<blockquote lang="he"><p><b>א</b> ויקר<small>א</small> אל משה; וידבר ה׳ אליו מאהל מועד לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם אדם כי יקריב מכם קרבן לה׳ מן הבהמה מן הבקר ומן הצאן תקריבו את קרבנכם׃</p> <footer class="source">ויקרא פרק א</footer></blockquote> <p>There is a famous debate between the Rambam and the Ramban about the purpose of the קרבנות. The Rambam feels that they were a concession to human nature:</p> <blockquote><p>It is, namely, impossible to go suddenly from one extreme to the other: it is therefore according to the nature of man impossible for him suddenly to discontinue everything to which he has been accustomed. Now G-d sent Moses to make [the Israelites] a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exod. xix. 6) by means of the knowledge of G-d...But the custom which was in those days general among all men, and the general mode of worship in which the Israelites were brought up, consisted in sacrificing animals in those temples which contained certain images, to bow down to those images, and to burn incense before them; religious and ascetic persons were in those days the persons that were devoted to the service in the temples erected to the stars, as has been explained by us. It was in accordance with the wisdom and plan of G-d, as displayed in the whole Creation, that He did not command us to give up and to discontinue all these manners of service; for to obey such a commandment it would have been contrary to the nature of man, who generally cleaves to that to which he is used; it would in those days have made the same impression as a prophet would make at present if he called us to the service of G-d and told us in His name, that we should not pray to Him, not fast, not seek His help in time of trouble; that we should serve Him in thought, and not by any action. For this reason G-d allowed these kinds of service to continue; He transferred to His service that which had formerly served as a worship of created beings, and of things imaginary and unreal, and commanded us to serve Him in the same manner; viz., to build unto Him a temple; comp. "And they shall make unto me a sanctuary" (Exod. xxv. 8); to have the altar erected to His name; comp. "An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me" (ibid. xx. 21); to offer the sacrifices to Him; comp. "If any man of you bring an offering unto the Lord" (Lev. i. 2), to bow down to Him and to burn incense before Him. He has forbidden to do any of these things to any other being; comp. "He who sacrificeth unto any G-d, save the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed" (Exod. xxii. 19); "For thou shalt bow down to no other god" (ibid. xxxiv. 14). He selected priests for the service in the temple; comp. "And they shall minister unto me in the priest's office" (ibid. xxviii. 41). </p> <p>... As the sacrificial service is not the primary object [of the commandments about sacrifice], whilst supplications, prayers, and similar kinds of worship are nearer to the primary object, and indispensable for obtaining it, a great difference was made in the Law between these two kinds of service. The one kind, which consists in offering sacrifices, although the sacrifices are offered to the name of G-d, has not been made obligatory for us to the same extent as it had been before. We were not commanded to sacrifice in every place, and in every time, or to build a temple in every place, or to permit any one who desires to become priest and to sacrifice. On the contrary, all this is prohibited unto us. Only one temple has been appointed, "in the place which the Lord shall choose" (Deut. xii. 26); in no other place is it allowed to sacrifice: comp. "Take heed to thyself, that thou offer not thy burnt-offerings in every place that thou seest" (ibid. v. 13); and only the members of a particular family were allowed to officiate as priests. All these restrictions served to limit this kind of worship, and keep it within those bounds within which G-d did not think it necessary to abolish sacrificial service altogether. But prayer and supplication can be offered everywhere and by every person. The same is the case with the commandment of zizit (Num. xv. 38); mezuzah (Deut. vi. 9; xi. 20); tefillin (Exod. xiii. 9, 16); and similar kinds of divine service.