The Chofetz Chaim has a nice metaphor about this: <blockquote lang=he><p>כאשר סיפרו ל־חפץ חיים בהתפעלות על המצלמה הראשונה, הגיב במפתיע: העולם לא מתקדם. העולם נסוג אחורה.</p> <p>וכך הסביר: בדורות הקודמים האמינו היו אנשים בעלי אמנה, וכאשר למדו במשנה ”עין רואה ואוזן שומעת“, ידעו והפנימו כי אמנם כן הוא, אך בזמננו פסו אמונים מבני אדם וקמו להם ספקנים המיתממים ”מה פירוש עין רואה? וכי מחר יראו את העבירה שעברתי אתמול? ומה פירוש אוזן שומעת, אם דיברתי אמש שלא כהוגן, מחר יישמע קולי?“. לפיכך, באה לעולם המצאת המצלמה והוכיחה: הנה, המעשה שעשית--הונצח! ”עין רואה, אוזן שומעת וכל מעשיך בספר נכתבים“.</p> <footer class=source>שלמה קוק, <a href="http://www.kolhazman.co.il/28715"><cite>מי האיש החפץ חיים</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Our generation is clearly even more נסוג אחורה, since now it's not a metaphor. <em>Everything</em> is watched and recorded. <a href=https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/right><img src=/images/smbc-right.png alt="The watchers are watching" /></a> <hr/> But Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky is bothered by this. Were Reuven, Aharon and Boaz so vain that they needed the fame to do the right thing? If they had known that their deeds would be recorded, they would have done a better job? He has two answers: <blockquote lang=he><p>באור הענין לפענ״ד, שראובן, וכן אהרון ובועז, לא ידעו שדבר גדול נעשה כעת על ידיהן, והיה ראובן דומה שהוא מציל רק אח, אבל באמת אילו היה מוליכו אצל אביו היה חוסך את גלות מצרים; וכן שליחותו של משה [לפרעה] היה ג״כ ענין חשוב למאד שהרי כל התורה כולה תלויה ביצאת מצרים,וכן משא ומתן של בועז הוא ענין של לידת דוד המלך עליו השלום, והללו בעת שהיו עוסקים בענין זה לא החשיבו הענינים כל כך. </p> <p>ויותר נכון לומר שהם לא ידעו שעשייתם זאת יהיה תורה, שהתורה וכן הנביאים יביאו עובדא זו לדורות, אילו יהו יודעין ענין היסטורי הוא, <em>בודאי שהיו מיפין את פנימיותם, שגם הבר יהיה גודל הערך</em>,שהרי הענין לדורות הוא. ולפיכך סיימו חז״ל שגם עתה אל ידמה האדם שכיון שהתורה כבר חתומה אין שום חשיבות במעשים, אלא לא כן הדבר. כל מעשה טוב של יהודי הוא ענין של חטיבת עתידה של היהדות היא עד שאליהו ומשיח עוסקין בכתיבה והקב״ה חותם. </p> <footer class=source>אמת ליעקב, וישב לז:כא</footer></blockquote> This is an important point in understanding the narratives in תנ״ך. We approach the Torah with what Rav Shalom Carmy calls a "literary-theological approach": <blockquote lang=en><p> I call my own <i lang=he>derekh ha-limmud</i> a <em>literary-theological</em> approach...By theological, we assert the conviction that Bible is to be encountered as the word of G-d, rather than primarily as the object of academic investigation; we also refer to the authoritative presence of the interpretive tradition. The adjective literary comes to stress that understanding the word of G-d is not only a matter of apprehending propositions, but also of hearing them in their literary and historical context...</p> <footer class=source>Shalom Carmy, <a href="http://traditionarchive.org/news/originals/Volume%2028/No.%203/A%20Room%20With%20A%20View.pdf"><cite>A Room With a View, but a Room of Our Own</cite></a></footer></blockquote> People in Tanach <em>were</em> human beings, but <em>are</em> literary characters. There is a plot to the story and they each have a part to play. Would they have acted differently if they had known that we would still be reading about them, drawing lessons from them, three thousand years later? It's not out of pride but of an awareness that their actions would teach a lesson. Reuven here is the archetype of doing the right thing in the face of peer pressure; Aharon is the archetype of not being jealous of others' success. Boaz is the archetype of חסד to the stranger. It is most obvious in the stories of Reuven and Aharon that there is something different. Rashi makes a comment that seems obvious: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>למען הציל אתו</em>: רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ מְעִידָה עַל רְאוּבֵן שֶׁלֹּא אָמַר זֹאת אֶלָּא לְהַצִּיל אוֹתוֹ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לז:כב</footer></blockquote> The Torah never tells us what people are thinking (like by Aharon, וראך ושמח בלבו). All we see are external actions and words, and we have to derive the characters' internal states: <blockquote lang=en><p>[In the Bible] thoughts and feeling remain unexpressed, are only suggested by the silence and the fragmentary speeches; the whole, permeated with the most unrelieved suspense and directed toward a single goal...remains mysterious and “fraught with background.”</p> <footer class=source>Erich Auerbach, <cite>Mimesis</cite>, <a href="https://www.westmont.edu/~fisk/Articles/OdysseusScar.html"><cite>Chapter One: Odysseus's Scar</cite></a></footer></blockquote> There is an implied criticism that the midrash is picking up on. The רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ finds it necessary to tell us what they were thinking; they didn't show it well enough. The advice to authors is always <a href="https://jerryjenkins.com/show-dont-tell/">"show, don't tell"</a>. That's good advice for the characters as well. But the point that the midrash is making is that <em>we</em> are also literary characters; there is a plot and purpose to our lives. If we are going to be an object lesson to others, we must "show, don't tell". Narrative psychology encourages everyone to think of their lives as a story: <blockquote lang=en><p>In Paul Murray's novel Skippy Dies, there’s a point where the main character, Howard, has an existential crisis.“‘It’s just not how I expected my life would be,'" he says.</p> <p>“‘What did you expect?’” a friend responds.</p> <p>“Howard ponders this. ‘I suppose—this sounds stupid, but I suppose I thought there’d be more of a <em>narrative arc</em>.’”</p> ... <p>“You’re both the narrator and the main character of your story,” [psychologist Jonathan] Adler says. “That can sometimes be a revelation—‘Oh, I’m not just living out this story, I am actually in charge of this story.’”</p> <footer class=source>Julie Beck, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/08/life-stories-narrative-psychology-redemption-mental-health/400796/"><cite>Life's Stories</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Being part of כלל ישראל is even more: <blockquote lang=en><p>...if a literature is called rich in the possession of a few classic tragedies, what shall we say to a National Tragedy lasting for fifteen hundred years, in which the poets and the actors were also the heroes?</p> <footer class=source>George Eliot, <cite>Daniel Deronda</cite>, introduction to chapter 42, quoting Leopold Zunz</footer></blockquote> וַיַּקְשֵׁב ה׳ וַיִּשְׁמָע וַיִּכָּתֵב סֵפֶר זִכָּרוֹן לְפָנָיו לְיִרְאֵי ה׳ וּלְחֹשְׁבֵי שְׁמוֹ. What we do, the way we act is being watched and recorded. We are a lesson not only to those around us but for the future, and we need to act like it.
