We are continuing משלי פרק יג. {:he} >ריש וקלון פורע מוסר; ושמר תוכחת יכבד׃ --משלי יג:יח ריש וקלון פורע מוסר: poverty and shame for those who are פורע מוסר.‎ פורע means "loosen, uncover". {:he} >והעמיד הכהן את האשה לפני ה׳ ופרע את ראש האשה ונתן על כפיה את מנחת הזכרון מנחת קנאת הוא; וביד הכהן יהיו מי המרים המאררים׃ --במדבר ה:יח But it is often used in תנ״ך in the metaphoric sense of "wanton, unbound by law": {:he} > וירא משה את העם כי פרע הוא; כי פרעה אהרן לשמצה בקמיהם׃ --שמות לב:כה And Devorah describes the moral state in Israel as פרע פרעות: {:he} >בפרע פרעות בישראל; בהתנדב עם ברכו ה׳׃ --שופטים ה:ב But some dedicated themselves to ה׳:‎ בהתנדב עם. {:he} ><em>בפרוע</em>: אמרה בעת שישראל פרוע...שפרעו מוסר...אז בהתנדב עם. אם ימצא עם מתנדבים לעשות חיל, אין זה ענין טבעי רק אלקי, ולכן ”ברכו ה'“ כי מידו היתה זאת. --מלבי"ם, שופטים ה:ב So too here, Shlomo contrasts society that is פורע מוסר, unbound by morality that makes everyone poor and demeaned, with those who accept rebuke: שמר תוכחת יכבד. Those are the ones who are high status. But in order to listen to תוכחה, you still have to be part of society. {:.lines} >If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch... We need to be part of a larger society but have to be able to rise above that. Never by rejecting others, in part because כבוד, status, is important. {:he} >בן זומא אומר:איזהו חכם? הלומד מכל אדם... > איזהו מכבד? המכבד את הבריות. --משנה אבות ד:א {:he} ><em>לאהבה את ה'</em>:...כל מה שתעשה עשה מאהבה וסוף הכבוד לבא. --רש"י, דברים יא:יג כבוד is paradoxical. Don't run after it but act in a way that others will respect you, and you will have כבוד. And that will make society as a whole a better place. ---- Then Shlomo changes directions. {:he} >תאוה נהיה תערב לנפש; ותועבת כסילים סור מרע׃ --משלי יג:יט {:he} ><em>תאוה נהיה</em>: מודיע שהכסיל אינו פתי כי הוא יודע חקי החכמה, ואם לא היתה התאוה שתאלצהו היה סר מרע ע"פ חקי החכמה, אבל מפני שתאוה נהיה תערב לנפש, הגם שאין בתאוה טוב ומועיל יש בו ערבות לנפש הבהמיות, והוא אינו יכול לנצח תאותו מפני הערב, כי בוחר בערב על הטוב ומועיל ולכן תועבת כסילים סור מרע, כי רוצה בערב. --מלבי"ם, משלי יג:יט We cannot become better people by rejecting our human nature. We become better people by using that nature to be better. The purpose of מוסר is to develop the pleasure we get from righteous action, so we do it more. That's not a bad thing. ---- And we develop that sense by the company we keep. {:he .lines} ><b>כ</b> הלוך הולך את חכמים וחכם יחכם; ורעה כסילים ירוע׃ <b>כא</b> חטאים תרדף רעה; ואת צדיקים ישלם טוב׃ --משלי פרק יג David said the same thing in the first perek of תהילים: {:he .lines} >אשרי האיש אשר לא הלך בעצת רשעים; ובדרך חטאים לא עמד ובמושב לצים לא ישב׃ --תהילים א:א Your values are determined by the company you keep. {:he} >(במדבר טז:א) <em>ויקח קרח...ודתן ואבירם</em>: מכאן אמרו אוי לרשע אוי לשכנו. דתן ואבירם לפי שהיו שכנים של קרח שהיה שרוי בדרום, דכתיב (במדבר ג:כט): מִשְׁפְּחֹת בְּנֵי קְהָת יַחֲנוּ עַל יֶרֶךְ הַמִּשְׁכָּן תֵּימָנָה, דגלו של ראובן סמוך להם, שנאמר (במדבר ב:י): דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן תֵּימָנָה. > אבל דגלו של יהודה היה במזרח, ויששכר וזבולון עמו, שנאמר (במדבר ב:ג): וְהַחֹנִים קֵדְמָה מִזְרָחָה דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה, וסמוכין להן משה ואהרן, דכתיב (במדבר ג:לח): וְהַחֹנִים לִפְנֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן קֵדְמָה לִפְנֵי אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד מִזְרָחָה מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו, לפי שהיו אלו סמוכין לתורה, זכו להיות בני תורה, כדכתיב (תהלים ס:ט): יְהוּדָה מְחֹקְקִי, וכתיב (דברי הימים א יב:לג): וּמִבְּנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר יוֹדְעֵי בִינָה לַעִתִּים, וכתיב (שופטים ה:יד): וּמִזְּבוּלֻן מֹשְׁכִים בְּשֵׁבֶט סֹפֵר. > ודתן ואבירם שהיו שכנים לקראת בעל מחלקת לקו עמו ואבדו מן העולם. --במדבר רבה יח:ה {:he} ><b>א</b> דרך בריתו של אדם להיות נמשך בדעותיו ובמעשיו אחר רעיו וחבריו ונוהג כמנהג אנשי מדינתו. לפיכך צריך אדם להתחבר לצדיקים ולישב אצל החכמים תמיד כדי שילמד ממעשיהם. ויתרחק מן הרשעים ההולכים בחשך כדי שלא ילמד ממעשיהם. הוא ששלמה אומר הוֹלֵךְ אֶת חֲכָמִים יֶחְכָּם וְרֹעֶה כְסִילִים יֵרוֹעַ. ואומר אַשְׁרֵי הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר  לֹא הָלַךְ בַּעֲצַת רְשָׁעִים. וכן אם היה במדינה שמנהגותיה רעים ואין אנשיה הולכים בדרך ישרה ילך למקום שאנשיה צדיקים ונוהגים בדרך טובים. ואם היו כל המדינות שהוא יודעם ושומע שמועתן נוהגים בדרך לא טובה כמו זמננו. או שאינו יכול ללכת מדינה שמנהגותיה טובים מפני הגיסות או מפני החלי ישב לבדו יחידי כענין שנאמר (איכה ג:כח) יֵשֵׁב בָּדָד וְיִדֹּם. ואם היו רעים וחטאים שאין מניחים אותו לישב במדינה אלא אם כן נתערב עמהן ונוהג במנהגם הרע יצא למערות ולחוחים ולמדברות. ואל ינהיג עצמו בדרך חטאים כענין שנאמר (ירמיה ט:א) מִי יִתְּנֵנִי בַמִּדְבָּר מְלוֹן אֹרְחִים. > <b>ב</b> מצות עשה להדבק בחכמים ותלמידיהם כדי ללמד ממעשיהם כענין שנאמר ובו תדבק. וכי אפשר לאדם להדבק בשכינה. אלא כך אמרו חכמים בפרוש מצוה זו, הדבק בחכמים ותלמידיהם. לפיכך צריך אדם להשתדל שישא בת תלמיד חכם וישיא בתו לתלמיד חכם ולאכל ולשתות עם תלמידי חכמים ולעשות פרקמטיא לתלמיד חכם ולהתחבר להן בכל מיני חבור שנאמר ולדבקה בו. וכן צוו חכמים ואמרו (משנה אבות א:ד) ”והוי מתאבק בעפר רגליהם ושותה בצמא את דבריהם“. --משנה תורה, הלכות דעות פרק ו The problem is that this is incompatible with ושמר תוכחת יכבד above. We have to be part of society even when that society is not perfect (because no society is perfect). There is no simple answer. ---- Then Shlomo turns to grandchildren. {:he} >טוב ינחיל בני בנים; וצפון לצדיק חיל חוטא׃ --משלי יג:כב The midrash connects this to the previous pasuk. {:he} ><em>חטאים תרדף רעה</em>: תרדף רעה להם ולבניהם ולבני בניהם עד סוף כל הדורות. וְאֶת צַדִּיקִים יְשַׁלֶּם טוֹב--שישלם שכר להם ולבניהם עד סוף כל הדורות. מה כתיב אחריו? טוֹב יַנְחִיל בְּנֵי בָנִים. מכאן אתה למד, שמנחיל טובות לבניו ולבני בניו. --מדרש משלי יג:ב {:he} >טוב ינחיל בני בנים, אחר שאמר שהרע תרדוף החוטא, ושה' ישלם טוב לצדיקים, משיב לעומת מה שאנו רואים לפעמים שהצדיקים יש להם יסורים והרשעים בשלוה, עז"א אם תראה שהצדיק לא קבל שכרו, הוא מפני שהטוב ינחיל בני בנים, וה' ישלם שכרו לבניו ולדורותיו אחריו...ואם תראה הרשע עומד בעשרו דע כי חיל חוטא צפון לצדיק, והוא רק שומר עליו, עד שיבא הצדיק ויירשנו. --מלבי"ם, משלי יג:כב That is talking about the spiritual reward for being a צדיק. But there is a more metaphorical sense: טוב ינחיל בני בנים means the good we do is left for our grandchildren. We know how well we've raised our children when we see how they raise *their* children. What we bequeath to our grandchildren is not money, it's their parents. טוב ינחיל בני בנים; your good is inherited by future generations. But חיל חוטא is צפון לצדיק: if you are a חוטא you and your children will just be an object lesson for others. >[R]esearchers have found a strong association between harsh and aggressive parenting between generations.
