי? מיד נכנס משה עמו ובקשו רחמים וירדה שכינה לישראל. --רש״י, ויקרא ט:כג אהרן *knows* why he failed; it's all his fault, from the very beginning. {:he} >ויגף ה׳ את העם על אשר עשו את העגל אשר עשה אהרן׃ --שמות לב:לה אהרן didn't want to do the עבודה at all. He went into this ceremony knowing he would fail: {:he} > <em> [ויאמר משה אל אהרן] קרב אל המזבח</em>: שהיה אהרן בוש וירא לגשת, אמר לו משה, למה אתה בוש? לכך נבחרת. --רש״י, ויקרא ט:ז So I would propose that the bulk of תפלה למשה is the text of Moshe's prayer on behalf of Aharon. It speaks of how ה׳ knows all our sins: {:he} >שתה עונתינו לנגדך; עלמנו למאור פניך׃ --תהילים צ:ח But, Moshe says, we deserve clemency because You, ה׳, are infinite and our lives are so limited. {:he} ><b>ד</b> כי אלף שנים בעיניך כיום אתמול כי יעבר;<br/> ואשמורה בלילה׃<br/> ...<b>ז</b> כי כלינו באפך; ובחמתך נבהלנו׃<br/> ...<b>י</b>ימי שנותינו בהם שבעים שנה ואם בגבורת שמונים שנה <br/> ורהבם עמל ואון;<br/> כי גז חיש ונעפה׃ --תהילים פרק צ Therefore, please teach us to count our days, to make our limited days count. {:he} >למנות ימינו כן הודע; ונבא לבב חכמה׃ --תהילים צ:יב And so You, ה׳, should turn from your anger even if we have not returned to You: {:he} ><b>יג</b> שובה ה׳ עד מתי; והנחם על עבדיך׃<br/> <b>יד</b> שבענו בבקר חסדך; ונרננה ונשמחה בכל ימינו׃<br/> <b>טו</b> שמחנו כימות עניתנו; שנות ראינו רעה׃ --תהילים פרק צ You say "שובו בני אדם"; we say "שובה ה׳...והנחם על עבדיך". >To err is human; to forgive, divine. --Alexander Pope, [An Essay on Criticism: Part 2](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44897/an-essay-on-criticism-part-2) *That* is the תפלה למשה. It certainly fits the context that we are assuming here, and the perek continues with part two, when Moshe and Aharon come out and bless the people: יראה אל עבדיך and the וירא כבוד ה׳ אל כל העם as we've said, and the divine fire comes down and consumes the offerings. But why was this necessary at all? ה׳ had already forgiven בני ישראל for חטא העגל; that's why building the משכן was possible in the first place. {:he} ><b>ט</b> ויאמר אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך אדנ־י ילך נא אדני בקרבנו; כי עם קשה ערף הוא וסלחת לעוננו ולחטאתנו ונחלתנו׃ <b>י</b> ויאמר הנה אנכי כרת ברית נגד כל עמך אעשה נפלאת אשר לא נבראו בכל הארץ ובכל הגוים; וראה כל העם אשר אתה בקרבו את מעשה ה׳ כי נורא הוא אשר אני עשה עמך׃ --שמות פרק לד {:he} ><em>[ויאמר אל אהרן] קח לך עגל</em>: להודיע שכפר לו הקב"ה על ידי עגל זה על מעשה העגל שעשה. --רש"י, ויקרא ט:ב I propose that while the תפלה למשה was addressed to ה׳, it was intended for *אהרן*. Moshe took Aharon with him to go into the משכן to daven, because he wanted Aharon to hear him. ה׳ *had* forgiven Aharon, but he had not forgiven himself. He expected to fail before he even started: היה אהרן בוש וירא לגשת. He could not let go of his own sin. {:he} >היה אהרן רואה את המזבח כתבנית שור והיה מתירא ממנו. אמר לו משה "אחי, ממנו אתה מתירא?! הגס דעתך וקרב אליו!", לכך נאמר "קרב אל המזבח". --ספרא, שמיני, מכילתא דמילואים ב:ח And I think that is an under-appreciated part of תשובה. We have to accept forgiveness. {:he} >תנו רבנן: עבירות שהתודה עליהן יום הכפורים זה, לא יתודה עליהן יום הכפורים אחר. ואם שנה בהן--צריך להתודות יום הכפורים אחר. ואם לא שנה בהן, וחזר והתודה--עליהן עליו הכתוב אומר (משלי כו:יא): כְּכֶלֶב שָׁב עַל קֵאוֹ כְּסִיל שׁוֹנֶה בְאִוַּלְתּוֹ. --יומא פו,ב >Should a person then "forgive and forget" himself? That depends. On the one hand, there is an advantage to always keeping our past misdeeds in mind. A person who made a mistake in the past needs particular vigilance from falling into his past ways...On the other hand, excessive attention to past misdeeds can be an obstacle to putting them behind us. > ...Some Hasidic works draw particular attention to this problem. While the Talmud tells us (Nidda 30b) that each person is warned to always be like a wicked person in his own eyes , Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, one of the earliest Hasidic masters, writes (Book of Tanyia chapter 1): "This needs to be understood properly, for the Mishna (Mishnah Avot 2:13) tells us, 'Don't be wicked before yourself' [וְאַל תְּהִי רָשָׁע בִּפְנֵי עַצְמְךָ], and furthermore if a person sees himself as wicked he will become saddened and unable to serve God with joy". Rav Zvi Elimelech of Dinov, a slightly later leader, wrote (Benei Yissachar Tishrei 7:9) that when one dwells on past misdeeds it can have the effect of making the expression of regret routine and thus insincere.
