This shiur is largely from Zohar Atkin's [_Pagan Gods Are Quick, Easy, and Disposable_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/pagan-gods-are-quick-easy-and-disposable). As part of Moshe's final speech, introducing the תוחכה, he says: {:he} ><b>טז</b> היום הזה ה׳ אלקיך מצוך לעשות את החקים האלה ואת המשפטים; ושמרת ועשית אותם בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך׃ <b>יז</b> את ה׳ האמרת היום; להיות לך לאלקים וללכת בדרכיו ולשמר חקיו ומצותיו ומשפטיו ולשמע בקלו׃ <b>יח</b> וה׳ האמירך היום להיות לו לעם סגלה כאשר דבר לך; ולשמר כל מצותיו׃ <b>יט</b> ולתתך עליון על כל הגוים אשר עשה לתהלה ולשם ולתפארת; ולהיתך עם קדש לה׳ אלקיך כאשר דבר׃ --דברים פרק כו Rashi makes the point that היום הזה doens't mean literally "today"; it means "every day": {:he} ><em>היום הזה ה' אלקיך מצוך</em>: בכל יום יהיו בעיניך חדשים כאלו בו ביום נצטוית עליהם. --רש״י, דברים כו:טז But I want to focus on the expression את ה׳ האמרת היום. What does הֶאֱמַר mean? {:he} ><em>האמרת…האמירך</em>: אין להם עד מוכיח במקרא, ולי נראה שהוא לשון הפרשה והבדלה—הבדלת לך מאלהי הנכר להיות לך לאלקים והוא הפרישך אליו מעמי הארץ להיות לו לעם סגלה. > [ומצאתי להם עד והוא לשון תפארת כמו (תהלים צד:ד) [יַבִּיעוּ יְדַבְּרוּ עָתָק] יִתְאַמְּרוּ כׇּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן.] --רש״י, דברים כו:יז Rashi is apparently contradicting himself; first he says there is no עד, no other example, for האמר, so he speculates that it means a pledge of exclusivity. Then he says there is an עד, and it means "glorify", which isn't exactly the same thing. The answer seems to be that the manuscripts of Rashi's commentary and some of the original printed versions don't include the bracketed text (which is why Artscroll, for instance, brackets it). It seems that Rashi himself didn't know of any other use of האמר, but that the editor found another soure in ספר תהילים. But that's a weird thing to say. Didn't Rashi know about that pasuk? It's the שיר של יום for Wednesday! And Rashi himself translates האמרת with reference to that pasuk when it is discussed in the gemara: {:he} ><em>האמרת</em>: שבחת, כמו יִתְאַמְּרוּ כׇּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן; ישתבחו שדרכן צלחה. --רש״י, חגיגה ג,א So I would assume that Rashi knew full well about יִתְאַמְּרוּ כׇּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן but didn't want to translate our psukim that way in his Chumash commentary. He wanted to make another point. ---- Ramban connects הֶאֱמַר to a similar word earlier in the ספר: {:he} >והיה אם לא חפצת בה ושלחתה לנפשה ומכר לא תמכרנה בכסף; לא *תתעמר* בה תחת אשר עניתה׃ --דברים כא:יד {:he} ><em>לא תתעמר בה</em>: לא תשתמש בה. בלשון פרסי קורין לעבדות ושמוש "עִימְרָאָה", מיסודו של ר' משה הדרשן למדתי כן. --רש״י, שם {:he} ><em>לא תתעמר בה</em>: כמו (דברים כד:ז) וְהִתְעַמֶּר בּוֹ וּמְכָרוֹ...והנראה בעיני לפי פשוטו כי לֹא־תִתְעַמֵּר הוא כמו ”לא תתאמר“ מלשון יִתְאַמְּרוּ כׇּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן, וכן אֶת ה׳ הֶאֱמַרְתָּ הַיּוֹם, וכן (ישעיהו סא:ו) וּבִכְבוֹדָם תִּתְיַמָּרוּ...