<p>I'm going to start pretty far afield, with the offerings that were brought at the dedication of the Mishkan:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יב</b> ויהי המקריב ביום הראשון את קרבנו: נחשון בן עמינדב למטה יהודה׃ <b>יג</b> וקרבנו קערת כסף אחת שלשים ומאה משקלה מזרק אחד כסף שבעים שקל בשקל הקדש; שניהם מלאים סלת בלולה בשמן למנחה׃ <b>יד</b> כף אחת עשרה זהב מלאה קטרת׃ <b>טו</b> פר אחד בן בקר איל אחד כבש אחד בן שנתו לעלה׃ <b>טז</b> שעיר עזים אחד לחטאת׃ <b>יז</b> ולזבח השלמים בקר שנים אילם חמשה עתודים חמשה כבשים בני שנה חמשה: זה קרבן נחשון בן עמינדב׃ </p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק ז</footer></blockquote> <p>The Midrash goes into great detail about the symbolism of each of these items. Rashi goes through a few of them. Here is what he says about the עולות:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>פר אחד</em> כנגד אברהם, שנאמר בו (בראשית יח:ז) ויקח בן בקר</p> <p><em>איל אחד</em> כנגד יצחק (שם כב:יג) ויקח את האיל וגו׳</p> <p><em>כבש אחד</em> כנגד יעקב (שם ל:מ) והכשבים הפריד יעקב</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם פסוק כא</footer></blockquote> <p>We know the incident with אברהם, when he served the three angels. We certainly know the incident with יצחק, the עקדה. What is the essence of Avrohom? Avrohom is the master of Chessed [kindness]. Therefore, by mentioning a young bull, the Medrash marshals an example of Avrohom's kindness - when Avrohom ran to the herd to bring a young bull to feed the Angels. The essence of Yitzchok is Gevurah [spiritual strength]. The Torah portrays this attribute of Yitzchok's Awe and Fear of G-d through the Akaidas Yitzchok - the Binding of Isaac. Therefore, the ram alludes to Yitzchok.</p> <p>We are able to understand that the first two references epitomize Avrohom and Yitzchak. However, how does the incident with Lavan's sheep represent the essence of Yaakov? Why does the Medrash use that pasuk?</p> <p>Rav Bergman, in his sefer [book] Sha'arei Orah, points out that the reason why Yaakov separated the sheep was to insure that Lavan would not have the slightest suspicion that Yaakov was trying to cheat.</p> <p>Yaakov wanted all of his sheep to be one kind and all of Lavan's sheep to be another kind, so that Lavan would not be able to claim that Yaakov took any of his sheep. Yaakov made great efforts, not only to avoid actual theft, but also to avoid even the slightest suspicion of theft. This illustrates Yaakov's essence: Give Truth to Yaakov [Michah 7:20]. That one sheep (keves echad) symbolizes the attribute of Yaakov: honesty above reproach.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.torah.org/learning/ravfrand/5759/naso.html">Rabbi Yissocher Frand's <cite>Commuter Chavrusah</cite> on Parshas Naso 5759, Tape # 195, <cite>Birchas Kohanim</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <p>Honesty in business dealings is called אמונה, faith. Dishonesty is not only a sin against man, it is a sin against G-d, saying "I don't trust Your judgement about what I deserve". The Gemara says that the first question one is asked in עולם הבא is about honesty in business:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבא בשעה שמכניסין אדם לדין אומרים לו נשאת ונתת באמונה קבעת עתים לתורה עסקת בפו״ר צפית לישועה פלפלת בחכמה הבנת דבר מתוך דבר</p> <footer class=source>שבת לא,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואמר רבא לא חרבה ירושלים אלא בשביל שפסקו ממנה אנשי אמנה שנאמר (ירמיהו ה) שוטטו בחוצות ירושלים וראו נא [ודעו ובקשו ברחובותיה אם תמצאו איש] (אם יש איש) עושה משפט מבקש אמונה ואסלח לה׃ איני והאמר רב קטינא אפי׳ בשעת כשלונה של ירושלים לא פסקו ממנה אנשי אמנה...לא קשיא כאן בדברי תורה כאן במשא ומתן:</p> <footer class=source>שבת קיט, א-ב</footer></blockquote> <p>If Yaakov is so honest, what's with the sticks? One approach is to call the whole thing an incomprehensible miracle:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>תא חזי: יעקב שלים, כל מה דעבד, בחכמתא עביד, כתיב ויצג את המקלות אשר פצל ברהטים בשקתות המים, כלא בחכמתא, לאמשכא ברכאן ממבועא דכלא, דכלהו דרגין עלאין, דאינון חולקיה ועדביה.