This week's parsha includes the famous burning bush: {:he} ><b>א</b> ומשה היה רעה את צאן יתרו חתנו כהן מדין; וינהג את הצאן אחר המדבר ויבא אל הר האלקים חרבה׃ <b>ב</b> וירא מלאך ה׳ אליו בלבת אש מתוך הסנה; וירא והנה הסנה בער באש והסנה איננו אכל׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר משה אסרה נא ואראה את המראה הגדל הזה; מדוע לא יבער הסנה׃ <b>ד</b> וירא ה׳ כי סר לראות; ויקרא אליו אלקים מתוך הסנה ויאמר משה משה ויאמר הנני׃ <b>ה</b> ויאמר אל תקרב הלם; של נעליך מעל רגליך כי המקום אשר אתה עומד עליו אדמת קדש הוא׃ <b>ו</b> ויאמר אנכי אלקי אביך אלקי אברהם אלקי יצחק ואלקי יעקב; ויסתר משה פניו כי ירא מהביט אל האלקים׃ <b>ז</b> ויאמר ה׳ ראה ראיתי את עני עמי אשר במצרים; ואת צעקתם שמעתי מפני נגשיו כי ידעתי את מכאביו׃ <b>ח</b> וארד להצילו מיד מצרים ולהעלתו מן הארץ ההוא אל ארץ טובה ורחבה אל ארץ זבת חלב ודבש אל מקום הכנעני והחתי והאמרי והפרזי והחוי והיבוסי׃ <b>ט</b> ועתה הנה צעקת בני ישראל באה אלי; וגם ראיתי את הלחץ אשר מצרים לחצים אתם׃ <b>י</b> ועתה לכה ואשלחך אל פרעה; והוצא את עמי בני ישראל ממצרים׃ --שמות פרק ג Why was Moshe chosen for this mission? We all know the aggadah that connects the opening phrase to his care for others: {:he} ><em>ומשה היה רעה</em>:...ואף משה לא בחנו הקדוש ברוך הוא אלא בצאן. אמרו רבותינו: כשהיה משה רבינו עליו השלום רועה צאנו של יתרו במדבר, ברח ממנו גדי, ורץ אחריו עד שהגיע לחסית. כיון שהגיע לחסית, נזדמנה לו ברכה של מים, ועמד הגדי לשתות. כיון שהגיע משה אצלו, אמר: אני לא הייתי יודע שרץ היית מפני צמא, עיף אתה, הרכיבו על כתפו והיה מהלך. אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא: יש לך רחמים לנהג צאנו של בשר ודם, כך חייך אתה תרעה צאני ישראל, הוי: ”ומשה היה רועה“. --שמות רבה ב:ב He was a merciful shepherd, so he became the shepherd for כלל ישראל: {:he} >נחית כצאן עמך ביד משה ואהרן׃ --תהילים עז:כא And in fact we see this רחמים from the text itself from the three preceding pericopes: Moshe saves the Israelite slave, intervenes in the fight and saves Yitro's daughters. But that's not what the text says: וירא ה׳ כי סר לראות; ויקרא אליו אלקים.‎ ה׳ calls him because he went to look at the bush. That doesn't seem like a big deal. Sforno points out that ואראה doesn't mean "to look at"; it means to understand. Moshe understood that something deep was going on here. {:he} ><em>אסורה נא ואראה</em>: אתבונן ואראה. --ספורנו, שמות ג:ג {:he} ><em>וירא ה' כי סר לראות</em>: להתבונן בדבר. > <em>ויקרא אליו אלקים</em>: להודיעו, כאמרם ז"ל ”בא לטהר מסייעין אותו“. כענין (שמות יט:ג) וּמֹשֶׁה עָלָה אֶל הָאֱלֹקִים וַיִּקְרָא אֵלָיו ה׳ מִן הָהָר. --ספורנו, שמות ג:ד The fact that he was able to see that this wasn't an incipient forest fire, but instead a sign from G-d, meant that he was ready for this calling. {:he} >והיטב דברו בזה האחרונים שקריאה *ל*פלוני מורה שהיה הקרוא רחוק ממנו ושולח אחריו שיבא אליו…אבל בכל מקום שאומר קרא *אל* פלוני, מורה שהקרוא עומד לפני הקורא או קרוב אליו והקריאה הוא דרך כבוד וחבה שמזמינהו אל הדבור, וכלל זה בדוק בכל מקום. --מלבי״ם, ויקרא א:א <figure lang="en"><blockquote lang="en"> <dl> <dt>calling</dt> <dd>a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence.</dd> </dl> </blockquote> <figcaption class="source"><span><a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/calling" data-decodedhref="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/calling">Merriam-Webster, <cite>calling</cite>, definition 1</a></span></figcaption></figure> Rav Soloveitchik says that this didn't happen suddenly. As Rambam notes ([Guide for the Perplexed, II:32](https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Guide_for_the_Perplexed_(Friedlander)/Part_II/Chapters#CHAPTER_XXXII), prophecy requires "preparation and perfection of moral and rational faculties". >[ומשה היה רעה...