This week's parasha starts with a command to Moshe: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה בא אל פרעה; כי אני הכבדתי את לבו ואת לב עבדיו למען שתי אתתי אלה בקרבו׃ <b>ב</b> ולמען תספר באזני בנך ובן בנך את אשר התעללתי במצרים ואת אתתי אשר שמתי בם; וידעתם כי אני ה׳׃ <b>ג</b> ויבא משה ואהרן אל פרעה ויאמרו אליו כה אמר ה׳ אלקי העברים עד מתי מאנת לענת מפני; שלח עמי ויעבדני׃ <b>ד</b> כי אם מאן אתה לשלח את עמי הנני מביא מחר ארבה בגבלך׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק י</footer></blockquote> There's something that bothers Rashi: ה׳ just tells Moshe to go to Pharaoh, but not what to do when he gets there: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויאמר ה׳ אל משה בא אל פרעה</em>: וְהַתְרֵה בוֹ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות י:א</footer></blockquote> But that brings up the question of what does כי אני הכבדתי את לבו mean? "Go and warn Pharaoh, *because* he won't listen"? Rashi assumes we know that כי has multiple meanings: <blockquote lang=he><p>ותכחש שרה לאמר לא צחקתי כי יראה; ויאמר לא כי צחקת׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יח:טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי יראה וגו׳ כי צחקת</em>: הראשון משמש לשון דהא שנותן טעם לדבר ותכחש שרה לפי שיראה, והשני משמש בלשון אלא, ויאמר לא כדבריך הוא אלא צחקת, שאמרו רבותינו כי משמש בארבע לשונות אי, דילמא, אלא, דהא.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> So ה׳ is saying, "Go warn him, *despite the fact* that he will not listen, *because* I am going to do more signs for you (Moshe) to tell your children". <hr/> The plagues from here on are for Israel's sake, not Egypt's. That may explain why we divide the parshiot this way, with 7 plagues last week and 3 this week. Last week was the climax of the plagues aimed at Egypt: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>יד</b> כי בפעם הזאת אני שלח את <em>כל מגפתי אל לבך</em> ובעבדיך ובעמך בעבור תדע כי אין כמני בכל הארץ׃ ...<b>יח</b> הנני ממטיר כעת מחר ברד כבד מאד אשר לא היה כמהו במצרים למן היום הוסדה ועד עתה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק ט</footer></blockquote> And it was in hail that the Egyptians had to make a choice: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יט</b> ועתה שלח העז את מקנך ואת כל אשר לך בשדה; כל האדם והבהמה אשר ימצא בשדה ולא יאסף הביתה וירד עלהם הברד ומתו׃ <b>כ</b> הירא את דבר ה׳ מעבדי פרעה הניס את עבדיו ואת מקנהו אל הבתים׃ כא ואשר לא שם לבו אל דבר ה׳ ויעזב את עבדיו ואת מקנהו בשדה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק ט</footer></blockquote> And this is the plague with all the excitement and special effects: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כג</b> ויט משה את מטהו על השמים וה׳ נתן קלת וברד ותהלך אש ארצה; וימטר ה׳ ברד על ארץ מצרים׃ <b>כד</b> ויהי ברד ואש מתלקחת בתוך הברד; כבד מאד אשר לא היה כמהו בכל ארץ מצרים מאז היתה לגוי׃ <b>כה</b> ויך הברד בכל ארץ מצרים את כל אשר בשדה מאדם ועד בהמה; ואת כל עשב השדה הכה הברד ואת כל עץ השדה שבר׃ <b>כו</b> רק בארץ גשן אשר שם בני ישראל לא היה ברד׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק ט</footer></blockquote> And Pharaoh fails the test: <blockquote lang=he><p>וירא פרעה כי חדל המטר והברד והקלת ויסף לחטא; וַיַּכְבֵּד לבו הוא ועבדיו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ט:לד </footer></blockquote> Here, וַיַּכְבֵּד לבו, he hardens his own heart. In our parasha, אני הכבדתי את לבו. From now on, he is just a meat puppet for ה׳'s drama. <hr/> This is the first time we hear about a commandment to tell the story of the Exodus. <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ולמען תספר</em>: למשה ידבר שהוא כנגד כל ישראל וככה וידעתם כי אני ה' שידעו כל ישראל זה.