</p> <footer class=source>זוהר ויצא קסא,א</footer></blockquote> <p>The Zohar then goes on to describe the kabbalistic implications of Jacob's branches in terms of the sephirot and mystical implications. But I won't take that approach, for two reasons: first, I don't understand it. Second, it belies the idea of Jacob's honesty in his dealings with Lavan, if he is using tricks that Lavan couldn't know about. Even if practical kabbalah is not forbidden magic, it clearly goes against the spirit of their agreement.</p> <p>The simplest explanation, the one that most commentators assume, is that the peeled white stripes somehow made the sheep give birth to white-speckled lambs.</p> <p>Rashi translates (based on <a href="http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/8225#showrashi=true">Chabad's translation</a> of his Old French) לבנה ולוז וערמון as poplar, hazelnut and chestnut, and says:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>פצלות</em>.קלופים קלופים, שהיה עושהו מנומר</p> <p><em>מחשף הלבן</em> גלוי לובן של מקל. כשהיה קולפו היה נראה ונגלה לובן שלו במקום הקילוף</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ל:לז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>הבהמה רואה את המקלות והיא נרתעת לאחוריה, והזכר רובעה ויולדת כיוצא בו...</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ל:לח, ד״ה ויחמנה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote><p>He placed streaked rods over against the ewes. The sight of these rods would affect the colouring of the young about to be born.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0900689218/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0900689218&linkCode=as2&tag=bililitecom-20">Rabbi J. H. Hertz</a> on בראשית ל:לז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> מעשה בכושי אחד שנשא לכושית אחת והוליד ממנה בן לבן. תפס האב לבן ובא לו אצל רבי. א״ל שמא אינו בני! א״ל היה לך מראות בתוך ביתך? א״ל הן. א״ל שחורה או לבנה? א״ל לבנה. א״ל מיכן שהיה לך בן לבן.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה, ויצא עג:י</footer></blockquote> <p>Dr. William Etkin, who was a professor of anatomy at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine and a friend of my grandfather, wrote an article in Tradition (Fall 1965) about the question of "Jacob's Cattle and Modern Genetics". The idea of the maternal environment affecting the genotype and hence the phenotype of the offspring is inconsistent with what we know about how genes work (there is a concept of epigentic inheritance but just the sight of striped rods couldn't affect the offspring). Etkin proposes that Jacob (with his years of sheep-breeding experience) knew the rods wouldn't affect anything. He was relying on G-d's providence to allow him to earn a living:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ד</b> וישלח יעקב ויקרא לרחל וללאה השדה אל צאנו׃ <b>ה</b> ויאמר להן ראה אנכי את פני אביכן כי איננו אלי כתמל שלשם; ואלקי אבי היה עמדי׃ <b>ו</b> ואתנה ידעתן: כי בכל כחי עבדתי את אביכן׃ <b>ז</b> ואביכן התל בי והחלף את משכרתי עשרת מנים; ולא נתנו אלקים להרע עמדי׃ <b>ח</b> אם כה יאמר נקדים יהיה שכרך וילדו כל הצאן נקדים; ואם כה יאמר עקדים יהיה שכרך וילדו כל הצאן עקדים׃ <b>ט</b> ויצל אלקים את מקנה אביכם ויתן לי׃ <b>י</b> ויהי בעת יחם הצאן ואשא עיני וארא בחלום; והנה העתדים העלים על הצאן עקדים נקדים וברדים׃ <b>יא</b> ויאמר אלי מלאך האלקים בחלום יעקב; ואמר הנני׃ <b>יב</b> ויאמר שא נא עיניך וראה כל העתדים העלים על הצאן עקדים נקדים וברדים: כי ראיתי את כל אשר לבן עשה לך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אף על פי שהבדילם לבן כולם שלא יתעברו הצאן דוגמתן, היו המלאכים מביאין אותן מעדר המסור ביד בני לבן לעדר שביד יעקב</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם פטוק י, ד״ה והנה העתודים</footer></blockquote> <p>Note that in the description of the sheep-breeding, there is no mention of the sticks. It's straight genetics: speckled males crossed with solid females have speckled offspring.</p> <p>The rods were there to keep Lavan from accusing him of stealing. Jacob would put the rods in the water and the sheep would breed and multiply naturally, and some of the all-black sheep would have speckled children. If "speckling" is a recessive gene, then about a quarter of the offspring would express it. If Lavan didn't have Jacob's knowledge of sheep genetics and wanted to draw conclusions about the rods, then he was free to do so.