This week's parasha (at least in חוץ לארץ) starts with the rituals for Yom Kippur: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ז</b> ולקח את שני השעירם; והעמיד אתם לפני ה׳ פתח אהל מועד׃ <b>ח</b> ונתן אהרן על שני השעירם גרלות גורל אחד לה׳ וגורל אחד לעזאזל׃ <b>ט</b> והקריב אהרן את השעיר אשר עלה עליו הגורל לה׳; ועשהו חטאת׃ <b>י</b> והשעיר אשר עלה עליו הגורל לעזאזל יעמד חי לפני ה׳ לכפר עליו לשלח אתו לעזאזל המדברה׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק טז</footer></blockquote> The whole שעיר המשתלך is very mysterious. Ibn Ezra has an obscure comment: <blockquote lang=he><p> ואם יכולת להבין הסוד שהוא אחר מלת עזאזל תדע סודו וסוד שמו, כי יש לו חברים במקרא. ואני אגלה לך קצת הסוד ברמז בהיותך בן שלשים ושלש תדענו.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, ויקרא טז:ח</footer></blockquote> The Ramban explains the Ibn Ezra: <blockquote lang=he><p>הנה ר״א (משלי יא:יג) נֶאֱמַן רוּחַ מְכַסֶּה דָבָר, ואני הרָכִיל מְגַלֶּה סּוֹד שכבר גלו אותו רבותינו ז״ל במקומות רבים.</p> <p>...והנה רמז לך ר״א שתדע סודו כשתגיע לפסוק ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירים...</p> <p>כי היינו צריכים לחסום פי המתחכמים בטבע הנמשכים אחרי היוני אשר הכחיש כל דבר זולתי המורגש לו, והגיס דעתו לחשוב הוא ותלמידיו הרשעים, כי כל ענין שלא השיג אליו הוא בסברתו איננו אמת.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, ויקרא טז:ח</footer></blockquote> Count 33 verses from ויקרא טז:ח and you end up at: <blockquote lang=he><p>ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירם אשר הם זנים אחריהם; חקת עולם תהיה זאת להם לדרתם׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא יז:ז</footer></blockquote> The context is: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> למען אשר יביאו בני ישראל את זבחיהם אשר הם זבחים על פני השדה והביאם לה׳ אל פתח אהל מועד אל הכהן; וזבחו זבחי שלמים לה׳ אותם׃ ...<b>ז</b> ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירם אשר הם זנים אחריהם; חקת עולם תהיה זאת להם לדרתם׃ <b>ח</b> ואלהם תאמר איש איש מבית ישראל ומן הגר אשר יגור בתוכם; אשר יעלה עלה או זבח׃ <b>ט</b> ואל פתח אהל מועד לא יביאנו לעשות אתו לה׳ ונכרת האיש ההוא מעמיו׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק יז</footer></blockquote> <a href="/פרשת+אחרי+מות־קדושים+תשע״ח/">Last year</a> we talked about the meaning of the שעיר המשתלך in this context. This year I want to look at שעירם אשר הם זנים אחריהם. Who lusts after goats? What is the Torah talking about? It's clear from the context that the שעירים of פרק יז are different from the שעיר of פרק טז. Onkelos translates the words differently: <blockquote lang=he><p>וְיִסַּב יָת תְּרֵין <em>צְפִירִין</em>; וִיקִים יָתְהוֹן קֳדָם ה׳ בִּתְרַע מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא׃</p> <footer class=source>תרגום אונקלוס, ויקרא טז:ז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וְלָא יְדַבְּחוּן עוֹד יָת דִּבְחֵיהוֹן לְ<em>שֵׁידִין</em> דְּאִנּוּן טָעַן בָּתְרֵיהוֹן; קְיָם עָלַם תְּהֵי דָּא לְהוֹן לְדָרֵיהוֹן׃</p> <footer class=source>תרגום אונקלוס, ויקרא יז:ז</footer></blockquote> The animal שעיר is consistently translated צְפִיר. The word שֵׁד in modern Hebrew means "demon" (from the root שוד, "destruction"), and it is used that way once in the Torah: <blockquote lang=he><p>יזבחו לשדים לא אלה <br/> אלהים לא ידעום; <br/> חדשים מקרב באו <br/> לא שערום אבתיכם׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים לב:יז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>חדשים מקרב באו</em>: אֲפִלּוּ הָאֻמּוֹת לֹא הָיוּ רְגִילִים בָּהֶם—גּוֹי שֶׁהָיָה רוֹאֶה אוֹתָם, הָיָה אוֹמֵר זֶה צֶלֶם יְהוּדִי.</p> <p><em>לא שערום אבתיכם</em>: לֹא יָרְאוּ מֵהֶם—לֹא עָמְדָה שַׂעֲרָתָם מִפְּנֵיהֶם, דֶּרֶךְ שַׂעֲרוֹת הָאָדָם לַעֲמֹד מֵחֲמַת יִרְאָה, כָּךְ נִדְרַשׁ בְּסִפְרֵי. וְיֵשׁ לְפָרֵשׁ עוֹד שערום לְשׁוֹן (ישעיה יג:כא) ”וּשְׂעִירִים יְרַקְּדוּ שָׁם“, שְׂעִירִים הֵם שֵׁדִים, לֹא עָשׂוּ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם שְׂעִירִים הַלָּלוּ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> Ibn Ezra adds one connection between goats and demons in mythology, but he doesn't take that seriously: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>לשעירים</em>: הם השדים ונקראו כן בעבור שישתער הגוף הרואה אותם והקרוב בעבור שיראו אותם המשוגעים כדמות שעירים ומלת עוד תורה שכן היו ישראל עושין במצרים.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שם</footer></blockquote> <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Witch-Wardrobe-Chronicles-Narnia-2007-08-14/dp/B01LP8A5GE/"><img src=/images/The_Lion_the_Witch_and_the_Wardrobe.jpg alt="The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" /></a> Sforno adds that we are surrounded by these invisible harmful forces: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמנם בדבר השדים אשר לא נזכרה בריאתם ראוי להתבונן שהם ז׳׳ל קראום מזיקים והזכירו שהם אוכלים ושותים פרים ורבים ומתים ועם כל זה רואים ואינם נראים וכל אלו לא יאותו בהם זולתי בהיותם מורכבים מעצמים דקים נעדרי המראה.