</p> <footer class="source"><cite>Guide for the Perplexed</cite>, 3:32, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1619492385/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1619492385&linkCode=as2&tag=bililitecom-20">Friedlander translation</a></footer></blockquote> <p>The implication is that the קרבנות are not the ideal way to worship ה׳. Presumably the Rambam would argue that a more "intellectual" (or philosophical) approach would be better, but the Jews of the time the Torah was given were too steeped in idolatry to handle anything that abstract. <a href="https://www.mhcny.org/pdf/MN/Maimonides%20on%20Sacrifices.pdf">Rabbi Moshe Shammah</a> brings the suggestion that the origin of the Rambam's statement is in the Midrash:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>רבי פנחס בשם רבי לוי אמר משל לבן מלך שגס לבו עליו והיה למד לאכול בשר נבילות וטריפות אמר המלך זה יהיה תדיר על שולחני ומעצמו הוא נדור (גדור) כך לפי שהיו ישראל להוטים אחר עבודת כוכבים במצרים והיו מביאים קרבניהם לשעירים דכתיב (ויקרא טז) ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירים...אמר הקב"ה יהיו מקריבין לפני בכל עת קרבנותיהן באהל מועד והן נפרשים מעבודת כוכבים והם ניצולים הה"ד איש איש מבית ישראל וגו':</p> <footer class="source">ויקרא רבה, אחרי מות, כב:ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>ה</b> למען אשר יביאו בני ישראל את זבחיהם אשר הם זבחים על פני השדה והביאם לה׳ אל פתח אהל מועד אל הכהן; וזבחו זבחי שלמים לה׳ אותם׃ <b>ו</b> וזרק הכהן את הדם על מזבח ה׳ פתח אהל מועד; והקטיר החלב לריח ניחח לה׳׃ <b>ז</b> ולא יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירם אשר הם זנים אחריהם; חקת עולם תהיה זאת להם לדרתם׃ </p> <footer class="source">ויקרא פרק יז</footer></blockquote> <p>But what about now, in more "enlightened" times? The Rambam to my knowledge never goes this far, but most assume that he would hold that we should <em>not</em> try to re-establish the sacrifices, since we don't need them now. That's pretty radical; it implies that he would take our hope for the rebuilding of the בית מקדש at least in part allegorically: (מלאכי ג:ד)‎ וערבה לה׳ מנחת יהודה וירושלם כימי עולם וכשנים קדמנית. This idea is not explicitly in the Rambam, and I would argue that he would assume that in the days of משיך we would still need קרבנות. They are a concession to human nature, not human history. We need some kind of physical representation to feel close to הקב״ה, which is <em>why</em> the ancient pagans used that mode of worship.</p> <p>It is kind of like the argument of the Seforno that before the sin of the Golden Calf, there was never supposed to be a physical building to centralize the service; everyone would <em>be</em> a מקום שכינה. But now that it is necessary, the requirement will not go away. We never really get more "enlightened".</p> <p>Nonetheless, the Ramban objects strenuously to the whole concept:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>...ואמר הרב במורה הנבוכים (ג מו) כי טעם הקרבנות בעבור שהמצרים והכשדים אשר היו ישראל גרים ותושבים בארצם מעולם היו עובדים לבקר ולצאן כי המצרים עובדים לטלה והכשדים עובדים לשדים אשר יראו להם בדמות שעירים ואנשי הודו עד היום לא ישחטו בקר לעולם בעבור כן צוה לשחוט אלה השלשה מינין לשם הנכבד כדי שיודע כי הדבר שהיו חושבים כי הם בתכלית העבירה הוא אשר יקריבו לבורא ובו יתכפרו העונות כי כן יתרפאו האמונות הרעות...ובהם האריך.</p> <p> והנה הם דברי הבאי ירפאו שבר גדול וקושיא רבה על נקלה יעשו שולחן ה׳ מגואל שאיננו רק להוציא מלבן של רשעים וטפשי עולם והכתוב אמר כי הם לחם אשה לריח ניחוח...והנה נח בצאתו מן התיבה עם שלשת בניו אין בעולם כשדי או מצרי הקריב קרבן וייטב בעיני ה' ואמר בו (בראשית ח:כא) וירח ה' את ריח הניחוח...והבל הביא גם הוא מבכורות צאנו ומחלביהן וישע ה׳ אל הבל ואל מנחתו (שם ד:ד) ולא היה עדיין בעולם שמץ ע״ז כלל...</p> <p>ולשון הקרבנות את קרבני לחמי לאשי ריח ניחוחי (במדבר כ:ב) וחלילה שלא יהא בהם שום תועלת ורצון רק שוללות ע״ז מדעת השוטים ויותר ראוי לשמוע הטעם שאומרים בהם כי בעבור שמעשי בני אדם נגמרים במחשבה ובדבור ובמעשה צוה השם כי כאשר יחטא יביא קרבן יסמוך ידיו עליו כנגד המעשה ויתודה בפיו כנגד הדבור וישרוף באש הקרב והכליות שהם כלי המחשבה והתאוה והכרעים כנגד ידיו ורגליו של אדם העושים כל מלאכתו ויזרוק הדם על המזבח כנגד דמו בנפשו כדי שיחשוב אדם בעשותו כל אלה כי חטא לאלקיו בגופו ובנפשו וראוי לו שישפך דמו וישרף גופו לולא חסד הבורא שלקח ממנו תמורה...ואלה דברים מתקבלים מושכים את הלב כדברי אגדה.</p> <footer class="source">רמב״ן, ויקרא א:ט, ד״ה עולה</footer></blockquote> <p>He then goes on to add an explanation "על דרך האמת", with kabbalistic overtones, that the act of sacrificing in fact brings us closer (the literal meaning of קרבן) to הקב״ה and serves to unite the "higher worlds". That sort of thing in above my pay grade, but the underlying idea that the קרבנות are not some kind of concession to human nature but the ideal method of worship. Prayer and study, while worthwhile, are the concessions to the reality of the loss of the קרבנות.</p> <p>That idea is appealing to those who yearn for the reestablishment of the בית המקדש, but then why don't we bring sacrifices now? Establishing an altar does not require a בית המקדש; there is explicitly a concept of a במה, an altar that is allowed when there is no central מקדש. The משך חכמה addresses this, and brings a new perspective to the argument between the Rambam and the Ramban, by arguing that both are right:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>הקדמונים נחלקו בטעם הקרבנות. המורה אמר כי הוא להרחיק לב האדם מעבודה זרה; והרמב״ן וסיעתו אמרו כי הוא לקרב כל כוחות העולמות; והוא ענין עלעקטרי רוחני, אשר בפועלות הכהן יעשה גבהות בעולמים שונים, כידוע. ואולי יש להכריע: כי קרבנות במה הם רק להרחיק עבודה זרה מלבבות עמו ישראל, לכן צוה כי יקטרו לשם שמים; לא כן קרבנות בית המקדש, המה ודאי לקרב העומות ולחבר דודים...ומקור לזה, הוא, דתנו בריש פרת חטאת (משנה זבחים יד:י) אין ריח ניחוח בבמה קטנה--הרי דקדשי במה אינם לריח ניחוח.</p> <footer class="source">משך חכמה, ויקרא, הקדמה</footer></blockquote> <p>And this concept, that the במה was a concession to human nature, has application to contemporary הלכה as well. There is another concession to human religious sensibility ; a mechanism for effectively creating our own הלכה: the נדר.</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>ובזה יובן הא דאמר רבי נתן: הנודר כאילו בנה במה וכו׳ (נדרים כב,א)--היינו, שבמה היא לגדור עצמו מעבודה זרה; אבל בזמן שבית המקדש קיים, הוא עושה רֶשַׁע בַּמֶה שגודר עצמו מעבודה זרה בהא דבונה במה, הלוא ה׳ בהכל קדשו, ויכול להקריב במקדש. כן הנודר--הוא רוצה לגדור עצמו בנדר, אבל הוא מוסיף פשע, שכבר גדרתו התורה באזהרותיה המאירות עינים. ודוק.</p> <footer class="source">משך חכמה, ויקרא, הקדמה</footer></blockquote> <p>So now we understand why we do not have a concept of במות today. We don't have the kind of spiritual drive that makes us <em>want</em> to bring קרבנות, so there is no longer any need. Why don't we feel that drive? In the days of תנ״ך it was overwhelming:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>רב אשי אוקי אשלשה מלכים אמר למחר נפתח בחברין. אתא מנשה איתחזי ליה בחלמיה. אמר חברך וחבירי דאבוך קרית לן? מהיכא בעית למישרא המוציא? אמר ליה לא ידענא! א״ל מהיכא דבעית למישרא המוציא לא גמירת וחברך קרית לן? א״ל אגמריה לי ולמחר דרישנא ליה משמך בפירקא. א״ל מהיכא דקרים בישולא. א״ל מאחר דחכימתו כולי האי מאי טעמא קא פלחיתו לעבודה זרה? א״ל אי הות התם הות נקיטנא בשיפולי גלימא ורהטת אבתראי. למחר אמר להו לרבנן נפתח ברבוותא.