This shiur was inspired by Rav Yehudah Copperman's [_פשוטו של מקרא_](https://hebrewbooks.org/59572), section 4, chapter 2, on Rashbam's approach to פשט. Rashbam, רבי שמואל בן מאיר, was a grandson of Rashi, one of the major בעלי התוספות (in parts of the talmud where Rashi's commentary is incomplete or missing, Rashbam's commentary is printed as *the* commentary on the text). This week's parasha contains his famous introduction to the goals of his Torah commentary: {:he} ><b>א</b> וישב יעקב בארץ מגורי אביו בארץ כנען׃ <b>ב</b> אלה תלדות יעקב יוסף בן שבע עשרה שנה היה רעה את אחיו בצאן והוא נער את בני בלהה ואת בני זלפה נשי אביו; ויבא יוסף את דבתם רעה אל אביהם׃ --בראשית פרק לז {:he} ><em>אלה תולדות יעקב</em>: ישכילו ויבינו אוהבי שכל מה שלימדונו רבותינו (שבת סג,א), כי אין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו. אף כי עיקרה של תורה באה ללמדנו ולהודיענו ברמיזת הפשט וההגדות וההלכות והדינין ועל ידי אריכות הלשון ועל ידי שלושים ושתים מידות של ר' אליעזר בנו של ר' יוסי הגלילי וע"י שלש עשרה מידות של ר' ישמעאל והראשונים מתוך חסידותם נתעסקו לנטות אחרי הדרשות שהן עיקר ומתוך כך לא הורגלו בעומק פשוטו של מקרא. ולפי שאמרו חכמים (עיין ברכות כח,ב): אל תרבו בניכם בהגיון. וגם אמרו (עיין בבא מציעא לג,א): העוסק במקרא מדה ואינה מדה, העוסק בתלמוד אין לך מדה גדולה מזו ומתוך כך לא הורגלו כל כך בפשוטן של מקראות וכדאמרינן במסכת שבת: הוינא בר תמני סרי שנין וגרסינן כולה תלמודא ולא הוה ידענא דאין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו. --רשב״ם, בראשית לז:ב He is emphasizing that while there are שבעים פנים לתורה, the עיקר, the "important" way to read it, is the דרש, the text interpreted in the light of the תורה שבעל פה. However, אין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו, there is value (*religious* value) in understanding the פשט, the text as understood through the eyes of a sophisticated reader without the knowledge of the מסורה of the תורה שבעל פה. And that is Rashbam's mission in his Torah commentary. He is filling a gap that those who learn only Talmud are missing. And then he adds a nice little vignette about his grandfather, Rashi: {:he} >וגם רבינו שלמה אבי אמי מאיר עיני גולה שפירש תורה נביאים וכתובים, נתן לב לפרש פשוטו של מקרא. ואף אני שמואל ב"ר מאיר חתנו זצ"ל נתווכחתי עמו ולפניו והודה לי שאילו היה לו פנאי, היה צריך לעשות פירושים אחרים לפי הפשטות המתחדשים בכל יום. --רשב״ם, בראשית לז:ב My question when reading this is, why now? We've been reading the text of the Torah for the past 2 months. Why an "introduction" in פרשת וישב? First, what does Rashbam tell us about this pasuk in particular? He is going to tell us the פשט, and it is different from the דרש. His דבר המתחיל is אלה תולדות יעקב, and that is what he is addressing: {:he} >ועתה יראו המשכילים מה שפירשו הראשונים. ב”אלה תולדות יעקב“: אלה המקראות ומאורעות שאירעו ליעקב. --רשב״ם, בראשית לז:ב This is from the midrash: {:he} ><em>אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדֹת נֹחַ</em>: הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (משלי יא:ל): פְּרִי צַדִּיק עֵץ חַיִּים, מָה הֵן פֵּרוֹתָיו שֶׁל צַדִּיק מִצְווֹת וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים. --בראשית רבה ל:ו And as cited by Rashi (who will bring midrash אַגָּדָה הַמְיַשֶּׁבֶת דִּבְרֵי הַמִּקְרָא, as we discussed [last week](prev)): {:he} >לִמֶּדְךָ שֶׁעִקַּר תּוֹלְדוֹתֵיהֶם שֶׁל צַדִּיקִים מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים. --רש"י, בראשית ו:ט But Rashbam disagrees: {:he} >והנה זה הבל הוא, כי כל ”אלה תולדות“ האמורים בתורה ובכתובים יש מהם שמפרש בני האדם, ויש מהם רבים שמפרשים בני בנים, כאשר פירשתי באלה תולדות נח...כן ביעקב למעלה כתיב: ויהיו בני יעקב שנים עשר וגו'...ועתה כותב אלה תולדות יעקב בני בניו שהיו שבעים והיאך נולדו. כיצד יוסף היה בן שבע עשרה שנה ונתקנאו בו אחיו ומתוך כך ירד יהודה מאת אחיו והיה לו בנים בכזיב ובעדולם...