This week's parasha starts with a list of the rules for כהנים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה אמר אל הכהנים בני אהרן; ואמרת אלהם לנפש לא יטמא בעמיו׃ <b>ב</b> כי אם לשארו הקרב אליו; לאמו ולאביו ולבנו ולבתו ולאחיו׃ ...<b>ה</b> לא יקרחה (יקרחו) קרחה בראשם ופאת זקנם לא יגלחו; ובבשרם לא ישרטו שרטת׃ <b>ו</b> קדשים יהיו לאלקיהם ולא יחללו שם אלקיהם; כי את אשי ה׳ לחם אלקיהם הם מקריבם והיו קדש׃ <b>ז</b> אשה זנה וחללה לא יקחו ואשה גרושה מאישה לא יקחו; כי קדש הוא לאלקיו׃ <b>ח</b> וקדשתו כי את לחם אלקיך הוא מקריב; קדש יהיה לך כי קדוש אני ה׳ מקדשכם׃ </p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק כא</footer></blockquote> I want to talk about the haftorah, mostly based on a discussion by Rav Moshe Lichtenstein, <a href="http://www.hatanakh.com/articles/%D7%94%D7%A4%D7%98%D7%A8%D7%AA-%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A8-%D7%94%D7%AA%D7%97%D7%93%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%AA-%D7%94%D7%99%D7%97%D7%A1%D7%99%D7%9D"><cite>הפטרת אמור--התחדשות היחסים</cite></a>. But I would introduce it with a point from Rav Shalom Carmy: <blockquote lang=en><p>Following Abarbanel's general introduction, when we focus on the early <i lang=he>parshiyyot</i> of the book, we tend to think of <i lang=he>Vayikra</i> as oriented to the priests. By the time we reach <i lang=he>Kedoshim</i>, it seems evident that the center of gravity has shifted decisively to the entire people of Israel. Thus it seems odd that <i lang=he>Emor</i> follows <i lang=he>Kedoshim</i>, returning, as it were, to the special status of the priests. If the order had been the opposite, we would have said that the Torah began by singling out the priests as holy, and then "democratically," so to speak, bestowed holiness on the entire nation...</p> <p>Compound this with another difficulty. In Ch. 21, Moses is told to speak to the <i lang=he>kohanim</i>. One would expect the speech to address the priests in the second person. Instead, the message is reported as an indirect discourse in which the <i lang=he>kohanim</i> are referred to in the third person...When the Torah eventually uses the second person, the addressee is not the priest, but the community of Israel: "And you shall sanctify him..." From a grammatical point of view, Moses is not speaking to the priests, but about them.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Shalom Carmy, <cite>From Israelites to Priests: On the Unfolding of Vayikra's Teaching</cite>, in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mitokh-Ha-Ohel-Within-Tent-Parashah/dp/1592643248"><cite>Mitokh Ha-Ohel: The Weekly Parashah</cite></a>, p. 300</footer></blockquote> The answer is that the קדושה of the כהנים is dependent on the קדושים תהיו of כנסת ישראל: <blockquote lang=en><p>[T]he movement from <i lang=he>Kedoshim</i> to <em>Emor</em> exhibits the sanctity of the priests as a facet of the sanctity of Israel...[T]he Torah begins with the idea that the entire nation is intended to be a "kingdom of priests and a holy nation" (<i lang=he>Shemot</i> 19:6). As we said above, the קדושה of the כהנים is a reflection of the קדושה of כנסת ישראל as a whole. If they are to be upgraded, then it must be that we all are to be upgraded. And *that* is the essence of Yechezkel's vision: <blockquote lang=he><p>ניתן, כמובן, ללכת בעקבות הרד״ק ולדבר על כך שתהיה תוספת קדושה לעתיד לבא, ועל כן הדרישות מאת הכוהנים יהיו גבוהות יותר. ואולם, נראה שאין מדובר רק בתולדה ממצב של תוספת קדושה אלא שזה גופא חלק ממגמת הנבואה, והיא לנחם אותם ולבשר לישראל שיוכלו להתקדש ולהתעלות כשהבית ייבנה מחדש. להבנת העניין, עלינו להבין את הספק המְכַרְסֵם בלב העם בעקבות החורבן, והוא שמא לא ניתן יהיה לחזור ולחדש את אהבת הנעורים שבין ישראל לאביהם שבשמים ושאף אם יבנה המקדש, לעולם לא תהיה בו השראת שכינה כבעבר. ולאו מילתא זוטרתא היא; בל נשכח שזהו בדיוק המצב המתואר ע״י חז״ל מבחינת היחס שבין בית ראשון לבית שני. למרות שבית שני נבנה והעבודה חזרה לציון, הרי שהשראת השכינה שהיתה בבית ראשון לא התקיימה בבית שני...זוהי השאלה שיחזקאל מנסה להתמודד אתה בבואו לנבא על בנין הבית העתידי, ובשורתו לעם היא החזרת עטרה לישנה.</p> <footer class=source>הרב משה ליכטנשטיין, <a href="http://www.hatanakh.com/articles/%D7%94%D7%A4%D7%98%D7%A8%D7%AA-%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A8-%D7%94%D7%AA%D7%97%D7%93%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%AA-%D7%94%D7%99%D7%97%D7%A1%D7%99%D7%9D"><cite>הפטרת אמור--התחדשות היחסים</cite></a></footer></blockquote> The tragedy of the second בית המקדש was that it was destroyed because of שינת חינם, the lack of a relationship between human beings, before it could achieve the state of restoring the relationship between human beings and הקב״ה. Our תפילות are that the next בית המקדש will achieve that goal, and we will be a true ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש.
