This week's parasha ends the list of laws with a coda about how special בני ישראל are: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טז</b> היום הזה ה׳ אלקיך מצוך לעשות את החקים האלה ואת המשפטים; ושמרת ועשית אותם בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך׃ <b>יז</b> את ה׳ הֶאֱמַרְתָּ היום; להיות לך לאלקים וללכת בדרכיו ולשמר חקיו ומצותיו ומשפטיו ולשמע בקלו׃ <b>יח</b> וה׳ הֶאֱמִירְךָ היום להיות לו לעם סגלה כאשר דבר לך; ולשמר כל מצותיו׃ <b>יט</b> ולתתך עליון על כל הגוים אשר עשה לתהלה ולשם ולתפארת; ולהיתך עם קדש לה׳ אלקיך כאשר דבר׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק כו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>הנה השלים משה לבאר את התורה ולחדש כל המצות אשר צוה אותו השם לחדש להם, ולכך אמר היום הזה ה׳ אלקיך מצוך לעשות את החקים האלה ואת המשפטים, כי כבר השלמתי לך הכל. </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, דברים כו:טז </footer></blockquote> <hr/> What does it mean, את ה׳ הֶאֱמַרְתָּ? The verb האמר is almost unique: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>האמרת</em> ו<em>האמירך</em> (פסוק יח): אין להם עד מוכיח במקרא. ולי נראה שהוא לשון הפרשה והבדלה; הבדלתי לך מאלהי הנכר להיות לך לאלקים, והוא הפרישך אליו מעמי הארץ להיות לו לעם סגולה [ומצאתי להם עד והוא לשון תפארת כמו יתאמרו כל פועלי און (תהלים צד:ד) ]</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים כו:יז</footer></blockquote> Rashi's other source is the שיר של יום for Wednesday: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> עַד מָתַי רְשָׁעִים ה׳; עַד מָתַי רְשָׁעִים יַעֲלֹזוּ׃ <b>ד</b> יַבִּיעוּ יְדַבְּרוּ עָתָק; יִתְאַמְּרוּ כָּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק צד</footer></blockquote> So Rashi's translation of "distiguish" seems to fit, with the reflexive יִתְאַמְּרוּ meaning "they think themselves distinguished". Ramban proposes some other uses of this root in תנ״ך, especially if we allow for consonant changes like א to ע: <blockquote lang=he><p>והנראה בעיני לפי פשוטו, כי לא תתעמר הוא כמו לא תתאמר, מלשון יתאמרו כל פועלי און (תהלים צד:ד), וכן את ה׳ האמרת היום (להלן כו:יז), וכן ובכבודם תתימרו (ישעיה סא:ו), בחלוף האל״ף ביו״ד. וכלם רוממות וגדולה, האמרת היום, רוממת וגדלת אותו להיות לך לאלקים, האמירך היום (להלן כו:יח), רומם וגדל אותך על כל העמים להיות לו לעם סגולה, וכולם נגזרו מן בראש אמיר (ישעיה יז:ו), יאמר לא תתרומם ותתגדל בה להיות אתה אדוניה למוכרה ולהשתמש בה כשפחה, <em>וכן יקראו בערבי האדון, אמיר</em>.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, דברים כא:יד </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וְנִשְׁאַר בּוֹ עוֹלֵלֹת כְּנֹקֶף זַיִת שְׁנַיִם שְׁלֹשָׁה גַּרְגְּרִים בְּרֹאשׁ אָמִיר; אַרְבָּעָה חֲמִשָּׁה בִּסְעִפֶיהָ פֹּרִיָּה נְאֻם ה׳ אֱ־לֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃</p> <p lang=en>Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as at the beating of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the branches of the fruitful tree, saith the L-RD, the G-d of Israel.</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו יז:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>והיה אם לא חפצת בה ושלחתה לנפשה ומכר לא תמכרנה בכסף; לא תתעמר בה תחת אשר עניתה׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים כא:יד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כי ימצא איש גנב נפש מאחיו מבני ישראל והתעמר בו ומכרו ומת הגנב ההוא ובערת הרע מקרבך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים כד:ז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וְאַתֶּם כֹּהֲנֵי ה׳ תִּקָּרֵאוּ מְשָׁרְתֵי אֱ־לֹהֵינוּ יֵאָמֵר לָכֶם; חֵיל גּוֹיִם תֹּאכֵלוּ וּבִכְבוֹדָם תִּתְיַמָּרוּ׃</p> <p lang=en>But ye shall be named the priests of the L-RD, men shall call you the ministers of our G-d; ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their splendour shall ye revel.</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו סא:ו</footer></blockquote> And the cognate in Arabic is particularly strong, and connects it to אמר, "say": <blockquote lang=en><p>Amir, meaning "lord" or "commander-in-chief", is derived from the Arabic root a-m-r, "command". Originally simply meaning commander-in-chief or leader, usually in reference to a group of people, it came to be used as a title for governors or rulers, usually in smaller states, and in modern Arabic is analogous to the English word "prince".</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emir">Wikipedia, <cite>Emir</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <hr/> So ה׳ הֶאֱמִירְךָ means, "ה׳ has allowed you to lord over others", and it's because the Jews are special, להיות לו לעם סגלה. And that is only because of the Torah: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וה׳ האמירך היום</em>: חשיב המעלות שהבדיל את ישראל ורומם אותם כו׳, ”ולשמור כל מצותיו“ זהו כמו שאמרו (סנהדריו נח,ב) בן נח ששבת חייב מיתה, ואסור לשמור השבת ששקולה ככל המצות (ירושלמי ברכות א:ה). וכן בן נח שלמד תורה חייב מיתה ששקולה כנגד כולם (משנה פאה א:א), רק לישראל נתן ”לשמור כל מצותיו“.