We have looked at most of ספר תהילים though the lens of the life of David. I want to finish our study of תהילים by looking at some of the different kinds of psalms that David wrote. The gemara says that there are ten different kinds: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר ריב״ל בעשרה מאמרות של שבח נאמר ספר תהלים בניצוח בנגון במשכיל במזמור בשיר באשרי בתהלה בתפלה בהודאה בהללוי־ה גדול מכולן.</p> <footer class=source>פסחים קיז,ב</footer></blockquote> And the Zohar (תקוני זהר יג) has a slightly different list, and associates each type with one of the עשר ספירות, which is largely the approach I take. This is how I would like to read ספר תהילים: {:he} | מאמר של שבח | ספירה | |----------------|-------| | אישור | כתר | שיר | חכמה | זמר | בינה | ברכה | חסד | נגון | גבורה | הלל | תפארת | נצוח | נצח | הודאה | הוד | רינה | יסוד | תפלה | מלכות But Rabbi Baumol warns that we don't really know what the titles mean. <blockquote><ol type=a> <li>Don't spend too much time on the title; no one knows what <i lang=he>lamenatzeich</i> really refers to so just accept one of the approaches.</li> <li>Don't spend too much time on whether David was the author; accept it like you accept that Moshe was the author of the word of G-d.</li> <li>Don't get bogged down on words; some of them are hard and it is the theme that is crucial, not the word itself.</li> <li>Don't limit yourself to what others say--<i lang=he>mefarshim</i> or teachers--“<i lang=he>vechapatish yfotzeitz sela</i>”.</li> </ol> <footer class=source>Rabbi Avi Baumol, <a href=https://www.gefenpublishing.com/product.asp?productid=715 ><cite>The Poetry of Prayer: Tehillim in Tefillah</cite></a>, p. 290: <cite>Appendix 2: Methods to Analyze Tehillim: Ideas for Teachers</cite>, "Don'ts"</footer></blockquote> But I am utterly unqualified and so utterly unconstrained and will look at some of the תהילים titled מזמור. I associate it with the ספירה of בינה, analytic wisdom, which goes with the מידה of דין. A מזמור is a psalm of ה׳'s trancendance, separation from us. Rav Hutner explains: {:he} >...”זמרה“ ענינה לשון קילוס. ועוד עניין אחד מצינו בשורש תיבת זמרה, שמתפרש הוא גם בלשון הכרתה, וכגון זומר דל"ט מלאכות. וגם במקרא הוא משמש כמה פעמים בלשון זה. שותפות זו של ענין קילוס וענין הכרתה בשורש אחד של זמר, מתבארת היא על פי ההבנה כי פסגת הקילוס היא כשהמקלס מרבה להתפעל כל כך מגודל מעלתו של המתקלס עד שהוא מתבטל מהרגשת מציאותו, והרי זה כמכרית את ישותו. והיינו שקילוס והכרתה יש להם שורש משותף, מפני שהכרתת הרגשת ישותו של הקטן בפני מי שגדול ממנו, היא היא קילוסו של הגדול. אלא שמכל מקום אין הכוונה בלשון זמרה לסתם דברי קילוס, אלא שהכוונה היא לדברי קילוס הנאמרים בלשון שירה דוקא. כלומר, דברי קילוס סתם ענינם הוא ביטוי התבטלותו של הקטן בפני מי שגדול ממנו; ואילו קילוס-של-זמרה ענינו הוא ביטוי התענוג של הרגשת ההתבטלות בפני מי שגדול ממנו. וכאן הוא ההבדל בין השיר של עבודת השם ובין המזמור של עבודת השם. דהשיר הוא ביטוי התענוג של הרגשת ההשתייכות וההמשכה, והמזמור הוא ביטוי התענוג של הרגשת הנשגביות וההפלאה. וממילא יוצא מזה כי ביטוי התענוג של תנועת ההתפשטות בעבודת השם הוא תוכנו של השיר; והביטוי של