Shmuel also fought against unjust authority, for the right for every individual to serve ืืณ. The first perek we will look at, however, seems to be advertising copy or pro-government propaganda.

Malbim says that we are misinterpreting the introductory psukim. It is true that the praise of Jerusalem is about its beauty and the greatness of the Israelite king, but those who praise it are missing the point.

ืื ื ืงืจื are saying that itโs not about the king, itโs about ืืงืืดื. The power of earthly kings, no matter how much they are ืืื ืจื, is irrelevant compared to the greatness of ืืงืืดื.

Itโs not clear if this ืืืืื ื ืืขืื, the assembly of kings, is meant to represent an actual event, a war against Jerusalem or an international conference. There is one event in ืชื ืดื that features ืื ืืืช ืชืจืฉืืฉ as a fleet that was destroyed:

But that doesnโt fit the context here, of ืืืืืื ื ืืขืื; ืขืืจื ืืืื.
ืชืจืฉืืฉ is depicted as a distant port (thatโs where Yonah tries to run to) but here I think it is a metaphor.

ืื ืืืช ืชืจืฉืืฉ is a symbol of high technology, of manโs control of his world. That control is only an illusion. Jerusalem as ืงืจืืช ืืื ืจื is transitory: ืฉื ืืืืืช ืืืื ืืฉืคื ืจืื ืื ืฉืื. The only thing that matters is ืืืงืื ืืืื ื ื ืขื ืขืืื. And that is the message of ืื ื ืงืจื.
Donโt be too proud of this technological terror youโve constructed.
The second half of the perek explains what it means, to be the city of ืืณ:

ืขึทืึพืืึผืช literally means โuntil deathโ, but the Allepo Codex and other ancient sources have it as one word, which gives it three additional layers of meaning:

The next perek is a lament, as the psalmist pines for the lost Jerusalem.

Even the birds can find their place by the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ, but I am lost, yearning for that holy place. He doesnโt say where he is, or why he cannot get closer to ืืืื ืืืืงื. All we know is ืืฉืจื ืืืฉืื ืืืชื: happy are those who are there.
Then he turns to a different kind of ืืฉืจื: those who struggle and suffer:

The psalmist says those who find their strength in ืืณ, and find the path forward in their own hearts, are also happy. They are traveling through ืขืืง ืืืื, literally โthe valley of weepingโ, but they see it as a ืืขืื, a life-giving spring, as though their ืืึนืจึถื, their Teacher and Guide, had enveloped it with ืืจืืืช.
But who is he addressing? Is this meant to be after the ืืืจืื? Is the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ standing, but the psalmist is in exile?

ืื ืื ืืื ืืื ืืืฆืจืื ืืืืฃ;

This section implies that there is a ืืื and a ืืฉืื, that there is a ืืืืืช ืืฉืจืื in power. So what is he complaining about?
ืืืจ ืื ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื: ืึผึดื ืืึนื ืืึนื ืึผึทืึฒืฆึตืจึถืืึธ ืึตืึธืึถืฃโืืื ืื ืืื ืืื ืฉืืชื ืขืืกืง ืืชืืจื ืืคื ื, ืืืืฃ ืขืืืืช ืฉืขืชืื ืฉืืื ืื ื ืืืงืจืื ืืคื ื ืขื ืืื ืืืืื.
This is ืื ื ืงืจื, looking at what purports to be the ืืืช ืืืืงืื but only seeing ืืืื ืจืฉืข. They are speaking truth to power. David himself complained about the corruption in Jerusalem:

And I think that is what ืื ื ืงืจื are yearning for here. They want to achieve the ideal ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ, a place of ืืฉืคื ืืฆืืงื.

The ultimate good will come to the ืืืืื ืืชืืื, and there is a ray of hope at the end. There is a third person who is ืืฉืจื, not the one in ืืืชื, not the one who sees ืืกืืืช ืืืืื, who is on the way, but just having faith is enough.
The next ืชืืืื I want to look act actually comes earlier in the ืกืคืจ,and composed of two different perakim but are clearly one whole (the second has no ืืืชืจืช and has the same refrain as the first).
The refrain appears three times (with minor variations) is the psalmist talking to himself, telling his soul not to despair. It is sort of an answer to the previous perek.

The first stanza has the same theme as the previous perek: all I want is to be close to ืืณ.