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שמות י:ב</footer></blockquote> and we are supposed to תספר באזני בנך ובן בנך את אשר התעללתי במצרים. What is התעללתי? עולל generally means "develop", "cause to happen" (from the root על). In medieval Jewish philosophy, עִלָה וְעָלוּל means "cause and effect". Many מפרשים translate התעללתי as "that I did". But the Midrash connects it to a different sort of "development", the immature plant: <blockquote lang=he><p>כי תבצר כרמך לא תעולל אחריך; לגר ליתום ולאלמנה יהיה׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים כד:כא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>לא תעולל</em>: אם מצאת בו עוללות לא תקחנה. ואיזו היא עוללות? כל שאין לה לא כתף ולא נטף.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>את אשר התעללתי</em>: כשם שהם עוללו את כרמי, כך אני מעולל בהם.</p> <footer class=source>פסיקתא זוטרתא (לקח טוב) שמות פרשת בא פרק י סימן ב </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וכסה את עין הארץ ולא יוכל לראת את הארץ; ואכל את יתר הפלטה הנשארת לכם מן הברד ואכל את כל העץ הצמח לכם מן השדה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות י:ה</footer></blockquote> The locusts are just adding insult to injury. It's like the movie trope where a character is humiliated, loses their job, their home, their family, and is lying in the street, only to look down and see a dog urinating on him. It's almost a joke. <hr/> And that's exactly how Rashi reads it: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>התעללתי</em>: שָׂחַקְתִּי, כְּמוֹ ”כִּי הִתְעַלַּלְתְּ בִּי“, ”הֲלֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְעוֹלֵל בָּהֶם“, הָאָמוּר בְּמִצְרַיִם. וְאֵינוֹ לְשׁוֹן פּוֹעֵל וּמַעֲלָלִים, שֶׁאִם כֵּן הָיָה לוֹ לִכְתֹּב עוֹלַלְתִּי, כְּמוֹ (איכה א:כב) ”וְעוֹלֵל לָמוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר עוֹלַלְתָּ לִי“ ...</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות י:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כח</b> ויפתח ה׳ את פי האתון; ותאמר לבלעם מה עשיתי לך כי הכיתני זה שלש רגלים׃ <b>כט</b> ויאמר בלעם לאתון כי התעללת בי; לו יש חרב בידי כי עתה הרגתיך׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> ועשיתם צלמי עפליכם (טחריכם) וצלמי עכבריכם המשחיתם את הארץ ונתתם לאלקי ישראל כבוד; אולי יקל את ידו מעליכם ומעל אלהיכם ומעל ארצכם׃ <b>ו</b> ולמה תכבדו את לבבכם כאשר כבדו מצרים ופרעה את לבם; הלוא כאשר התעלל בהם וישלחום וילכו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק ו</footer></blockquote> ה׳ is just toying with the Egyptians. ארבה is a joke. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> לָמָּה רָגְשׁוּ גוֹיִם; וּלְאֻמִּים יֶהְגּוּ רִיק׃ ...<b>ד</b> יוֹשֵׁב בַּשָּׁמַיִם יִשְׂחָק; אֲדֹנָי יִלְעַג לָמוֹ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק ב </footer></blockquote> Abarbanel points out that the Torah goes out of its way to minimize the miraculous nature of ארבה. Locust swarms happen all the time, and this was basically a natural phenomenon: <blockquote lang=he><p>השאלה הו׳ באמרו ”וה׳ נהג רוח קדים בארץ“ וגומר ”ורוח הקדים נשא את הארבה“ וכן בהסרת המכה ”ויהפוך ה׳ רוח ים חזק מאד וישא את הארבה ויתקעהו ימה סוף וגו“'; ולמה זה הוצרך הכתוב לבאר באי זה אופן בא הארבה ,עם רוח קדים שואף וסר ע״י רוח ים חזק שנשאו? כי הנה לא תמצא בזה בשום מכה מן המכות שיזכור הכתוב הסבות האמצעיות אשר על ידיהן נעשה הנס. והמכה והיה די בשיאמר ”ויעל הארבה“, ובהסרה ”ויסר הארבה“, כמו שנאמר בצפרדעים ובערוב. ולמה זה נשתנה הסדר הזה בארבה?