</p> <footer class="source">סנהדרין קב,ב</footer></blockquote> <p>Which brings up one of my favorite <i lang="he">sugiyot</i> in the gemara:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p>ובזה נתגלה לי סוד במה שחידש רבינו חיים כהן במגילה (י,א תוספות ד״ה ומאי) למאן דאמר לא קדשה לעתיד לבוא, מכל מקום בבמה אסור להקריב, ע״ש. משום דאנשי כנסת הגדולה ביטלי ליצרא דעבודה זרה (יומא סט,ב), אם כן תו אין צורך להקריב בבמה לגדור העם מעבודה זרה...בזמן הזה לכולי עלמא אין מקריבים בבמה, דבטל יצרא דעבודה זרה...</p> <footer class="source">משך חכמה, ויקרא, הקדמה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang="he"><p>(נחמיה ט) <em>ויצעקו אל ה׳ אלקים בקול גדול</em> מאי אמור אמר רב ואיתימא ר' יוחנן בייא בייא היינו האי דאחרביה למקדשא וקליה להיכליה וקטלינהו לכולהו צדיקי ואגלינהו לישראל מארעהון ועדיין מרקד בינן! כלום יהבתיה לן אלא לקבולי ביה אגרא לא איהו בעינן ולא אגריה בעינן. נפל להו פיתקא מרקיעא דהוה כתב בה אמת. אמר רב חנינא שמע מינה חותמו של הקב״ה אמת. אותיבו בתעניתא תלתא יומין ותלתא לילואתא. מסרוהו ניהליהו; נפק אתא כי גוריא דנורא מבית קדשי הקדשים. אמר להו נביא לישראל היינו יצרא דעבודה זרה שנאמר (זכריה ה) <em>ויאמר זאת הרשעה</em>...אמרו הואיל ועת רצון הוא נבעי רחמי איצרא דעבירה! בעו רחמי ואמסר בידייהו. אמר להו חזו דאי קטליתו ליה לההוא כליא עלמא. חבשוהו תלתא יומי ובעו ביעתא בת יומא בכל ארץ ישראל ולא אשתכח. אמרי היכי נעביד נקטליה כליא עלמא ניבעי רחמי אפלגא פלגא ברקיעא לא יהבי כחלינהו לעיניה ושבקוהו ואהני דלא מיגרי ביה לאיניש בקריבתה.</p> <footer class="source">יומא סט,ב</footer></blockquote> <p>אגרא לא איהו בעינן ולא אגריה בעינן--we do not want the reward and we do not want to pay the price. The "price" is the constant temptation of עבודה זרה. What is the reward that we are giving up? The גר״א explains that the יצר הרע for עבודה זרה is the desire for spirituality and the ability to feel the divine in all of creation. Lacking this, we have no need to worship "sticks and stones". But we lose the ability to feel spirituality at all, and this leads to the loss of נבואה.‎ זכריה was the last prophet. After this incident, the אנשי כנסת הגדולה had removed the sin of idol worship but had removed our ability to communicate with ה׳. This was the "reward" that they felt was worth losing, in order to have a chance of preventing another חורבן.</p> <p>Rabbi Jeremy Kagan, in his book <cite>The Jewish Self</cite>, connects this loss of spirituality with the rise of rationalism that we associate with Greek philosophy (specifically Aristotle). Whether we take the gemara literally, with יצר הרע leaping like a fiery lion from the קדשי הקדשים in response to the prayers of the אנשי כנסת הגדולה, or a historical development as humanity discovered the underlying rules of the universe, it is a fact that in this time period we lost נבואה along with עבודה זרה.</p> <p>So we have no יצר הרע for עבודה זרה today, with the price that we have no great yearning for closeness to הקב״ה. I won't decide whether it was worth it; it is the reality. The concept of קרבנות really is alien to us. Our mode of communication with הקב״ה is through prayer, and this is what we say before the עמידה:</p> <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>יז</b> א־דני שפתי תפתח; ופי יגיד תהלתך׃<br> <b>יח</b> כי לא תחפץ זבח ואתנה; עולה לא תרצה׃<br> <b>יט</b> זבחי אלקים רוח נשברה;<br>לב נשבר ונדכה אלקים לא תבזה׃<br> <b>כ</b> היטיבה ברצונך את ציון; תבנה חומות ירושלם׃<br> <b>כא</b> אז תחפץ זבחי צדק עולה וכליל;<br>אז יעלו על מזבחך פרים׃</p> <footer class="source">תהילים פרק נא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang="he"><p>ויבארו בזה פסוקי תהילים‎ <em>כי לא תחפץ זבח ואתנה; עולה לא תרצה</em>--פירוש: בבמה, שאין הקרבנות לריח נחוח. <em>היטיבה ברצונך את ציון; תבנה חומות ירושלם׃ אז תחפץ זבחי צדק ; עולה וכליל׃</em>--שאז יהיה עצם הקרבנות לקרב העולמות ולהועיל לכל העולם כולו.</p> <footer class="source">משך חכמה, ויקרא, הקדמה</footer></blockquote> <p>So part of what we pray for when we pray for the restoration of the בית המקדש is the restoration of the feeling that the בית המקדש and the קרבנות are important and relevant to us.</p>