וכולם נגזרו מן (ישעיהו יז:ו) בְּרֹאשׁ אָמִיר. --רמב״ן, שם If it is a loan word, then it is not surprising that the spelling would vary. I suspect that it is the same as the English "emir", from the Arabic for "commander". Spelling varies for loan words (as crossword solvers know--"emir" can be "emeer", "amir" or other variants!). So האמרת means "you have made Him commander". And that meaning is apparently consistent with the context: ה׳ has power over others: לשמע בקלו, and Israel has power over others: לתתך עליון על כל הגוים. ---- Rashi's reading of האמרת as לשון הפרשה והבדלה, which Artscroll translates as "distinguish", comes from the gemara: {:he} >אמר רבי יצחק: מנין שהקדוש ברוך הוא מניח תפילין? שנאמר (ישעיהו סב:ח): נִשְׁבַּע ה׳ בִּימִינוֹ וּבִזְרוֹעַ עֻזּוֹ...אמר ליה רב נחמן בר יצחק לרב חייא בר אבין: הני תפילין דמרי עלמא מה כתיב בהו? אמר ליה (שמואל ב ז:כג) וּמִי כְעַמְּךָ כְּיִשְׂרָאֵל גּוֹי אֶחָד בָּאָרֶץ. ומי משתבח קודשא בריך הוא בשבחייהו דישראל? אין, דכתיב: אֶת ה׳ הֶאֱמַרְתָּ הַיּוֹם. וכתיב: וַה׳ הֶאֱמִירְךָ הַיּוֹם. אמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא לישראל: אתם עשיתוני חטיבה אחת בעולם, ואני אעשה אתכם חטיבה אחת בעולם.אתם עשיתוני חטיבה אחת בעולם, שנאמר (דברים ו:ד): שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל ה׳ אֱלֹקֵינוּ ה׳ אֶחָד, ואני אעשה אתכם חטיבה אחת בעולם, שנאמר וּמִי כְעַמְּךָ כְּיִשְׂרָאֵל גּוֹי אֶחָד בָּאָרֶץ. --ברכות ו,א >חֲטִיבָה: object of love. Ber. 6ᵃ; Ḥag. 3ᵃ (ref. to Deut. XXVI, 17) אתם עשיתוני ח׳ אחת וכ׳ you made me the only object of your love in the world, and I shall make you &c. --Jastrow Dictionary, חֲטִיבָה The message of האמר is not of power but of exclusivity. >Israel distinguished Hashem as its only God, and He distinguished Israel as His only people. --Artscroll Chumash, commentary to Devarim 26:17-18 This paragraph is the equivalent of קידושין. We are pledged to each other. And that is what תפילין is a symbol of: {:he} ><em>[והיה לך] לאות על ידך [ולזכרון בין עיניך]</em>: לפי עומק פשוטו: יהיה לך לזכרון תמיד, כאלו כתוב על ידך. כעין (שיר השירים ח:ו) שִׂימֵנִי כַחוֹתָם עַל לִבֶּךָ [כַּחוֹתָם עַל זְרוֹעֶךָ]. --רשב"ם, שמות יג:ט And that commitment is mutual. Atkins says that is what monotheism really means: >It’s easy to think that the sin of idolatry is simply the worship of numerically multiple gods. Likewise, it’s easy to think that the ethos of monotheism is simply the worship of only one G-d. But the crux of the difference between monotheism and paganism is not to be found in the numerical difference between 1 and n+1. Rather, the difference is qualitative. It has to do with why one would turn to only one vs. many gods in the first place. > A person who turns from god to god is using each god to achieve some end. If you can’t get your feed from Aphrodite, maybe Athena can help. If you don’t like Zeus’s opinion, get a second one from Hera. Easy come easy go. Greek Tragedy reflects a pantheon replete with enough diversity that you can pick your favorite god when convenient and abandon that god when convenient. In contemporary speak, paganism is the theological equivalent of “hook-up” culture. Now, perhaps it takes some trial and error to find the god you can commit to, and pagans eventually grow up and settle down into one god—the god of their place or country or ancestors. But this is not guaranteed and it’s not a requirement. It’s a choice. Paganism is tolerant, for better and for worse... > The point of monotheism is that one’s relationship with G-d is not disposable nor is it interchangeable. It is also not instrumental or transactional. Although G-d offers protection and blessing, the protection and blessing come as part of the package of long-term commitment. They come from life-long and generations-long investment, not one-night epiphanies or weekend retreats.
