Rav Yehudah Copperman has a [question](https://www.bneyzion.co.il/מאגר-השיעורים-והמאמרים/תורה/במדבר/קדושת-פשוטו-של-מקרא-במדבר/שני-כתובים-המכחישים-זה-את-זה) about this week's parsha: {:he} ><b>ט</b> המעט מכם כי הבדיל אלקי ישראל אתכם מעדת ישראל להקריב אתכם אליו לעבד את עבדת משכן ה׳ ולעמד לפני העדה לשרתם׃ <b>י</b> ויקרב אתך ואת כל אחיך בני לוי אתך; ובקשתם גם כהנה׃ <b>יא</b> לָכֵ֗ן אַתָּה֙ וְכׇל־עֲדָ֣תְךָ֔ הַנֹּעָדִ֖ים עַל־ה֑׳ ואהרן מה הוא כי תלינו עליו׃ --במדבר פרק טז I put the /trope/ in the last pasuk to point out that I've always translated it wrong, as "therefore you and all your assembly, who are opposing Hashem", with a sort of aposiopesis as the consequence of that "therefore". But there is a טִפְּחָ֖א under הַנֹּעָדִ֖ים which is a comma, a pause, so the pasuk really means "therefore, you and all your assembly are opposing Hashem" as Rashi says: "You are opposing Hashem, not me". {:he} ><em>לכן</em>: בשביל כך אתה וכל עדתך הנעדים אתך, על ה', כי בשליחותו עשיתי לתת כהנה לאהרן, ולא לנו הוא המחלקת הזה. --רש״י, במדבר טז:יא Seforno has a subtly different translation, "Therefore, you and your assembly *shall be* on Hashem"; it's not my fight. {:he} ><em>לכן אתה וכל עדתך הנועדים</em>: אני אומר לכם: ”על ה'“. דעו שאני משליך על ה' יהבי שיתבע הוא עלבונינו ולא אתקומם אני עליכם כלל. --ספורנו, שם Seforno's expression of משליך על ה' יהבי is from תהילים, meaning "Let Hashem deal with your problems": {:he} >הַשְׁלֵךְ עַל ה׳ יְהָבְךָ וְהוּא יְכַלְכְּלֶךָ; לֹא יִתֵּן לְעוֹלָם מוֹט לַצַּדִּיק׃ --תהלים נה:כג Moshe doesn't want to get involved in מחלוקת. Similarly, when he approaches דתן and אבירם: {:he} >וישלח משה לקרא לדתן ולאבירם בני אליאב... --במדבר טז:יב {:he} ><em>וישלח משה וגו׳</em>: מכאן שאין מחזיקין במחלקת, שהיה משה מחזר אחריהם להשלימם בדברי שלום. --רש״י, שם But, three psukim later, his attitude changes: {:he} >ויחר למשה מאד ויאמר אל ה׳ אל תפן אל מנחתם; לא חמור אחד מהם נשאתי ולא הרעתי את אחד מהם׃ --במדבר טז:טו {:he} ><em>אל תפן אל מנחתם</em>:...איני מוחל על עלבוני. --ספורנו, שם What changed? Clearly, something in the intervening psukim was much worse than the original argument against Moshe and Aharon: {:he} ><b>יב</b>... ויאמרו לא נעלה׃ <b>יג</b> המעט כי העליתנו מארץ זבת חלב ודבש להמיתנו במדבר; כי תשתרר עלינו גם השתרר׃ <b>יד</b> אף לא אל ארץ זבת חלב ודבש הביאתנו ותתן לנו נחלת שדה וכרם; העיני האנשים ההם תנקר לא נעלה׃ --במדבר פרק טז Rav Copperman offers two explanations. We will focus on his second, looking at ותתן לנו נחלת שדה וכרם. Rashi explains that there is an implied "אף לא" in front of that, from the beginning of the pasuk. {:he} ><em>ותתן לנו</em>: הדבר מוסב על "לא" האמור למעלה, כלומר לא הביאותנו *ולא* נתת לנו נחלת שדה וכרם. --רש״י, במדבר טז:יד But Seforno says the ותתן לנו נחלת שדה וכרם is sarcastic; "we're going to remain here in the wilderness for the next generation; look at the wonderful fields and vinyards you have given us!" {:he} >ודבריך הם כאלו נתת לנו בה נחלת שדה וכרם, בצוותך מצות התלויות בארץ, ואמרת לא תכלה פאת שדך ופרט כרמך, כאלו