There is a simple pasuk in this week's parsha that took me on a long, winding journey and I invite you to join me. {:he} >ויסעו מרעמסס בחדש הראשון בחמשה עשר יום לחדש הראשון; ממחרת הפסח יצאו בני ישראל ביד רמה לעיני כל מצרים׃ --במדבר לג:ג Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky as a short comment on this pasuk: {:he} >עיין בדברינו לעיל פרשת בא שהארכנו לבאר שממחרת הפסח דהכא הכוונה לט"ו בניסן, ואינו כמו ”ממחרת הפסח“ דספר יהושע ששם הכונה לט"ז בניסן, ועיי״ש. --אמת ליעקב, מסעי לג:ג And that needs to be explored. ממחרת הפסח reminds us that the holiday we call פסח is actually called חג המצות in the Torah; פסח is day we call ערב פסח. It's not a big deal, but Christians like making a distinction between the Feast of the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Chizkuni reminds us that the night after the קרבן פסח‎ --ליל הסדר--belongs to both holidays: {:he} ><em>ממחרת הפסח</em>: ערב יום ט״ו ולילה הראשון נקרא פסח על שם שעוסקים בקרבן שנקרא כן...אבל שאר החג מליל ראשון ואילך נקרא חג המצות. --חזקוני, במדבר לג:ג So ממחרת הפסח is the fifteenth of Nisan. The expression ממחרת הפסח occurs once more in תנ״ך: {:he} ><b>י</b> ויחנו בני ישראל בגלגל; ויעשו את הפסח בארבעה עשר יום לחדש בערב בערבות יריחו׃ <b>יא</b> וַיֹּ֨אכְל֜וּ מֵעֲב֥וּר הָאָ֛רֶץ מִמׇּחֳרַ֥ת הַפֶּ֖סַח מַצּ֣וֹת וְקָל֑וּי בְּעֶ֖צֶם הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ <b>יב</b> וישבת המן ממחרת באכלם מעבור הארץ ולא היה עוד לבני ישראל מן; ויאכלו מתבואת ארץ כנען בשנה ההיא׃ --יהושוע פרק ה But now it means something different. They could only eat the produce of the land on the day *after* יום טוב. {:he} ><b>י</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם כי תבאו אל הארץ אשר אני נתן לכם וקצרתם את קצירה והבאתם את עמר ראשית קצירכם אל הכהן׃ <b>יא</b> והניף את העמר לפני ה׳ לרצנכם; ממחרת השבת יניפנו הכהן׃ ...<b>יד</b> ולחם וקלי וכרמל לא תאכלו עד עצם היום הזה עד הביאכם את קרבן אלקיכם; חקת עולם לדרתיכם בכל משבתיכם׃ --ויקרא פרק כג So ממחרת הפסח here must mean the *sixteenth* of Nisan: {:he} >היינו דכתיב ”ויאכלו מעבור הארץ ממחרת הפסח“. ממחרת הפסח אכול? מעיקרא לא אכול; אלמא אקרוב עומר והדר אכול. --קידושין לז,ב-לח,א A simple explanation is that the meaning of "פסח" changed. It certainly has changed by our times; maybe it had already changed by Joshua's time. {:he} >א"כ ממחרת הפסח פי' למחרתו של יו"ט דהיינו ט"ז וכאן פירש למחרת אכילת קרבן פסח דהיינו ט"ו עצמו, וי"מ דאין מביאין ראיה מדברי קבלה על דברי תורה. --פענח רזא, מסעי ב:ב {:he} >ור"י מפרש:...לשון התורה לחוד ולשון נביאים לחוד ולשון חכמים לחוד. --תוספות, קידושין לז:ב Rabbeinu Tam has a different explanation, that involves reparsing the pasuk: יאכלו מעבור הארץ ממחרת הפסח מצות, on the fifteenth, and וקלוי בעצם היום הזה on the sixteenth. {:he} ><em>ממחרת הפסח אכול מעיקרא לא אכול</em>:...ואומר ר"ת: דהאי ממחרת הפסח דהכא היינו ט"ו בניסן נמי קאמר. וה"פ דקרא ”ויאכלו מעבור הארץ“ כלומר מן הישן, ממחרת הפסח שהרי הוצרכו לאכול מצות, וקלוי דהיינו חדש לא אכלו עד עצם היום הזה דהיינו ט"ז בניסן לאחר שקרב העומר. וה"נ אשכחן ט"ז דאיקרי בעצם היום הזה דכתיב ”ולחם וקלי וכרמל לא תאכלו עד עצם היום הזה“. --תוספות, קידושין לז:ב ---- Rav Kaminetsky has a different approach. And that gets back to a fundamental question of the Jewish calendar: when does the day begin? {:he} ><em>ויבדל אלקים בין האור ובין החשך</em>: שי"ב שעות היה היום ואח"כ הלילה י"ב. האור תחילה ואח"כ החשך. שהרי תחילת בריאת העולם היה במאמר ”יהי אור“. --רשב"ם, בראשית א:ד {:he} ><em>ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום שני</em>: שנטה היום לערוב, ואח"כ ויהי בקר של יום שני. הרי נגמר יום שני מששת הימים שאמר הקב"ה בעשרת הדברות, והתחיל עתה יום שלישי בבקר. --רשב"ם, בראשית א:ח That fits the פשט of the text well (Creation starts with the creation of light; presumably that is day, not night) but it's not how the halacha works. Ibn Ezra was horrified by Rashbam's statement: {:he} >...