<a href="/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%A9%D7%AA+%D7%9C%D7%9A+%D7%9C%D7%9A+%D7%AA%D7%A9%D7%B4%D7%A4">Last week</a>, we talked about Avraham's backstory, the reason he was chosen. David Hirschhorn pointed out that there's a pasuk in this week's parasha that seems to give a different reason: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טז</b> ויקמו משם האנשים וישקפו על פני סדם; ואברהם הלך עמם לשלחם׃ <b>יז</b> וה׳ אמר; המכסה אני מאברהם אשר אני עשה׃ <b>יח</b> ואברהם היו יהיה לגוי גדול ועצום; ונברכו בו כל גויי הארץ׃ <b>יט</b> כי ידעתיו למען אשר יצוה את בניו ואת ביתו אחריו ושמרו דרך ה׳ לעשות צדקה ומשפט למען הביא ה׳ על אברהם את אשר דבר עליו׃ <b>כ</b> ויאמר ה׳ זעקת סדם ועמרה כי רבה; וחטאתם כי כבדה מאד׃ <b>כא</b> ארדה נא ואראה הכצעקתה הבאה אלי עשו כלה; ואם לא אדעה׃ <b>כב</b> ויפנו משם האנשים וילכו סדמה; ואברהם עודנו עמד לפני ה׳׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק יח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>For I have loved him, because he commands his children and his household after him that they keep the way of Hashem, doing charity and justice, in order that Hashem might then bring upon Abraham that which He had spoken of him.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, <i lang=he>Genesis</i> 18:19</footer></blockquote> The problem is understanding the words ידעתיו and למען. יְדַעְתִּיו literally means "I knew him", but not in the sense of "I knew about him"; that would be ֹיְדַעְתּו. And לְמַעַן literally means "so that"; ידעתיו so that יצוה את בניו. ידעתיו is the reason for יצוה את בניו. "Because" means the opposite; ידעתיו because יצוה את בניו means יצוה את בניו is the reason for ידעתיו. Onkelos ignores both problems: <blockquote lang=he><p>ארי גלי קדמי בדיל דיפקיד ית בנוהי וית אנש ביתיה בתרוהי ויטרון אורחן דתקנן קדם יי למעבד צדקתא ודינא בדיל דייתי יי על אברהם ית דמליל עלוהי.</p> <footer class=source>תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית יח:יט </footer></blockquote> And Rashi is bothered by Onkelos, so he gives the meaning that is adopted by Artscroll: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי ידעתיו</em>: לשון חיבה, כמו (רות ב:א) מודע לאישה, (שם ג:ב) הלא בועז מודעתנו, (שמות לג:יז) ואדעך בשם, ואמנם עיקר לשון כולם אינו אלא לשון ידיעה, שהמחבב את האדם מקרבו אצלו ויודעו ומכירו. ולמה ידעתיו?</p> <p><em>למען אשר יצוה</em>: <em>לפי</em> שהוא מצוה את בניו עלי לשמור דרכי. ואם תפרשהו כתרגומו יודע אני בו שיצוה את בניו וגו׳, אין למען נופל על הלשון.</p> <p><em>יצוה</em>: לשון הווה, כמו (איוב א:ה) ככה יעשה איוב.</p> <p><em>למען הביא</em>: כך הוא מצוה לבניו שמרו דרך ה׳ כדי שיביא ה׳ על אברהם וגו׳.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית יח:יט</footer></blockquote> The reason for ה׳ loving Avraham and acknowledging him, the reason for his election, is the fact that he commands his children to do charity and justice. The Ramban quotes Rashi, then explains that למען means "so that": <blockquote lang=he><p> ויתכן שיהיה ”ידעתיו“, גדלתיו ורוממתיו, <em>בעבור אשר יצוה</em> את בניו אחריו לעשות את הישר לפני, ולכך אשימנו לגוי גדול ועצום שיעבדוני </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, בראשית יח:יט</footer></blockquote> Avraham was elected to fulfill the task of יצוה את בניו. גדלתיו (similar to Rashi's לשון חיבה) causes the יצוה את בניו. There must have been something in Avraham before this that warranted that election, as we discussed last week. The problem remains, what's the connection to our parasha? Why not mention it back in לך לך? Rashi doesn't really have an answer, but cites a midrash: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ואברהם היו יהיה</em>: מדרש אגדה (משלי י:ז) ”זכר צדיק לברכה“, הואיל והזכירו ברכו. ופשוטו וכי ממנו אני מעלים, והרי הוא חביב לפני להיות לגוי גדול ולהתברך בו כל גויי הארץ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית יח:יח </footer></blockquote> <hr/> So other מפרשים translate ידעתיו not as "I knew (loved, acknowledged, exalted) him" but as "I made him know". ה׳ is saying that I need to let Avraham know about Sodom and its fate because (למען) he needs to tell his descendants about it. It has nothing to do with the reasons for Avraham's election. <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי ידעתיו</em>: נגד מה שאמר המכסה אני מאברהם אמר כי ידעתיו, כלומר אודיעהו את הדבר אשר אני עושה...