When Chana came back from seminary this summer, she gave me a ספר they had been learning, Rav Chaim Friedlander's שפתי חיים on דברים. Rav Friedlander was a talmid of Rav Dessler, one of the editors of מכתב מאליהו, and his commentary is very mussar-oriented. For פרשת כי תבא, he starts with the Tanchuma that Rashi cites: {:he} >היום הזה ה׳ אלקיך מצוך לעשות את החקים האלה ואת המשפטים; ושמרת ועשית אותם בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך׃ --דברים כו:טז {:he} ><em>היום הזה ה' אלקיך מצוך</em>: בכל יום יהיו בעיניך חדשים כאלו בו ביום נצטוית עליהם. --רש״י, שם Rashi is only citing a piece of a much longer midrash: {:he} >מַהוּ ”הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ“? וְכִי עַד עַכְשָׁו לֹא צִוָּה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל? וַהֲלֹא אוֹתָהּ שָׁנָה שְׁנַת אַרְבָּעִים הָיְתָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (דברים א:ג): ”וַיְהִי בְּאַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה בְּעַשְׁתֵּי עָשָׂר חֹדֶשׁ“. וּמַה תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר, ”הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה“? אֶלָּא כָּךְ אָמַר מֹשֶׁה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל: בְּכָל יוֹם יְהֵא הַתּוֹרָה חֲבִיבָה עֲלֵיכֶם כְּאִלּוּ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה קִבַּלְתֶּם אוֹתָהּ מֵהַר סִינָי. וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר בְּמָקוֹם אַחֵר (דברים ד:ט),”וְהוֹדַעְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְלִבְנֵי בָּנֶיךָ“ . וּכְתִיב בַּתְרֵיהּ, ”יוֹם אֲשֶׁר עָמַדְתָּ לִפְנֵי ה׳“. --מדרש תנחומא, כי תבא א But this is only the second part of that midrash. It starts with a different reading of היום: {:he} ><em>הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ מְצַוְּךָ לַעֲשׂוֹת</em>: זֶה שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב (תהלים צה:ו): ”בּוֹאוּ נִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה וְנִכְרָעָה נִבְרְכָה לִפְנֵי ה' עוֹשֵׂנוּ“. וַהֲלֹא כְּרִיעָה בִּכְלַל הִשְׁתַּחֲוָיָה, וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוָיָה בִּכְלַל כְּרִיעָה; וּמַה תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר, ”נִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה נִכְרָעָה נִבְרְכָה“? אֶלָּא צָפָה מֹשֶׁה בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְרָאָה שֶׁבֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ עָתִיד לֵחָרֵב וְהַבִּכּוּרִים עֲתִידִין לִפָּסֵק, עָמַד וְהִתְקִין לְיִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מִתְפַּלְּלִין שְׁלֹשָׁה פְּעָמִים בְּכָל יוֹם, לְפִי שֶׁחָבִיב תְּפִלָּה לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מִכָּל מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים וּמִכֹּל הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת. --מדרש תנחומא, כי תבא א The previous two paragraphs were about ביכורים and וידוי מעשר, so the midrash says that היום, "today", after learning the laws of ביכורים, you need to be reminded of another law, the law of תפילה. The concept of davening three times a day is not in the Torah, but it is mentioned in תנ״ך: {:he} >ערב ובקר וצהרים אשיחה ואהמה; וישמע קולי׃ --תהילים נה:יח {:he} > ודניאל כדי ידע די רשים כתבא על לביתה וכוין פתיחן לה בעליתה נגד ירושלם; וזמנין תלתה ביומא הוא ברך על ברכוהי ומצלא ומודא קדם אֱלָ־הֵהּ כל קבל די הוא עבד מן קדמת דנה׃ --דניאל ו:יא But still, what's the connection between the first fruits and prayer? We usually think of prayer as corresponding to the קרבנות, not ביכורים. And why does the midrash bring up a pasuk from תהילים as a prooftext? To answer the latter question, we need to realize that תהלים צה was written by Moshe: <blockquote lang="he"><p> דוד כתב ספר תהלים ע״י עשרה זקנים: ע״י אדם הראשון, על ידי מלכי צדק, ועל ידי אברהם, וע״י משה… </p> <footer class="source">בבא בתרא יד,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang="he"><p>תפלה למשה (תהלים צ) וכל אחד עשר מזמורים כסדרן.</p> <footer class="source">רש״י, שם ד״ה ועל ידי משה </footer></blockquote> Rashi gets this from the midrash: <blockquote lang="he"><p>אמר רבי לוי בשם רבי חנינא: אחד עשר מזמורים שאמר משה בטכסיס של נבואה אמרן. ולמה לא נכתבו בתורה? אלו דברי תורה ואלו דברי נבואה.</p> <footer class="source">מדרש תהילים צ</footer></blockquote> (I think that דברי נבואה shouldn't be taken literally; ספר תהילים is in כתובים. Moshe sometimes writes ברוח הקרש, not at the level באספקלריא המאירה.) We say it every week at the start of קבלת שבת: <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>א</b> לכו נרננה לה׳; נריעה לצור ישענו׃<br> <b>ב</b> נקדמה פניו בתודה; בזמרות נריע לו׃<br> ...<b>ו</b> באו נשתחוה ונכרעה; נברכה לפני ה׳ עשנו׃<br> ...<b>ח</b> אל תקשו לבבכם כמריבה; כיום מסה במדבר׃<br> <b>ט</b> אשר נסוני אבותיכם; בחנוני גם ראו פעלי׃<br> <b>י</b> ארבעים שנה אקוט בדור ואמר עם תעי לבב הם;<br>והם לא ידעו דרכי׃<br> <b>יא</b> אשר נשבעתי באפי; אם יבאון אל מנוחתי׃</p> <footer class="source">תהילים פרק צה</footer></blockquote> The psamlist exhorts us to bring a thanksgiving offering, and to נשתחוה ונכרעה נברכה (which the midrash interprets as תפילה three times a day), with the historical lesson not to be like בני ישראל at מסה ומריבה: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם על פי ה׳; ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם׃ <b>ב</b> וירב העם עם משה ויאמרו תנו לנו מים ונשתה; ויאמר להם משה מה תריבון עמדי מה תנסון את ה׳׃...