</p> <p><em>להיות לו לעם סגולה כו׳</em>: הוא בתורה ומצות.</p> <p><em>ולתתך עליון כו׳ לתהלה ולשם ולתפארת</em>, פי׳ בחכמה ובעושר ובנימוס וסדר נאה.</p> <footer class=source>משך חכמה, כי תשא כו:יח-יט</footer></blockquote> (which brings up my favorite inside joke) <blockquote lang=en><p>Two guys have been learning the Talmud together for 20 years. One of them says to the other one, “You know, my daughter is getting married next month. We’ve been learning together for years, and so I’d like to honor you with being one of the witnesses at the ceremony.”</p> <p>"I'm sorry, I can't."</p> <p>"But why can't you?"</p> <p>"I'm not Jewish."</p> <p>"What do you mean? We have been learning together for 20 years. You're as <i lang=he>frum</i> as I am."</p> <p>"I enjoy the intellectual stimulation."</p> <p>"But we learned that a gentile that keep shabbos is <i lang=he>chayav misah</i>! "</p> <p>"I never kept <i lang=he>shabbos</i>. Every time I was ready to leave my house, I put a key in my pocket." </p> <p>"But we have an <i lang=he>eruv</i> here!"</p> <p>"I don't hold from that <i lang=he>eruv</i>."</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.jewishmag.com/52mag/humor/humor.htm">The Jewish Magazine, Purim 2002</a>, adapted a little</footer></blockquote> <hr/> This idea, that "chosen-ness" is solely due to our relationship with the Torah is important. Psychiatrist Scott Alexander (who has a fascinating blog at <a href="http://slatestarcodex.com/">slatestarcodex.com</a>) notes that Ashkenazi Jews seem to be particularly smart: <a href="http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/05/29/four-nobel-truths/"><img src=/images/nobel_countries3.png alt="Nobel Prizes by Country" /></a> He is an atheist and rationalist, so he likes the hypothesis that this is due genetic selection, specifically for <a href="http://web.mit.edu/fustflum/documents/papers/AshkenaziIQ.jbiosocsci.pdf">heterozygotes in the biochemical pathways related to neuron-associated lipids</a>. Thus Jews selected for smart children at the expense of the risk of fatal genetic disorders in homozygotes; look at the <a href="http://web.mit.edu/fustflum/documents/papers/AshkenaziIQ.jbiosocsci.pdf">Cochran, Hardy and Harpending paper</a> for details. In fact one of his commentators said, in a post about how many Jewish Hungarian physics geniuses there were ("<a href="http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/05/26/the-atomic-bomb-considered-as-hungarian-high-school-science-fair-project/">the atomic bomb [was] basically a Hungarian high school science fair project</a>"): <blockquote lang=en><p>Maybe something to do with not taking their Judaism as seriously? I don’t think most of the nobel prize winners are very devout, and back in the 20s most Jews were still very religious. If Jews elsewhere are wasting brain labor on Torah and Talmud while the Hungarian ones are free to focus on math and science, that could go a long way in explaining the descrepancy.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/05/29/four-nobel-truths/#comment-505347">nelshoy</a></footer></blockquote> I think this idea, that intelligence is genetically determined (and Jews have a lot of it) is both ethically abhorrent and scientifically wrong (and, since it's ethically wrong, I won't look for data about the scientific part). I think nelshoy missed the point entirely. The ייִדישער קאָפּ is culturally created. Torah and Talmud are not "wasting brain labor"; they are the basis of what our brains are for. Nuclear physics is just a fortunate (or maybe unfortunate) side effect. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> ראה למדתי אתכם חקים ומשפטים כאשר צוני ה׳ אלהי; לעשות כן בקרב הארץ אשר אתם באים שמה לרשתה׃ <b>ו</b> ושמרתם ועשיתם כי הוא חכמתכם ובינתכם לעיני העמים; אשר ישמעון את כל החקים האלה ואמרו רק עם חכם ונבון הגוי הגדול הזה׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ד</footer></blockquote> And this goes back to an incredibly important אור החיים, that as Jews we should never have pride in our supposedly superior intelligence. It's only through learning and living Torah that we have anything special: <blockquote lang=he><p>וראיתי לתת לב איך זכה יתרו שתכתב על ידו פרשה זו, והן אמת כי הוא כבד משה עבד ה׳ והנה שכרו שכבדו ה׳, אלא היה ה׳ יכול עשות לו דרך כבוד אחר לא בדרך זה שיראה חס ושלום כפחות ידיעה בעם ה׳ עד שבא כהן מדין והשכילם.</p> <p>ונראה כי טעם הדבר הוא להראות ה׳ את בני ישראל הדור ההוא וכל דור ודור כי יש באומות גדולים בהבנה ובהשכלה, וצא ולמד מהשכלת יתרו בעצתו ואופן סדר בני אדם אשר בחר כי יש באומות מכירים דברים המאושרים, והכונה בזה כי לא באה הבחירה בישראל לצד שיש בהם השכלה והכרה יותר מכל האומות, וזה לך האות השכלת יתרו הא למדת כי לא מרוב חכמת ישראל והשכלתם בחר ה' בהם אלא לחסד עליון ולאהבת האבות. </p> <footer class=source>אור החיים, שמות יח:כא </footer></blockquote>
