{:style=color:red} 🚧🏗️ Page Still Under Construction There is supposedly an old Arab saying: >At the narrow passage there is no brother and no friend. --[Bedouin proverb](https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/c43a7e30-c551-012f-5655-58d385a7bc34) When things become critical, you can't count on anyone else. Everyone, when pushed to extremes, only cares about themselves. Before we get to that, Shlomo talks about wisdom and generosity: {:he .lines} >טו לב נבון יקנה דעת; ואזן חכמים תבקש דעת׃ טז מתן אדם ירחיב לו; ולפני גדלים ינחנו׃ יז צדיק הראשון בריבו; ובא רעהו וחקרו׃ --משלי פרק יח This emphasizes what we've said before: Listening leads to learning. And then he says מתן אדם ירחיב לו, which is literally about generosity. The midrash describes the matching grant as this kind of generosity: {:he} >רבי שמעון בן לקיש אזל לבצרה והוה תמן חד בר נש והוה שמיה אבא יודן רמאי. --ויקרא רבה ה:ד >מתן אדם, the gifts of other men, ירחיב לו, will widen his own contribution. --Artscroll Mishlei 18:16, footnote 1 We have such an example in Saint Louis. >The Staenberg Family Foundation’s highest funding priority is to support services, projects, and programs that help build thriving Jewish communities in St. Louis (MO), Denver (CO), and Omaha (NE), and beyond. We value an inclusive and pluralistic approach to Jewish life... > We favor grantees that will use our funding to create a ripple effect—that is, as incentives or matching dollars that inspire others to give. --[Staenberg Family Foundation](https://www.jfedstl.org/staenberg-family-foundation/) But metaphorically this is about wisdom and being generous in giving it out, because by teaching you learn. {:he} >... As we've often quoted: {:he} >הרבה למדתי מרבותי, ומחבירי יותר מרבותי, ומתלמידי יותר מכולן. --תענית ז,א And the שבט מיהודה connects this to the next pasuk. Taken literally, צדיק הראשון בריבו; ובא רעהו וחקרו is about realizing that you (especially when acting as a judge) don't know everything when listening to only one side. --מלבי״ם, משלי יח:יז The שבט מיהודה says this refers to all of us; we always think we are right until (and unless) we listen to those with whom we disagree. --שבט מיהודה, משלי יח:טז ---- And then Shlomo changes to dealing with disputes. {:he .lines} >יח מדינים ישבית הגורל; ובין עצומים יפריד׃ יט אח נפשע מקרית עז; ומדינים כבריח ארמון׃ --משלי פרק יח He's praising the גורל as a way to solve arguments--if you can't decide, random chance is a good way to make decisions. But we can't assume that everytime we flip a coin that ה׳ will send us a message by affecting the outcome. Nonetheless, flipping a coin is a good way to stop fights. Divination (literally, "asking G-d) is useful even if G-d isn't involved. >Divination is the practice of an occultic ritual as an aid in decision making...Divination can be practiced in many ways, including sortilege (casting of lots), reading tea leaves or animal entrails, random querying of texts, and more. Divination has been dismissed as superstition since antiquity; the Greek scholar Lucian derided divination already in the 2nd century CE. Yet the practice persists. > Developments in mathematics and in computer science in the 20th century shed new light on the power of divination. Unless we believe that divination truly allows us to consult the divine, we can view it simply as a form of randomization, which is recognized as a powerful construct in game theory and algorithm design. The classical game-theoretic example is the game of Rock-Scissors-Paper in which there is no Nash equilibrium of pure strategies, but there is a Nash equilibrium in which both players choose their actions uniformly at random. --Moshe Y. Vardi, [_Divination By Program Committee_](https://cacm.acm.org/opinion/divination-by-program-committee/) > It is the object of this paper to suggest a new interpretation of some aspects of divination...It seems safe to assume that human beings require a functional equivalent to a table of random numbers if