<b>ו</b> הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור בחרב והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם; ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל׃ <b>ז</b> ויקרא שם המקום מסה ומריבה; על ריב בני ישראל ועל נסתם את ה׳ לאמר *היש ה׳ בקרבנו אם אין*׃ --שמות פרק יז This perek was clearly written at the end of the 40 years in the wilderness (ארבעים שנה אקוט בדור), and is all about תודה, gratitude. This perek is the message that we need to express our gratitude to ה׳, and *that* is the message of בכורים. Don't be like בני ישראל who didn't acknowledge ה׳'s gifts; every year you need to come to the בית המקדש and say "Thank you". The problem is that in good times, we forget to think. ביכורים addresses that. {:he} >לאור זאת נבין את דברי המדרש שראה משה שיבוא זמן שמצוה יקרה ויסודית זו כביכורים תהיה חסרה, וזה מה שאמר הכתוב ”בואו נשתחוה נכרעה ונברכה לפני ה׳ אלוקינו“, וחז״ל ציינו זאת עה״פ ”היום הזה ה׳ אלוקיך מצוך לעשות“, אמנם כשנאמרה פרשת ביכורים עדיין לא ניצטוו במצוה זו אלא רק אחרי שיכנסו לארץ ישראל, אך יש מצוה שהיא מאותה השורש של הביכורים ששייכותה בכל עת ובכל זמן גם קודם שנתחייבו בביכורים, וגם אחר שא״א יהיה להביא ביכורים ולעשות את החוקים האלה בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך, זוהי מצות התפילה שהיא עבודה שבלב...ומשה ברוח קדשו ראה שיבוא זמן שלא יהיה ביכורים כאשר בית המקדש יחרב, עמד והתקין לישראל שיהיו מתפללים ג״פ ביום. --הרב חיים פרידלנדר, שפתי חיים, כי תבא ביכורים aren't obligatory until כי תבוא אל הארץ (and there are times and situations when מצות ביכורים doesn't apply), but the concept of תודה still applies. חז״ל are saying that משה established the תקנה of תפילה to remind us that we are dependent on ה׳ always, *especially* when things are so good that we have nothing to pray about. This goes back to the well-known מחלוקת between Rambam and Ramban: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>מצות עשה להתפלל בכל יום </em>...ואין מניין התפילות מן התורה ולא משנה התפילה הזאת מן התורה. ואין לתפילה זמן קבוע מן התורה; ולפיכך נשים ועבדים חייבין בתפילה לפי שהיא מצות עשה שלא הזמן גרמה.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות תפילה א:א</footer></blockquote> {:he} >...מכלל העבודה שנלמוד תורתו ושנתפלל אליו בעת הצרות ותהיינה עינינו ולבנו אליו כעיני עבדים אל יד אדוניהם...והיא מצוה על צרה שתבא על הצבור לזעוק לפניו בתפלה ובתרועה... --השגות הרמב"ן על ספר המצוות, מצוות עשה ה So, for the Rambam there is a מצוה to pray every day. For the Ramban, the מצוה only applies in times of צרה, when we feel the need to ask. Otherwise, there is no reason to pray. One of my father's jokes (this is a version I found online): <blockquote lang=en><p>An English couple adopt a little German baby. After two years the child doesn’t speak and the parents are worried about him. After three years he has not spoken and by his fourth birthday he still has not uttered a word.</p> <p>The English couple figure he is never going to speak but he is a lovely child and on his fourth birthday they throw him a party and make him a chocolate cake with orange icing.</p> <p>The parents are in the kitchen when the little German boy comes in and says, “Mother, Father, I do not like the orange icing on the chocolate cake.”</p> <p>“My goodness,” his mother says, “you can speak?”</p> <p>To which the German boy replies, “Of course.”</p> <p>“How come you have never spoken before?” his father asks.</p> <p>“Well,” the boy says, “up till now everything has been satisfactory.”</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://gratuitoussocks.wordpress.com/2008/01/03/my-favourite-german-joke/">John Lenahan</a></footer></blockquote> Rav Soloveitchik's philosophy of תפלה is described in the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0881257710"><cite>Worship of the Heart</cite></a>, published after his death, and he claims that the Ramban and Rambam do not fundamentally disagree: <blockquote lang=en><p>The controversy between Nachmanides and Maimonides does not revolve about the conjunction of prayer and <i lang=he>tzarah</i>. They are in agreement that the <i lang=he>tzarah</i> underlies prayer. They differ, however, about the substance of the experience of <i lang=he>tzarah</i> itself. The word <i lang=he>mi-ma'makkim</i> is in the plural, and one may speak of two distinct and incommesurate <i lang=he>tzarah</i> conceptions, of two ways of falling into the depths: first the experience of the surface <i lang=he>tzarah</i>, the external, objective, impersonal fall; and second, the experience of depth <i lang=he>tzarah</i>, the existential, personal fall.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0881257710">Rabbi Joseph B. Either we cannot feel the presence of G-d in our world, and we are utterly alone, or we <em>do</em> feel G-d's presence, and we are overwhelmed by the experience of the infinite.