ואמר סבת ההודעה הוא, כדי שידעו דורות הבאים טעם עונש הרשעים האלה, ויהיו נשמרים מלעשות כתעבותיהם, וז״ש ”למען אשר יצוה וגו׳ ושמרו צדקה ומשפט“, כי בשני אלו קלקלו אנשי סדום.</p> <footer class=source>הכתב והקבלה, בראשית יח:יט</footer></blockquote> ה׳ tells Avraham not in order to get him to pray for Sodom, but simply to inform him. <hr/> Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky argues that in fact, ה׳ tells Avraham about the sins and fate of Sodom so that he will pray, and that fact--that he prays for Sodom-- is the essence of the lesson למען אשר יצוה את בניו...לעשות צדקה ומשפט: <blockquote lang=he><p>הנה הפסוקים הקודמים הציגה לנו התורה את מדת הכנסת אורחים של אברהם אבינו, ותיכף לאחר זה מפרטת התורה את מעשה סדום--שעיקר חטאתם היה בהכנסת אורחים--ותפילת אברהם להצילם...ובפרט אברהם, שהיה סמל עמוד החסד בעולם...ואעפ״כ מסר אברהם נפשו להתפלל עליהם עד שהוצרך כמה פעמים להקדים שלא יחר אף ה׳ עליו, והרי זה לימוד גדול בגדלות הנפש של אברהם אבינו.</p> <footer class=source>אמת ליעקב, וירא יח:יז</footer></blockquote> Doing good for evil people is not an easy decision, and in fact was a test, a נסיון for Avraham. <blockquote lang=en><p>In 1971, philosopher John Rawls concluded in <cite>A Theory of Justice</cite> that a just society must tolerate the intolerant, for otherwise, the society would then itself be intolerant, and thus unjust. However, Rawls also insists, like Popper, that society has a reasonable right of self-preservation against acts of intolerance that supersedes the principle of tolerance.</p> <footer class=source>Wikipedia, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance"><cite>Paradox of tolerance</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>עשרה נסיונות נתנסה אברהם אבינו עליו השלום ועמד בכולם, להודיע כמה חבתו של אברהם אבינו עליו השלום.</p> <footer class=source>משנה אבות ה:ג</footer></blockquote> The point of a Divine "test" is not to let ה׳ know what a person will do (ה׳ already knows the answer); it's to let *the person* learn something about themselves. That's what ידעתיו means: I am going to tell Avraham about Sodom, so he can wrestle with the moral dilemmas involved and work on discovering the truth, and *that* is what he will pass on to his children. Letting us know what we are capable of is part of ה׳'s חיבה: <blockquote lang=he><p>הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, חָבִיב אָדָם שֶׁנִּבְרָא בְּצֶלֶם. חִבָּה יְתֵרָה נוֹדַעַת לוֹ שֶׁנִּבְרָא בְּצֶלֶם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית ט:ה) כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹקִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם.</p> <p>חֲבִיבִין יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁנִּקְרְאוּ בָּנִים לַמָּקוֹם. חִבָּה יְתֵרָה נוֹדַעַת לָהֶם שֶׁנִּקְרְאוּ בָּנִים לַמָּקוֹם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (דברים יד:א) בָּנִים אַתֶּם לַה׳ אֱלֹקֵיכֶם.</p> <footer class=source>משנה אבות ג:יד</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And that connects to the great נסיון at the end of the parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר אל תשלח ידך אל הנער ואל תעש לו מאומה; כי עתה ידעתי כי ירא אלקים אתה ולא חשכת את בנך את יחידך ממני׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית כב:יב </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי עתה ידעתי</em>: כלומר עתה אני רואה ונתפרסם לכל העולם כי ירא אלקים אתה.</p> <footer class=source>רשב״ם, בראשית כב:יב </footer></blockquote> This final test was to inform both Avraham and the world about what Avraham was capable of. So why does Rashi insist on translating למען as לפי, "because", rather than בעבור, "so that"? I would propose that it's a more midrashic understanding of ה׳'s statement that goes back to the meaning of נסיון. G-d knows how we will respond to the test; that's the nature of omniscience. ה׳ gives us the test *because* it will have the desired result. But *we* don't know how it will turn out, how we will rise to the challenge. The test is "so that" we can accomplish things we didn't think we were capable of, and *that* is the lesson that Avraham will pass on to his descendants: ידעתיו למען אשר יצוה את בניו ואת ביתו אחריו ושמרו דרך ה׳ לעשות צדקה ומשפט.
