This is a re-presentation of <//פרשת עקב תש״פ>, since I didn't have time to work on anything this week. This week's parasha deals mostly with the מצוה of אהבת ה׳, but does have a little historical background: {:he} ><b>ב</b> וזכרת את כל הדרך אשר הוליכך ה׳ אלקיך זה ארבעים שנה במדבר; למען ענתך לנסתך לדעת את אשר בלבבך התשמר מצותו אם לא׃ <b>ג</b> ויענך וירעבך ויאכלך את המן אשר לא ידעת ולא ידעון אבתיך; למען הודיעך כי לא על הלחם לבדו יחיה האדם כי על כל מוצא פי ה׳ יחיה האדם׃ <b>ד</b> שמלתך לא בלתה מעליך ורגלך לא בצקה זה ארבעים שנה׃ <b>ה</b> וידעת עם לבבך; כי כאשר ייסר איש את בנו ה׳ אלקיך מיסרך׃ --דברים פרק ח And in case you missed the point, Moshe repeats it: {:he} >הַמַּאֲכִלְךָ מָן במדבר אשר לא ידעון אבתיך; למען ענתך ולמען נסתך להיטבך באחריתך׃ --דברים ח:טז ה׳ intentionally caused us pain, ענתך, for our ultimate good, להיטבך באחריתך. Is that right? >Pain is weakness leaving the body. --[Chesty Puller](https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/chesty_puller_700767) What kind of father tortures his children just to make them tougher? Well, I might. But is that something for an all-knowing, all-powerful and all-good G-d? ---- The single classical problem in Jewish thought is theodicy, the problem of צדיק ורע לו. While I haven't seen anyone put it this plainly, it seems to me there are five traditional approaches to the question. There are no answers; only ways to look at suffering and continue on with life. <b>1</b> The "meta-approach", as it were, to the question of suffering is not to attempt to address it. {:he} >רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר אוֹמֵר, אַל תְּרַצֶּה אֶת חֲבֵרְךָ בִּשְׁעַת כַּעֲסוֹ, וְאַל תְנַחֲמֶנּוּ בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁמֵּתוֹ מֻטָּל לְפָנָיו. --משנה אבות ד:יח Just being there with someone in pain makes a difference. <b>2</b> There is the idea that G-d is just and that suffering is G-d's response, מידה כנגד מידה, to something we did wrong. (שבת נה,א)‎ אמר רב אמי: אין מיתה בלא חטא ואין יסורין בלא עון. Our response to suffering should be introspection and תשובה. This is the general approach of ספר משלי:‎ (משלי ב:כא-כב)‎ כִּי יְשָׁרִים יִשְׁכְּנוּ אָרֶץ; וּתְמִימִים יִוָּתְרוּ בָהּ׃ וּרְשָׁעִים מֵאֶרֶץ יִכָּרֵתוּ; וּבוֹגְדִים יִסְּחוּ מִמֶּנָּה׃. <b>3</b> There is the idea that G-d is infinitely good, but that our perspective is too small to be able to understand that. We are part of a larger plan that encompasses all of time and space. We cannot question. This is the general approach of ספר איוב:‎ (איוב מא:ג)‎ מִי הִקְדִּימַנִי וַאֲשַׁלֵּם; תַּחַת כָּל הַשָּׁמַיִם לִי הוּא׃. <b>4</b> There is the idea of גם זו לטובה, that things will work out in the end (for us, not just for the universe as a whole). Our suffering is a side effect of a process that we will see works to our benefit. This is the general approach of ספר תהילים:‎ (תהילים כב:כה)‎ כִּי לֹא בָזָה וְלֹא שִׁקַּץ עֱנוּת עָנִי וְלֹא הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו מִמֶּנּוּ; וּבְשַׁוְּעוֹ אֵלָיו שָׁמֵעַ. <b>5</b> But our pasuk doesn't say any of that. למען ענתך ולמען נסתך להיטבך באחריתך implies that it is the עַנּוֹת, the affliction itself, that is ultimately good. And it is somehow connected to למען נסתך, to the idea of a Divine "test". I think that this is the approach that the Torah itself presents most often, the idea of יסורין של אהבה. {:he} >אמר רבא ואיתימא רב חסדא: אם רואה אדם שיסורין באין עליו יפשפש במעשיו...