</p> <footer class=source>אברבנאל שמות פרק י </footer></blockquote> The Bechor Shor says that this is connected to the commandment to tell the story. This is a plague that people can relate to (at least those living in agricultural societies): <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ולמען תספר</em>: בארבה שייך ספור דברים יותר משאר מכות שארבה רגיל לבא לעולם וכשרואין את הארבה מזכירין ארבה משונה שהיה ואומרין אין זה ארבה אבל אני שמעתי על ארבה אחד שהיה בעולם שאין נראה כמותו וכן הוא אומר ביואל על הארבה עליה לבניכם ספרו ובניכם לבניהם ובניהם לדור אחר אלמא שדרך לספר על הארבה.</p> <footer class=source>יוסף בכור שור, שמות י:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> דבר ה׳ אשר היה אל יואל בן פתואל׃ <b>ב</b> שמעו זאת הזקנים והאזינו כל יושבי הארץ; ההיתה זאת בימיכם ואם בימי אבתיכם׃ <b>ג</b> עליה לבניכם ספרו; ובניכם לבניהם ובניהם לדור אחר׃ <b>ד</b> יתר הגזם אכל הארבה ויתר הארבה אכל הילק; ויתר הילק אכל החסיל׃</p> <footer class=source>יואל פרק א</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Why does this matter? I think that the message is למען תספר באזני בנך ובן בנך. Plagues are scary. יציאת מצרים is scary. We have to at least introduce the story with something that kids can relate to. Nowadays, the plague that we illustrate for the kids is צפרדע: <blockquote lang=en><p>One day when King Pharoah awoke in his bed<br/> There were frogs in his bed and frogs on his head<br/> Frogs on his nose and frogs on his toes<br/> Frogs here! Frogs there!<br/> Frogs were jumping everywhere.<br/> <p>The plague of frogs which we read about in today’s parasha is probably the funniest of the plagues and the one we have the most fun with at the Passover Seder. We sing songs about it. We have little frogs decorating the Seder table.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://h-nt.org/2018/01/23/there-goes-the-neighborhood/"><cite>There Goes The Neighborhood</cite></a></footer></blockquote> But really that's not right. צפרדע was more than frogs and in fact was terrifying: <blockquote lang=he><p>ישלח בהם ערב ויאכלם; וצפרדע ותשחיתם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים עח:מה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> והנה ידוע דעות שונות בין מפרשים ראשונים ז״ל אם היו הצפרדעים מין הידוע המשחית הנמצא עוד היום ביאור ונקרא (קראקאדיל) או הוא מין הנמצא ברובי הנהרות וצועקים ומכרכרים. ולפי דברינו שני הפרושים אמת.</p> <footer class=source>העמק דבר, שמות ז:כט</footer></blockquote> For thousands of years, it was *grasshoppers* that were fun: <blockquote lang=en><p>It is a tradition passed down from previous generations in all the regions of Yemen that the locust, renowned for its tremendous numbers and known in Arabic as <i lang=ar>garad </i>is a kind of <i lang=he>hagav</i> and is kosher. And when they see the wing of it, they rejoice at its coming. Even though they are sorry about the damage it causes in consuming the grain of the country, nonetheless they take momentary pleasure in it. Towards evening, they look over the roofs where the locust has alighted, and though it be a walk of an hour or two, they rise early before dawn, while the land is still frozen with the cold, and leave the city, man, woman, and child, and every one is carrying a bag. They collect whatever comes to hand. Whoever has a donkey fills sacks and loads them onto his donkey, and they come back to the country joyful and happy, like someone who has found great treasure.</p> <footer class=source>R.