</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, שם</footer></blockquote> <hr/> This idea, that we are constantly surrounded by unseen forces, is from the gemara: <blockquote lang=he><p>תניא: אבא בנימין אומר: אלמלי נתנה רשות לעין לראות [רש״י: כל השדים העומדים לפניו] אין כל בריה יכולה לעמוד מפני המזיקין.</p> <p>אמר אביי: אינהו נפישי מינן וקיימי עלן כי כסלא לאוגיא.</p> <p>אמר רב הונא: כל חד וחד מינן אלפא משמאליה ורבבתא מימיניה.</p> <footer class=source>ברכות ו,א</footer></blockquote> But ה׳ protects us: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> מִדֶּבֶר בָּאֹפֶל יַהֲלֹךְ; מִקֶּטֶב יָשׁוּד צָהֳרָיִם׃<br/> <b>ז</b> יִפֹּל מִצִּדְּךָ אֶלֶף וּרְבָבָה מִימִינֶךָ; אֵלֶיךָ לֹא יִגָּשׁ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק צא</footer></blockquote> This seems very superstitious and primitive, but we actually believe that this is literally true: <blockquote lang=en><p>Were the myriad mazikin that constantly surround us visible to us, says Abba Binyamin (Berachos 6a), we would be frozen in terror. Whether he had in mind the fungi, protozoa, bacteria and viruses that regularly seek to invade our bodies must remain speculation. But, regarding the countless organisms that would, were it not for our immune systems, do us great harm, the statement would have been entirely true.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Avi Shafran, <a href="https://cross-currents.com/2016/07/16/subway-polessnakes-on-poles/"><cite>Subway Poles/Snakes on Poles</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Rabbi Slifkin, of the Rationalist Judaism website, is bothered by this statement: <blockquote lang=en><p>Personally, I think that "wishful thinking" would be a better description than "speculation." It is, frankly, rather odd to posit that Chazal knew about such microscopic phenomena. First of all, considering how many very basic things about the natural world they did not know, such as the sun's path at night, why on earth would they have known about microscopic phenomena? Second, if they did indeed know about bacteria and viruses, then why on earth didn't they issue basic medical advice which would have saved countless lives over history, instead of all kinds of bizarre potions and procedures?</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Natan Slifkin, <a href="http://www.rationalistjudaism.com/2016/07/ghosts-demons-and-bacteria.html"><cite>Ghosts, Demons, and Bacteria</cite></a></footer></blockquote> But I think he is taking Rabbi Shafran too literally. I don't think חז״ל envisioned gram negative rods producing endotoxins that stimulate cytokine release and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome. This idea, that all around us are things we can't see that are out to get us, is common and universal. Rabbi Shafran cites an example in ספר במדבר: <blockquote lang=he><p>וַיְשַׁלַּח ה׳ בָּעָם אֵת הַנְּחָשִׁים הַשְּׂרָפִים וַיְנַשְּׁכוּ אֶת הָעָם; וַיָּמָת עַם רָב מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר כא:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ועוד שנענשו בעונש זה, כי הנחשים האלו שנענשו בהם היו הנחשים עצמן שהיו במדבר למינין הרבה, הוא שכתוב (דברים ח:טו) הַמּוֹלִיכֲךָ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַגָּדֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא נָחָשׁ שָׂרָף וְעַקְרָב וְצִמָּאוֹן אֲשֶׁר אֵין מָיִם, וכל ארבעים שנה לא נזוק בהם אחד מישראל.</p> <footer class=source>רבנו בחיי, שם</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>שָׁלַח in the <i lang=he>Kal</i> means "to send", "to put something in motion towards a goal". But שַׁלֵּחַ in <i lang=he>Piel</i>...has the meaning of letting something go...not to hold it back...Here, too, not “G-d <em>sent</em> serpents” but "let them go"...Hence not נְחָשִׁים שְׂרָפִים but הַנְּחָשִׁים הַשְּׂרָפִים; they had always been there in the wilderness but hitherto they had been kept back by G-d's careful protecting Power. Now G-d withdraws this restraining power, and the serpents of the wilderness follow their natural traits to which the people succumbed.</p> <footer class=source>Hirsch Chumash, Numbers XXI:6</footer></blockquote> <hr/> What does this have to do with ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירם אשר הם זנים אחריהם? There are two approaches to the דֶּבֶר בָּאֹפֶל יַהֲלֹךְ represented by these שעירים. Do we see them as implacable forces of evil that need to be appeased, or are they part of the בריאה, G-d's created universe, subject to the same laws of nature as the observable universe?