ונתגלגל הדבר שיוסף הורד מצרימה ונולדו לו במצרים מנשה ואפרים ושלח יוסף בשביל אביו וביתו עד שהיו שבעים, וכל זה היה צריך משה רבנו לכתוב שעל זה הוכיחם בשבעים נפש ירדו אבותיך וגו'. --רשב״ם, בראשית לז:ב I think this answers why Rashbam brings his Rashi story here; it is a cute illustration of תולדות רש״י:‎ שמפרשים בני בנים. He mentions that he deals with the meaning of תולדות in his commentary on Noach, but when you look for that commentary; you can't find it (Sefaria has אלה תולדות נח: בני בניו, but that's just an interpolation from our comment, based on the work of [Rabbi Hillel Novetsky](https://alhatorah.org/Commentators:Rashbam's_Torah_Commentary/Bereshit1-17#BER6-9)). *There is no commentary by Rashbam on Noach*. And therein lies a story. >Rashbam's commentary was first printed only in 1705 from a sole surviving manuscript (MS Breslau 103), whose fate has remained unknown since being plundered during the Shoah. > Even this single manuscript (before being lost) was missing almost twenty-four chapters. It was truncated on both ends and hence was missing Rashbam's commentary on both Bereshit 1-17 and from Devarim 33:4 until the end of the Torah, and it also was missing Rashbam's commentary on Parashat Pinechas (Bemidbar 25:10 – 30:2). Fortuitously, Rashbam's commentary on two of these chapters survived in two other manuscripts. His commentary on Bereshit 1 (until the middle of the last verse of the chapter) is appended to the end of MS Munich 5,3 and his commentary on Devarim 34 is inserted at the end of Rashi's Torah commentary in MS Oxford Opp. 34.4 However, each one of these contains only one folio, and the remaining missing sections still total about ten percent of the complete commentary. --Hillel Novetsky, [_Reconstructing the Lost Parts of Rashbam's Torah Commentary_](https://alhatorah.org/Commentators:Rashbam's_Torah_Commentary/1/en) I do have to mention that the "found" commentary on בראשית is controversial. Some think it is a forgery, based on the fact that the comments there are contrary to the halacha. But that's a weak argument; Rashbam (even in the "accepted" text) explicitly says that his comments are against the halacha; that's why he says עיקרה של תורה באה ללמדנו...ההגדות וההלכות והדינין. Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky (אמת ליעקב בראשית א:ד) accepts it as authentic, and that's good enough for me. When we look at the beginning of his commentary, he *does* have an introduction right where you would expect it: {:he} >יבינו המשכילים כי כל דברי רבותינו ודרשותיהם כנים ואמתים. וזהו האמור במסכת שבת (דף סג,א): הוינא בר תמני סרי שנין, ולא ידענא דאין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו. ועיקר ההלכות והדרשות יוצאין מייתור המקראות או משינוי הלשון, שנכתב פשוטו של מקרא בלשון שיכולין ללמוד הימנו עיקר הדרשה, כמו (בראשית ב:ד) אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם, ודרשו חכמים: ”באברהם“, מאריכות הלשון, שלא היה צריך לכתוב בְּהִבָּרְאָם. --רשב״ם, בראשית א:א And he "introduces" his goal a lot: {:he} >ידעו ויבינו יודעי שכל כי לא באתי לפרש הלכות אף על פי שהם עיקר כמו שפירשתי בבראשית, כי מיתור המקראות נשמעים ההגדות והלכות ומקצתן ימצאו בפירושי רבינו שלמה אבי אמי זצ"ל. ואני לפרש פשוטן של מקראות באתי ואפרש הדינים וההלכות לפי דרך ארץ. ואעפ"כ ההלכות עיקר, כמו שאמרו רבותינו: הלכה עוקרת משנה. --רשב״ם, שמות כא:א, ד״ה ואלה המשפטים {:he} >כל פרשיות נגעי אדם ונגעי בגדים ונגעי בתים ומראותיהן וחשבון הסגרם ושערות לבנות ושער שחור וצהוב, אין לנו אחר פשוטו של מקרא כלום ולא על בקיאות דרך ארץ של בני אדם, אלא המדרש של חכמים וחקותיהן וקבלותיהן מפי החכמים הראשונים הוא העיקר. --רשב״ם, ויקרא יג:ב, ד״ה אדם כי יהיה בעור בשרו I would say that this is paralipsis, like Rashi's איני יודע מה מלמדנו or יש מדרשי אגדה רבים. He is intentionally drawing attention to the things he is *not* saying, that the דרש here is important. He offers an apologia for only bringing the פשט, because פשט is his goal, and he is flattered that you are reading it, but you really should know the תורה שבעל פה side first, because his comments are going to be different. (*Why* the