התענוג של תנועת ההתכווצות [הוא תוכנו של המזמור]. --פחד יצחק פסח נד:ח In other words, שיר is a celebration of אהבת ה׳;‎ זמרה is a celebration of יראת ה׳. We talked about "שיר" in <//Old Wives’ Tales>. Now I want to look at "מזמור". The most well-known מזמור is תהילים פרק כט. {:he .lines} ><b>א</b> מזמור לדוד; הבו לה׳ בני אלים; הבו לה׳ כבוד ועז׃ <b>ב</b> הבו לה׳ כבוד שמו; השתחוו לה׳ בהדרת קדש׃ --תהילים פרק כט This may be a מזמור , a psalm of יראה, but is clearly a happy, celebratory psalm. As Dick Clark [might have said](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/bp/12-memorable-american-bandstand-moments-003645394.html), "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it". It is addressed to the בני אלים, the powerful and elite. Don't be so proud of yourselves; you need to bow to הקב״ה:‎ השתחוו לה׳ בהדרת קדש. This introduction is borrowed from תהילים צו (which I will assume is earlier; it is one of the תהילים attributed to Moshe): {:he .lines} ><b>ז</b> הבו לה׳ משפחות עמים; הבו לה׳ כבוד ועז׃ <b>ח</b> הבו לה׳ כבוד שמו... <b>ט</b> השתחוו לה׳ בהדרת קדש... --תהילים פרק צו But that is a שיר (it starts שירו לה׳ שיר חדש) about all the nations singing to G-d together ((תהילים צו:יא) יִשְׂמְחוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתָגֵל הָאָרֶץ), where our perek is about ה׳'s awesome power, as manifest in קול ה׳: {:he} ><b>ג</b> קול ה׳ על המים;<br/> אל הכבוד הרעים; ה׳ על מים רבים׃<br/> <b>ד</b> קול ה׳ בכח; קול ה׳ בהדר׃<br/> <b>ה</b> קול ה׳ שבר ארזים; וישבר ה׳ את ארזי הלבנון׃<br/> <b>ו</b> וירקידם כמו עגל; לבנון ושרין כמו בן ראמים׃<br/> <b>ז</b> קול ה׳ חצב להבות אש׃<br/> <b>ח</b> קול ה׳ יחיל מדבר; יחיל ה׳ מדבר קדש׃<br/> <b>ט</b> קול ה׳ יחולל אילות ויחשף יערות;<br/> ובהיכלו כלו אמר כבוד׃ --תהילים פרק כט What is קול ה׳? There is a hint in the line וירקידם כמו עגל; לבנון ושרין כמו בן ראמים. {:he .lines} ><b>א</b> בצאת ישראל ממצרים; בית יעקב מעם לעז... <b>ד</b> ההרים רקדו כאילים; גבעות כבני צאן׃ --תהילים פרק קיד קול ה׳ in the world is a reference to giving the Torah. {:he} >וכל העם ראים את הקולת ואת הלפידם ואת קול השפר ואת ההר עשן; וירא העם וינעו ויעמדו מרחק׃ --שמות כ:יד {:he} >אמר מר: מאי דכתיב ”וכל העם רואים את הקולות ואת הלפידים“, וכי נראים קולות? אלא וכל העם רואים את הקולות; אותן קולות שאמר דוד ”קול ה' על המים אל הכבוד הרעים ה'...קול ה' בכח“...”קול ה' חוצב להבות אש“ זה שעושה שלום בין המים ובין האש...הא למדת שבשבע קולות ניתנה תורה, ובכלם נגלה אדון העולם עליהם וראוהו והיינו דכתיב וכל העם רואים את הקולות. --ספר הבהיר, מה But קול ה׳ was not a one-time event. {:he} >ובבא משה אל אהל מועד לדבר אתו וישמע את הקול מדבר אליו מעל הכפרת אשר על ארן העדת מבין שני הכרבים; וידבר אליו׃ --במדבר ז:פט {:he} ><em>וישמע את הקול מדבר אליו</em>: יכול שהיה קול נמוך, תלמוד לומר: את *ה*קול, ”קול“ לא נאמר אלא ”הקול“, הוא הקול המתפרש בכתובים. ומה הוא הקול המתפרש בכתובים? ”קול ה' בכח קול ה' בהדר, קול ה' שבר ארזים, קול ה' חצב להבות אש, קול ה' יחיל מדבר, קול ה' יחולל אילות“. יכול שהיו שומעים אותו מבחוץ, תלמוד לומר (ויקרא א:א): וַיְדַבֵּר ה' אֵלָיו מֵאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד, מלמד שהיה