ואם תלה ולא מצא בידוע שיסורין של אהבה. --ברכות ה,א Why should our suffering be a sign of ה׳'s love? Our pasuk gives us a hint: למען ענתך לנסתך לדעת את אשר בלבבך. What is a ניסיון? One of Liora's teachers in seminary, Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein, wrote a [book on Aggagah](https://feldheim.com/aggadah-sages-stories-secrets) that addresses this. {:he} >ה׳ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן; וְרָשָׁע וְאֹהֵב חָמָס שָׂנְאָה נַפְשׁוֹ׃ --תהלים יא:ה {:he} >אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹנָתָן: הַפִּשְׁתָּנִי הַזֶּה, כְּשֶׁפִּשְׁתָּנוֹ לוֹקֶה אֵינוֹ מַקִּישׁ עָלָיו בְּיוֹתֵר מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהִיא פּוֹקַעַת, וּכְשֶׁפִּשְׁתָּנוֹ יָפֶה הוּא מַקִּישׁ עָלָיו בְּיוֹתֵר. לָמָּה? שֶׁהִיא מִשְׁתַּבַּחַת וְהוֹלֶכֶת. כָּךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֵינוֹ מְנַסֶּה אֶת הָרְשָׁעִים, לָמָּה שֶׁאֵין יְכוֹלִין לַעֲמֹד...וְאֶת מִי מְנַסֶּה? אֶת הַצַּדִּיקִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ה׳ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן. > אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹנָתָן: הַיּוֹצֵר הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁהוּא בּוֹדֵק אֶת הַכִּבְשָׁן שֶׁלּוֹ אֵינוֹ בּוֹדֵק אֶת הַכֵּלִים הַמְרֹעָעִים. לָמָּה? שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַסְפִּיק לְהָקִישׁ עָלָיו אַחַת עַד שֶׁהוּא שׁוֹבְרוֹ. וּמַה הוּא בּוֹדֵק? בְּקַנְקַנִים בְּרוּרִים, שֶׁאֲפִלּוּ הוּא מַקִּישׁ עָלָיו כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים אֵינוֹ שׁוֹבְרוֹ. כָּךְ אֵין הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְנַסֶּה אֶת הָרְשָׁעִים אֶלָּא אֶת הַצַּדִּיקִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ה׳ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן. > אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר: לְבַעַל הַבַּיִת שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ שְׁתֵּי פָּרוֹת אַחַת כֹּחָהּ יָפֶה וְאַחַת כֹּחָהּ רָע, עַל מִי הוּא נוֹתֵן אֶת הָעֹל? לֹא עַל אוֹתָהּ שֶׁכֹּחָהּ יָפֶה?! כָּךְ אֵין הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְנַסֶּה אֶלָּא הַצַּדִּיקִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ה׳ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן. --בראשית רבה נה:ב >There are a lot of /meshalim/ here! What is each sage adding by providing a further example to illustrate the idea, when a single example alone would suffice? --Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein, [_Aggadah: Sages, Stories & Secrets_](https://feldheim.com/aggadah-sages-stories-secrets), p. 45 He says that the midrash here is illustrating three approaches to נסיון: {:he} >ענין הנסיון הוא לדעתי בעבור היות מעשה האדם רשות מוחלטת בידו אם ירצה יעשה ואם לא ירצה לא יעשה, יקרא ”נסיון“ מצד המנוסה. אבל המנסה יתברך יצוה בו להוציא הדבר מן הכח אל הפועל להיות לו שכר מעשה טוב…דע כי (תהלים יא:ה) ה׳ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן, כשהוא יודע בצדיק שיעשה רצונו וחפץ להצדיקו יצוה אותו בנסיון…והנה כל הנסיונות שבתורה לטובת המנוסה. --רמב״ן, בראשית כב:א {:he} >ענין הנסיון גם כן מסופק מאוד והוא הגדול שבמסופקי התורה...