D'vorah Miller (wife of EHA principal Shmuel Miller) wrote a book of /divrei Torah/ (it was available at the EHA dinner this year) called [_Up to God_](https://mosaicapress.com/product/up-to-god/). She points out a textual oddity in this week's parsha: {:he} ><b>ה</b> וישלח מלאכים אל בלעם בן בער פתורה אשר על הנהר ארץ בני עמו לקרא לו; לאמר הנה עם יצא ממצרים הנה כסה את עין הארץ והוא ישב ממלי׃ <b>ו</b> ועתה לכה נא *ארה* לי את העם הזה כי עצום הוא ממני אולי אוכל נכה בו ואגרשנו מן הארץ; כי ידעתי את אשר תברך מברך ואשר תאר יואר׃ --במדבר פרק כב {:he} ><b>י</b> ויאמר בלעם אל האלקים; בלק בן צפר מלך מואב שלח אלי׃ <b>יא</b> הנה העם היצא ממצרים ויכס את עין הארץ; עתה לכה *קבה* לי אתו אולי אוכל להלחם בו וגרשתיו׃ --במדבר פרק כב Why the word change? What is the difference between ארה and קבה? Onkelos doesn't distinguish between the two words, translating both as לוֹט. Artscroll as well translates both as "curse". But Rashi says there is a difference: {:he} ><em>קבה לי</em>: זו קשה מארה לי, שהוא נוקב ומפרש. --רש"י, במדבר כב:יא That comes from the midrash, which expands "נוקב ומפרש": it means explicitly using ה׳'s name: {:he} >להודיע, שהיה שונא אותם יותר מבלק. שבלק לא אמר, קבה לי, אלא ארה לי. וזה אמר, קבה בפרוש, שנוקב השם ומפרש. --מדרש תנחומא, בלק ה We have pointed out [before](/PrST+bmdbr+TSPb/) that נוקב means "to specify": {:he} >ויאמר; נקבה שכרך עלי ואתנה׃ --בראשית ל:כח {:he} >ויקח משה ואהרן את האנשים האלה אשר נקבו בשמת׃ --במדבר א:יז And it is used in the sense of saying ה׳'s name as part of a curse: {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויקב בן האשה הישראלית את השם ויקלל ויביאו אתו אל משה; ושם אמו שלמית בת דברי למטה דן׃...<b>יג</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃..<b>טו</b> ואל בני ישראל תדבר לאמר; איש איש כי יקלל אלקיו ונשא חטאו׃ <b>טז</b> ונקב שם ה׳ מות יומת רגום ירגמו בו כל העדה; כגר כאזרח בנקבו שם יומת׃ --ויקרא פרק כד So that makes sense. The problem is that the grammar is wrong. Here, Bilaam is נוקב את העם, not נוקב את את השם. If נוקב means "specify", then what's wrong with specifying the Jewish people? So D'vorah Miller writes about a different approach. In the shiur on נקבו בשמת, Mickey Ariel objected that in modern Hebrew, נוקב means "to poke a hole in", not "specify". And it is used that way in תנ״ך as well: {:he} >ויקח יהוידע הכהן ארון אחד ויקב חר בדלתו; ויתן אתו אצל המזבח בימין (מימין) בבוא איש בית ה׳ ונתנו שמה הכהנים שמרי הסף את כל הכסף המובא בית ה׳׃ --מלכים ב יב:י {:he} >עתה הנה בטחת לך על משענת הקנה הרצוץ הזה על מצרים אשר יסמך איש עליו ובא בכפו ונקבה; כן פרעה מלך מצרים לכל הבטחים עליו׃ --מלכים ב יח:כא Miller cites Hirsch, who says that is the root here: >The root קוב or קבב in the meaning of cursing...only occurs in this episode...[T]he root is probably נקב...As נקב means to make a hole, קב would probably mean to hollow out...So that if נקב is used for beshrewing a person with words, קבב would mean, to wish a person to become quite hollow, without any internal support or content, to make him into a מץ, an empty husk [citing תהילים א:ד:‎ לֹא כֵן הָרְשָׁעִים; כִּי אִם כַּמֹּץ אֲשֶׁר תִּדְּפֶנּוּ רוּחַ]... --Hirsch Chumash, Numbers XXII:11 >So this word for "curse" is particularly related to speaking about someone in a manner that "hollows" them out. If you have ever been the target of a person with the intent to belittle you, you know that feeling "hollow" rings painfully true as a description of what that person's words have done to you. -- D'vorah Miller, [_Up to God_](https://mosaicapress.com/product/up-to-god/), p. 179 In this perspective, Bilaam's specialty wasn't putting magical hexes on people, it was [psyops](https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/specialty-careers/special-ops/psychological-operations.html). He demoralized his victims, made them feel worthless and so easy to conquer. He could find what is important to his victim, their sense of identity and self-esteem, and hollow it out. That is קבה. That tells us something about Bilaam. Avraham is the paragon of חסד, of doing good for ones fellow. To be a בעל חסד, you have to deeply understand "the Other" (in Levinas's terms), know their deepest needs and desires. But just having that level of "social intelligence" doesn't automatically make you a good person. >It's an amazing paradox—a con man has incredible emotional insight, but without the burden of compassion. Bilaam is forced to reveal a defense strategy against his own attack: {:he} ><b>ה</b> וישם ה׳ דבר בפי בלעם; ויאמר שוב אל בלק וכה תדבר׃...<b>ח</b> *מה אקב לא קבה א־ל*; ומה אזעם לא זעם ה׳׃ --במדבר פרק כג >Here's the thing: [the intent to belittle, to hollow out] is just that--just intent. It does not have to play out as reality. And the episode here with Bilaam reinforces that truth...Try as he might, only words of praise and blessing fell from his lips. During his first attempt to curse the Jews, Bilaam uttered the following: "How can I curse/hollow out what has not been hollowed out by G-d?