Itโs very poignant, describing how he yearns for the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ, and how those around him mock him with ืืื ืืืงืื. Then he says ืืื ืืืืจืโฆืื ืืขืืจ ืืกื. That could be read as remembering the past, when he would come to the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ with the crowds but ืื ืืขืืจ is in the future tense, or the continuing present. โEven as I enter the ืกื, the shelter, among the ืืืื ืืืื, I hear the mocking ืืื ืืืงืื.โ
As we said about the previous perek, he is describing a situation where the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ exists, but it is meaningless. It is like he is in some kind of internal exile, like ืืืืช ืืื and the story behind ืื ืืื
ืืืื ืืฉื ืช ืืื ืืืจืืขืื ืืืืฉ, ืืืืฉื ืขืฉืจ ืืื ืืืืืฉ ืืกืื, ืืืงืืื ืฉืืงืืฅ ืืฉืืื ืขื ืืืื ืืณ, ืืืื ื ืืืืช ืืื ืขืจื ืืืืื ืืกืืื.
The mockers who say ืืื ืืืงืื are Jews; The ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ exists but has a statue of Zeus, as it were. ืื ื ืงืจื are just like Shmuel protesting the corruption of the ืืฉืื; they yearn for what the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ once was. And just like the victory over the ืืชืืืื ืื resulted in Chanukah, the holiday ืืืืืืช ืืืืื; here ืื ื ืงืจื promise that the opportunity ืืืืืืช will return: ืขืื ืืืื ื ืืฉืืขืืช ืคื ืื.
The second stanza is the psalmistโs complaint to ืืณ:

He calls out to ืืณ from ืืืจืืื ืื ืืืจ ืืฆืขืจ, which is a merism meaning โfrom North and Southโ (ืืจ ืืจืืื is in the Golan, and ืฆืืขืจ is on the southern tip of the Dead Sea). It is the equivalent of a more common phrase:
ืืืืข ืื ืืฉืจืื ืืื ืืขื ืืืจ ืฉืืข; ืื ื ืืื ืฉืืืื ืื ืืื ืืืณื
But the difference is that this expression uses isolated locations rather than population centers to express โall of Israelโ. Itโs similar to the idea of the internal exile of the previous stanza. The psalmist is saying, I am here in Israel but I donโt belong.
And then he says ืชืืื ืื ืชืืื ืงืืจื ืืงืื ืฆื ืืจืื, โDeep calls to deep with the sound of Your waterwaysโ. Itโs a very mysterious pasuk. Aviva Zornberg titled one of her books The Murmuring Deep, based on this pasuk. She connects it to the primordial ืชืืื:
ืืืืจืฅ ืืืชื ืชืื ืืืื ืืืฉื ืขื ืคื ื ืชืืื; ืืจืื ืืืงืื ืืจืืคืช ืขื ืคื ื ืืืืื
And sees ืชืืื as a portmanteau of ืชืื, chaos, and ืืืืื, murmur.
Tohuโtha appalling nature of this realityโis echoed in the word tehom. Normally translated โthe deepโโthe dark, watery mass that G-dโs words transfigureโtehom is, in the evocative version cited by Frosh, rendered โthe murmuring deepโ. This poetic reading conveys some of the complex harmonics of tehom: the Hebrew roots hamam, hamah, hom cover meanings like humming, murmuringโฆrestlessness, stirring, panic. A large register of tones and sounds and movementsโฆ
The image is one of trying to hear ืืณ's voice but being overwhelmed by chaos. He started in the previous stanza with ืฆืืื ื ืคืฉื ืืืืงืื, seeking the ืึพื ืื, the โLiving G-dโ but all he can feel now is ืึพื ืึทืึผึธื, โG-d of my lifeโ. I am alive, but I donโt feel that ืืณ is. He started yearning for ืืณ like ืืื ืชืขืจื ืขื ืืคืืงื ืืื, but now the water becomes a symbol of what he cannot attain. The roar of the world drowns out the connection to ืืณ that he seeks.
He complains that his ืชืคืื is โืืืื ืืฆืื ืืณ ืืกืืโ, and he sings ืืณ's praises. He is davening all the right words, but still โืืื ืฉืืืชื ืโ? He asks, ืึธืึผึธื ืงึนืึตืจ ืึตืึตืึฐ, โWhy do I walk in darknessโ; ืงึนืึตืจ is a metaphor for not seeing ืืณ:
