This is largely a recap of <a href="/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%A9%D7%AA+%D7%95%D7%99%D7%A7%D7%A8%D7%90+%D7%AA%D7%A9%D7%A2%D7%B4%D7%97">פרשת ויקרא תשע״ח</a> Last week's parasha was about the erection of the משכן. This week's parasha starts shortly after that ceremony: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויקרא אל משה; וידבר ה׳ אליו מאהל מועד לאמר׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>He called to Moses, and Hashem spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying:</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, <i lang=la>loc. sit.</i></footer></blockquote> The subject, "ה׳", comes too late in the sentence, after the implied pronoun. The Malbim explains that ויקרא אל משה וידבר is a sort of hendiadys: <blockquote lang=he><p> מחקי מליצת לשון הקדש כשיבואו שני פעלים על פועל אחד יבוא תמיד שם הפועל בין שני הפעלים, ”וירא ה׳ אל אברם ויאמר“ (בראשית יב). ”ויגש אברהם ויאמר“ (שם יח). ”ויגדל הילד ויגמל“ (שם כא). ”ותהר לאה ותלד בן“ (שם כט). וכן תמיד...ובמקומות שבא שם הפועל אחר הפעל השני, הוא זרות וסירוס בלשון, כמו פה שצריך לסרס הכתוב ולפרש שהשם שכתוב אחר וידבר מוסב על ויקרא: ”ויקרא ה׳“...כל מקום שבא סירוס כזה בא להשוות שני הפעלים זה לזה, ללמד שהיו דומים באיזה דבר, ולזה הם תכופים זה לזה ורוח לא יבוא ביניהם. </p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> So translate it as "Hashem called to Moses by speaking". <hr/> And this is important, because immediately before, after the יום השמיני ceremony, ה׳ did <em>not</em> talk to Moshe: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לד</b> ויכס הענן את אהל מועד; וכבוד ה׳ מלא את המשכן׃ <b>לה</b> ולא יכל משה לבוא אל אהל מועד כי שכן עליו הענן; וכבוד ה׳ מלא את המשכן׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק מ</footer></blockquote> Which is why we emphasize that ה׳ called Moshe now: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויקרא אל משה</em>: לפי שכתוב למעלה בסוף הספר ”ולא יכול משה לבא אל אהל מועד וגו׳“, לכך קראהו הקורא מתוך אהל מועד. </p> <footer class=source>רשב״ם, ויקרא א:א </footer></blockquote> What makes that interesting is that *before* the משכן was built, Moshe could talk to ה׳ anytime: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ז</b> ומשה יקח את האהל ונטה לו מחוץ למחנה הרחק מן המחנה וקרא לו אהל מועד; והיה כל מבקש ה׳ יצא אל אהל מועד אשר מחוץ למחנה׃ <b>ח</b> והיה כצאת משה אל האהל יקומו כל העם ונצבו איש פתח אהלו; והביטו אחרי משה עד באו האהלה׃ <b>ט</b> והיה כבא משה האהלה ירד עמוד הענן ועמד פתח האהל; ודבר עם משה׃ <b>י</b> וראה כל העם את עמוד הענן עמד פתח האהל; וקם כל העם והשתחוו איש פתח אהלו׃ <b>יא</b> ודבר ה׳ אל משה פנים אל פנים כאשר ידבר איש אל רעהו; ושב אל המחנה ומשרתו יהושע בן נון נער לא ימיש מתוך האהל׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק לג</footer></blockquote> Imagine the scene: for the past 6 months, every day, Moshe has gone to the office in the old אהל מועד, speaks with G-d כאשר ידבר איש אל רעהו. Yesterday was the big ceremony for the new אהל מועד. Today Moshe goes to the office, <em>and his keys don't work</em>. G-d tells him, "No problem, I'll buzz you in". But he's never needed to be buzzed in before! There's a change in relationship implicit in this ויקרא אל משה וידבר. And this is how things will be from now on: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויקרא אל משה</em>: לכל דברות ולכל אמירות ולכל צוויים קדמה קריאה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> <hr/> What has changed? First we need to look at another peculiarity of the pasuk, ויקרא אל משה. There's a difference between קרא ל־ and קרא אל: <blockquote lang=he><p> והיטב דברו בזה האחרונים שקריאה <em>ל</em>פלוני מורה שהיה הקרוא רחוק ממנו ושולח אחריו שיבא אליו...אבל בכל מקום שאומר קרא <em>אל</em> פלוני, מורה שהקרוא עומד לפני הקורא או קרוב אליו והקריאה הוא דרך כבוד וחבה שמזמינהו אל הדבור, וכלל זה בדוק בכל מקום.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> For example: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ל</b> ויקם פרעה לילה הוא וכל עבדיו וכל מצרים ותהי צעקה גדלה במצרים; כי אין בית אשר אין שם מת׃ <b>לא</b> <em>ויקרא למשה ולאהרן</em> לילה ויאמר קומו צאו מתוך עמי גם אתם גם בני ישראל; ולכו עבדו את ה׳ כדברכם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וישלח משה <em>לקרא לדתן ולאבירם </em>בני אליאב; ויאמרו לא נעלה׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר טז:יב</footer></blockquote> Note the distinction when שמואל is called: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> <em>ויקרא ה׳ אל</em> שמואל ויאמר הנני׃ <b>ה</b> וירץ אל עלי ויאמר הנני כי <em>קראת לי</em> ויאמר לא קראתי שוב שכב; וילך וישכב׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק ג</footer></blockquote> And strikingly in the narrative about Moshe going up הר סיני: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> ומשה עלה אל האלקים; <em>ויקרא אליו</em> ה׳ מן ההר לאמר כה תאמר לבית יעקב ותגיד לבני ישראל׃ ...<b>יד</b> וירד משה מן ההר אל העם; ויקדש את העם ויכבסו שמלתם׃ ...<b>כ</b> וירד ה׳ על הר סיני אל ראש ההר; <em>ויקרא ה׳ ל</em>משה אל ראש ההר ויעל משה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יט</footer></blockquote> Artscroll makes the distinction: <blockquote lang=en><p><b>3</b> Moses ascended to G-d, and Hashem <em>called to him</em> from the mountain, saying, "So shall you say to the House of Jacob and relate to the Children of Israel..." <b>14</b> Moses descended from the mountain to the people. He sanctified the people and they washed their clothing. ...<b>20</b> Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai to the top of the mountain; Hashem <em>summoned</em> Moses the top of the mountain, and Moses ascended.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, <i lang=la>loc. sit.</i></footer></blockquote> There are four times Moshe is addressed with קרא אל: <blockquote lang=he><p>וירא ה׳ כי סר לראות; <em>ויקרא אליו</em> אלקים מתוך הסנה ויאמר משה משה ויאמר הנני׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ג:ד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ומשה עלה אל האלקים; <em>ויקרא אליו</em> ה׳ מן ההר לאמר כה תאמר לבית יעקב ותגיד לבני ישראל׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות יט:ג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טו</b> ויעל משה אל ההר; ויכס הענן את ההר׃ <b>טז</b> וישכן כבוד ה׳ על הר סיני ויכסהו הענן ששת ימים; <em>ויקרא אל</em> משה ביום השביעי מתוך הענן׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק כד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויקרא אל</em> משה; וידבר ה׳ אליו מאהל מועד לאמר׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> To be called, קרא אל, by ה׳ is to have a "calling": <blockquote lang=en><dl> <dt>calling</dt> <dd>a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence</dd> </dl> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/calling">Merriam-Webster, <cite>calling</cite>, definition 1</a></footer></blockquote> Moshe has four separate callings. The first is Moshe's mission to take בני ישראל out of Egypt. The second is to get them ready to accept the Torah. The third is to get the Torah itself, to be on the level of the angels, 40 days without food or water. What is this קריאה, the last one of Moshe's career? Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski (the psychiatrist) talks about how difficult change is. <blockquote lang=en><p>Growth is change, and although it is a positive and desirable change, it is a change nonetheless. Our natural tendency is to maintain the status quo rather than to change. We are likely to fail to interpret the signal of discomfort correctly, and rather than see it as an opportunity for growth, we may try to eliminate the discomfort...</p> <p>Each time G-d called to Moses, it was a new challenge for Moses to elevate himself to an even higher level of spirituality. This was an urging him to grow, and although it made greater demands of him, he knew it was a sign of Divine love, whereby he would be stimulated to become all that he could be.</p> <p>Every person has potential that he has not realized. Achieving maximum growth is not likely to come easily, but if we are wise, we will understand that "growing pains" are a signal of Divine love.