הקול נפסק ולא היה יוצא חוץ לאהל. כיוצא בו אתה אומר (יחזקאל י:ה): וְקוֹל כַּנְפֵי הַכְּרוּבִים נִשְׁמַע עַד הֶחָצֵר הַחִיצֹנָה, יכול מפני שהיה קול נמוך, תלמוד לומר (יחזקאל י:ה): כְּקוֹל אֵ־ל שַׁדַּ־י בְּדַבְּרוֹ. אם כן למה נאמר: ”נשמע עד החצר החיצנה“? אלא כיון שהיה מגיע עד החצר החיצנה, היה נפסק. --במדבר רבה יד:כא קול ה׳ manifests in different ways, both as קול ה׳ בכח and אליהו's קול דממה דקה {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויאמר צא ועמדת בהר לפני ה׳ והנה ה׳ עבר ורוח גדולה וחזק מפרק הרים ומשבר סלעים לפני ה׳ לא ברוח ה׳; ואחר הרוח רעש לא ברעש ה׳׃ <b>יב</b> ואחר הרעש אש לא באש ה׳; ואחר האש קול דממה דקה׃ <b>יג</b> ויהי כשמע אליהו וילט פניו באדרתו ויצא ויעמד פתח המערה; והנה אליו קול ויאמר מה לך פה אליהו׃ --מלכים א פרק יט We have cited Robert Cover before: >We inhabit a {:la}/nomos/--a normative universe. We constantly create and maintain a world of right and wrong, of lawful and unlawful, of valid and void. --Robert Cover, [_Nomos and Narrative_](https://openyls.law.yale.edu/bitstream/handle/20.500.13051/2047/Nomos_and_Narrative.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y) The seven קולות represent the seven days of creation; not the creation of the physical universe, but of the normative universe. We can hear the voice of ה׳ in acting according to His rules. That voice can be overwhelming but at the same time it can only be appreciated by those who are prepared to hear it. But this מזמור is not simply a paean to ה׳'s voice in the world. It starts with קול ה׳ על המים and ends with a reference to the flood: {:he} ><b>י</b> ה׳ למבול ישב; וישב ה׳ מלך לעולם׃<br/> <b>יא</b> ה׳ עז לעמו יתן; ה׳ יברך את עמו בשלום׃ --תהילים פרק כט We have talked about the מבול as a symbol for the [chaos of a world without rules](/Syr+hmAlvT/); without ה׳ as מלך לעולם, then the world drowns in the "Gossip Trap". >...A “Gossip Trap” is when...to organize your society you are forced to discuss mostly people. It is [_Mean Girls_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_Girls) (and mean boys), but forever...Everyone just lives like crabs in a bucket, pulling each other down. All cognitive resources go to reputation management in the group, leaving nothing left in the tank for invention or creativity or art or engineering. If we do not listen to קול ה׳, the world drowns: ה׳ למבול ישב. ---- The next מזמור I want to look at is not a paean but a prayer, referring not to קול ה׳ but קולי: {:he} ><b>א</b> מזמור לדוד;<br/> ה׳ קראתיך חושה לי; האזינה קולי בקראי לך׃<br/> <b>ב</b> תכון תפלתי קטרת לפניך; משאת כפי מנחת ערב׃<br/> <b>ג</b> שיתה ה׳ שמרה לפי; נצרה על דל שפתי׃<br/> <b>ד</b> אל תט לבי לדבר רע <br/> להתעולל עללות ברשע <br/> את אישים פעלי און;<br/> ובל אלחם במנעמיהם׃ --תהילים פרק קמא And it is specifically a תפילה to protect him from his own speech. We end our עמידה with a similar idea: {:he} >מר בריה דרבינא כי הוה מסיים צלותיה אמר הכי: אלקי, נצור לשוני מרע ושפתותי מדבר מרמה, ולמקללי נפשי תדום, ונפשי כעפר לכל תהיה. פתח לבי בתורתך, ובמצותיך תרדוף נפשי... --ברכות יז,א In תהילים פרק כט we concluded that the world needs ה׳'s help to save it from itself. Here, David says he needs ה׳'s help to save himself from his own יצר הרע:‎ תט לבי לדבר רע. The simile that he uses is that his prayer should be like קטרת, which is the symbol of אחדות ישראל. It the opposite of לשון הרע. <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ר חנא בר בזנא א"ר שמעון חסידא כל תענית שאין בה מפושעי ישראל אינה תענית. שהרי חלבנה ריחה רע ומנאה הכתוב עם סממני קטרת.