There's an interesting pattern in this week's parsha. When the text tells us that Yaakov sends his sons to Egypt, Rashi sees a sort of pun: {:he} ><b>א</b> וירא יעקב כי יש שבר במצרים; ויאמר יעקב לבניו למה תתראו׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר הנה שמעתי כי יש שבר במצרים; רדו שמה ושברו לנו משם ונחיה ולא נמות׃ --בראשית פרק מב {:he} ><em>וירא יעקב כי יש שֶׁבֶר במצרים</em>: ומהיכן ראה? והלא לא ראה אלא שמע, שנאמר הנה שמעתי וגו' ומהו וירא? ראה באספקלריא של קדש שעדין יש לו שֶׂבֶר במצרים; ולא היתה נבואה ממש להודיעו בפרוש שזה יוסף. --רש״י, בראשית מב:א שֶׁבֶר means "merchandise"; שֶׂבֶר means "hope". {:he} >עיני כל אליך יְשַׂבֵּרוּ; ואתה נותן להם את אכלם בעתו׃ --תהילים קמה:טו But what is striking about this reading is that it is addressed to *us*, the readers, not Yaakov himself. >This is an instance of a prophet not comprehending the clear meaning of his revelation, for it is plain from the narrative that Jacob did not know the consequences of his initiative in sending his sons to Egypt. Another example is his unconscious prophecy that his family would ultimately spend 210 years in Egypt (see v. 2). --Artscroll Chumash, Bereishis 42:1 {:he} >רְדוּ שָׁמָּה [וְשִׁבְרוּ לָנוּ מִשָּׁם]: רמז למאתים ועשר שנים שנשתעבדו למצרים כמנין רד"ו. --רש"י,בראשית מב:ב We something similar when the brothers confront the viceroy of Egypt, not knowing that he is Yosef. {:he} > <b>ט</b> ויזכר יוסף את החלמות אשר חלם להם; ויאמר אלהם מרגלים אתם לראות את ערות הארץ באתם׃ <b>י</b> ויאמרו אליו לא אדני; ועבדיך באו לשבר אכל׃ <b>יא</b> כלנו בני איש אחד נחנו; כנים אנחנו לא היו עבדיך מרגלים׃ --בראשית פרק מב {:he} ><em>כלנו בני איש אחד נחנו</em>: נצנצה בהם רוח הקדש וכללוהו עמהם, שאף הוא בן אביהם. --רש״י, בראשית מב:יא And when Yaakov allows Binyamin to go down to Egypt: {:he} ><b>יג</b> ואת אחיכם קחו; וקומו שובו אל האיש׃ <b>יד</b> וא־ל ש־די יתן לכם רחמים לפני האיש ושלח לכם את אחיכם אחר ואת בנימין; ואני כאשר שכלתי שכלתי׃ --בראשית פרק מג {:he} ><em>אחר</em>: רוח הקדש נזרקה בו, לרבות יוסף. --רש״י, בראשית מג:יד I don't know the distinction that Rashi is making between אספקלריא של קדש,‎ נצנצה בהם רוח הקדש and רוח הקדש נזרקה בו, but if we were reading the Torah as a purely literary text, we would call this dramatic irony: <blockquote> <dl><dt>Dramatic Irony</dt><dd>Irony that is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play.</dd></dl> <footer class=source>dictionary.com, <a href=https://www.dictionary.com/browse/dramatic-irony><cite>dramatic irony</cite></a></footer> </blockquote> Dramatic irony is the author's way of winking at us, telling the reader that there's someone "behind the scenes" making the plot flow. As a religious text, the Torah is telling us something similar. There's one more episode of dramatic irony in this parsha: {:he} >ויאמר יהודה אל ישראל אביו שלחה הנער אתי ונקומה ונלכה; ונחיה ולא נמות גם אנחנו גם אתה גם טפנו׃ --בראשית מג:ח {:he} ><em>ונחיה</em>. נצנצה בו רוח הקדש, על ידי הליכה זו תחי רוחך, שנאמר (בראשית מה:כז) ותחי רוח יעקב אביהם. > <em>ולא נמות</em>: ברעב. --רש״י, בראשית מג:ח It's not noticeable until we think about it, but ה׳ has been absent for the past 2 parshiot. The last time ה׳ spoke to anyone was in וישלח: {:he} ><b>ט</b> וירא אלקים אל יעקב עוד בבאו מפדן ארם; ויברך אתו׃ <b>י</b> ויאמר לו אלקים שמך יעקב; לא יקרא שמך עוד יעקב כי אם ישראל יהיה שמך ויקרא את שמו ישראל׃ --בראשית פרק לה And we don't see a נבואה until next week's parsha: {:he} > <b>כה</b> ויעלו ממצרים; ויבאו ארץ כנען אל יעקב אביהם׃ <b>כו</b> ויגדו לו לאמר עוד יוסף חי וכי הוא משל בכל ארץ מצרים; ויפג לבו כי לא האמין להם׃ <b>כז</b> וידברו אליו את כל דברי יוסף אשר דבר אלהם וירא את העגלות אשר שלח יוסף לשאת אתו; ותחי רוח יעקב אביהם׃ --בראשית פרק מה {:he} ><em>ותחי רוח יעקב</em>: שרתה עליו שכינה, שפרשה ממנו. --רש"י, בראשית מה:כז And then: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויסע ישראל וכל אשר לו ויבא בארה שבע; ויזבח זבחים לאלקי אביו יצחק׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר אלקים לישראל במראת הלילה ויאמר יעקב יעקב; ויאמר הנני׃ --בראשית פרק מו ---- What happened, obviously, was the sale of Yosef. Yaakov has been mourning his son for 22 years, and, while in mourning, cannot be a נביא. {:he} >(קהלת ח:טו) וְשִׁבַּחְתִּי אֲנִי אֶת הַשִּׂמְחָה: שמחה של מצוה...ללמדך שאין שכינה שורה לא מתוך עצבות...אלא מתוך דבר שמחה של מצוה, שנאמר (מלכים ב ג:טו): וְעַתָּה קְחוּ לִי מְנַגֵּן וְהָיָה כְּנַגֵּן הַמְנַגֵּן וַתְּהִי עָלָיו יַד ה׳. אמר רב יהודה: וכן לדבר הלכה. --שבת ל,ב {:.lines} >Do you remember the good years in Canaan? The summers were endlessly gold... > Now the fields are dead and bare No joie de vivre anywhere Et maintenant, we drink a bitter wine > Those Canaan days We used to know Where have they gone? Where did they go? People still talk *about* G-d: (בראשית מא:טז)‎ אלקים יענה את שלום פרעה, and we saw Yaakov speak *to* G-d: וא־ל ש־די יתן לכם רחמים. But G-d doesn't talk to Yaakov. Nonetheless, the text reminds us, He does. He just can't hear it in the face of our עצבות. ---- We don't have נבואה today. {:he} > מיום שחרב בית המדרש אין שמחה שלימה בעולם. --מדרש לקח טוב, איכה ה:יד But the Torah is telling us that even so, ה׳'s voice is with us today as long as we are speak with ה׳. >Prayer is basically an awareness of man finding himself in the presence of and addressing himself to his Maker, and to pray has one connotation only: to stand before G-d...Indeed, the prayer community was born the very instant the prophetic community expired and...it did not supersede the prophetic community but rather perpetuated it.