<br/> וינהג את הצאן אחר המדבר<br/> ויבא אל הר האלקים חרבה]<br/> <em>and he came to the mountain of G-d, to Horeb</em>: The phrase in the beginning of the verse, ומשה היה רעה, is in the grammatical form known as a participle. If it were to be simply translated as "and Moses shepherded", that is, in past tense, the phrase would then read ומשה רָעָה. The grammatical construction of the phrase provides information about Moses' occupation during those many silent years of /hester panim/. Moses was a /ro’eh tzon/, a shepherd for a period of many years... > lf the first two phrases of the verse are interpreted as participles, the third phrase and final phrase must similarly be interpreted to remain consistent. ויבא אל הר האלקים חרבה: over many years, as Moses led his flocks of sheep, he alone would regularly visit Mount Horeb. [W]henever he came into the desert he would leave the sheep in the charge of his assistants and go to the mountain of G-d. --Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, [_Chumash Mesoras Harav_](https://oupress.org/product/chumash-mesoras-harav-set/), /Shemos/ 3:1 The Netziv says something similar: {:he} ><em>אחר המדבר</em>: ”במדבר“ מיבעי אלא המשמעות שהיה משתדל להנהיג במקום שהוא יותר מדבר. ונמשך אחר מקום מדבר. והוא כדי שיוכל לההבודד ולחקור אחר אלקות וכדומה. --העמק דבר, שמות ג:ג ><em>Let me turn now</em>: Rashi comments on these two words: [אָסוּרָה מִכָּאן לְהִתְקָרֵב שָׁם]. What did Rashi add by that sentence? Rashi explains that Moses was not referring to moving his physical location. He was stepping aside from a worldview and embracing a new philosophy of life, into a different frame of reference. "Let me step aside from certain categories in which I used to think, and adopt other categories, other concepts, other ideas". Similarly, at the /Akeidah/, Abraham told Eliezer and Yishmael (בראשית כב:ה)‎ [שְׁבוּ לָכֶם פֹּה עִם הַחֲמוֹר וַאֲנִי וְהַנַּעַר נֵלְכָה עַד כֹּה]. Abraham was not referring to geographical distance; he was referring to a differing worldview. You remain with your philosophy, the philosophy of the donkey...But there is another worldview--the covenantal logic...This is exactly what Moshes said. אָסֻרָה נָּא...Let me examine this great sight. He instinctively felt that something unusual was transpiring in front of him. --Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, [_Chumash Mesoras Harav_](https://oupress.org/product/chumash-mesoras-harav-set/), /Shemos/ 3:3 So he was in a position where he was able to hear ה׳'s voice. And when that happened, וירא ה׳ כי סר לראות, he personally was called: {:he} ><em>וירא מלאך ה' אליו</em>: במראה הנבואה, כי אמנם כאשר יגלו המלאכים בדמות אנשים בלתי נבואה, כענין לאברהם וללוט ולבלעם ולזולתם, לא יאמר עליהם וַיֵרָא, אבל יאמר עליהם וַיַרְא, כמו (בראשית יח:ב) וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה שְׁלֹשָׁה אֲנָשִׁים ,(בראשית יט:א) וַיַּרְא לוֹט,(במדבר כב:לא) וַיַּרְא אֶת מַלְאַךְ ה׳ נִצָּב בַּדֶּרֶךְ. --ספורנו, שמות ג:ב {:he} ><em>מלאך ה׳ אליו</em>: ביחוד לו. כי היו עמו עוד משרתים ועבדי יתרו, אבל לא התראה הענין רק אליו. וכדאיתא בריש מס׳ יומא ”קול לו“ קול אליו הוא שמע ואחרים לא שמעו. וכן כאן המראה הלז היה רק אליו. --העמק דבר, שמות ג:ב ---- So Moshe has both: בעל חסד and intellectual connection to the divine. But note the chronology. ה׳ reveals Himself: ויאמר