<blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> דבר אל כל עדת בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם קדשים תהיו; כי קדוש אני ה׳ אלקיכם׃ </p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק יט</footer></blockquote> <p>It's an odd formulation: כל עדת בני ישראל. Not בני ישראל or כל ישראל. What does it mean?</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>מלמד שנאמרה פרשה זו בהקהל, מפני שרוב גופי תורה תלויין בה.</p> <footer class=source> רש״י, ויקרא יט:ב, ד״ה דבר אל כל עדת בני ישראל</footer></blockquote> <p>But the pasuk does not say קהל; it says עדה. What is an עדה?</p> <p>The hint is how the word is used elsewhere in the Torah. The term עדה is how we learn what constitutes a quorum in Jewish law, a מנין:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p> ר' בא ור' יסא בשם ר' יוחנן נאמר כאן עדה [דבר אל כל עדת בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם קדשים תהיו] ונאמר להלן (במדבר יד) עד מתי לעדה הרעה הזאת מה עדה האמורה להלן עשרה אף כאן עשרה</p> <footer class=source>ירושלמי מגילה ד:ד</footer></blockquote> <p>It's very odd: we learn how to serve ה׳ from the evil spies. The way this is usually understood is that the spies influenced the entire community; עדה is from the root עד; witness or testimony. An עדה is a group capable of creating a like-minded community. As Rabbi Sacks puts it:</p> <blockquote lang=en><p>Edah comes from the word ed, meaning “witness.” The verb ya’ad carries the meaning of “to appoint, fix, assign, destine, set apart, designate or determine.” The modern Hebrew noun te’udah means “certificate, document, attestation, aim, object, purpose or mission.” The people who constitute an edah have a strong sense of collective identity. They have witnessed the same things. They are bent on the same purpose. The Jewish people become an edah--a community of shared faith--only on receiving the first command:</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.rabbisacks.org/covenant-conversation-vayakhel-pekudei-two-types-of-community/">Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, <cite>Vayakhel-Pekudei (5773)--Three Types of Community</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ואל אהרן בארץ מצרים לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> החדש הזה לכם ראש חדשים: ראשון הוא לכם לחדשי השנה׃ <b>ג</b> דברו אל <em>כל עדת ישראל</em> לאמר בעשר לחדש הזה ויקחו להם איש שה לבית אבת שה לבית׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יב</footer></blockquote> <p>Similarly:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>מג</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ואהרן זאת חקת הפסח: כל בן נכר לא יאכל בו׃ ... <b>מז</b> כל עדת ישראל יעשו אתו׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יב</footer></blockquote> <p>The prototype of how an עדה of only ten affects an entire community is from Abraham:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> ויאמר ה׳ זעקת סדם ועמרה כי רבה; וחטאתם כי כבדה מאד׃ <b>כא</b> ארדה נא ואראה הכצעקתה הבאה אלי עשו כלה; ואם לא אדעה׃ <b>כב</b> ויפנו משם האנשים וילכו סדמה; ואברהם עודנו עמד לפני ה׳׃ <b>כג</b> ויגש אברהם ויאמר: האף תספה צדיק עם רשע׃ <b>כד</b> אולי יש חמשים צדיקם בתוך העיר; האף תספה ולא תשא למקום למען חמשים הצדיקם אשר בקרבה׃ <b>כה</b> חללה לך מעשת כדבר הזה להמית צדיק עם רשע והיה כצדיק כרשע; חללה לך השפט כל הארץ לא יעשה משפט׃ ... <b>לב</b> ויאמר אל נא יחר לאדני ואדברה אך הפעם אולי ימצאון שם עשרה; ויאמר לא אשחית בעבור העשרה׃ <b>לג</b> וילך ה׳ כאשר כלה לדבר אל אברהם; ואברהם שב למקמו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק יח</footer></blockquote> <p>But our parasha requires us to go further; we cannot rely on the minimal עדה. We must be כל עדת בני ישראל; all of us must be the core that defines us as a whole.</p> <p>These גופי תורה define our "community of shared faith"; if you look carefully at the parasha, you can see the ten commandments embedded in the mitzvot listed. But there is one commandment that seems out of place:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> וכי תזבחו זבח שלמים לה׳ לרצנכם תזבחהו׃ <b>ו</b> ביום זבחכם יאכל וממחרת; והנותר עד יום השלישי באש ישרף׃ <b>ז</b> ואם האכל יאכל ביום השלישי פגול הוא לא ירצה׃ <b>ח</b> ואכליו עונו ישא כי את קדש ה׳ חלל; ונכרתה הנפש ההוא מעמיה׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק יט</footer></blockquote> <p>In the פשט,‎ פיגול is the sin of eating a קרבן שלמים after the 2-day deadline. In the actual הלכה, the specific sin being listed here is having the wrong intention: <em>planning</em> to eat it after the deadline.</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>כשתזבחוהו, תשחטוהו על מנת לאכלו בזמן שקבעתי לכם כבר</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, ויקרא יט:ו, ד״ה ביום זבחכם יאכל</footer></blockquote> <p>The logic is that we should not invalidate a sacrifice that was done correctly (לא ירצה) because of something that may happen three days later, possibly by someone else entirely. The problem that invalidates the sacrifice must be something wrong in the sacrifice itself. </p> <p>It's a real law, but how does it it fit, of all the laws of קרבנות, into these גופי תורה?</p> <p>שד"ל proposes an answer that ties the whole perek together:</p> <blockquote lang=en><p>Shadal (Sh'mu'el David Luzzato, 19th century Italian commentator) suggests that the reasoning behind the law of pigul is akin to the gleanings. If the Torah had allowed a goodwill offering (Korban Sh'lamim) to be eaten over an indefinite time period, the individual would likely eat some, with his family and close friends, during the first few days after bringing it. He would then store it away and continue to "celebrate" with his entourage. Keep in mind that a Sh'lamim is brought from the flock or the herd--a large animal which cannot be devoured quickly. Since the Torah commands that a Sh'lamim must be eaten on the day that it is offered and the morrow--no later than the end of that second night, the one bringing the offering will perforce share it with many others. The assumption is that not only will this offering have a portion for God (burnt on the altar), a portion for the Kohanim (see Vayyikra 7:34) and a portion for the Yisra'el who brought it (see Rashi on Vayyikra 3:1) - it will also include the poor, since the one who brought it will have to share it around to make sure it is devoured on time.</p> <p>This understanding of Pigul underscores another dimension of the balance and synthesis which is the desired type of Kedushah. Not only must both the "secular" and "holy" parts of our lives be informed by a desire to holiness--but those considerations must inform each other. Not only do we have to act compassionately and generously with the poor in our midst--we have to make that consideration a part and parcel of our Mikdash-experience.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.torah.org/advanced/mikra/5767/kedoshim.html">Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom, <cite>Speak to the Entire Congregation</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <p>The laws of פיגול now become the linchpin tying the two halves of the עשרת הדברות together; ritual and communal are inseparable and are what makes us קדושים.</p>