</p> <footer class=source>כריתות ו,ב</footer></blockquote> לשון הרע is very seductive because it is at the basis of what makes us human: we are social primates, and our self-identity depends on what we think others think of us. Everything we do has a level of status-seeking, which is why the lawless "state of nature" *is* the "gossip trap". David acknowledges that, אל תט לבי לדבר רע and prays that ובל אלחם במנעמיהם, "Let me not eat of their sweet delicacies". {:he} ><em>במנעמיהם</em>: מלשון נעימות וענינו מתוק וערב. --מצודת ציון, תהילים קמא:ד And part of the poetry here is the sense that his language has gotten out of control. He makes up words, דל from דלת,‎ אישים instead of אנשים, and אלחם as the verbed לחם. And then the next three psukim are, as פיבל מלצר says, "מן שפסוקים הסתומים ביותר בספר תהילים". >Meaning of vv. 5–7 uncertain. --JPS Tanach 1985, Psalm 141, footnote a {:he} ><b>ה</b> יהלמני צדיק חסד ויוכיחני <br/> שמן ראש אל יני ראשי;<br/> כי עוד ותפלתי ברעותיהם׃<br/> <b>ו</b> נשמטו בידי סלע שפטיהם; ושמעו אמרי כי נעמו׃<br/> <b>ז</b> כמו פלח ובקע בארץ נפזרו עצמינו לפי שאול׃ --תהילים פרק קמא {:he} ><em>יהלמני</em>: ענין הכאה המשברת כמו (שופטים ה:כו) וְהָלְמָה סִיסְרָא. > <em>יני</em>: ענין הסרה ומניעה כמו (במדבר ל:ו) וְאִם הֵנִיא אָבִיהָ. --מצודת ציון, תהילים קמא:ה So פסוק ה means, "May the righteous hit me with mercy and reproach me; may it be like oil on my head that it does not reject. Even when I am criticisized, may I not react defensively but continue my prayer to be saved from the evil I mentioned in פסוק ד". The next pasuk is completely mystifying. I like the way the Alshich interprets it (based on the Sifrei): {:he} >המקום מזכיר ג' פעמים: מי מריבה, מי מריבה, מי מריבה, לומר: כך הרגתי את אהרן, כך הרגתי את משה! וכן הוא אומר (תהלים קמא:ו) ”נשמטו בידי סלע שופטיהם“. --ספרי דברים כו:ג {:he} >כי הלא ראיתי נשמטו בידי סלע שופטיהם, הם משה ואהרן שנשמטו מליכנס לארץ על דבר הסלע על אמור (במדבר כ:י) שִׁמְעוּ נָא הַמֹּרִים, עם היותם חוטאים, כי רצונו יתברך בל יגעו בכבוד בניו. --אלשיך, תהילים קמא:ו Moshe's response after מי מריבה is an example of how to respond to criticism and punishment. שמעו אמרי כי נעמו:‎ ה׳'s rebuke is sweet, נעים, not the לשון הרע of the רשעים, even if נפזרו עצמינו לפי שאול. {:he} >דהיינו הגם שנפול מהסלע לעומק שאול, ועצמינו יפזרו על ידי הנפילה הזאת כאלו נפלחה ונבקעה האדמה אשר תחתינו. --מלבי"ם,תהילים קמא:ז And then David ends this section with the acknowledgement that human beings are finite and mortal. The only authority is הקב״ה. And the perek ends as it began, with a prayer to be saved from the trap of wickedness: {:he} ><b>ח</b> כי אליך ה׳ אדנ־י עיני; בכה