כבר היתה שלנו והיו לנו בה שדה וכרם. --ספורנו, שם Ramban says *that* was the real problem with דתן and אבירם: the sarcastic mocking. {:he} >דתן ואבירם היו חייבים יותר שהיו (דברי הימים ב לו:טז) מַלְעִבִים בְּמַלְאֲכֵי הָאֱלֹקִים וּבוֹזִים דְּבָרָיו וּמִתַּעְתְּעִים בִּנְבִאָיו. --רמב״ן, במדבר יז"ו The problem with sarcasm is that it destroys any discussion without reference to the merits of the argument. {:he} > בליצנות אחד ובשחוק קטן יפיל האדם מעליו ריבוי גדול מן ההתעוררות וההתפעלות מה שהלב מתעורר ומתפעל בעצמו מדי ראותו או שומעו ענינים שיעירוהו אל החשבון והפשפוש במעשים. > בכח הליצנות יפיל הכל לארץ ולא יעשה בו רושם כלל. ולא מפני חולשת הענינים ולא מפני חסרון הבנת הלב, אלא מפני כח הלצון ההורס כל עניני המוסר והיראה. --מסילת ישרים ה Rabbi Frand offers a משל (I would read this only as a משל; I don't know if Honda actually destroyed the emu industry): >Recently [writes Rabbi Frand in 1997] entrepreneurs in Texas have begun raising emus in the hope they would replace beef in the American diet...Emu meat is low in cholesterol, high in protein...This was such a promising industry that a pair of breeding emus sold for $45,000. > ...Honda Motors was producing a commercial to promote its Accord automobile. In the commercial...a young man was faced with many career choices...But when it came to choosing an automobile, there really were no choices other than the Honda Accord. > To catch the attention of the public, the commercial mockingly portrayed one loser profession after another...[including] emu farming. Imagine, some people think emu meat will replace beef. Only hicks from Texas, the commercial implied, could have such a ridiculous idea. > The commercial was, of course, not intended as an attack on the fledgling emu-farming industry...But believe it or not, this commercial destroyed the emu-farming industry. Within a short time, a pair of breeding emus was selling for $500... > One line of /bittul/, as a put-down is called in Hebrew, can wipe out years of effort. --Rabbi Yissocher Frand, _Emus, Hondas, and Cynicism_, in [_Listen to Your Messages_](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781578191390.html), pp. 33-34 The truth is, Jews love sarcasm. It goes way back: {:he} >ויאמרו אל משה המבלי אין קברים במצרים לקחתנו למות במדבר; מה זאת עשית לנו להוציאנו ממצרים׃ --שמות יד:יא And I'm as guilty as anyone. I'd like to think my sarcasm is self-deprecating humor and I'm not putting anyone else down, but my kids will give me מוסר when I've gone too far. Sarcasm is so ingrained into Jewish culture that it's impossible to root it out; even our greatest נביאים get sarcastic: {:he} >ויהי בצהרים ויהתל בהם אליהו ויאמר קראו בקול גדול כי אלהים הוא כי שיח וכי שיג לו וכי דרך לו; אולי ישן הוא ויקץ׃ --מלכים א יח:כז The reason is that it's not always bad: {:he} >אמר רב נחמן: כל ליצנותא אסירא חוץ מליצנותא דעבודת כוכבים דשריא, דכתיב (ישעיהו מו:א-ב) כָּרַע בֵּל קֹרֵס נְבוֹ...