This week’s parasha is the climax of all the preparation of the past year: בני ישראל are finally going to ארץ ישראל!
The problem is that the name of the mountain is wrong. The midrash lists 6 names for Mount Sinai, but none of them are הַר ה׳.
הַר אֱלֹקִים occurs many times. Why now הַר ה׳?
This relates to
Mickey Ariel’s question from 3 weeks ago: why, if we don’t know where Sinai is, does the Torah mention the name so prominently? Why do we care which mountain it was?
The first time we meet Mount Sinai, it’s called הר האלקים and חורב:
And חורב is the name used for what we have come to call “זכירת מעמד הר סיני”:
Why is it called סיני? This shiur is based on a radical idea of the כלי יקר. The כלי יקר was a pulpit rabbi, whose sermons pulled no punches.
And he starts with an aggadic explanation of the term סיני:
סיני comes from שנאה, ”hatred“. What does that mean?
There’s a more prosaic etymology implied by the Torah:
So סיני is the mountain of the סנה, a thorn bush. Why a סנה?
So according to the כלי יקר, the סנה is a negative symbol, representing the worst in בני ישראל. And when they get to what will be called הר סיני, they are supposed to reject that name:
That’s what was supposed to happen. What actually happened?
There’s an odd set of punctuation in this week’s parasha:
And we all know Rashi’s explanation for the distinction:
The question is, what פרענות are we separating?
The פֻּרְעָנוּת after are explicit: the מתאוננים, קברות התאוה and Miriam’s לשון הרע. But what פֻּרְעָנוּת were before this?
The answer, everyone assumes, is a pasuk before the inverted נון's, the one we started our shiur with:
And that idea comes from the name. They left הר ה׳, not the physical mountain but the place of the relationship inherent in the שם הויה: יום אשר עמדת לפני ה׳ אלקיך בחרב.
And the כלי יקר connects this to the נון, which is the Aramaic word for “fish”:
And this was the פרענות that started the downhill trend of the rest of ספר במדבר: the people were supposed to leave סיני, the place שירדה שנאה, and carry הר ה׳ with them:
But instead, ויסעו מהר ה׳ and we have continued to carry סיני, נמשלו לסנה זה שכל אחד לחבירו קוץ מכאוב ומשמיע קולו עליו בחרופים וגדופים.