הגד הוגד לה אשר הביאו תלמידיך אתמול אל ביתך ספרים פרושי התורה, ושם כתוב לחלל את ליל השבת...והוא אומר כי כאשר היה בקר יום שני אז עלה יום אחד שלם, כי הלילה הולך אחר היום. וכמעט קט קרעתי בגדי, וגם קרעתי זה הפירוש...ואדור נדר...אכתוב אגרת ארוכה לבאר מתי ראשית יום התורה. --אבן עזרא, אגרת השבת, הקדמה, מובא ב־Marc Shapiro, [_ArtScroll’s Response and My Comments_](https://seforimblog.com/2015/01/artscrolls-response-and-my-comments/) An argument in the ראשונים about פשט isn't unusual. What is unusual is that Artscroll, in their /Mikraot Gedolot/, *removed Rashbam's comments*. They censored one of the בעלי תוספות. >Let us make clear at the outset, ArtScroll has total and uncompromising respect for Chazal and the classic commentators. We do not censor them. Every one of their words is holy, and we have never deigned to tamper with their sacred texts. > For an understanding of the matter under discussion, it is important to present the background of the published versions of Rashbam’s commentary on the Torah. > Rashbam’s commentary was first printed in 1705, based on the only existing manuscript of his virtually complete commentary on the Chumash. That manuscript began with Parashas Vayeira... > In 1882, David Rosin published a new annotated edition of Rashbam’s commentary. The new edition also included a commentary on the Parshiyos Bereishis, Noach, and Lech-Lecha based on comments culled by Rosin from Rashbam’s other writings as well as selections from other works that cite Rashbam. Additionally, this 1882 edition included material taken from a newly-discovered manuscript containing one page of commentary ascribed to Rashbam, on only the first chapter of Bereishis ending in the middle of verse 1:31. > This manuscript fragment includes an exegesis that appears several times--an exegesis that Ibn Ezra, in his famous /Iggeres HaShabbos/, vehemently condemns, stating, that it had been put forth by “minim” (heretics). Furthermore, a later exegesis in the same manuscript page (on verse 14) directly contradicts that earlier exegesis. > In our Czuker edition of Mikraos Gedolos, we wished to provide the Torah public with the fullest version of the Rashbam’s commentary, so rather than beginning with Parashas Vayeira, we incorporated additional material from the 1882 Rosin edition, from the beginning of Bereishis. However, given Ibn Ezra’s attribution of this exegesis to “minim,” coupled with a completely contradictory exegesis in verse 14, it is questionable whether Rashbam actually proposed the exegesis attributed to him. Because of these factors we added only those writings attributed to Rashbam whose authenticity have not been questioned. Far from “censorship,” we have added to the older, standard Mikraos Gedolos editions. > Nevertheless, for the sake of clarity, we should have indicated that the basis for our text of Rashbam was the standard Vilna edition of 1898, with emendations from the Rosin edition of 1882. Indeed, this is what we have indicated in our just-published Sefer Shemos volume, and which will be reflected in future reprints of Sefer Bereishis. --Artscroll's