קָרְסוּ כָרְעוּ יַחְדָּו לֹא יָכְלוּ מַלֵּט מַשָּׂא. --סנהדרין סג,ב >We can lock /lashon hara/ away in the forbidden zone, because we are *never* allowed to speak /lashon hara/. We can lock dishonesty away in a forbidden zone, because we are never allowed to lie. We can lock sycophantic flattery away in a forbidden zone, because it is always forbidden. But we cannot do the same for cynicism. We cannot say, "Never be a cynic". It is simply not true. From time to time, you have to be a cynic. Once you've let the genie out of the bottle, though, it's hard to push him back in. --Rabbi Yissocher Frand, _Emus, Hondas, and Cynicism_, in [_Listen to Your Messages_](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781578191390.html), p. 41 {:he} ><b>ג</b> והלא ברור הוא דהתיר זה של ליצנות לאמר הוא בכל פרטיו של צד הרע, דודאי מותר להתלוצץ מכל משהו של רע, וכל בחינת עול... > <b>ה</b> הנה התבאר לנו, כי הגדרה של ליצנות היא הריסת בנין החשיבות...ליצנות סתם היא המצאת זלזול לשם ריבוי הזלזול בעולם. אבל ליצנותא דעבודה זרה היא המצאת זלזול לשם ריבוי חשיבות בעולם. --פחד יצחק פורים, מאמר א I tell my teen patients (and their parents), "Rolling your eyes is your superpower". Being able to say "whatever" to peer pressure and the stress of modern adolescence allows them to establish their own identity, and to make good choices when all around them are making bad choices. But the hard part is realizing that sarcasm is a weapon, not a tool. It destroys; it doesn't build. It is saying, "this whole discussion has no validity; I have no interest in hearing what you have to say". Sometimes that's necessary. But it's never good. That's what got Moshe so upset. If they truly wanted to be more involved in עבודת ה׳, if they meant (במדבר טז:ג)‎ כל העדה כלם קדשים ובתוכם ה׳, then Moshe is all for that: (במדבר יא:כט)‎ ומי יתן כל עם ה׳ נביאים, כי יתן ה׳ את רוחו עליהם. Moshe doesn't consider that an insult. But when they start getting sarcastic, it's clear this is an attack, not a dialog. In פרשת קרח, we always quote the Mishna: {:he} >כל מחלוקת שהיא לשם שמיים, סופה להתקיים; ושאינה לשם שמיים, אין סופה להתקיים. איזו היא מחלוקת שהיא לשם שמיים, זו מחלוקת הלל ושמאי; ושאינה לשם שמיים, זו מחלוקת קורח ועדתו. --משנה אבות ה:יז We usually understand לשם שמים to mean "for the sake of what's right", but Bartenura says it means "for the sake of truth": {:he} > וְהַמַּחֲלֹקֶת שֶׁהִיא לְשֵׁם שָׁמַיִם, הַתַּכְלִית וְהַסּוֹף הַמְבֻקָּשׁ מֵאוֹתָהּ מַחֲלֹקֶת לְהַשִּׂיג הָאֱמֶת, וְזֶה מִתְקַיֵּם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ מִתּוֹךְ הַוִּכּוּחַ יִתְבָּרֵר הָאֱמֶת. --ברטנורא, שם A מחלוקת שאינה לשם שמים is one where you are looking for victory. A מחלוקת לשם שמים is one where you are looking to determine the truth, and listening to your opponent is a critical part of that. And there is a "tell" that lets *you* know whether your disagreement is a מחלוקת לשם שמים, a מַחֲלֹקֶת לְהַשִּׂיג הָאֱמֶת, or not. If you're using sarcasm, it's not a disagreement, it's an attack. It may be necessary to attack, but don't lie to yourself about what you are trying to do.