they are to avoid unwitting regularities in their behavior which can be utilized by adversaries. --Omar Khayyam Moore (1957), [_Divination--A New Perspective_](https://doi.org/10.1525/aa.1957.59.1.02a00060) >Divination is found in most human societies, but there is little systematic research to explain (1) why it is persuasive or (2) why divination is required for important collective decisions in many small-scale societies. Common features of human communication and cooperation may help address both questions. A highly recurrent feature of divination is “ostensive detachment,” a demonstration that the diviners are not the authors of the statements they utter. As a consequence, people spontaneously interpret divination as less likely than other statements to be influenced by anyone’s intentions or interests. This is enough to give divination an epistemic advantage compared with other sources of information, answering question 1. This advantage is all the more important in situations where a diagnosis will create differential costs and benefits, for example, determining who is responsible for someone’s misfortune in a small-scale community. Divinatory statements provide a version of the situation that most participants are motivated to agree with, as it provides a focal point for efficient coordination at a minimal cost for almost all participants, which would answer question 2. --Abstract, Pascal Boyer, [_Why Divination?_](https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/706879) And so having a random number generator minimizes conflict, especially when there's no "good" answer (like Rock-Paper-Scissors). Or family disputes. And that gets us to the narrow passage where there is no brother. Family feuds last forever, across generations. Avoid them at all costs. ---- The other part of minimizing dispute is watch what you say. {:he .lines} >כ מפרי פי איש תשבע בטנו; תבואת שפתיו ישבע׃ כא מות וחיים ביד לשון; ואהביה יאכל פריה׃ --משלי פרק יח This entire book of משלי is about the power of speech; there's a famous metaphor in the midrash: {:he} >מעשה היה במלך פרס שנטה למות. --מדרש תהילים לט:ב ---- And then what seems to be an out-of-place pasuk: {:he} >מצא אשה מצא טוב; ויפק רצון מה׳׃ --משלי יח:כב Shlomo is clearly echoing ה׳'s comment in בראשית: {:he} >ויאמר ה׳ אלקים לא טוב היות האדם לבדו; אעשה לו עזר כנגדו׃ --בראשית ב:יח {:he} >מצא טוב: כי היא עוזרתו בעמלו. Shlomo has had his bad experiences, and says so in קהלת: {:he} >ומוצא אני מר ממות את האשה אשר היא מצודים וחרמים לבה אסורים ידיה; טוב לפני האלקים ימלט ממנה וחוטא ילכד בה׃ --קהלת ז:כו So Malbim says that מצא אשה מצא טוב should have a conjunction in it: {:he} >מצא אשה: המוצא אשה *ו*מצא טוב ויפק רצון, היינו שמצא אשה טובה מצדו, וגם יפיק רצון מצד האשה, שהיא רוצה בו, והוא משיג טוב ממנה, זאת היא מה', בהשגחת ה' וטובו. The gemara says similarly that there are two kinds of אשה to be found: {:he} > במערבא כי נסיב אינש אתתא, אמרי ליה הכי: ”מָצָא“ או ”מוֹצֵא“? That's not a very nice thing to ask a newlywed! We may be reading the gemara wrong. The question of “מָצָא” או “מוֹצֵא” is about the *groom*: {:he} >וכי כך ראוי לשאול אדם שזה עתה מתחתן מצא או מוצא? --פורטל הדף היומי, [הודעה](https://daf-yomi.com/forums/Message.aspx?id=66287) If you are looking for a spouse to fill your needs, מוצא אני--it's all about me--the relationship will fail. You have to look at the relationship as מצא אשה מצא טוב; the relationship is inherently good as long as I am looking out for the other's needs. In a broader sense, I think there are two metaphors here that are two models for how we deal with friends and colleagues, all the people with who we come in contact. One is the אח נפשע, the offended brother. Family, in this sense, are the ones we're stuck with. They will defend you and support you no matter what, until they won't. At the narrow passage there is no brother and no friend. The other model is the מצא אשה מצא טוב, the עזר כנגדו. A relationship involves criticism and arguments when necessary.
