This shiur is largely a recap of <//פרשת מסעי תשע״ד>. The second of this week's double parasha starts with a list of the journeys of בני ישראל: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> אלה מסעי בני ישראל אשר יצאו מארץ מצרים לצבאתם; ביד משה ואהרן׃ <b>ב</b> ויכתב משה את מוצאיהם למסעיהם על פי ה׳; ואלה מסעיהם למוצאיהם׃ <b>ג</b> ויסעו מרעמסס בחדש הראשון בחמשה עשר יום לחדש הראשון; ממחרת הפסח יצאו בני ישראל ביד רמה לעיני כל מצרים׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק לג</footer></blockquote> <p>If you think about it, the second pasuk is very hard to understand. Why does the Torah need to tell us that Moshe wrote something in the Torah? We <em>know</em> Moshe wrote the Torah, that's an article of faith:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כד</b> ויהי ככלות משה לכתב את דברי התורה הזאת על ספר; עד תמם׃ <b>כה</b> ויצו משה את הלוים נשאי ארון ברית ה׳ לאמר׃ <b>כו</b> לקח את ספר התורה הזה ושמתם אתו מצד ארון ברית ה׳ אלהיכם; והיה שם בך לעד׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק לא</footer></blockquote> The answer seems to be the timing. Moshe wrote the Torah down at the end of his life; this was written a month and a half before that, when בני ישראל arrive at ערבות מואב. Moshe is about to start his last series of speeches, ספר דברים, but first he writes down their itinerary to this point. And what does על פי ה׳ mean? Ibn Ezra claims it refers to the journey: {:he} ><em>על פי ה'</em>: דבק עם למסעיהם. --אבן עזרא, במדבר לג:ב But Ramban disagrees. The על פי ה' refers to the *writing*: {:he} >”על פי ה'“ דבק עם ”ויכתוב משה“; לא כדברי ר"א שאמר שהוא דבק עם למסעיהם שכבר הודיענו זה (במדבר ט:כ) ”על פי ה' יחנו ועל פי ה' יסעו“. --רמב״ן, במדבר לג:א So why is writing these down, now, so important? The Netziv just gives up: {:he} >נכתב על פי ה׳ לאיזה תכלית נעלם ממנו, ויתגלה לעת קץ במהרה בימינו. --חומש העמק דבר, במדבר לג:ב But Rashi gives *two* reasons: <blockquote lang=he><p>למה נכתבו המסעות הללו, להודיע חסדיו של מקום, שאעפ״י שגזר עליהם לטלטלם ולהניעם במדבר, לא תאמר שהיו נעים ומטולטלים ממסע למסע כל ארבעים שנה ולא היתה להם מנוחה, שהרי אין כאן אלא ארבעים ושתים מסעות. צא מהם י״ד, שכולם היו בשנה ראשונה, קודם גזירה, משנסעו מרמעסס עד שבאו לרתמה. שמשם נשתלחו המרגלים...ועוד הוצא משם שמונה מסעות שהיו לאחר מיתת אהרן מהר ההר עד ערבות מואב בשנת הארבעים, נמצא שכל שמנה ושלשים שנה לא נסעו אלא עשרים מסעות. זה מיסודו של רבי משה הדרשן.</p> <p>ורבי תנחומא דרש בו דרשה אחרת: משל למלך שהיה בנו חולה והוליכו למקום רחוק לרפאותו, כיון שהיו חוזרין התחיל אביו מונה כל המסעות. אמר לו כאן ישננו, כאן הוקרנו, כאן חששת את ראשך וכו׳.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, במדבר לג:א, ד״ה אלה מסעי</footer></blockquote> The Rambam expands Rashi's first explanation, that the list teaches us ה׳'s mercy (this is Ramban's translation of the passage from מורה נבוכים): {:he} >הוסיף הרב במורה הנבוכים (ג:נ) תועלת בידיעתם לומר הצורך להזכיר המסעים גדול מאד, כי הנסים והאותות הנעשות היו אמיתיות לכל רואיהם. אך בעתיד יהיו דברים בשמועה ויכזיבם השומע...עמידת ישראל במדבר ארבעים שנה ומציאת המן בכל יום והם מקומות רחוקות מן הישוב ואינן טבעיות לבני אדם...ואמרה התורה (דברים כט:ה) ”לחם לא אכלתם ויין ושכר לא שתיתם“ וכל אלה אותות הם במעשה נס נראות לעין. וכאשר ידע הבורא יתברך כי...