דע כי כל נסיון שבא בתורה אין כונתו וענינו אלא שידעו בני אדם מה שצריך להם לעשותו ומה שראוי להאמינו. וכאילו ענין הנסיון...הכונה שיהיה משל שילמדו ממנו וילכו אחריו. --מורה נבוכים, ג:כד {:he} >עוד יש בחינה...והוא שינסה הוא ית' את הצדיק בהביא עליו יסורין לנסותו שיקבלם באהבה בעד הדור ושיעור הענין כי הבחינה...תועלת הדור שיסבול ייסורין לכפר ולהגין עליהם כי חליים הוא נושא ומכאובם הוא סיבלם. --אלשיך, בראשית כב:א >A. The Ramban explains that the purpose of a test is to allow the person to express in reality what they are capable of potentially... > >B. The Rambam explains the idea of Hashem putting someone through a /nisayon/...in order for others to see what the /tzaddik/ is capable of and be inspired to emulate his ways. In this respect, the word נסיון is related to the word נס, a banner... > >C. A third explanation is that Hashem subjects the /tzaddik/ to unusually trying conditions in order to provide added merit for his generation... --Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein, [_Aggadah: Sages, Stories & Secrets_](https://feldheim.com/aggadah-sages-stories-secrets), p. 46 The Netziv says something similar: {:he} >וענין שלשה משלים. ללמדנו שנסיון בא בשלש בחינות. פעם בא כמשל קדירה שלא בא הנקישה על הקדירה הטובה כדי שיושבח בזה. אלא כדי לדעת כמה חוזק הקדירה. > ופעם בא כמשל הפשתן דלא בא הניקוש כדי לדעת אלא כדי להשביחו. > ופעם בא כמשל החמור שלא בא כדי לדעת או כדי להשביח אלא באשר יש לבעליו רוב משא ומנסה את חמורו אולי ישא יותר וטוב לו. וכל מה שמוסיף החמור לישא מוסיף בעליו אח״כ במזונו. > כך פעם בא נסיון לדעת כח צדקת האדם. וזה נקרא בחינה. פעם בא כדי שיוסיף להצטדק. דאע״ג שבכח האדם מונח זו הפעולה מ״מ כל עוד לא בא מעשה לידו ולא הוציא מכח אל הפועל לא נשרש זה הכח אצלו ע״כ מביאו הקב״ה לידי נסיון. והוא מתחזק ומוציא מכח אל הפועל ומשריש זה הכח בקרבו. ופעם בא הנסיון לעון הדור. ומטילים על הצדיק משא יסורים ואח״כ מקבל שכרו משלם. --נצי״ב, העמק דבר, בראשית כב:א ה׳ is not looking to make us suffer. ה׳ is looking for our response to that suffering. ה׳ is omniscient and knows what we are capable of. *We* don't. A נסיון tells us and those around us what our potential is, and allows us to grow toward that potential. {:he} >זית רענן יפה פרי תאר קרא ה׳ שמך; לקול המולה גדלה הצית אש עליה ורעו דליותיו׃ --ירמיהו יא:טז {:he} >אמר רבי יוחנן: למה נמשלו ישראל לזית? לומר לך, מה זית לא מוציא שמנו אלא על ידי כתיתה, אף ישראל אין חוזרין למוטב אלא ע"י יסורין. --מנחות נג,ב And perhaps seeing יסורים--especially the minor annoyances of everyday life--in this light will help make us better people. >Contemplating these /aggados/, a clear message emerges. When we consider the idea of /nisayon/, we tend to think of epic do-or-die situations, and in doing so we overlook the many things which are tests specifically *because* they are everyday situations. Yet...it is actually those situations which may be the real test of our moral worth. With no "occasion" to speak of, there is just us and the right thing to do. > When we consider that it is our tests which bring out the best in us and allow for our spiritual and moral growth, it is all the more crucial to realize that we actually encounter them on an ongoing basis. In a way, every moral decision...is a test in our day-to-day lives. Often we forgo these opportunities for spiritual development while we are dreaming about how we would fare in a real "test".
