I just got a new book, Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Schwartz's [_From the Waters of the Shiloach_](https://mosaicapress.com/product/from-the-waters-of-the-shiloach/), a collection of essays on the parsha based on the מי השלוח. The מי השלוח was published in 1860 from the works of the first Izbitzer Rebbe, Mordechai Yosef Leiner, by his grandson, the first Radzyner Rebbe. The philosophy of Izbitze chassidut emphasized the importance of the individual, and that all of one's actions are a fulfillment of G-d's will. {:he} ><em>ותכחש שרה לאמר לא צחקתי</em>: עומק הענין בזה, כי מה דאיתא בגמרא (ברכות לג,ב) ”הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים“ הוא רק לפי גבול תפיסת שכל האדם, אבל באמת הכל בידי שמים *ואף יראת שמים* ורק בעוה"ז הסתיר הש"י דרכו. --מי השלוח, חלק א, ספר בראשית, לך לך As the Izbitzer's own rebbe, the Kotzker, [said](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menachem_Mendel_of_Kotzk#Some_of_the_Kotzker's_sayings), “Not all that is said need be written, not all that is written need be published”, and the Radzyner realized that pubishing this would be controversial: >Though I am aware that in a number of instances the words of the /Mei ha-Shiloah/ are difficult for the untrained ear to bear, I have only gathered his teaching for the sake of our intimates who understand their true value. --R. It's an opening for antinomianism in chassidic dress. >It is therefore no surprise that contemporary Jewish Renewal, a movement that, in effect, combines liberal religious critique, neo-Sabbatean religious reform, and Hasidic pietism, views itself as the spiritual inheritor of these Hasidic texts. Rabbi Schwartz brings the accounting of the silver in the משכן: {:he} ><b>כה</b> וכסף פקודי העדה מאת ככר; ואלף ושבע מאות וחמשה ושבעים שקל בשקל הקדש׃ <b>כו</b> בקע לגלגלת מחצית השקל בשקל הקדש לכל העבר על הפקדים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לשש מאות אלף ושלשת אלפים וחמש מאות וחמשים׃ <b>כז</b> ויהי מאת ככר הכסף לצקת את אדני הקדש ואת אדני הפרכת; מאת אדנים למאת הככר ככר לאדן׃ <b>כח</b> ואת האלף ושבע המאות וחמשה ושבעים עשה ווים לעמודים; וצפה ראשיהם וחש אתם׃ --שמות פרק לח The מצווה of מחצית השקל of course comes from פרשת כי תשא: {:he} > <b>יג</b> זה יתנו כל העבר על הפקדים מחצית השקל בשקל הקדש; עשרים גרה השקל מחצית השקל תרומה לה׳׃ <b>יד</b> כל העבר על הפקדים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה יתן תרומת ה׳׃ <b>טו</b> העשיר לא ירבה והדל לא ימעיט ממחצית השקל לתת את תרומת ה׳ לכפר על נפשתיכם׃ --שמות פרק ל Do the math: 603,550 men is 301,775 shekels (at 10 grams per shekel and $1.07 a gram for silver on March 24, 2025, that's $3.2 million or 7.6 million eggs). There were 48 boards in the משכן‎ (20 each on the north and south sides, and 8 on the west), each of which had two silver sockets (אדנים). The four boards of the פרכת had one socket each, for a total of 100 sockets, each a הככר (translated in the Septuagint as τάλαντον, so in English, talent). There were 1775 shekels left from casting the אדנים, so a ככר was (301,775 - 1775)/100 = 3000 shekels = 30 kg. There has been much discussion of the בקע; why should we give a *split* shekel? The Ishbitzer starts with the gemara: {:he} >תנו רבנן: לעולם יראה אדם עצמו כאילו חציו חייב וחציו זכאי. עשה מצוה אחת--אשריו, שהכריע עצמו לכף זכות, עבר עבירה אחת---אוי לו, שהכריע את עצמו לכף חובה...רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון אומר: לפי שהעולם נידון אחר רובו, והיחיד נידון אחר רובו, עשה מצוה אחת--אשריו, שהכריע את עצמו ואת כל העולם לכף זכות, עבר עבירה אחת--אוי לו, שהכריע את עצמו ואת כל העולם לכף חובה. --קידושין מ,א-ב {:he} >ענין מחצית השקל. כדאיתא בגמרא (קידושין מ,ב) ”לעולם יראה אדם עצמו כאילו חציו חייב וחציו זכאי; עשה מצוה אחת אשריו שהכריע עצמו לכף זכות“, היינו שלא יהיה לו תקופות וגם שלא יתייאש עצמו וזהו (שמות ל:טו) הֶעָשִׁיר לֹא יַרְבֶּה וְהַדַּל לֹא יַמְעִיט מִמַּחֲצִית הַשָּׁקֶל. רק תמיד יהיה לו חצי המשקל. --מי השלוח, חלק ב, ספר שמות, כי תשא As Rabbi Schwartz summarizes: >All growth-oriented Jews face the problem of plateauing. Most people begin their lives as /ovdei Hashem/ with a period of sustained growth. Of course, we stumble and suffer setbacks but, in general, the arrows on the graphs of our spirituality head upward. Later, for a variety of reasons, we begin to flat-line. We settle into a groove (some would call it a rut) and, essentially, we stop growing. > The lzhbitzer asserts two primary causes of plateauing: smug self perception of secure, set-for-life spiritual wealth on the one hand, and utter hopelessness, spiritual poverty, and a sense of futility on the other hand. --Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Schwartz, [_From the Waters of the Shiloach_](https://mosaicapress.com/product/from-the-waters-of-the-shiloach/), p. 270 If we feel spiritually "rich", then one more מצווה won't add to our Heavenly account, and one more עבירה won't hurt. On the other hand, if we feel ourselves to be spiritually "poor", then another מצווה won't be enough to balance the scales and another עבירה won't make things any worse. >This, says the Izhbitzer, is the /pasuk/'s intent. “Rich” and “poor” referenced in the verse are not addressing the size of one's bank account. Rather, these terms describe their personal spiritual ledger, the scales of the person's /mitzvos/ and /aveiros/--or, at least, their perception of those scales. The Torah issues a stern warning: “The rich may not give more and the poor may not give less than this half-weight.” The Torah does not ask us to build a house of G-d with the full shekel sensibility. The Torah demands that they "give," that they perceive and come to realize that half the standard unit of weight weighs down one side of the scale and that the other half standard unit of weight weighs down the other side of the scale. All is at all times in perfect equilibrium. That is why the the bases of the משכן, the אדנים that held everything else up and allows ה׳'s presence to exist in the world, were made of the בקע לגלגלת. Our decisions hold up the world. ---- And what of the extra 1775 shekels? For that we turn from Izhbitz to Brisk. {:he} >שאל קונטרוקוס השר את רבן יוחנן בן זכאי:...בגיבוי כסף אתה מוצא מאתים ואחת ככר ואחת עשרה מנה, דכתיב: ״בקע לגלגלת מחצית השקל בשקל הקדש וגו׳״, ובנתינת הכסף אתה מוצא מאת ככר, דכתיב: ״ויהי מאת ככר הכסף לצקת וגו׳״. משה רבכם גנב היה, או קוביוסטוס היה, או אינו בקי בחשבונות?... --בכורות ה,א >Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai answered that Moses used the remainder to make the hooks, as recorded in this verse. --Rabbi Joseph D. Soloveitchik, Chumash Mesoras haRav, Sefer Shemos 38:28 It's important to account for every detail, even the half-percent rounding error in the coins. That is symbolic of how we look at halacha. >The non-Jewish world does not understand why we are so concerned with details. Why do we not have a system which would free us from having to keep /mitzvos/ that are difficult to observe in specific circumstances? Why is there any significance to the tiny hooks? Why should they be accounted for? > Orthodox Jews are vilified for being pedantic, concentrating too much on small details, losing sight of the important principles. I once approached a college president on behalf of an Orthodox student who needed to have an exam rescheduled so he would not have to violate Shabbos or Yom Tov. The president asked why I could not grant the student a one-time dispensation, wondering why we should invest so much time and effort on /halachic/ minutiae. --Rabbi Joseph D. The hooks supported the curtains that defined the environs of the חצר המשכן. They defined the space in which קדושה was possible. >Moses realized that without the hooks, the sockets could not structurally bear the weight of the Mishkan. Without the small details, the fundamental principles would have long since disappeared. --Rabbi Joseph D.