</p> <footer class=source> Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski, <a href="https://www.artscroll.com/Products/LIWH.html"><cite>Living Each Week</cite></a>, Vayikra, p. 200</footer></blockquote> But this doesn't sound like growth; it sounds like a demotion. What was Moshe supposed to do when he is called to the אהל מועד? <hr/> After this קריאה, there is a series of ״וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר״ paragraphs, with all the laws of sacrifices. Then it ends with a summary: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לז</b> זאת התורה לעלה למנחה ולחטאת ולאשם; ולמלואים ולזבח השלמים׃ <b>לח</b> אשר צוה ה׳ את משה בהר סיני; ביום צותו את בני ישראל להקריב את קרבניהם לה׳ במדבר סיני׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק ז</footer></blockquote> Note the two terms, בהר סיני and במדבר סיני. The last clause is ambiguous: does במדבר סיני refer to where the sacrifices were brought, or where they were commanded? And who is the referent of צותו; who did the commanding? חז״ל understand במדבר סיני as referring to ביום צותו, and <em>that</em> refers to G-d's commandment. Thus: "This is the law..., which G-d *had* commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day that G-d commanded Israel in the Wilderness of Sinai, to bring their sacrifices". <blockquote lang=he><p>על דרך רבותינו (תורת כהנים בהר פרשה א:א) כי כל המצות נאמרו למשה בהר סיני, כללותיהן ופרטיהן ודקדוקיהן, ונשנו מהן באהל מועד, והנה מצות ויקרא שנויות.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, ויקרא ז:לח </footer></blockquote> Moshe had been given the entire Torah on Sinai, but he hadn't <em>learned</em> it: <blockquote lang=he><p> ויתן אל משה ככלתו לדבר אתו בהר סיני שני לחת העדת לחת אבן כתבים באצבע אלקים׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות לא:יח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ככלתו</em>: ככלתו כתיב חסר, שנמסרה לו תורה במתנה ככלה לחתן, שלא היה יכול ללמוד כולה בזמן מועט כזה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> <hr/> His role is now to *learn* Torah, so that he can teach it to the people. That takes hard work, and is never a gift. In the אהל מועד, Moshe would now have a חברותא with ה׳, learning Torah, and teaching it to בני ישראל. His new role is to become משה רבינו. And now he will not talk כאשר ידבר איש אל רעהו (though he still is at the level of פנים אל פנים), but all his communication with ה׳ will be for the sake of teaching בני ישראל. This is hinted at in our pasuk: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויקרא אל משה; וידבר ה׳ אליו מאהל מועד <em>לאמר</em>׃ <b>ב</b> <em>דבר אל בני ישראל</em> ואמרת אלהם אדם כי יקריב מכם קרבן לה׳ מן הבהמה מן הבקר ומן הצאן תקריבו את קרבנכם׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר</em>: אמרו המפרשים (רד׳׳ק ספר השרשים שרש אמר) כי מלת ”לאמר“ בכל התורה לאמר לישראל, והטעם שיאמר השם למשה אמור לישראל דברי אלה.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, שמות ו:י</footer></blockquote> The לאמר seems redundant with דבר אל בני ישראל, but Moshe is being told that he has to tell בני ישראל that he was commanded to speak to them: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>לאמר</em>: צא ואמור להם דברי כבושים, בשבילכם הוא נדבר עמי, שכן מצינו שכל שלשים ושמונה שנה שהיו ישראל במדבר כמנודים, מן המרגלים ואילך, לא נתייחד הדבור עם משה, שנאמר (דברים ב:טז) ויהי כאשר תמו כל אנשי המלחמה למות וידבר ה׳ אלי לאמר, אלי היה הדיבור.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, ויקרא א:א</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And that role, of תלמיד חכם, to be a חכם by being a perpetual תלמיד, he will pass on to כנסת ישראל as a whole: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כט:א</b> <em>ויקרא משה אל</em> כל ישראל...</p> <p><b>ל:יא</b> כי המצוה הזאת אשר אנכי מצוך היום לא נפלאת הוא ממך ולא רחקה הוא׃ <b>ל:יב</b> לא בשמים הוא; לאמר מי יעלה לנו השמימה ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>ל:יג</b> ולא מעבר לים הוא; לאמר מי יעבר לנו אל עבר הים ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>ל:יד</b> כי קרוב אליך הדבר מאד; בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו׃</p> <footer class=source>ספר דברים</footer></blockquote> And having to work to achieve that, in learning and in spirituality, is a higher level than simply being given it. <blockquote lang=he><p>בן הא הא אומר, לפום צערא אגרא.</p> <footer class=source>משנה אבות ה:כג</footer></blockquote>