official response to the controversy, as quoted in Marc Shapiro, [_ArtScroll’s Response and My Comments_](https://seforimblog.com/2015/01/artscrolls-response-and-my-comments/) Rabbi Marc Shapiro points out that Artscroll is being disingenuous. No one is claiming that Rashbam didn't start Shabbat on Friday night. >Although Rashbam is not mentioned by name, the standard view in traditional and scholarly circles is that Ibn Ezra was indeed directing his words at Rashbam...Ibn Ezra never denies the authenticity of the interpretation he is responding to; he just attacks it. His attack on Rashbam’s view is just like Nahmanides’ attack on Maimonides’ view that the angels who came to Abraham were really just part of a prophetic vision. Nahmanides does not deny that Maimonides said this, but he does say that it is forbidden to accept what Maimonides says. It is the exact same thing here. Ibn Ezra is not denying that Rashbam offered the interpretation. He is simply saying that it is forbidden to accept this approach. (I should also add, since we are discussing a dispute between Ibn Ezra and Rashbam, that by any traditional measure Rashbam must be regarded as a more significant and authoritative figure than Ibn Ezra.) --Marc Shapiro, [_ArtScroll’s Response and My Comments_](https://seforimblog.com/2015/01/artscrolls-response-and-my-comments/) And in fact there are many authorities who hold like Rashbam, that the "day" of creation started in the morning, but the halachic "day" starts at evening. Rav Kaminetsky assumes the Rashbam is right (don't tell Artscroll!), and that "פסח" refers not to the sacrifice but to the סדר, when it was eaten (as Chizkuni said, ערב יום ט״ו *ולילה הראשון* נקרא פסח) {:he} >הפסח שבא בטמאה, נאכל בטמאה, *שלא בא מתחלתו אלא לאכילה*. --משנה פסחים ז:ד {:he} >דבאמת הפסח אינו בא אלא לאכילה [פסחים עו,ב] ולפיכך הכל תלוי בזמן אכילתו, אלא דבפרשת מסעי דקאי אפסח מצרים, דאז הלילה עדיין היה יום י״ד ולפיכך ממחרת הפסח נקרא אז יום ט״ו, משא״כ בספר יהושע דקאי אפסח של כניסתן לארץ ישראל, ואז ליל פסח, שהוא זמן אכילת הפסח, היה בט״ו בניסן, ולפיכך ממחרת הפסח הוא ט״ז בניסן, ודו״ק כי נכון הוא. --אמת ליעקב, בא יב:י ---- That's "cute". But why does it matter? Why should the Torah change the definition of a day? {:he} >סדרי היום לא נשתנו אצל ישראל עד מתן התורה, מפני שאז נתבססה הבריאה. וכמאמרם בשבת (פח,א): ”וַיְהִי עֶרֶב וַיְהִי בֹקֶר יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי“, ה׳ יְתֵירָה לָמָּה לִי? מְלַמֵּד שֶׁהִתְנָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עִם מַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית וְאָמַר לָהֶם: אִם יִשְׂרָאֵל מְקַבְּלִים הַתּוֹרָה, אַתֶּם מִתְקַיְּימִין, וְאִם לָאו, אֲנִי מַחֲזִיר אֶתְכֶם לְתוֹהוּ וָבוֹהוּ. ואז התחילו סדר הבריאה: ויהי ערב ויהי בקר, שהיום הולך אחר הלילה. --אמת ליעקב, בא יב:י In other words, starting the day with the previous evening says that Creation did not start with ויהי אור. There was something "before" that. {:he} ><em>בראשית ברא אלקים</em>: זה שאמר הכתוב (משלי ג:יט): ה' בְּחׇכְמָה יָסַד אָרֶץ. וכשברא הקדוש ברוך הוא את עולמו נתיעץ בתורה וברא את העולם. --מדרש תנחומא, בראשית א:א {:he} >קב״ה אסתכל באורייתא וברא עלמא. ב״נ אסתכל בה באורייתא ומקיים עלמא. --נפש החיים, שער ד, יא At מתן תורה, when we said נעשה ונשמע, we accepted that there is a purpose to creation and that we are part of that purpose. That was the וַיְהִי עֶרֶב that preceded the וַיְהִי בֹקֶר of יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי, the culmination of Creation.