לא יאמינו השומעים בהם ויחשבו כי עמידתם במדבר הזה היה קרוב מן הישוב, מקום אשר בני אדם שם, כמו המדברות אשר ישכנו שם בני ערב היום, או מקומות אשר יהיה שם חריש וקציר, או יש שם עשבים וצמחים למאכל בני אדם, ושיהיה במקומות ההם בורות מים. על כן הרחיק מלבות בני אדם המחשבות האלה וחזק אלה האותות כולם בזכרון המסעות כדי שיראו אותם הדורות הבאים וידעו האותות הגדולות איך עמדו בני אדם במקומות ההם ארבעים שנה. כל אלו דבריו. --רמב״ן, במדבר לג:א Rashi's second explanation is that it is common, after a long journey, to review the details of all the places they stayed. We will have to expand on that later. ---- Why does Rashi bring two explanations? Sometimes he given different explanations because neither one is really satisfactory. But here I think it is because he is answering two different questions: למה נכתבו המסעות הללו in the course of the narrative: why did he write (or why did ה׳ command him to write) this list, before writing the entire Torah? The answer has to explain why his audience needed this list. And, secondly, למה נכתבו המסעות הללו, why write this list down in the final compilation of the Torah? The answer has to explain why *we*, 3500 years later, need this list. >Watsonian and Doylist describe two ways to engage with canon. > The terms arise from Sherlock Holmes fandom, where the Holmes stories are presented as if they were actually written by Dr. John Watson, the fictional character. However...they were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. > A Watsonian perspective tries to interpret the text from the standpoint of the text. This is sometimes called an in-universe perspective. > A Doylist perspective stands outside the text, and is sometimes called a real world perspective. Within the chronology of the narrative, Moshe writes down the list of the journeys because he is about to give a speech that starts with a historical overview. This was the source sheet, the outline, for the speech he was about to give. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> אלה הדברים אשר דבר משה אל כל ישראל בעבר הירדן; במדבר בערבה מול סוף בין פארן ובין תפל ולבן וחצרת ודי זהב׃ <b>ב</b> אחד עשר יום מחרב דרך הר שעיר עד קדש ברנע׃ <b>ג</b> ויהי בארבעים שנה בעשתי עשר חדש באחד לחדש; דבר משה אל בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה ה׳ אתו אלהם׃ <b>ד</b> אחרי הכתו את סיחן מלך האמרי אשר יושב בחשבון ואת עוג מלך הבשן אשר יושב בעשתרת באדרעי׃ <b>ה</b> בעבר הירדן בארץ מואב הואיל משה באר את התורה הזאת לאמר׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>...שהן דברי תוכחות ומנה כאן כל המקומות שהכעיסו לפני המקום בהן...</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים א:א</footer></blockquote> This reading helps explain why there are some details in this list and not others: {:he} ><b>ט</b> ויסעו ממרה ויבאו אילמה; ובאילם שתים עשרה עינת מים ושבעים תמרים ויחנו שם׃ ...<b>יד</b> ויסעו מאלוש; ויחנו ברפידם ולא היה שם מים לעם לשתות׃ <b>טו</b> ויסעו מרפידם; ויחנו במדבר סיני׃ <b>טז</b> ויסעו ממדבר סיני; ויחנו בקברת התאוה׃ --במדבר פרק לג Did anything important happen in מדבר סיני? Why mention the palms of אילם and the waters of רפידם? But that is the idea: The speeches of ספר דברים will talk about מעמד הר סיני. This outline only mentions events that are *not* going to be dealt with later. ---- Rashi's first answer is Doylist. The list is included in the Torah because we, the future readers of the Torah, need to learn it. The Sfas Emes says that the journey is symbolic of our journey through life: {:he} ><em>אלה מסעי כו׳ אשר יצאו מארץ מצרים כו׳</em>: תלה הכתוב המסעות ביצ"מ להודיע כמו שיציאת מצרים היה גאולה לדורות...