חסיתי אל תער נפשי׃<br/> <b>ט</b> שמרני מידי פח יקשו לי; ומקשות פעלי און׃<br/> <b>י</b> יפלו במכמריו רשעים; יחד אנכי עד אעבור׃</p> --תהילים פרק קמא ---- The next מזמור I want to look at is also a prayer, but it doesn't really say what it is a prayer *for*. David asks to be saved from his enemies. {:he} ><b>א</b> מזמור לדוד;<br/> ה׳ שמע תפלתי האזינה אל תחנוני;<br/> באמנתך ענני בצדקתך׃<br/> <b>ב</b> ואל תבוא במשפט את עבדך;<br/> כי לא יצדק לפניך כל חי׃ --תהילים פרק קמג What does David mean, when he asks that ה׳ answer באמנתך? When we talk about ה׳'s אמונה, what do we mean? We mention it every morning: {:he} >מודה אני לפניך מלך חי וקיים שהחזרת בי נשמתי בחמלה; רבה אמונתך. --תפילת השכמת הבוקר Which is based on the pasuk from איכה: {:he} >חדשים לבקרים רבה אמונתך׃ --איכה ג:כג ה׳ restores us every day באמונה, with faith. Rav Kook says that is ה׳'s faith in *us*; despite everything that we did wrong yesterday, we deserve another chance to fulfill our role in the world. {:he} ><em>רבה אמונתך</em>: האמונה האלקית היא החוקקת את התפקידים של כל כחות ההויה, שיעשו את עבודתם בכל עז ומרץ. --הרב אברהם יצחק הכהן קוק, עולת ראיה, מודה אני So באמנתך ענני means, "Answer me because of Your faith in me". My problem is that I am so beaten and oppressed that I have no faith in myself. {:he} ><b>ג</b> כי רדף אויב נפשי דכא לארץ חיתי;<br/> הושבני במחשכים כמתי עולם׃<br/> <b>ד</b> ותתעטף עלי רוחי; בתוכי ישתומם לבי׃ --תהילים פרק קמג The expression במחשכים כמתי עולם was borrowed by Yirmiyahu in איכה to illustrate the depths of despair that the Jews felt at the time of the חורבן. {:he} >במחשכים הושיבני כמתי עולם׃ --איכה ג:ו And the fundamental problem is ותתעטף עלי רוחי, literally, "My spirit is folded over me"; I am so wrapped up in my problems that I can't even think about getting out. {:he} ><em>ותתעטף</em>: מחשבת הנפש והעטף קצתה על קצתה. --אבן עזרא, תהילים קמג:ד I can only escape by turning to You, seeing Your hand in history and praying to You: {:he} ><b>ה</b> זכרתי ימים מקדם הגיתי בכל פעלך;<br/> במעשה ידיך אשוחח׃<br/> <b>ו</b> פרשתי ידי אליך; נפשי כארץ עיפה לך סלה׃ --תהילים פרק קמג The second half of the perek is David's answer to his own prayer: how can I be saved? Let me learn more about You: השמיעני בבקר חסדך and הודיעני דרך זו אלך. {:he} ><b>ז</b> מהר ענני ה׳ כלתה רוחי;<br/> אל תסתר פניך ממני; ונמשלתי עם ירדי בור׃<br/> <b>ח</b> השמיעני בבקר חסדך כי בך בטחתי;<br/> הודיעני דרך זו אלך כי אליך נשאתי נפשי׃<br/> <b>ט</b> הצילני מאיבי ה׳ אליך כסתי׃<br/> <b>י</b> למדני לעשות רצונך כי אתה אלוקי;<br/> רוחך טובה; תנחני בארץ מישור׃ --תהילים פרק קמג And to sum up: my relationship to ה׳ is (תהלים קכג:ב)‎ כְעֵינֵי עֲבָדִים אֶל יַד אֲ‍דוֹנֵיהֶם. {:he} ><b>יא</b> למען שמך ה׳ תחיני; בצדקתך תוציא מצרה נפשי׃<br/> <b>יב</b> ובחסדך תצמית איבי; והאבדת כל צררי נפשי כי אני עבדך׃ --תהילים פרק קמג ---- We have three models of מזמור, all expressing the infinite distance between us and הקב״ה. But that distance is not a reason to despair, because ה׳ still talks to us. Next time I would like to look at how this יראה leads to אהבה, to the model of a מזמור שיר.