</p> <p>This is, I think, the idea behind the Gemara's description of Jacob's duplicity: he is honest but would allow others, who see only dishonesty, to fool themselves:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>(בראשית כט:יב) ויגד יעקב לרחל כי אחי אביה הוא וכי אחי אביה הוא והלא בן אחות אביה הוא אלא אמר לה מינסבא לי אמרה ליה אין מיהו אבא רמאה הוא ולא יכלת ליה אמר לה אחיו אנא ברמאות אמרה ליה ומי שרי לצדיקי לסגויי ברמיותא אמר לה אין (שמואל ב כב:כז) עם נבר תתבר ועם עקש תתפל</p> <footer class=source>מגילה יג,ב</footer></blockquote> <p>But I still think that's too devious for a paragon of honesty. I agree that the placement of the rods had to be in the open, and I don't think it reflects badly on Jacob to assume he really thought the sight of the rods would affect the children. He was being honest and ה׳ helped him succeed. Nonetheless, I would propose there was a mechanism for the rods to actually work that is consistent with our understanding of physiology.</p> <p>The actual description of what Jacob did doesn't say anything about the sheep <em>seeing</em> the rods; they were just put in the water. It also doesn't say anything about the rods causing the offspring to be speckled. It says ויחמנה בבאן לשתות. What does ויחמנה mean?</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>נתחברו פה ל׳ זכרים ונקבות</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, ל:לח, ד״ה ויחמנה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>...ר׳ הושעיא אומר המים נעשין זרע במעיהן ולא היו צריכות לזכר, וזהו <em>ויחמנה</em> וגו׳</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> אמר ר׳ הושעיה נעשו המים זרע בתוך מעיהם ולא היו חסירות אלא צורת הולד בלבד.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה, ויצא עג:י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote><p><b>37</b> Yaakov took himself fresh sticks of poplar, hazel and chestnut (wood) and he peeled white streaks on them by uncovering the white that was (inside) the sticks. <b>38</b> He inserted the sticks that he had peeled into the (ground, by the) pools (into which) the watering troughs (would fill) where the flocks would come to drink, so that they faced the animals. (This caused them) to become stimulated (and mate) when they came to drink. <b>39</b> The flocks became stimulated (and mated on seeing) the rods, and the flocks bore ringed, patched and striped (young)...<b>41</b> What happened was, that whenever the early-bearing flocks would become stimulated (ready to mate), Yaakov would place the sticks in the troughs, before the eyes of the animals, (in order) to stimulate them (into mating) by (means of) the rods.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Chaim Miller's translation based on Rashi and the Lubavitcher Rebbe's interpretation of Rashi (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1934152013/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1934152013&linkCode=as2&tag=bililitecom-20">Gutnick Chumash</a>, 2006)</footer></blockquote> <p>I would read this story as Jacob, as an experienced sheep-breeder, using an herbal fertility drug on the sheep. I don't know what poplar, chestnut and hazel in the drinking water would do to sheep, but it's not unreasonable that they could affect the <em>ewes</em>. It's the suggestion that it affects the genetic makeup of the offspring that's incompatible with how we understand genetics. The sheep would give birth to lambs, some of which could be speckled, and he could breed those with the stronger, "early-breeding" sheep to increase the value of his flocks.</p> <p>It's all above-board, completely honest and reasonable, and serves as an object lesson in the balance of <i lang=he>hishtadlut</i> and <i lang=he>bitachon</i>. Jacob does what is necessary to earn a living, all with the best science available to him (as we discussed in the past, whether or not the rods actually work is irrelevant; it's the attitude that matters). He stays honest, never stealing or even doing anything suspicious, trusting that ה׳ will reward him appropriately. And ה׳ does; the sheep are miraculously manipulated to make him fabulously wealthy.</p>