כן כל המסעות הללו היו הכנה לכל הדורות שתקנו מקומות המסוכנים...וכל מסע הי' מלחמה בפני עצמה...והיה הכל לצורך דורות השפלים ועברו כמה מיני מלחמות...כי לעולם יש מלחמות לאיש ישראל וצריכין לצפות לצאת מכל מסע לבוא אח"כ למסע ולמלחמה אחרת וכן לעולם מוצאיהם למסעיהם ומסעיהם למוצאיהם. --שפת אמת, מסעי, תרמ"ד >Apparently, our liberation from Egypt was not a "one shot" process in which once and for all, we moved to a higher stage of development in our relationship with HaShem. On the contrary, the Sfas Emes finds it relevant to observe that every "masa" (journey) took us further from Egypt. Evidently, escape from the cesspool of tum'a which Egypt was known to be had to be gradual, involving many small steps. --Rabbi Nosson Chayim Leff, <a href="http://www.torah.org/advanced/sfas-emes/5765/masei.html">Sfas Emes, Parshas Mas'ei, 5632</a> {:he} >בפסוק ”אלה מסעי כו' מוצאיהם למסעיהם כו' מסעיהם למוצאיהם“. כי הנה האדם נקרא מהלך וצריך תמיד לילך ממדריגה אל מדריגה אחרת. --שפת אמת, מסעי, תרמ"ה ---- [Rabbi Sholom Riskin](https://ots.org.il/torah-lights-maasei-5779/) points out another question on the pasuk: the second half repeats the first half, but reversed: מוצאיהם למסעיהם followed by מסעיהם למוצאיהם.‎ מוצאיהם למסעיהם I understand: Moshe wrote the places they left to go traveling. But what does it mean that they traveled to the places they left? That's backwards; they traveled <em>from</em> the places they left. <p>Rabbi Riskin proposes that it is meant as a matter of mindset: they were traveling to the places they had left. <em>They were going back home</em>. In the first Egyptian exile, Avraham did this literally:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויעל אברם ממצרים הוא ואשתו וכל אשר לו ולוט עמו הנגבה׃ <b>ב</b> ואברם כבד מאד במקנה בכסף ובזהב׃ <b>ג</b> וילך למסעיו מנגב ועד בית אל עד המקום אשר היה שם אהלה בתחלה בין בית אל ובין העי׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק יג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כשחזר ממצרים לארץ כנען היה הולך ולן באכסניות שלן בהם בהליכתו למצרים...</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית יג:ג, ד״ה וילך למסעיו</footer></blockquote> <p>And, מעשה אבות סימן לבנים,‎ בני ישראל did the same thing (though not literally) when they left Egypt. And, even more מעשה אבות סימן לבנים, that is how we should view the long journey of the Jewish people over the millenia.</p> {:he} >ועוד יכלול ספור המסעות תועלת אחרת כי ירמוז לעתיד, שהרי דברי הנביאים כולם מוכיחים שהגאולה האחרונה כדמיון הראשונה, וכשם שיצאו ישראל בגאולה ראשונה ממצרים אל המדבר, כן בגאולה האחרונה עתידים שיצאו הרבה מישראל אל המדבר ויעברו במקומות האלה והקב"ה יכלכלם וינהלם שם כמו שעשה לישראל במדבר...והכתוב ירמוז זה ממה שהזכיר כאן שתי פעמים לשון מוצאיהם ויכתוב משה את מוצאיהם וחזר ואמר ואלה מסעיהם למוצאיהם, כי האחד הוא יציאת ישראל ממצרים והשני יציאתנו מן הגלות החל הזה...והקב"ה ברחמיו ימהר יחישה מעשהו, מעשה הגאולה בקרוב, ונגילה ונשמחה בו. --רבנו בחיי, במדבר לג:ב <blockquote lang=en><p>When S.Y. Agnon received the Nobel Prize for Literature, he was asked about his birthplace. To the interviewer's surprise, he answered that he was born in Jerusalem. The interviewer pointed out that everyone knew he had been born in Buczacz, a town in Galicia. Agnon corrected him: "I was born in Jerusalem more than 3,000 years ago. That was my beginning, my origin.