Torah as given should be different from the תורה שבעל פה, is not Rashbam's concern. That is the subject of Rav Copperman's ספר). So I understand the introduction in matters of halacha. But why in our parasha? What's the importance of the דרש of לִמֶּדְךָ שֶׁעִקַּר תּוֹלְדוֹתֵיהֶם שֶׁל צַדִּיקִים מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים, that Rashbam wants to draw our attention to it from the פשט of בני בנים? I think he is hinting at the whole purpose of ספר בראשית. {:he} >(יהושוע י:יג) וַיִּדֹּם הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וְיָרֵחַ עָמָד...הֲלֹא הִיא כְתוּבָה עַל סֵפֶר הַיָּשָׁר. מאי ספר הישר? א״ר חייא בר אבא א״ר יוחנן זה ספר אברהם יצחק ויעקב שנקראו ישרים שנאמר (במדבר כג:י) תָּמֹת נַפְשִׁי מוֹת יְשָׁרִים. --עבודה זרה כה,א {:he} >וכן הרבה למדנו מהליכות האבות בדרך ארץ מה ששייך לקיום העולם, המיוחד לזה הספר שהוא ספר הבריאה. ומשום הכי נקרא כמו כן ספר הישר על מעשה אבות בזה הפרט. --חומש העמק דבר, פתיחה לספר בראשית ספר בראשית is where we learn the principles of moral behavior, things that cannot be specified in dry, black-letter law. We read the stories of the אבות to learn from them, and the מדרשים that fill in the details illustrate what חז״ל wanted us to learn from them. Rabbi Leibtag <a href="http://tanach.org/breishit/noach/noach.htm">points out</a> that the sequence of תולדות forms the outline of ספר בראשית: <blockquote lang=he><p>אלה תולדות השמים והארץ בהבראם; ביום עשות ה׳ אלקים ארץ ושמים׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית ב:ד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>זה ספר תולדת אדם; ביום ברא אלקים אדם בדמות אלקים עשה אתו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית ה:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אלה תולדת נח נח איש צדיק תמים היה בדרתיו; את האלקים התהלך נח׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית ו:ט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה תולדת בני נח שם חם ויפת; ויולדו להם בנים אחר המבול׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית י:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אלה תולדת שם שם בן מאת שנה ויולד את ארפכשד; שנתים אחר המבול׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יא:י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה תולדת תרח תרח הוליד את אברם את נחור ואת הרן; והרן הוליד את לוט׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יא:כז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה תלדת ישמעאל בן אברהם; אשר ילדה הגר המצרית שפחת שרה לאברהם׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית כה:יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה תולדת יצחק בן אברהם; אברהם הוליד את יצחק׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית כה:יט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה תלדות עשו הוא אדום׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לו:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אלה תלדות יעקב יוסף בן שבע עשרה שנה היה רעה את אחיו בצאן והוא נער את בני בלהה ואת בני זלפה נשי אביו; ויבא יוסף את דבתם רעה אל אביהם׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לז:א</footer></blockquote> Our תלדות יעקב is the last section of ספר בראשית. Rashbam's comments are not an introduction, but a conclusion. He addressed the midrashic idea of תלדות back in his introduction to בראשית א:א--‎אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם, ודרשו חכמים: באברהם. He is telling us here that he will continue to explain the פשט of the text, but if you've gotten to this point, you've read all the תולדות, and *only* read פשט, then you've missed the עקר. You would be better off just watching the [musical](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_and_the_Amazing_Technicolor_Dreamcoat).  Rashbam is reminding us that the דרש on the narrative parts of the Torah, what we call אגדה, is no less important than the דרש on the הלכה. The Torah is not a book of stories; it is our ethical and spiritual DNA.