אנכי אלקי אביך אלקי אברהם אלקי יצחק ואלקי יעקב, then ויסתר משה פניו, and only then does Moshe get his mission: ראה ראיתי את עני עמי אשר במצרים. And we should also note that the names of G-d, י־ה־ו־ה and אלקים, keep flipping back and forth: ה׳ sees that Moshe is ready, and אלקים appears to him, then Moshe is afraid מהביט אל האלקים, and then ה׳ gives him the mission. {:he} >דאמר רבי שמואל בר נחמני, אמר רבי יונתן: בשכר שלש זכה לשלש. בשכר וַיַּסְתֵּר מֹשֶׁה פָּנָיו, זכה לקלסתר פנים. בשכר כִּי יָרֵא, זכה ל־(שמות לד:ל) וַיִּירְאוּ מִגֶּשֶׁת אֵלָיו. בשכר מֵהַבִּיט, זכה ל־(במדבר יב:ח) וּתְמֻנַת ה׳ יַבִּיט. --ברכות ז,א ><em>And Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look toward G-d</em>:...Initially, it is difficult to fathom R. Yonasan's opinion. Why was Moses' hiding his face considered such an exalted act? > The fire of the bush was burning. The infinite light called to him. The Master of the Universe waited, yet Moses' face remained hidden. > The Master of the Universe was ready to reveal himself to Moses in His true absolute entirety. Moses had the opportunity to experience all that was hidden, to understand with clarity the ways of G-d, His justice, and how He leads creation. All questions would be answered, every /teiku/ (open question) resolved. Instead, Moses hid his face. He did not want all questions answered and all mysteries to disappear. > Moses trembled in the face of complete knowledge. What frightened him? Moses was afraid that had he not turned away he would lose the attribute of /chesed/, the feeling of empathy and love regarding his fellow. He was afraid to delve too deeply into G-ds attribute of justice, because if he were to understand this attribute completely, he would recognize that in truth there was no evil in the world. He would know that the pain man experiences is only for his good. He would see clearly (דברים לב:ד)‎ הַצּוּר תָּמִים פָּעֳלוֹ כִּי כָל דְּרָכָיו מִשְׁפָּט...Were Moses to see the world in its entirety, death, sickness, poverty, suffering and loneliness would all appear good, with purpose and significance. > If he had this knowledge, Moses could not perform /chesed/ with a poor person, because he would understand why poverty was appropriate for the person. He could not have mercy on sick people, because he would have complete understanding of why G-d inflicts sickness and the objective of such pain. Under such conditions, he would have no understanding or sympathy with the sinner, and could not entreat G-d on their behalf. He would see with clarity the righteousness of G-d's judgment. Moses would not be able to pray on behalf of the people because he would perceive that the very request was absurd. > Mercy and love have their basis in man's lack of understanding, in his intellectual limits, in his childlike simplicity...Do not ask, "Why should I cure someone whom G-d smites with sickness?" For man, sickness is something evil, and evil must be fought. /Chesed/ is bestowed on man with a heavy price—lack of understanding. Moses had the choice to pursue knowledge and lose /chesed/, or remain without knowledge and merit /chesed/. He chose the latter. So great was his love for Israel that he sacrificed the most sublime of human strivings, the knowledge of G-d. --Rabbi Joseph B. Only ה׳, with מדת הרחמים, would. Moshe had the opportunity to be Rambam's perfect philosopher-prophet, but he overcame that to become the שליח of ה׳:‎ יש לך רחמים לנהג צאנו של בשר ודם, כך חייך אתה תרעה צאני ישראל.
